Nutrition provides the resources necessary to carry out all the physiological functions organisms require. This has important implications for insect pest management, as polyphagous species can experience considerable nutritional variability, which may impact their response to management tactics.Many studies have shown that dietary protein and carbohydrates play a primary role in insect fitness and that insects regulate their intake of these macronutrients to reach an optimal balance or intake target. Importantly, this intake target can vary across developmental stages, gender, and environmental conditions as physiological requirements change.In this study, we determined the intake target for adult spotted‐wing Drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, an invasive polyphagous fruit pest. We found that adult D. suzukii regulate their intake to meet a 1:4–1:5 protein‐to‐carbohydrate ratio, which is slightly more carbohydrate‐biased than the larval intake target. We also examined the effect of nutritional state on susceptibility to three commonly‐used insecticides by rearing flies on diets with different field‐relevant protein‐to‐carbohydrate ratios and exposing adults to an LC50 dose of zeta‐cypermethrin, spinetoram, or pyrethrin.Overall, female flies had higher survivorship than males, and diet effects varied across insecticides. Diet had no impact in the spinetoram treatments, while the extreme carbohydrate‐ and protein‐biased diets produced the lowest survivorship and reproductive performance in the zeta‐cypermethrin treatments. Survivorship increased with dietary protein in the pyrethrin treatments but reproductive performance did not differ across diets. Our results suggest that tactics, which reduce fly access to dietary protein sources, such as sterilisation, could increase fly susceptibility to insecticides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

1. Although polyphagy is widespread among Drosophila, some specialist species have evolved in response to resource competition and other selection factors favouring niche separation. The small fruit specialist Drosophila suzukii Matsumura has evolved a unique serrated ovipositor that allows it to access ripening fruit, a niche unavailable to most Drosophila. However, it is unclear whether ancestral traits (the use of non‐fruit resources) are maintained in this specialist species. 2. In this study, maternal preferences and offspring fitness in response to novel apple, mushroom, and bird manure‐based diets were investigated by comparing oviposition and offspring survival and development on various diets. The effect of those diets on survival at cool temperatures and the effect of natal environment/previous exposure on adult preferences were evaluated. 3. Female D. suzukii accepted non‐fruit diets such as mushroom and bird manure, and offspring completed their larval development on all diets tested. However, D. suzukii did not perform well on diets that included bird manure. By contrast, combinational apple/mushroom diets were associated with greater oviposition, lower mortality, faster development, and larger offspring than other diets. These diets were also associated with increased resistance to cold stress, and preference for these diets was positively affected by previous feeding experience. 4. These data suggest that D. suzukii may use non‐fruit resources when preferred resources are scarce. Given that this pest is adapted to temperate climates, alternative resources might provide seasonal nutritional support when fruit resources are not temporally available, although field data are needed to support this hypothesis. 1. One possible explanation for the latitudinal gradient in species richness often demonstrated is a related gradient in niche breadth, which may allow for denser species packing in the more stable environments at low latitudes. 2. The evidence for such a gradient is, however, ambiguous, and the results have varied as much as the methods. Several studies have considered the non-independence of species, but few have performed explicit phylogenetic analyses. 3. In the present study, we tested for a correlation between diet breadth and latitude of distribution in Nymphalinae butterflies using generalised estimating equations (GEE) and accounting for phylogenetic independence. 4. Using a simple model with only latitude of distribution as a predictor variable revealed a significant positive relationship with diet breadth. Previous studies, however, have shown that diet breadth is also correlated with butterfly range size, and in turn, that range size may be correlated with latitude of distribution. Including geographical range size in the model also turned out to have a profound effect on the results - to the extent that the relationship between latitude of distribution and diet breadth was effectively reversed. 5. We conclude that, at least for this group of butterflies, there is no evidence for a positive correlation between latitude of species distribution and diet breadth when controlling for range size, and that the effect may actually even be reversed. 1. Manipulative field studies were carried out to evaluate the foliage age preference–performance relationship for an extreme generalist herbivore, the whitemarked tussock moth ( Orygia leucostigma Smith) (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), within balsam fir [ Abies balsamea (L.) Mill]. 2. Field surveys indicated that early instar caterpillars fed almost exclusively on young (i.e. current-year) foliage, whereas late instars caterpillars fed on both young and mature (i.e. 1- and 2-year-old) foliage. 3. Survival of early instar caterpillars was highest in treatments where current-year and/or 1-year old foliage were available, but decreased significantly on older foliage. In contrast, late instar caterpillars had the highest survival when allowed to feed on all age classes of foliage, whereas potential fecundity was highest for late instars that fed on young foliage. 4. Overall, caterpillars had 32–65% higher fitness when able to feed on all rather than just one age class of foliage. 5. These results support both the ‘complementary diet' hypothesis, which states that dietary mixing of different-aged foliage can increase nutrient uptake and/or dilute harmful secondary plant chemicals, and the ‘ontogeny’ hypothesis, which attributes changes in diet to changes in the nutritional needs and/or tolerance to plant defences of juvenile insects as they develop. 1. We evaluated the relation between plant-mediated larval traits and the fitness of female bagworms, Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis Haworth (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) by sampling 29 populations of bagworms on five plant genera ( Thuja, Pinus, Picea, Juniperus, and Gleditsia). 2. Compared with those on other genera of plants, female larvae on Thuja attained a larger size at pupation and developed faster. The superior quality of Thuja as a larval food plant resulted in a higher potential fitness of females, as indicated by a low level of pupal mortality and high fecundity. 3. The fecundity of females increased with pupal size on different plant genera, and the effect of host plant genus was negligible compared with pupal size. 4. The mating success of females varied among different populations (0–37% unmated females), but neither host plant, emergence time, nor the size of females had a significant influence on the proportion of mated females. 5. The conversion of adult biomass into reproductive tissue, measured as the ratio between the biomass of eggs divided by the biomass of calling females, increased with the pupal size of females and approached 90% for large females. 1. The common blossom thrips, Frankliniella schultzei, is a polyphagous anthophilic species that colonises a wide range of host-plant species across different plant taxa. The environmental cues used by these polyphagous insects to recognise and locate host plants are not known. We therefore determined if colour is an important environmental signal used by F. schultzei to recognise flowers of eight of its more significant host-plant species. 2. The effect of flower colour on the colonisation of different host plant species by F. schultzei was investigated by collecting and analysing the following: (a) numbers of thrips from different heights and aspects of the primary host plant Malvaviscus arboreus, (b) thrips distribution within flowers of Hibiscus rosasinensis, (c) colour reflectance from flowers of eight different host-plant species, and (d) reflectance from different coloured sticky traps and the number of thrips trapped on them at different times of the day and on different dates. 3. The results indicate that: (a) the thrips (both sexes) concentrate towards the top of the primary host plant M. arboreus and are not distributed differentially according to sunny or shady aspect of the plant, (b) the number of female thrips on H. rosasinensis was higher in anthers compared to petals (corolla) and the basal parts of the flower, and males were as numerous on the petals as were females, and (c) there is a common floral reflectance pattern (but with different intensities) across the eight host plant species, mainly in the red part of the spectrum (600–700 nm). 4. Results of colour sticky trapping show that red attracts more female thrips compared to any other colour and that most were caught between 09.00 and 11.00 hours. By contrast, more male thrips were trapped between 07.00 and 09.00 hours. Males were more evenly distributed across the different colours but the highest numbers were associated with the yellow traps. 5. The higher densities of thrips at the top of their host plant may be related to the early morning (07.00–11.00 hours) activity of the thrips, when the top portions of the plant are more exposed to sunlight. The sex-related distributions of F. schultzei thrips across time, coloured sticky traps, and various parts of the flowers seem to be related to mating swarm formation by the males, on the one hand, and the relative frequency and intensity of the use of M. arboreus by the females, on the other, as a feeding and oviposition site. Frankliniella schultzei females respond more strongly to red than to any other colours, so it is predicted that the spectral properties of colour recognition by this species will correlate with the predominant red reflectance of its primary host, M. arboreus, and that there may well be a sex-related difference in colour recognition within this species. Summary 1. Intraguild predation and cannibalism are common among predaceous phytoseiid mites (Acari, Phytoseiidae) but the nutritional benefits gained by these processes are poorly understood. 2. The study reported here addressed the questions of whether cannibalism and intraguild predation provide different nutritional benefits and whether the ability to utilise cannibalism and intraguild predation is linked to the diet specialisation of phytoseiid mites. Specialists tested were Phytoseiulus macropilis, Galendromus occidentalis, and Neoseiulus longispinosus; generalists tested were Amblyseius andersoni, Neoseiulus cucumeris, and Neoseiulus fallacis. 3. All generalists and the specialist P. macropilis were able to complete juvenile development with both con- and hetero-specific prey. Juvenile development of generalists was shorter with heterospecific prey than with conspecific prey, whereas development of the specialist P. macropilis did not differ between prey types. Only a few N. longispinosus and G. occidentalis, both specialists, reached adulthood by cannibalism but none reached adulthood by intraguild predation. 4. All generalists were able to sustain oviposition by intraguild predation. Neoseiulus cucumeris and A. andersoni laid more eggs with heterospecific prey than with conspecific prey, whereas N. fallacis had similar oviposition rates with both prey types. No specialist sustained oviposition by intraguild predation or cannibalism. 5. Overall, generalists gained equal or more nutritional benefits by intraguild predation than by cannibalism and were able to utilise phytoseiid intraguild prey as an alternative food source. Specialists gained equal or more nutritional benefits from cannibalism than from intraguild predation. Summary1. Experiments with adult females of the whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, demonstrated that when mixtures of host plants were present, performance was reduced relative to that on the best of the host plants when presented alone. 2. Behavioural observations indicated that in the presence of a variety of plants, individuals moved more, switched between plants more frequently, and stayed feeding in one place for shorter periods of time, compared with the situation when single plant species were available. 3.
