The article focuses on the study that investigates the physiological and developmental effects of carbon monoxide on the growth of cottonwood in urban and rural areas in the U.S. The correlativity between final season biomass and cumulative exposures to carbon monoxide, compounded with doubled growth reductions in an open-top chamber experiment determined that cumulative exposure of carbon monoxide in rural sites reduces growth of cottonwood. The study determined that chamber plant affected with carbon monoxide had higher conductance and contracted photosynthesis of newly expanded foliage, early leaf aging and the protective reduction in stomatal conductance.
