The purpose of our study was to use recent nationally-representative data to 1) determine whether reported adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) were associated with individual disordered eating behaviors (DEBs) for the US- based early and middle adolescent population; and 2) the extent to which individual ACE categories were associated with DEBs for this population. The study used cross-sectional data from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health, which used parent-reported data. Inclusion criteria included all early (10-13 years of age) and middle-aged adolescents (14-17 years of age) (n = 24,173). Multiple logistic regressions were used to test the association between ACEs and DEBs while controlling for covariates. Both categories for ACEs (i.e. 1-2 ACEs and 3+ ACEs) exhibited a statistically significant association with three specific DEBs: skipping meals or fasting, low interest in food, and binge eating. Additionally, six of the seven ACE categories exhibited a statistically significant association with DEBs which included parent or guardian divorced, parent or guardian time in jail, adults slap, hit, kick, punch others, victim of violence, lived with mentally ill, and lived with person with alcohol/drug problem. An understudied cognitive bias within eating disorder (ED) psychopathology is Thought-Shape Fusion (TSF), which involves irrational beliefs about the likelihood and moral implications of feared outcomes related to shape, weight, and food. This phenomenon has received less attention within the context of ED treatment, with little known about potential processes of change to address TSF and ultimately promote ED recovery. We propose cognitive defusion as a process of change, a metacognitive process that emphasizes observing thoughts objectively rather than appraising thoughts as absolute truth. We explored whether cognitive defusion, that is, reductions in body image-related cognitive fusion, mediated the relationship between trait-level TSF and treatment outcomes in a transdiagnostic ED sample of adult and adolescent females (N = 130) presenting to residential care. We found that reductions in body image-related cognitive fusion mediates the association between trait-level TSF at baseline and ED severity at discharge. However, when the sample was separated into adolescent and adult subgroups, these results only remained significant for adolescents. People with attentional problems are at increased risk of eating disorders. This paper aimed to systematically review and synthesize the existing evidence on stimulant medication in the management of patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) or anorexia nervosa (AN) with or without comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. A protocol for the review was registered with Open Science Framework (OSF) Registry and critical appraisal of the literature was conducted using Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Tools. Thirteen articles met inclusion criteria including two quasi-experimental studies, one randomized controlled trial, four case series, and six case reports. 26 cases were included from studies and 32 from case series/reports. Only two cases from a single case report had a diagnosis of AN, while the remainder had BN. Stimulants included methylamphetamine, lisdexamfetamine, methylphenidate, dextroamphetamine sulphate and mixed amphetamine salt. In nearly all cases of BN there were reported reductions in eating disorder symptoms. The rates of adverse effects were high and included weight loss, decreased appetite, tachycardia, dry mouth, fatigue, insomnia, restlessness, nausea, bruxism, headache, palpitations, blood pressure changes, irritability, anxiety, depressed mood, and diaphoresis. There is currently insufficient evidence to support the use of stimulant medications to treat symptoms of BN or AN. Previous research identified four patterns of negative emotional eating in American and Chinese university students and proposed future directions (e.g., exploring potential differences in emotion regulation across patterns and replicating the patterns in a general, non-student population). Furthermore, prior research has not explored group differences in muscularity-oriented eating disorder symptomatology or psychosocial impairment. Therefore, the present study addressed these gaps in a sample of general Chinese adults, further testing group differences in typical and muscularity-oriented eating disorder symptomatology, psychosocial impairment, and emotion regulation difficulties across patterns of negative emotional eating. A total of 600 Chinese adults were recruited. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used. Results replicated the four patterns of negative emotional eating in previous research, including non-emotional eating (non-EE), emotional over- and under-eating (EOE-EUE), emotional over-eating (EOE), and emotional under-eating (EUE). Significant class differences were identified in eating disorder symptomatology, psychosocial impairment, and emotion regulation difficulties. Specifically, individuals with EOE and EOE-EUE patterns exhibited higher eating disorder symptomatology, higher psychosocial impairment, and more emotion regulation difficulties than those with non-EE and EUE patterns. Therefore, these two classes (i.e., EOE and EOE-EUE), especially the poorly researched EOE-EUE group, should be further examined to elucidate research and clinical applications. To examine rates and predictors of attrition from referral through to treatment completion in an outpatient public psychology service's eating disorder program in Perth, Western Australia. The proportion (number) of clients (N = 671; mean age = 23.8 years) transitioning between stages of pre-treatment and treatment was identified. Associations between demographic, treatment and clinical variables and attrition were investigated using logistic regression. Only 34% (n = 230) of referred patients started treatment and 16% (n = 107) completed treatment. Referral acceptance was correlated with provisional diagnoses that meet the service's inclusion criteria, and attendance at an initial assessment was correlated with younger age. Treatment commencement was correlated with the presence of a co-occurring depressive or anxiety disorder, and no previous suicide attempts. Completing a full course of treatment was correlated with no previous hospitalisation for psychiatric issues, no previous suicide attempts, a history of psychiatric medication use, and treatment with family-based therapy. High rates of attrition were found from referral to treatment completion. A suggested framework for defining the different stages of attrition is proposed to allow for consistency of attrition reporting across the mental health field. Dancers are at heightened risk for eating disorders (EDs) and have job and training demands that obscure ED assessment and likely impede treatment. Two behavioral manifestations of ED psychopathology that may present uniquely in a dance environment are body checking and body avoidance. The current study sought to provide a foundational understanding of the phenomenology of body checking and avoidance among dancers by assessing the reliability (i.e., internal consistency) of existing body checking and avoidance measures and the relationships, or convergent validity, between measures of body checking and avoidance and measures of related constructs. Eighty professional and pre-professional (i.e., conservatory level) dancers (78.8 % female) from seven dance genres completed self-report measures of body checking and avoidance, ED pathology, clinical perfectionism, depression, and anxiety. Across the dancer sample, body checking and avoidance measures demonstrated adequate internal consistency. More frequent body checking and body avoidance was strongly related to higher levels of ED pathology. There were moderate to strong correlations between body checking and body avoidance and clinical perfectionism, depression, and anxiety such that higher body checking and body avoidance was related to higher clinical perfectionism, depression, and anxiety. Exploratory analyses found no significant differences between ballet dancers and dancers of other dance genres; professional dancers scored in the normative range on measures of body checking and body avoidance. Dancers' qualitative descriptions of body checking and avoidance revealed behaviors not included in existing questionnaires, such as unique mirror use behaviors, technology-assisted body checking, and the checking and avoidance of body parts relevant to the dance-specific body ideal. This study aimed to describe the frequency of dieting practices among adolescents and young adults in Canada, as well as determine the association between dieting and eating disorder attitudes and behaviors. Data from 2762 Canadian adolescents and young adults from the Canadian Study of Adolescent Health Behaviors were analyzed. Frequencies were used to determine the prevalence of 11 different diets among the sample, and chi-square tests were used to assess gender differences. Multiple modified Poisson and linear regression analyses were conducted to determine the associations between any dieting and eating disorder attitudes and behaviors. Among the sample, 15.7 % of girls and women, 10.4 % of boys and men, and 13.0 % of transgender/gender expansive (TGE) participants reported any dieting in the past 12 months, with the Ketogenic diet being most common among all genders. Results from regression analyses showed that engaging in any dieting in the past 12 months was associated with greater eating disorder psychopathology among girls, women, boys, and men, but not TGE participants. There were varying trends in association between specific types of dieting practices and eating disorder behaviors among girls, women, boys, and men. Dieting is relatively common among a national sample of Canadian adolescents and young adults, and engagement is associated with greater eating disorder psychopathology and behaviors. The promotion of harmful dieting-related products, including weight-loss, muscle-building, and cleanse/detox supplements, is pervasive across TikTok. Use of these products has been associated with eating pathology, and in some instances, increased risk of an eating disorder diagnosis. To inform eating disorders prevention and public health intervention, a content analysis was conducted to analyze the promotional features of the most viewed videos as of June 2022 in the U.S. across popular dieting product-related hashtags (#dietpills, #preworkout, #detox) (N = 233 videos). Investigators watched and coded videos using a codebook that captured details about featured individuals, product claims and details, and other video elements (e.g., language, use of popular music). Descriptive statistics were obtained to analyze trends within and across product hashtags. A total of 78 #dietpills, 86 #preworkout, and 69 #detox videos met study criteria. Videos promoting weight-loss and cleanse/detox products overwhelmingly featured feminine-presenting (70.5 % and 71 %, respectively) and thin (35.9 % and 44.9 %) individuals, while #preworkout video subjects were mostly masculine-presenting (73.3 %) and muscular (61.6 %). Most did not disclose their credentials (93.6 %) nor identify whether the promotion of the product was sponsored by the retailer (95.7 %). The vast majority of videos (97 %) did not provide any scientific evidence to support health- and appearance-related claims. Eating disorder (ED) behaviors and depression are associated with numerous negative outcomes, including lower quality of life and functional impairment. College women are at elevated risk for both. Prior research indicates ED behaviors, including binge eating, self-induced vomiting, and fasting, predict increases in future depressive symptoms. However, symptom heterogeneity in EDs is common, and all disordered eating, or its associated distress, cannot be captured by the endorsement of behaviors. Impairment that results from ED behaviors may be a comparable, or stronger, predictor of depressive symptoms. We sought to characterize the longitudinal relationship between ED-related functional impairment, ED behaviors, and depressive symptoms. College-aged women [ N = 304; 72 % white, mean (SD) age = 18.45 (0.88)] completed an online survey in August (baseline), and then three months later in November (follow-up). Baseline ED-related functional impairment, but not baseline ED behaviors, significantly predicted depressive symptoms at follow-up, controlling for baseline depressive symptoms, negative affect, and body mass index. Findings indicate ED-related functional impairment is a risk factor for increases in depressive symptoms across one semester of college, irrespective of ED behavior engagement, weight status, and dispositional negative affect. This longitudinal study examined whether body image concerns (general; sporting) predicted eating disorder psychopathology, and whether the link differed according to nature of sport engagement. Participants were competitive sports engagers, non-competitive sports engagers, or sports non-engagers. At baseline, 510 adults completed online measures of sports demographics, eating psychopathology and body image. Eating psychopathology and body image measures were taken at follow-up (6 months later). Competitive sports engagers had better body image than the other two groups. Poorer body appreciation and better appearance-related body image predicted higher eating disorder psychopathology. Engaging in sports competitively may be beneficial for body image. Food and alcohol disturbance (FAD) is an understudied form of disordered eating, in which the consumption of calories is restricted in preparation for drinking alcohol. Guided by previous literature, the present study examined the direct, indirect, and interactive relationships between social media use, anxiety, social support, FAD, and disordered eating among young adults. Recruited from a large southwestern public university, the sample included 679 undergraduate students who completed an online survey in spring of 2022 and who indicated that they consume alcohol and are 18 to 29 years old. Two moderated mediation analyses assessed the indirect effects of anxiety on the relationships between social media use with FAD and disordered eating, and the conditional contribution of social support. Results indicated that social media use was related to disordered eating both directly and indirectly through anxiety, but it was only related to FAD through anxiety. Furthermore, indirect effects connecting social media use to FAD and disordered eating were conditional upon social support. Our findings suggest FAD and disordered eating may be coping mechanisms for anxiety stemming from social media exposure, though these associations appear to be attenuated when social support is high. Over 40 % of United States Veterans Health Administration (VHA) primary care patients have obesity. Few patients use VHA's flagship weight management program, MOVE! and there is little information on other behavioral weight management program use. The national United States cohort included over 1.5 million primary care patients with obesity, age 18–79, based on VHA administrative data. Gender stratified multivariable logistic regression identified correlates of weight management use in the year after a patient's first primary care appointment (alpha of 0.05). Weight management use was defined as MOVE! or nutrition clinic visits. The cohort included 121,235 women and 1,521,547 men with 13 % and 7 % using weight management, respectively. Point estimates for specific correlates of use were similar between women and men, and across programs. Black patients were more likely to use weight management than White patients. Several physical and mental health diagnoses were also associated with increased use, such as sleep apnea and eating disorders. Age and distance from VHA were negatively associated with weight management use. When assessing multiple types of weight management visits, weight management care in VHA appears to be used more often by some populations at higher risk for obesity. Other groups may need additional outreach, such as those living far from VHA. Future work should focus on outreach and prevention efforts to increase overall use rates. The Hierarchical Taxonomy of Internalizing Dimensions for Eating Disorders model positions eating disorder (ED) symptoms on an internalizing dimension alongside anxiety and mood symptoms. Symptom dimensions falling under the internalizing subfactors of distress (e.g., social anxiety) and fear/avoidance (e.g., panic, compulsions, checking) may differentially guide treatment. We examined relations between fear of negative evaluation and intolerance of uncertainty (core features of social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, respectively) and ED-related impairment and potential diagnostic differences. We hypothesized that: (a) fear of negative evaluation and intolerance of uncertainty would be related to ED-related impairment, (b) the relation between fear of negative evaluation and impairment would be strongest among individuals with "binge-eating syndromes" (i.e., bulimia nervosa [BN], binge-eating disorder [BED]), and (c) the relation between intolerance of uncertainty and impairment would be strongest among individuals with "weight-phobic syndromes" (i.e., anorexia nervosa [AN], BN, atypical AN). Participants (N = 236) included children/adolescents and adults evaluated for outpatient ED treatment. Participants completed questionnaires and semi-structured diagnostic interviews. Greater fear of negative evaluation and greater intolerance of uncertainty were related to greater clinical impairment, and the strength of these relations depended on ED diagnosis. Fear of negative evaluation was related to impairment among individuals with AN and atypical AN, and intolerance of uncertainty was related to impairment for individuals with AN, BN, and atypical AN. Arab, Middle Eastern, and North African (A-MENA) American women are often subject to intersectional discrimination, and they have also not been traditionally recognized as a distinct racial group in disordered eating literature. No study to date has provided descriptive information on disordered and emotional eating A-MENA American women, nor has examined perceptions of widely used measurements of eating pathology in this population. The current study generated descriptive information among A-MENA women on two widely used measures of eating pathology, the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) and the Emotional Eating Scale (EES). Participants (N = 244) were A-MENA adult women were recruited via social media and snowball sampling. Qualitative findings provide potential sociocultural predictors of disordered eating that should be further explored, such as bicultural identity and family pressures/comments toward appearance. Secondly, themes from the EES-R indicate adding emotion of shame and considering identity-related stress. To examine the prevalence of eating disorder symptoms (EDS) in 16 years and older individuals with insulin-dependent diabetes including both clinical and subclinical eating disorder symptoms. We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases to discover studies reporting prevalence of eating disorder symptoms in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes (both type 1 and type 2). We performed a meta-analysis to estimate the pooled prevalence of eating disorder symptoms and an independent meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of insulin omission. A total of 45 studies were included in the meta-analysis of eating disorder symptoms. Diabetes Eating Problem Survey (DEPS-R) was the most frequently used screening tool (in 43 % of studies, n = 20). The pooled prevalence of eating disorder symptoms was 24 % (95 % CI 0.21–0.28), whereas in studies using DEPS-R, it was slightly higher, 27 % (95 % CI 0.24–0.31), with the prevalence ratio (PR) of 1.1. The prevalence differed between screening tools (χ2 = 85.83, df = 8, p <.0001). The sex distribution was associated with the observed prevalences; in studies with a higher female prevalence (>58 %), the pooled eating disorder symptom prevalence was higher [30 % (95 % CI 0.26–0.34) vs. 18 % (95 % Cl 0.14–0.22), PR 1.7]. The prevalence of insulin omission was 21 % (95 % CI 0.13–0.33). Eating disorder symptoms and insulin omission are common in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes regardless of age. Recent evidence has highlighted that a moderate degree of disordered eating has become the norm among the general population. While previous research has demonstrated that individuals with eating disorders exhibit heightened weak central coherence (i.e., attention to detail) and cognitive rigidity, and this plays a key role in the development and maintenance of the disorders, less is known about the relationship between disordered eating and these cognitive styles in subclinical community samples. A community sample of females completed self-report measures of weak central coherence, cognitive rigidity and eating disorder pathology. Unlike previous studies in the area, we first excluded participants with a diagnosis of eating disorder and then confined the analyses to those without clinically significant disordered eating. In line with the clinical literature, we found both cognitive rigidity and weak central coherence to correlate with severity and frequency of disordered eating behaviours and cognitions, suggesting the relationship also exists in subclinical samples. Weight suppression (WS) defines the difference between the highest weight in adulthood and the current weight. WS at lowest weight is the difference between the highest and the lowest ever weight. Weight rebound is the difference between the past lowest weight and current weight. The distinction in the capacities of WS, weight rebound, and WS at the lowest weight remains unclear regarding their efficacy in forecasting clinical endpoints. This study assessed the relationship between WS, WS at lowest weight and/or weight rebound and eating disorder (ED) clinical severity. In this retrospective cohort study, adult participants were selected at the Outpatient Unit for multidisciplinary assessment of ED, Montpellier, France, between February 2012 and October 2014 and May 2017 and January 2020. ED clinical severity was evaluated using the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q). The sample included 303 patients: 204 with anorexia nervosa (AN) and 99 with bulimia nervosa (BN). The EDE-Q total score was positively correlated with WS at lowest weight in patients with AN (Spearman's rho = 0.181, p = 0.015) and with BN (Spearman's rho = 0.377; p < 0.001). It was also positively correlated with weight rebound (Spearman's rho = 0.319; p = 0.003) in patients with BN. In the multivariate analysis, EDE-Q total score was associated with WS at lowest weight only in patients with BN (β = 0.265; p = 0.03). WS at lowest weight seems to be a good measure of ED clinical severity. More research is needed for better understanding WS at lowest weight in assessment and treatment of patients with ED. • Higher WS at the lowest weight scores were correlated with increased severity of eating disorders. • WS at lowest weight proved to be easier to determine and a better indicator of ED's clinical severity than the classic WS. • WS at the lowest weight was associated with the clinical severity of BN than BN. • WS at lowest weight merits considering in classifying and managing ED' patients. Self-report studies suggest that patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) evidence difficulties with interoceptive awareness. Indeed, interoceptive deficits may persist after recovery of BN and may be a biological trait that predisposes symptom development in BN. However, no studies to date have directly assessed interoceptive sensitivity, or accuracy in detecting and perceiving internal body cues, in patients with or recovered from BN. Nine women who had recovered from BN and 10 healthy control women completed the Heart Beat Perception Task (HBPT) in which individuals were required to estimate the number of heartbeats between intervals of time. Accuracy scores were compared between groups. Significant differences were found between the groups on the HBPT ((F1,19) = 7.78, p = .013, Cohen's d = 1.16) when controlling for age. These results suggest that deficits in interoceptive sensitivity are present in individuals recovered from BN. Thus interoceptive deficits may be one factor that bridges the gap between brain dysfunction and symptom presentation in BN.

Viewing fitspiration (fitness inspiration) has been found to increase body dissatisfaction and negative affect; however, minimal research has examined how body dissatisfaction and related variables differ based on intentionality of fitspiration exposure. This study's aim was to examine differences in levels of weight/shape concerns, disordered eating, and self-compassion according to type of fitspiration exposure. Participants included 234 female undergraduate students who completed online questionnaires. We created three groups of fitspiration exposure based on their self-report of Instagram exposure: unexposed (neither view nor post fitspiration; n = 43), incidentally exposed (report seeing fitspiration content unintentionally; n = 119), and intentionally exposed (intentionally view and/or post fitspiration; n = 72). Weight/shape concerns, disordered eating, and self-compassion were significantly worse in the intentionally exposed group and incidentally exposed group compared to the unexposed group. Recent research suggests high rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and eating disorder (ED) comorbidity in women veterans. This study aims to expand the literature by examining associations between PTSD and ED diagnoses and symptoms in this population. We assessed probable PTSD diagnosis and symptom clusters (intrusion, avoidance, arousal and reactivity, and negative alterations in cognition and mood [NACM]), as well as probable Binge Eating Disorder (BED) diagnosis and ED subscales (dietary restraint, shape/weight overvaluation, and body dissatisfaction) in a sample of women veterans (N = 371). We investigated significance at the standard p <.05, and the Bonferroni-corrected p <.005 cut-off to adjust for experiment-wise error. Overall, we found that probable PTSD was associated with provisional BED (p <.001) using logistic regression at both cut-offs. Probable PTSD was associated with all ED subscales (all p's < 0.003) using linear regression models also at both cut-offs. Provisional BED was associated with NACM at p <.05 (p =.046), though it did not meet significance at our conservative cut-off. NACM was also associated with shape/weight overvaluation (p =.02) and a global ED score (p =.01) at p <.05, but not at our conservative cut-off; arousal was associated with shape/weight overvaluation (p =.04) and the global ED score (p =.02) at p <.05, but not at our conservative cut-off. Parents' negative body talk about children (negative weight/shape comments) and internalized weight bias (application of negative weight-based stereotypes to oneself) are associated with children's maladaptive eating behaviors, but mechanisms are poorly understood. Conceptually, parental behaviors and attitudes may translate to implicit and explicit concerns about their child's weight and influence parents' feeding practices. These associations are underexplored in the literature. 242 parents (59.4% mothers) completed a one-time assessment that included measures of internalized weight bias, negative body talk, and feeding practices. Parents also completed assessments about one of their children, of any weight status (age range 5–15 years; 40% daughters). Parents' internalized weight bias was positively associated with concern about their child's weight and restriction of their child's diet. Parents' negative body talk towards their child was positively associated with concern about their child's weight and shape, restriction of their child's diet, and monitoring of their child's diet. Relative to internalized weight-bias, negative body talk had a stronger correlation with parents' concern about child weight and monitoring of child's diet. Correlations did not vary by child gender or weight category. Parents' internalized weight bias and negative body talk about their child were associated with their feeding practices across child gender and weight categories, with correlations in the small to medium range. Thus, children of all genders and weights may be vulnerable to enacted weight bias. Disordered eating and body image concerns are particularly prevalent among women who are engaged to be married (i.e., brides-to-be), and this population may be subject to increased social and cultural pressure to achieve specific appearance ideals. The tripartite influence model purports that appearance pressures from four sources (peers, family, romantic partners, and media) influence body image and disordered eating outcomes through thin ideal internalization and appearance comparison. The present cross-sectional study sought to examine the relationships between tripartite theory constructs, body image, and disordered eating among 329 brides-to-be using path analysis with robust estimation. In the final model, media influence was the only tripartite predictor associated with both thin ideal internalization and appearance comparison. Further, thin ideal internalization and appearance comparison were associated with disordered eating directly as well as indirectly through body dissatisfaction. Altogether, the influence variables explained 39 % of the variance in disordered eating. While appearance pressures from media, peers, and partners were indirectly associated with disordered eating through one or more hypothesized indirect pathways, appearance pressure from family was not, indicating this relationship may be uniquely impacted by other factors not captured in tripartite models. Cognitive and behavioral inflexibility are transdiagnostic maintaining mechanisms of varied psychopathologies, including eating disorders (ED). The Eating Disorder Flexibility Index (EDFLIX) is the only psychometrically validated self-report measure of general and ED-specific flexibility in the published literature. The EDFLIX was originally developed in Scandinavian adult clinical and healthy control samples but is increasingly used in its English version in other populations, including adolescent and nonclinical samples, raising questions about its validity and reliability in diverse groups. This study examined the factor structure of the previously published English EDFLIX in undergraduates (n = 578, 57.6 % female, 50.2 % White). Parallel and exploratory factor analysis suggested the EDFLIX may comprise two or three underlying factors. However, follow-up confirmatory factor analyses from nonclinical student and clinical ED-diagnosed (n = 69, 87.0 % female, 91.3 % White) samples did not support either model. Further, EDFLIX scores did not correlate with established neuropsychological measures of cognitive flexibility typically used in prior research on flexibility in EDs. Findings suggest the EDFLIX has poor psychometric properties in certain groups and may not capture underlying aspects of flexibility as previously proposed. The aim of our study was to validate the Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale (EDDS-5) updated for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) with a diverse veteran population against a clinician-administered interview based on the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 (SCID-5). Our sample included 343 veterans, 18–75 years, recruited April 2019 to December 2022 who completed the EDDS-5 as well as other eating disorder and mental health measures. A subsample of these veterans received clinical interviews (n = 166), which were used to validate the EDDS-5. We found that despite multiple proposed modifications, the EDDS-5 performed poorly at correctly identifying diverse veterans who were diagnosed as having eating disorders through clinician-administered interviews. The sensitivity was very low, indicating that using the EDDS-5 did not identify many true positives and may also over diagnose those without true eating disorders. The use of weight-inclusive programming within a workplace wellness context remains understudied. The present study is a pilot/feasibility study of a 3-month, virtual, weight-inclusive, intuitive eating-based workplace wellness program. Program participants (n = 114), who were all employees at a large public university in the Midwest, received weekly emails with a link to an instructional video related to intuitive eating and were encouraged to meet virtually with their health coach. Participants provided self-report data on behavioral and psychological outcomes including intuitive eating, internalized weight stigma, eating disorder symptoms, and diet quality at baseline, post-intervention (3 months from baseline), and follow-up (6 months from baseline). Changes in behavioral and psychological outcomes from baseline to post-intervention and follow-up were examined using paired t -tests, with Cohen's d effect sizes reported. Generalized linear models were used to examine whether participant characteristics and program engagement were associated with program outcomes. Increases in intuitive eating and decreases in internalized weight stigma and eating disorder symptoms were seen from baseline to post-intervention (Cohen's d = 1.02, −0.47, and −0.63, respectively) and follow-up (Cohen's d = 0.86, −0.31, and −0.60). No changes in dietary quality were seen at post-intervention, but a significant reduction in intake of added sugars, fast food, and sugar sweetened beverages were observed at follow-up (Cohen's d = −0.35, −0.23, −0.25). Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) provides a neurobiological personality framework for understanding approach and avoidance behavioural patterns. Recent research suggests an association between RST personality traits (reward interest and behavioural inhibition system [BIS]) and women's body image and eating behaviours. The current study aimed to extend this research by testing for indirect relationships between reward interest and BIS and eating disorder symptoms, as mediated through thin ideal internalisation. Adult female participants (N = 354, M = 22.06 years of age, SD = 6.78) completed self-report measures of reward interest, BIS, thin ideal internalisation, and eating disorder symptoms (i.e., restraint, eating concerns, weight and shape concerns). Indirect relationships were tested using bootstrapped mediation analyses. Results showed thin ideal internalisation mediated the pathways between the BIS and restraint, eating concern, and weight and shape concerns. Reward interest was not associated with thin ideal internalisation, or with eating disorder symptoms. Although the application of RST to women's body image is an emerging research area, these novel findings suggest BIS trait sensitivity may increase women's risk of body image concerns and restricted eating, via increased levels of thin ideal internalisation. Overall, these findings provide preliminary support for inclusion of individual differences in BIS sensitivity in risk factor models of body image and eating disturbances. Compulsive exercise is a transdiagnostic feature of eating disorders which adversely affects aspects of recovery, such as length of hospitalisation, risk of a chronic outcome, and risk of relapse. CompuLsive Exercise Activity TheraPy (LEAP) aims to reduce compulsive exercise through a cognitive behavioural approach. This study aims to investigate the effect of LEAP on compulsive exercise behaviour using subscales of the Compulsive Exercise Test (CET), a measure of exercise in individuals with eating disorders. Predictive validity of the CET's subscales and its ability to predict eating psychopathology are investigated. This study used data from a randomized controlled trial of LEAP (1). Linear mixed modelling was used to investigate the effect of LEAP on compulsive exercise behaviour, and the predictive ability of CET subscales on various outcomes. The CET was compared to other exercise measures to assess its superiority in predicting eating psychopathology. LEAP was superior in reducing the scores of the CET's Avoidance and Rule Driven Behaviour and Exercise Rigidity subscales. All subscales made a contribution to the respective models. The CET was superior to other measures in predicting eating pathology. The results lend credibility to LEAP's ability to reduce core parts of compulsive exercise. Compensatory eating disorder (CED) is a newly proposed 'other specified feeding and eating disorder' characterized by recurrent non-purging compensatory behaviors (e.g., compulsive exercise and/or food restriction), overvaluation of weight/shape, the absence of objective binge-eating episodes, and the absence of low weight or recent significant weight loss. This study compared individuals with CED to individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), or binge-eating disorder (BED) on measures of psychiatric impairment, eating-disorder (ED) symptomatology, and comorbid internalizing disorders. Adults (N = 187) with CED, AN, BN, or BED completed measures of ED-related-psychiatric impairment and ED symptomatology. Structured clinical interviews were administered to assess ED and internalizing-disorder diagnoses. Linear regression models were fit to compare the CED group to full-threshold ED groups on psychiatric impairment, body dissatisfaction, cognitive restraint, negative attitudes towards obesity, and weight suppression. A chi-square difference test examined group differences on internalizing-disorder prevalence. Results indicated that the CED group had high levels of psychiatric impairment, yet psychiatric impairment was significantly lower in the CED group compared to other groups. The AN group had significantly lower body dissatisfaction than the CED group. Individuals with CED had similar cognitive restraint, negative attitudes towards obesity, internalizing psychopathology, and weight suppression compared to other ED groups. Individuals with CED had substantial ED psychopathology and internalizing-disorder prevalence, comparable to individuals with full-threshold EDs. Individuals with CED had high levels of psychiatric impairment, but their impairment was lower than individuals with full-threshold EDs. Metabolic syndrome (MetS), a precursor to cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes, is rapidly increasing in young adults. Accordingly, earlier interventions aimed at combating the onset of MetS in young adults are required. However, current behavioral interventions have failed to consider the eating behaviors that precede disease development, likely contributing to the consistently high failure rates of these interventions. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the associations between eating behaviors and MetS severity (MetS index) in a sample of young adults. A sample of 104 (non-Hispanic White: 45; non-Hispanic Black: 49; Hispanic White: 5; Asian: 5) young adult (age: 23.1 ± 4.4) males and females (F:61, M:43) completed anthropometric, blood pressure, blood glucose, and blood lipid assessments; each of which were used to calculate a continuous MetS index score. Participants also completed the revised version of the 18-item Three-factor Eating Questionnaire to measure emotional eating (EmE), uncontrolled eating (UE), and cognitive restraint (CR). EmE was positively associated with MetS index for young adult females (p = 0.033) and non-Hispanic Black participants (p = 0.050), but not male (p = 0.506) or non-Hispanic White participants (p = 0.558). Additionally, MetS index was greater in the highest EmE tertile compared to the lowest EmE tertile for the total sample (p = 0.037) and young adult females (p = 0.015). UE and CR were not associated with MetS index. Inappropriate compensatory behaviors (ICBs), including purging, restricting, and excessive exercising, are key symptoms of several eating disorders (EDs). Studies have found positive associations between trauma and ICBs, although few studies have explored mechanisms that may explain these relationships. Emotion dysregulation has been posited as a mechanism that explains associations among ICBs and trauma. Given that individuals with high neuroticism may be particularly likely to use ICBs to regulate emotions following a trauma, the purpose of this study was to test whether neuroticism moderated the relationship between trauma-related symptoms and each type of ICB (purging, restricting, and excessive exercise). A community sample of adults with a DSM-5 ED (N = 263; 83.7 % female) completed measures of trauma-related symptoms, ED psychopathology, and personality. Zero-inflated negative binomial models revealed that trauma-related symptoms alone predicted restricting and purging behavior. In addition, we found that neuroticism alone predicted the presence of excessive exercise. We found no significant interaction between trauma-symptoms and neuroticism. Although past research has documented high rates of co-occurring ED and PTSD, the connections between trauma-related symptoms and ICBs are complex and may be unique to each type of ICB. Given that neuroticism may not influence the relationship between trauma-related symptoms and ICBs, more research should be done to establish an understanding of factors that could explain the relationship between ICBs and trauma-related symptoms. Weight discrimination, defined as mistreatment of people based on body weight, is associated with body image concerns and eating disorder (ED) symptoms. Military veterans are particularly vulnerable to developing ED symptoms, which may be due to experiences of weight discrimination resulting from the military's strict weight and fitness requirements. However, no previous study has examined these associations among veterans. We investigated relationships between weight discrimination during and after military service and shape/weight concerns and ED symptoms in post-9/11 veterans. Based on evidence for gender differences in weight discrimination, body image, and ED symptoms, we also examined whether gender moderated these associations. Participants were randomly selected from the population of post-9/11 U.S. veterans who had been discharged from the military within the previous 18 months. A total of 1494 veterans completed the Everyday Discrimination Scale, Eating Disorders Examination-Questionnaire, and the Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale-5. Women were more likely to report weight discrimination and had higher levels of ED symptoms and shape/weight concerns than men. Weight discrimination in and after leaving the military were positively associated with shape/weight concerns and ED symptoms in the full sample and among men and women. Gender moderated the association between weight discrimination after leaving the military and shape/weight concerns such that the association was stronger among men. Both male and female veterans may be vulnerable to developing ED symptoms, in part due to weight discrimination experienced during and after military service. We sought to (1) compare self-concept clarity (SCC; the degree to which a person possesses a confidently defined, internally consistent, and stable sense of self) between female participants with and without eating disorders, (2) examine associations between SCC deficits and severity of eating disorder specific and related psychopathology in individuals with eating disorders, and (3) determine if there is a unique association between SCC deficits and eating disorder severity, controlling for related psychopathology. Participants (M age = 23.16 years) with eating disorders (n = 121) and controls (n = 63) completed semi-structured clinical interviews and self-report assessments. SCC deficits were significantly greater in the eating disorder compared to the control group. In the eating disorder group, greater SCC deficits were significantly associated with greater severity of eating pathology, depression, impulsivity, and trait anxiety. In a hierarchical regression analysis, significant associations between SCC deficits and Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) Global scores were better accounted for by shared variance with anxiety. This study aimed to determine which weight-and-body-related attitudes and behaviors were most predictive of Eating Competence (EC) in college students amidst COVID-19, according to gender. This cross-sectional study was part of a larger study in which an online survey was administered during autumn quarter 2020 to undergraduate students at a northwestern U.S. public university. Measures included EC (ecSI 2.0™), weight-and-body shame and/or guilt (WEB SG), weight satisfaction, current weight loss effort, and eating disorder risk. Of the 1996 respondents included in the final analyses, 40.2 % were eating competent (ecSI 2.0™ ≥32). Gender distribution was 71.6 % women, 23.1 % men, and 4.6 % trans-and-gender non-conforming (TGNC). WEB SG and WEB-S were higher in women and TGNC than in men. Weight satisfaction was lower in women and TGNC students than men, and 47.3 % of the sample was trying to lose weight at the time of the study. Eating disorder (ED) risk was prevalent with nearly 34 % scoring ≥2 on SCOFF and 33 % reporting they saw themselves as having an ED now or in the past. Significant factors of EC varied for each gender, although WEB-S was a shared model factor for all genders. EC may be protective, as this was related to less WEB-S in all genders; less WEB-G and greater weight satisfaction in men and women; and lower likelihood of ED risk and trying to lose weight among women. Further research is needed to elucidate whether these maladaptive weight-and-body attitudes and behaviors in college students can be improved to increase EC. Restriction of food intake and counting calories as part of weight loss programs are thought to trigger eating behaviors and attitudes which can lead to eating disorders. We have developed a treatment model, Regulation of Cues (ROC), that targets appetitive traits, including food responsiveness and satiety responsiveness, which could address overeating at an implicit level and reduce risk of detrimental behaviors and attitudes. This manuscript evaluates eating disorder symptoms, attitudes, and behaviors among adults with overweight or obesity randomized to ROC, behavioral weight loss (BWL), a combination of ROC + BWL (ROC+) and an active comparator (AC). Participants included 271 adults with a body mass index of 25 to 45, age 18 to 65 years, and a lack of comorbidities that could interfere with participation. Assessments occurred at baseline, mid-treatment (6 months), post-treatment (12-months) and 6- and 12-month follow-up. During treatment, participants in all four arms showed decreases in Eating, Weight, and Shape concerns on the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire and binge eating symptoms on the Binge Eating Scale which were maintained at 6-month follow-up but increased at the 12-month follow-up. Both the ROC+ and BWL arms showed increases in Restraint during treatment which dissipated after treatment ended. This study contributes to a growing body of literature demonstrating that weight loss programs are not associated with increases in eating disorder symptoms. Objective: The aim of this study was to translate, modify, and validate the Adult Picky Eating Questionnaire (APEQ) for use in China.Methods: Based on standard procedures, the APEQ was translated into Chinese. Four items were added in the final Chinese version of the APEQ (C-APEQ). For testing the psychometric properties of the C-APEQ, a total of 1069 participants (17-24 years; 52.57% women) were recruited from two universities in mainland China.Results: Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis supported the previous four-factor structure of the APEQ. Findings also showed that the C-APEQ had adequate internal consistency (α = 0.874) and test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.778). The C-APEQ demonstrated strong measurement invariance across gender. Furthermore, the C-APEQ composite score presented positive and significant correlations with eating disturbance, psychological distress, and psychological inflexibility. It also showed a negative and significant correlation with food-related life satisfaction.Conclusion: Findings suggested that the Chinese version of the APEQ demonstrated sound psychometric properties. Thus, the C-APEQ can be a useful tool in future studies to accurately assess picky eating among adult population and explore the relationships between picky eating and other physical and psychological outcomes in a Chinese context. Stressors unique to military families may place dependents of military service members of both sexes at high-risk for disordered-eating. Yet, there are no data examining sex-related differences in eating pathology and distress among this population. Therefore, we examined disordered-eating attitudes and associated psychosocial characteristics in adolescent military dependents at high-risk for both eating disorders and adult obesity (i.e., BMI ≥ 85th percentile and elevated anxiety symptoms and/or loss-of-control eating). One-hundred-twenty-five (55.2% female) adolescent (12-17 y) military dependents were studied prior to entry in an eating disorder and obesity prevention trial. Youth were administered the Eating Disorder Examination interview to determine disordered-eating attitudes, and completed questionnaires to assess self-esteem, social functioning, and depression. Girls and boys did not differ in BMIz (p = .66) or race/ethnicity (p = .997/p = .55). Adjusting for relevant covariates, girls and boys did not differ significantly with regard to disordered-eating global scores (p = .38), self-esteem (p = .23), or social functioning (p = .19). By contrast, girls reported significantly more symptoms of depression (p = .001). Adolescent male and female dependents at high-risk for eating disorders and adult obesity reported comparable levels of eating-related and psychosocial stress. Objective: Negative affect is a precipitant for binge eating in bulimia nervosa (BN). The purpose of the current study was to examine the effect of negative affect on food choices on a more granular level among individuals with BN using a computerized Food Choice Task.Method: Individuals with BN (n = 25) and healthy controls (HC, n = 21) participated in a computerized Food Choice Task following negative and neutral affect inductions, across two study sessions. During the task participants rated high and low-fat food items for Healthiness and Tastiness. Individuals then made a series of choices between a neutral-rated food and high and low-fat foods and were then given a snack based upon these choices.Results: Overall negative affect score increased significantly for both the BN and HC groups following the negative affect induction. The group of individuals with BN, relative to the HC group, was less likely to choose high-fat foods (z = -2.763, p = 0.006), and these choices were not impacted by affect condition. Health ratings influenced food choices significantly more among individuals with BN than HC (z = 2.55, p = 0.01).Discussion: Induction of negative affect was successful, yet was not related to an increase in proportion of high-fat food choices in the group of individuals with BN. The Food Choice Task captured dietary restriction in individuals with BN and results highlight the utility of this task as a probe to examine how the values of healthiness and tastiness impact food choice in individuals with BN. My Fitness Pal (MFP) is a calorie-tracking smartphone application that is gaining popularity worldwide. Although MFP has the potential to be a cheap and efficient weight-loss tool, concerns that MFP could trigger, maintain, or exacerbate eating disorder symptoms have been raised. Preliminary research has documented associations between MFP use and eating disorder symptoms in women with eating disorders and in undergraduate students. However, whether these associations exist additionally in a male-only sample has not been tested. Thus, we aimed to estimate MFP usage and examine its association with eating disorder symptoms and psychosocial impairment in a male sample. Cross-sectional data were analysed from 122 male participants (Mage = 28.4, SD = 8.93) recruited primarily through fitness-related social media sites. Around half (56%) of the sample reported having used MFP. Nearly 40% of users perceived MFP as a factor contributing to disorder eating symptoms to some extent. MFP users reported significantly higher levels of attitudinal (dichotomous thinking, shape, weight, and eating concerns) and behavioural (binge eating, dietary restraint) eating disorder symptoms and psychosocial impairment than non-users. Effect sizes were large. MFP use also predicted unique variance in global attitudinal symptoms after controlling for eating disorder behaviours, impairment, and demographics. That nearly one-third of men perceived MFP as a factor contributing to their disordered eating highlights the possible utility of enquiring about the use of calorie-tracking apps when screening and assessing for eating disorder symptoms in men. Shame and guilt are associated with greater eating disorder symptomatology, including binge eating. These emotional states may be related to binge eating as a result of one's attempt to use food as a means of coping. Little research has examined associations between weight-specific negative emotions and eating behaviors. Even less research has examined the role of intuitive eating as a mitigating factor of these associations. This study examined the relationships among weight-related shame and guilt and binge eating symptomatology in a sample of 196 undergraduate women. Further, we assessed the role of intuitive eating as a moderator of these relationships. Female college students completed an online questionnaire assessing demographics, weight-related shame and guilt, intuitive eating, and binge eating. After accounting for covariates, including body mass index, multiple regression analyses revealed that weight-related shame and guilt were related to increased binge eating symptomatology. Further, intuitive eating attenuated the relationship between weight-related shame and binge eating, but not between weight-related guilt and binge eating. Youth with loss of control eating (LOC) have poorer social relationships than youth without LOC. However, perceived family functioning among youth reporting LOC is relatively unexplored. We examined perceived family functioning among 990 twins (age = 17.47 ± 0.71 years, 53% female) from the Colorado Center for Antisocial Drug Dependence with (n = 158) and without (n = 832) LOC. LOC was assessed with one binary item. Associations between family functioning and LOC were examined using general linear models that accounted for dependence in twin data. Girls with greater family conflict had higher odds of endorsing LOC (p = .02), but not after accounting for depressive symptoms (p = .26). Further analysis indicated that depressive symptoms mediated the association between LOC and family conflict (p = .04). This finding is consistent with an interpersonal model, which proposes that interpersonal difficulties lead to negative emotional states, which promotes LOC as a method of coping with negative affect. Family cohesion and expressiveness were not associated with LOC in girls, and none of the family functioning variables were associated with LOC in boys (ps > .05). Purpose: To examine the potential factor structure of the Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale (EDDS) in a sample of individuals with bipolar disorder.Method: Exploratory common factor analyses were conducted in a sample of 1031 people with bipolar disorder as defined by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-TR.Results: Approximately 27% of participants had a comorbid eating disorder. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a 3 factor solution (i.e., shape/weight concerns; binge eating behaviors, compensatory behavior).Conclusions: The 3-factor solution of the EDDS in a bipolar disorder sample is consistent with major eating disorder symptom domains. While previous literature suggests that emotion dysregulation is a salient factor contributing to the onset and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs), less is known about how maladaptive, cognitively oriented regulation strategies such as rumination and thought suppression may be uniquely related to ED symptoms in men and women. The present study sought to examine the independent associations of ruminative brooding and thought suppression with ED symptoms, after controlling for negative affect intensity, and assess whether these associations differ by gender. Participants were 263 undergraduates who completed a series of questionnaires, including measures of ED symptoms (Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale), ruminative brooding (Ruminative Response Scale), and thought suppression (White Bear Suppression Inventory). Generalized linear models examined main effects of ruminative brooding and thought suppression and their interactions with gender on ED symptoms, controlling for negative affect intensity. Higher ruminative brooding was associated with higher binge eating among women. Thought suppression was associated with higher vomiting and fasting frequency in both genders, with a stronger association between suppression and fasting in men compared to women. Together results demonstrate the unique contributions of cognitive perseveration and avoidance in ED symptomatology; specifically, ruminative brooding may be a salient factor contributing to binge eating in women, while high levels of thought suppression among males may contribute to fasting. Findings highlight the potential importance of examining and differentially targeting specific facets of cognitive emotion regulation in men and women engaging in ED behaviors. Objective: Perfectionism is a transdiagnostic factor across eating disorders, anxiety, and depression. Previous research has shown anxiety mediates the relationship between perfectionism and eating disorders in adults. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between anxiety/depression, perfectionism and eating disorder symptoms in children and adolescents with eating disorders.Method: Structural equation modeling was used to investigate three models in a clinical sample of children and adolescents (N = 231, M age = 14.5, 100% female): (1) anxiety and depression as mediators of the relationship between perfectionism and eating disorder symptoms, (2) eating disorder symptoms as a mediator of the relationship between perfectionism and anxiety and/or depression, and (3) perfectionism as a mediator of the relationship between anxiety/depression and eating disorders.Results: Results indicated that both models 1 and 2 fit the data well, while model 3 provided a poor fit. These findings suggest that in clinical populations of children and adolescents, anxiety and depression mediate the relationship between perfectionism and eating disorder symptoms, and there is also a reciprocal relationship whereby eating disorders mediate the association between perfectionism, and anxiety and/or depression.Discussion: The results highlight the importance of further research to determine whether targeting perfectionism is helpful in the treatment of eating disorders and comorbid anxiety and depression in young people. Identifying predictors of increases in weight (or in fat mass) is important for understanding the genesis of obesity and for the design of prevention programs. We examined the predictive utility of 6 variables that have been predictive of weight gain in past research: depression, disinhibition, family history of overweight, body dissatisfaction, self-reported dieting and weight suppression (the difference between highest past and current weight). Percentage fat gain was evaluated with DEXA. We tested these variables as predictors of fat gain two years later in 294 female first-year students who were selected to have characteristics associated with future weight gain. Participants were categorized as weight stable or weight gainers at the two-year follow-up and logistic regression was used to evaluate the independent predictive ability of the 6 variables. Baseline body fat was entered as a covariate and predicted fat gain, as expected. The only significant predictor of the 6 tested was weight suppression, with those gaining weight showing greater weight suppression at baseline. Previous research has supported weight suppression as a robust predictor of future weight gain mostly among individuals with eating disorders. The current study indicates that weight suppression is a predictor of long-term fat gain among nonclinical female first-year students who were overwhelmingly in a healthy weight range. Body checking and body avoidance, considered to be behavioural manifestations of core attitudinal disturbances of body image, are theorized to be important contributors to the development and maintenance of eating disorder symptoms. Currently, however, it is unclear whether body checking and body avoidance accounts for variance in disordered eating behaviours beyond core attitudinal components of body image (i.e., over-evaluation, preoccupation, dissatisfaction). This was the objective of the present study. Cross-sectional data were analysed from 320 females recruited through undergraduate psychology programs and throughout the community. Bivariate correlations demonstrated that body checking and avoidance were significantly and positively correlated with each attitudinal component and with each measure of disordered eating (overeating, objective binge eating, and disinhibition). However, body checking and avoidance did not contribute variance (all R2changes ≤ 0.01) to each disordered eating behaviour beyond the variance accounted for by attitudinal components. Future research should aim to identify what specific and unique function these body image behaviours serve. Many factors have been shown to impact treatment outcome in eating disorders, including illness related variables (e.g. symptom severity), and broader clinical features (e.g. personality pathology). Less is known about the potential impact of patient related variables, such as patients' views regarding treatment suitability and success. This study explored the impact of eating disorder severity, personality features and patient expectations regarding treatment suitability and success, on eating pathology at treatment end. Participants were 128 adults with diagnosed eating disorders who completed a course of evidence-based psychological therapy in a community eating disorders service in the UK. Patients completed measures of eating disorder psychopathology and personality features at treatment commencement, and a measure of patient expectations regarding change after session six. They repeated the measure of eating disorder psychopathology at treatment end. All patients had some level of positive expectations regarding the suitability and potential success of treatment after session six. Eating disorder severity significantly predicted eating pathology at treatment end. However, strength of positive expectations regarding treatment success significantly predicted eating pathology over and above baseline level of eating disorder severity. Personality features at baseline were not significantly related to treatment outcome. Findings suggest that patients' expectations regarding the likely success of therapy have a significant impact on treatment outcome. Patients who develop a strong belief that treatment will work may be more likely to actively engage in the process of therapy to achieve their recovery goals. Objective: Summarize and evaluate self-report measures of food craving, provide suggestions on future directions for the field of food craving measurement, and deliver guidance on how to select a food craving measure.Methods: Online bibliographical databases (PsycINFO and PubMed) were searched for peer-reviewed literature on self-report measures of food craving.Results: There is a wide selection of food craving measures that researchers and clinicians can use to assess state, past, and trait food cravings. Most questionnaires were tested on homogenous samples and their psychometric properties in older, male, and socioeconomically, racially, and ethnically diverse samples is largely unknown. Few questionnaires were tested in samples with overweight/obesity or eating disorders. Relatively few questionnaires adequately evaluate contextual factors that can trigger craving. There appears to be limited data on the predictive validity of food craving measures in regards to response to eating disorder treatment. A decision tree was provided to help researchers and clinicians select a food craving measure that is best suited to a particular clinical or research purpose.Conclusions: It is recommended that researchers adequately assess the contextual factors that may trigger craving and the multi-sensory nature of craving for food. It would be beneficial for researchers to evaluate the psychometrics of food craving measures in more diverse samples (in terms of sex, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, weight status, and eating disorder psychopathology). More longitudinal studies should be conducted to provide information on the predictive validity of food craving measures regarding response to eating disorder treatment. Furthermore, it is suggested that researchers assess which tactics people use to reduce the frequency and strength of food cravings and restrain their consumption of craved foods. Dissonance-based eating disorder prevention leads to decreases in risk factors for these disorders. Although controlled trials have demonstrated that targeted, manualized programs reduce eating disorder risk, concerns regarding implementation and dissemination remain. A primary concern is the difficulty in adapting programs for a high school setting for populations at highest risk: adolescents. This paper describes the REbeL Peer Education model and assesses the initial pilot trials of the intervention. The program is novel in that it utilizes a voluntary, self-selection model that is sustainable in a high school setting, and focuses on empowerment and effective cognitive dissonance based prevention activities. High school peer-educators self-selected into the semi-manualized dissonance based intervention. Group activities were peer led, designed to critique the thin ideal, and designed to empower macro (school and larger community wide) changes in the pilot trial (N=47) assess the effectiveness and feasibility of the intervention. Results of the initial pilot study revealed preliminary support for the feasibility of the program, increases in feelings of empowerment, and decreases in eating disorder cognitions and behaviors with moderate to large effect sizes. Feedback from participants indicated that the intervention was enjoyable, educational, and empowering. This study is the first to adapt dissonance-based prevention models to a semi-manualized, peer-led, prevention program integrated into high school settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A brief, three-factor structure for the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) has been identified that has stronger psychometric properties than the original four-factor EDE-Q structure. However, there is a need for independent replication of the brief version in different samples, and examination of how comparable the brief version is in women and men of diverse ages. This study compared factor structure fit and other psychometric properties between the original and brief versions in three independent samples of adults to evaluate the reliability and validity of this brief version. It also examined measurement invariance across gender in a middle-aged community sample. Participants included university women (N = 659), university women and men (N = 358), and crowdsourced community women and men (N = 544). Across samples, compared to the original version the brief version demonstrated greater internal consistency, somewhat less item overlap, and superior model fit in confirmatory factor analyses, although some fit indices fell below recommended cut-offs. Separate confirmatory factor analyses of the brief version in community women and men suggested the brief version may better fit community men than women, and measurement invariance across gender for the brief version was not supported for the community sample. This independent replication supports the factorial validity of the brief version in three samples of students and crowdsourced community adults, and highlights the importance of further examination of the psychometric properties of this brief three-factor version across gender and age categories, among others sample characteristics. Findings regarding ethnic differences in eating disorder diagnoses and risk factors have been mixed. This study evaluated whether there are ethnic differences in eating disorder prevalence, risk factors, and the predictive relations of the risk factors to future eating disorder onset. We used a large sample of young women followed longitudinally over three years to increase sensitivity to detect differences and to provide the first test of ethnic differences in the relation of risk factors to future onset of eating disorders. Females with body image concerns (N = 1177) were recruited from high schools and colleges for trials of a body acceptance eating disorder prevention program. They completed surveys and interviews at baseline and at 1-, 6-, 12-, 24-, and 36-month follow-up. Significant differences between ethnic groups were found for two of the 13 baseline risk factors: thin-ideal internalization and body mass index. No significant differences in later onset rates among ethnic groups were found. There were also no reliable ethnic differences in the relation of risk factors for future eating disorder onset. These findings suggest that eating disorders affect ethnic minorities as much as Whites and that there are more overlapping risk factors shared among various ethnic groups than differences.
