Water erosion, a notorious major threat to food security and ecosystem sustainability, is strongly conditioned by spatial and temporal scale effects. This paper systematically reviews the scale issues in runoff and sediment delivery (SIRSD) as a research field by integrating the traditional review approach and bibliometric analysis. This review summarises SIRSD's roots and the scale effect on runoff and sediment delivery. Then, we provide quantitative insights into the SIRSD domain's development history, thematic structure, geographic distribution, international cooperation, and methodologies. Findings show that: i) SIRSD arises from the gap between the non-linearity of runoff and sediment delivery across scales and our ability to measure it. Point-based and short-term measurements cannot capture the non-linearities from the spatio-temporal heterogeneities and cross-scale interactions of factors or processes. ii) Previous literature provides evidence that the spatial scaling of specific runoff (r), soil erosion (SE), sediment yield (SSY), or sediment delivery ratio (SDR) with drainage area (A) or slope length (L) exhibits contrasting patterns due to distinct mechanisms. Infiltration-excess and saturation-excess processes account for inverse and positive r - A relations, respectively. Interrill-erosion and rill-erosion cause inverse and positive SE-L relations. Hillslope-erosion and channel/bank-erosion explain inverse and positive SSY-A relations. Downstream increasing deposition and additional sediment inputs drive inverse and positive SDR-A relations. These scaling relationships can be nonlinear or complex due to spatial heterogeneities in land use, vegetation, topography, climate, lithology, and soil characteristics. Hence, applying an empirical scaling equation developed from the region with distinct environmental contexts is not recommended. Furthermore, the existing scaling patterns or equations may require updating given global climate and land use change. iii) SIRSD is a complex and multidisciplinary issue investigated by scientists from 93 countries since 1928. International research has substantially facilitated the understanding of SIRSD; still, more collaboration should focus on less-developed countries with high soil and water loss risks and urgent conservation needs, such as those in Africa and South America under cropland expansion. iv) Scale mismatch and scale break have discredited large-scale erosion and sediment assessments. Incorporating gully and bank erosion into modelling, extending the scale range of the L factor, and expanding the sediment scaling scope from watershed to slope may make a difference. Therefore, more research with nested design incorporating multiple scales is necessary for cross-scale analysis and scalable modelling. Large reservoirs can considerably alter the water-sediment dynamics and morphology of alluvial rivers. Here we review the effects of two mega reservoirs operated with different regulation modes. The Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) on the Yangtze River has a typical anti-seasonal regulation mode, while the Xiaolangdi Reservoir (XLDR) on the Yellow River undergoes a swift drawdown process shortly before the flood season through the Water and Sediment Regulation Scheme (WSRS). We examine the influence of these regulation schemes on downstream water-sediment dynamics and find that vast sedimentation occurred in both the TGR (128.4 Mt./yr) and XLDR (210.2 Mt./yr). The two rivers have experienced different changes in downstream sediment transport capacity, with coincident flood and sediment peaks in the Yangtze River but with sediment peaks lagging behind flood flow peaks in the Yellow River. On the Yangtze River, highly unsaturated flows from the TGR led to widespread incision downstream, while on the Yellow River, such flows did not induce significant erosion in the first two years following impoundment. The low annual runoff and high sediment yield of the Yellow River mean that riverbed erosion occurred mainly when the water discharge and sediment transport capacity were enhanced by the WSRS. In both rivers, the riverbed eroded and coarsened downstream of the mega dams, lowering the dry season water level. The increase in channel roughness maintained or even raised flood season water levels, potentially increasing flood risk. Sediment budgets reveal that the river segments downstream of the dams switched from sediment sinks to sources due to riverbed incision. Despite new supply from downstream reaches, sediment deficits arising from dam interception and other human activities within the drainage basins have posed significant challenges to the sustainability of the Yangtze and Yellow river deltas, resulting in lower accumulation rates or even transition from progradation to degradation in subaqueous areas. In contrast to the anti-seasonal regulation mode of the TGR, the WSRS of the XLDR has proven very effective at mitigating reservoir sedimentation and has boosted the quantity of sediment reaching the sea, facilitating delta stability and coastal sediment replenishment. Broken foreland basins are caused by crustal-scale contractional basement structures that compartmentalize (or break) a contiguous retroarc or collisional foreland basin into smaller disconnected basins. Broken foreland basins differ from their unbroken counterparts in their deformational, depositional, and geodynamic framework. Whereas contiguous (unbroken) foreland basins are generated mainly by regional flexural loading due to shortening of supracrustal cover strata and uppermost basement in organized ramp-flat thrust systems, broken foreland basins are governed principally by isolated topographic loads and structural tilting associated with widely spaced crustal-scale reverse faults that accommodate intraplate basement shortening. These structural contrasts foster either décollement-style fold-thrust belts (orogenic wedges) with large integrated erosional drainage systems (watersheds) spanning diverse sediment source regions (including thin-skinned fold-thrust belts, elevated hinterland zones, accreted terranes, and magmatic arcs) or independent foreland block uplifts with local drainage systems dominated by basement sources. Although the genesis of broken foreland basins has been uniquely attributed to flat slab subduction, these basins are also sensitive to inherited structural, stratigraphic, thermal, and rheological configurations, as well as synorogenic mass redistribution in relationship to climate, erosion, sediment transport efficiency, and sediment accumulation. Despite the many modern and ancient examples, questions persist over the underlying geodynamic processes that promote development of a broken or compartmentalized foreland basin instead of a single regionally unified flexural foreland basin. Additional uncertainties and misconceptions surround the criteria used to define broken foreland basins and their linkages to subduction dynamics (chiefly slab geometry), strain magnitude, and structural reactivation. Here we review the tectonic framework of broken foreland basins—with emphasis on South and North America (Pampean and Laramide provinces)—and propose that their genesis can be ascribed to a combination of: (i) underlying conditions in the form of tectonic inheritance, including precursor structural, stratigraphic, thermal, and rheological heterogeneities and anisotropies; and (ii) mechanical triggers, such as increased stress, enhanced horizontal stress transmission, and/or selective crustal strengthening or weakening. How well do deep-sea sedimentary archives track erosion in upland sources, driven by climatic change or tectonic forcing? Located on the western edge of South Asian monsoon influence, the Indus River system is particularly sensitive to variations in monsoon rainfall and thus provides a unique opportunity to estimate the nature of sedimentary signal propagation (i.e., recognizable pulses of sediment) through a large river basin under different climatic conditions. In this review we examine the impact that changing monsoon rainfall has had on NW Himalayan landscapes and its foreland since the middle Miocene. Rates of erosion are linked to summer monsoon rains over tectonic timescales but patterns of erosion are more explicitly linked to tectonically-driven rock uplift. Positive feedback between rock uplift and orographic precipitation drives increased erosion and transport from the Lesser Himalaya since the Miocene. After 2 Ma, erosion increasingly shifts to the Inner Lesser Himalaya. As defined multiproxy evidence, strong monsoon rainfall intervals broadly result in increased erosion and faster sediment transport together with increased chemical weathering, although the latter is further linked with global temperature and to the magnitude of sediment recycling within the routing system. We estimate that during the Holocene, most sediment (67–89% of the total ~6000 km3 or 16.3 x 1012 t) delivered to the ocean was sourced either from direct bedrock erosion through channel incision linked to higher discharge or from remobilized, recycled glacial sediment initially deposited during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Post-LGM sediment is primarily stored within the delta plain and shelf clinoform systems. Over the last 14 kyr, average mass delivery rates (936–1404 Mt/y) are much higher than pre-damming estimates (pre-1940s; 250–300 Mt/y). To reconcile observations with pre-damming estimates, high sediment supply rates, probably during strong monsoon intervals over the early Holocene, are required. Long-term rates were high (182-273 Mt/y) during a middle Miocene strong monsoon interval. Quaternary Indus submarine fan sedimentation is limited to sea-level lowstands, at which times shelf and delta sediment is eroded and reworked into deep water. As a result, and for at least the past 2–3 m.y., most sediment delivered to the Indus submarine fan was initially eroded from bedrock during strong summer monsoon intervals but deposited into the fan under weak monsoon intervals. During the most recent sea level lowstand, only ~24% of sediment deposited in the fan was derived from synchronous onshore bedrock erosion, with the remaining accounted for by recycled terrace, floodplain, and shelf clinoform system sediment. Variations in monsoon intensity over the last glacial cycle strongly impact the locus of onshore erosion, with increased relative Himalayan bedrock erosion during times of strong, wet monsoon intervals and increased Karakoram bedrock erosion during drier glacial intervals.
