• The Vosges Massif: a formerly half-glaciated massif. • 10Be- and 26Al-based catchment-wide denudation rates at the massif scale. • 40% of the studied catchments (9/22) are in cosmogenic disequilibrium. • Glacial deposits and former glacial cover correlates with 26Al/10Be ratios. • Sediments sampled in non-steady catchments might have survived several glacial cycles. Although catchment-wide denudation rates inferred from in situ cosmogenic nuclide concentrations measured in stream sediments has represented a ground-breaking progress in geomorphology over the last three decades, most of these studies rely on 10Be concentrations only. It seems that this current and routine one-nuclide approach to infer catchment-wide denudation rates has somehow overshadowed two key assumptions that are cosmogenic steady-state and short sediment transit time at the catchment scale. Although a paired-nuclide approach allow testing these assumptions, it is rarely performed on stream sediments and this can become highly problematic in slow-eroding, formerly glaciated contexts. In this study, we thus measure both 10Be and 26Al in stream sediments pertaining to twenty-one rivers draining an entire low mountain range: the Vosges Massif (NE France). The latter exhibits a sharp gradient between its southern and northern part in terms of lithology, morphometry and climate. Moreover, if its northern part remained void of glacial cover during Quaternary cold stages, its southern part was significantly and repeatedly glaciated. We aim to assess the factors that control the denudation of the Vosges Mountains and to quantitatively explore the impact of both repeated glacial cover and storage of glacially derived sediments on 26Al/10Be ratios, hence cosmogenic (un-)steadiness in modern river samples. Our results first show that elevation, slope, channel steepness and precipitation are primarily organised along a N-S increasing trend. 10Be- and 26Al-derived catchment-wide denudation rates accordingly range from 34 ± 1 to 66 ± 2, and 41 ± 3 to 73 ± 7 mm/ka, respectively, in thirteen investigated catchments that are in cosmogenic equilibrium. Lithological contrasts may control the pattern of denudation with a higher erodibility of the sandstone-dominated catchment to the north compared to the crystalline-dominated catchments to the south. Our results also show that catchments in strong cosmogenic disequilibrium (26Al/10Be ratios from 1.4 to 5.2) spatially cluster in the SW part of the Vosges Mountains that was the most intensively glaciated during Quaternary cold stages. If this precludes any conclusion about controlling factors at the whole massif scale, this study is the first to quantify the impact of past glaciations on cosmogenic (un-)steadiness measured in stream sediments. A statistically significant relationship between the degree of depletion of the 26Al/10Be ratios and the spatial pattern of glaciation is found: the larger the former glacial cover in each catchment, the lower the 26Al/10Be ratio. Equally important is the significant correlation reported between the degree of depletion of the 26Al/10Be ratios and the proportion of glacial and fluvio-glacial deposits within each catchment. These two relationships underline the link between cosmogenic unsteadiness in the stream cosmogenic signal and long-lasting and repetitive ice shielding, and complex sediment routing systems in glacial environments, respectively. We thus argue to systematically measure 26Al in complement to 10Be and to test the steady-state assumption when it comes to infer catchment-wide denudation rates from modern stream sediments, especially in slow eroding, formerly glaciated landscapes. The knowledge of dynamics and retreat patterns of marine-based ice streams under multiple stressors are of foremost importance for predicting Antarctic Ice Sheet response to climate changes. The Holocene palaeoglaciological record of former ice streams draining the northeast Antarctic Peninsula can elucidate the influences of changes in atmospheric and oceanic circulation and sea-level oscillations on the ice thinning and grounding line retreat. Here, terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN) dating of erratic boulders across the James Ross Island group sheds light on the pattern and timing of the ice recession along the two main arteries of the palaeo-ice drainage: Croft Trough and Prince Gustav Channel. The approach of using paired 10Be-26Al nuclides enabled an assessment of cosmogenic isotope inheritance and complex burial-exposure history, notably on the high-altitude volcanic mesas. The TCN ages suggest that the Prince Gustav Channel Ice Stream was thinning from at least ∼12 ka, with subsequent separation of the Antarctic Peninsula and James Ross Island ice masses by 10–8 ka. The transition from grounded ice to open marine conditions in the Croft Trough occurred rapidly at 8.6–7.2 ka, following the Early Holocene Warm Period, concomitant with eustatic and relative sea-level rise and incursions of warmer circumpolar waters. Grounding line retreat was possibly further accelerated by buoyancy response of thinning ice stream to low-gradient bed topography. The lessons of rapid deglaciation of James Ross Island palaeo-ice streams may provide analogues for recent or future intensification of pressures on Antarctic glaciers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The concentrations of atmospheric cosmogenic 10Be normalized to the solubilized fraction of its stable isotope 9Be have been measured in the authigenic phase leached from silicated continental sediments deposited since the upper Miocene in the northern Chad Basin. This method is validated by the systematic congruence with the biochronological estimations based on the fossil mammal evolutive degree of faunal assemblages. The fifty-five authigenic 10Be/9Be ages obtained along 12 logs distributed along two West–East cross sections that encompass best representative Mio-Pliocene outcrops including paleontological sites show a systematic stratigraphic decrease when considering all studied sedimentary facies extending from the Pleistocene up to 8Ma and allow performing geologic correlations otherwise impossible in the studied area. The resulting global sequence evidences and temporally specifies the succession of the main paleoenvironments that have developed in this region since the Miocene. Under the special conditions encountered in the northern Chad Basin, this study demonstrates that the authigenic 10Be/9Be ratio may be used as a dating tool of continental sedimentary deposits from 1 to 8Ma. The half-life of 10Be theoretically allowing dating up to 14Ma, it may have fundamental implications on important field research such as paleoclimatology and, through the dating of fossiliferous deposits in paleontology and paleoanthropology. Over the past decade, in situ-produced cosmogenic nuclides have revolutionised the study of landscape evolution. In particular, numerous studies have demonstrated that, in active tectonic settings, cosmic ray exposure dating of deformed or displaced geomorphic features makes it possible to quantify long-term deformation rates. In western European countries, erosion due to climatically driven processes and human activities is probably the factor that most limits the accuracy of exposure ages and landscape modification rates. In this study, we present the results of a depth-profiling technique applied to alluvial terraces located along the Rhoˆne and the Moyenne Durance rivers. The expected decrease with depth of the measured 10Be concentrations has been modelled using a χ2 inversion method in order to constrain the exposure history of the alluvial sediments. The results suggest that: (1) over the Quaternary, the local surface erosion rates including both regional uplift and climatically driven processes acting on landforms are on the order of 30 m/Myr in southeastern France, and (2) providing a fairly good bracketing of the exposure age, the modelled abandonment age of alluvial terraces affected by the Moyenne Durance Fault allows estimating incision rates, comparing the alluvial terrace elevations with topographic river profiles, and a minimum vertical slip rate value of roughly 0.02 mm/yr for the southern segment of the Moyenne Durance Fault. The Yakutat collision in SE Alaska – SW Yukon is an outstanding example of indentor tectonics. The impinging Yakutat block strongly controls the pattern of deformation inland. However, the relationship between this collision system and inherited tectonic structures such as the Denali, Totschunda, and Duke River Faults remains debated. A detailed geomorphological analysis, based on high-resolution imagery, digital elevation models, field observations, and cosmogenic nuclide dating, allow us to estimate new slip rates along these active structures. Our results show a vertical motion of 0.9 ± 0.3 mm/yr along the whole eastern Denali Fault, while the dextral component of the fault tapers to less than 1 mm/yr ∼80 km south of the Denali–Totschunda junction. In contrast, the Totschunda Fault accommodates 14.6 ± 2.7 mm/yr of right-lateral strike-slip along its central section ∼100 km south of the junction. Further south, preliminary observations suggest a slip rate comprised between 3.5 and 6.5 mm/yr along the westernmost part of the Duke River thrust fault. Our results highlight the complex partitioning of deformation inland of the Yakutat collision, where the role and slip rate of the main faults vary significantly over distances of ∼100 km or less. We propose a schematic model of present-day tectonics that suggests ongoing partitioning and reorganization of deformation between major inherited structures, relay zones, and regions of distributed deformation, in response to the radial stress and strain pattern around the Yakutat collision eastern syntaxis. Abstract: Cosmic Ray Exposure (CRE) dating applied to the active Séchilienne landslide (Romanche valley, Belledonne Massif, French Alps) provides information about its Holocene dynamics from initiation to present day activity. Glacier retreat at 1100 m a.s.l. is estimated at 16.6±0.6 10Be ka from glacially polished bedrock samples, with total deglaciation of the valley achieved at least by 13.3 ka. Application of the CRE method along vertical profiles sampled with a high spatial resolution of 3 m on the head scarp yields: (1) an initiation of the rock-slope failure at 6.4±1.4 10Be ka and (2) a continuous rock-slope failure activity with a mean head scarp exposure rate of 0.6 cm/yr. The data suggest an increase of the head scarp exposure rate between 2.3 and 1.0 ka. After this acceleration phase, the exposure rate is similar to that obtained by the present day monitoring data over 20 years in the depletion zone (1.3 cm/yr). Since the failure initiation occurred more than 5400 yr after the total deglaciation of the valley the slope failure does not appear as an immediate consequence of debutressing in the Romanche valley. This result is consistent with studies of other large alpine rockslides in the Alps. Failure initiation of the Séchilienne landslide occurred during the Holocene Climatic Optimum, a hot and wet period. The temperature and precipitation changes of this climatic optimum seem to have a worsening effect at the regional scale to trigger large mass wasting in this glacial alpine valley.
