AbstractTo elucidate the effects of energy input modes on energy efficiency and berry quality in continuous microwave drying, four energy input modes with variational working ways of magnetrons were investigated by using numerical simulation and bench experiments in a continuous microwave dryer. Energy efficiency was divided into absorption and conversion efficiency to study the change rule of drying process, and the retention rate of anthocyanins of berry’s representative nutrition ingredient was studied considering both of the temperature and its uniformity. Results indicate that the energy input modes affect the absorption efficiency by changing the distribution uniformity of electric field of material layer, and the conversion efficiency by altering the matching degree between the energy allocation and drying characteristics of berry, which are both determined by the ways of working magnetrons of different energy input modes. The conversion efficiency has a greater influence on the final energy efficiency, so the energy input mode should be paid attention to the provision of microwave energy by selecting proper way of working magnetrons according to the drying characteristics. The effect of temperature uniformity on anthocyanin degradation is more obvious with average temperature increasing gradually, where better uniformity of electric field strength should be provided to guarantee the quality of dried berry by adjusting the energy input mode. This study validates the mechanism of ultrasonic dehydration without transition of water into vapor. The process can be realized by cavitation dispersion of liquid initiated by collapse of cavitation bubbles of cylindrical shape formed in capillaries. The developed mathematical model considers the complete life cycle of cavitation bubbles, encompassing three stages: slow growth, rapid expansion with deformation, and collapse. The optimum range of sound pressure level from 150 dB (critical level) to 170 (limit level) at which cavitation dispersion of liquid from capillaries takes place has been determined. The optimum sample size corresponding to the ultrasonic wavelength in gas, at which the dehydrated productivity is maximized, has been determined. The mechanism of ultrasonic dispersion of liquid during drying was confirmed by experiments. Practical implementation of ultrasonic drying of food products (carrots) confirmed effectiveness of implementation of dehydration mechanism and provided a reduction of drying time by 1.9 times with a reduction of power consumption by 1.7 times. Spray drying of milk is a highly energy intensive process. In this study, thermodynamic and exergoeconomic analyses of two-stage spray drying plant have been executed. This plant was analyzed on the basis of various parameters such as energy efficiency, exergy efficiency, energy improvement potential, exergy improvement potential, etc. The energy and exergy efficiency of the plant were 72.90 and 35.15%, respectively. The maximum energy improvement potential was for drying whereas maximum exergy improvement potential was for homogenizer. It indicates huge scope in the technical improvement for drying chamber and homogenizer of the plant. The highest cost of processing was for cyclone separator (percentage relative cost difference: 44%) followed by drying chamber (percentage relative cost difference: 40.71%). Highest energy destroyed was calculated for drying chamber (195.83 kJ/kg) followed by VFBD (87.62 kJ/kg). Lowest energy efficiency was calculated for VFBD (34.64%) followed by drying chamber (50.04%). Highest energy improvement potential was estimated for drying chamber (97.86 kJ/kg). Highest relative energy destruction ratio was calculated for drying chamber (52.04%) followed by VFBD (23.30%). Highest energetic factor was calculated for drying chamber (28.22%) followed by homogenizer (16.71%). Based on these analyses, it was realized that performance of the spray drying plant may be substantially improved by some design improvement of drying chamber and homogenizer only. Net power plant efficiency is the ratio of exportable electrical power output to the product of fuel consumption rate and fuel heating value. Conventionally, power plants are designed to attain the maximum net power plant efficiency by using regenerative feed water heating, in which extracted steam from steam turbine is used to increase feed water temperature. An important factor that determines the net power plant efficiency is the temperature of flue gas exhausted from the power plant. Decreasing this temperature increases the net power plant efficiency. However, exhaust flue gas temperature should not be lower than the lower limit in order to avoid the corrosion resulting from condensation of sulfuric acid vapor in flue gas on heat exchanger tubes. The lower limit can be raised by reducing fuel moisture content and raising air temperature at boiler inlet. In this paper, it is proposed that low-pressure extracted steam should be used for fuel drying in steam dryer, and vapor released from steam dryer should be used for air heating in heat recovery air preheater. By doing so, the lower limit of exhaust flue gas temperature is decreased, and the net efficiency of the power plant is increased. Leakage of air in tumble dryers is an important parameter regarding the energy efficiency of the drying process. In general, tumble dryers are prone to leakage, therefore further investigation and optimization in this field is of great interest. This study investigates and quantifies leakage of air within the closed-loop system of an in-situ household heat pump tumble dryer. Each potential leakage location was characterized by leakage curve obtained either by isolated or cumulative measurements using system pressurization method. Based on the static pressure distribution within the closed-loop system, the leakage outflow and inflow were quantified. The leakage of air at the rear and front drum seal was evaluated with and without drum movement. The results indicated the highest leakage outflow rate at the heat pump housing, which represents 12,6% of the total drying air flow rate within the closed-loop system. For a biomass power plant, which uses a biomass fuel having a high moisture content, flue gas drying is an effective method of increasing the overall power plant efficiency. However, this method requires flue gas that has a high temperature. Most biomass power plants, however, are designed so that flue gas temperature is already reduced to a low value through the installation of economizer and air heater. This paper investigates the use of steam-air preheater to raise both air temperature and flue gas temperature. Therefore, steam-air preheater enhances the potential of flue gas dryer, and both devices can be used in conjunction to raise the overall efficiency of a biomass power plant. Models of power plant, flue gas dryer, and steam-air preheater are used in this paper to demonstrate by simulation that the integration of flue gas dryer and steam-air preheater results in 2.52% increase in electrical power output of a reference power plant that consumes a fuel with 52% moisture content (wet-basis) if the fuel moisture removal rate in flue gas dryer is 7140 kg/h, and the total heating surface area of steam-air preheater is 2000 m2. Citrus residue is a large-scale agro-industrial biowaste that can become a source of renewable energy through drying. Drying demands high power consumption due to the low energy efficiency of this process in the industries. In this work, the energy performance of the drying process in a semi-industrial rotary drum of 2.7 m length and 0.45 diameter was analyzed. The main objective was to find the operational condition for the lowest energy consumption and also the highest energy, drying and exergetic efficiencies. The experiments were performed under different solid mass flow rates (0.2 and 0.4 kg/min) inlet air velocities (1 and 2 m/s) and temperatures (135, 145, and 155 °C). The average energy efficiency was 13.1% with 25.1% of drying efficiency, 37291.3 kJ/kg of specific energy consumption, and 37.3% of exergy efficiency. Residential clothes drying consume about 650 TBtu of primary energy per year in the United States, equivalent to 3% of primary residential energy consumption. There is a strong impetus to reduce the energy consumption of clothes dryers by both improving existing technology and developing alternatives that use fundamentally different drying mechanisms. Clothes drying technologies are broadly classified into either evaporative or mechanical drying. The focus of this paper is on mechanical drying, including vibrational, centrifugal, and press-based methods. In this work, the physical processes involved in these mechanical fabric drying processes were analyzed to develop general theories of mechanical cloth drying energy efficiency. Quantitative evaluation of the theories requires measured fabric properties. To accomplish this, a set of experiments was conducted on samples of a standard test fabric. The fabric was a cotton-polyester blend specified by the US Department of Energy to evaluate the standardized efficiency of all residential clothes dryers in the US. Mercury porosimetry experiments were conducted to determine the fabric pore size distribution, apparent density, and porosity. Elasticity experiments were conducted to determine the fabric's Young's modulus. Isostatic press experiments were conducted to establish a relationship between compression force and fabric moisture content. The data resulting from these experiments were combined with mathematical models developed in this work to calculate the theoretical maximum performance limits for mechanical drying of the standard fabric. The results of the analysis are used to make recommendations for the most promising technologies that offer the greatest potential energy savings for residential clothes drying. In this work, the industrial case study of effluent drying with a direct and hybrid heat recovery configuration is investigated for the purpose of improving heat recovery potential and understanding the influence of various design parameters on the performance indicators in the spray drying process. Initially, data collection and performance analysis of industrial spray dryer of effluent management is performed. Then, the effect of design variables such as recirculation ratios, mass flow rate of dry hot air, water vapor, temperature of the mixing chamber, and heat input on performance parameters (thermal efficiency, energy savings, and the sustainability index) are evaluated for several configurations of the spray drying unit used in effluent management. As an outcome, substantial improvement in energy efficiency (83%) and energy-saving (26%) was achieved for a spray drying system with a 70% recirculation ratio of exhaust air for a hybrid heat recovery configuration, which is approximately 2.5% higher than the direct heat recovery configuration and it is significantly higher than that without an energy recovery system. In addition, a significant reduction in the blower power and heat input is noted in the direct and hybrid heat recovery system. The sustainability index is higher for the hybrid heat recovery configuration, indicating it being the most environment friendly configuration. Paper drying is the most energy-intensive step in papermaking and around 90% of the total amount of manufactured paper is produced in multi-cylinder dryers. A framework based on a physical model of multi-cylinder drying was developed to assess the effect of various energy-saving measures at a production site. The framework was applied to the drying section of a paper machine producing corrugated paper. The calculated steam and power savings reach up to 1.55 GJth/tpaper and 0.1 GJel/tpaper respectively, depending on the chosen combination of efficiency measures. The cumulative effect of the measures is not equal to the sum of their individual effects, which highlights the importance of accounting for interactions when considering the implementation of several measures. Although DC power is claimed to be more energy-efficient than AC power for EHD drying, experimental studies on this subject are still insufficient. This research compares the efficiency of DC versus AC (60 Hz frequency) power for EHD drying by using 1 × 1 and 2 × 2 multi-pin discharge electrodes. Energy indicators were determined from the measurements of electric power consumption at the corresponding drying rate of the wet tissue paper. The experiments revealed the key benefits of DC drying, such as enhanced drying rate, higher energy efficiency, and lower specific energy consumption. For the comparable drying flux of 0.2 g/(m2 s), the specific energy consumption of DC drying was in the range from 350 J/g (2 × 2) to 750 J/g (1 × 1) as compared with 2000 J/g (2 × 2) to 5000 J/g (1 × 1) for AC. The specific energy consumption of a 2 × 2 discharge electrode was consistently smaller than the 1 × 1 one, indicating the role of emitters spacing in the process efficiency. This work investigates the evenness of fabric drying in a household heat pump tumble dryer. The evenness of drying was defined as the standard deviation of the fraction of water, evaporated from each fabric item. Drying experiments were performed according to the IEC 61121 standard, which was also followed to determine quantities and types of cotton fabric items (towels, pillowcases and sheets) within each load. Regression analysis was performed to develop models for evenness of drying as a function of load mass and drum speed. Similarities between the tumble dryer energy efficiency parameters and the evenness of drying were analyzed. A high level of agreement was determined between responses of energy efficiency, drying time and evenness of drying to changes in drum speed. Effects of load mass were however more complex and were reflected in a non-linear response of evenness of drying to changes in load mass – the best evenness of drying could be obtained at 2 kg load, followed by 6 kg and 4 kg load. Load composition was determined as an important factor affecting the evenness of drying. At larger loads, a sheet or a pillowcase in average contributed more to the un-evenness of drying than a towel. The presence of sheets and probably the ratio of sheets to other item types in the load were determined as the most probable factors that negatively affected the evenness of drying. The current paper aims to find scientifically valid approaches to improving the environmental safety of technologies for drying grain materials and granular fertilizers. The methodology for environmental and economic efficiency justification of the energy-saving multi-stage shelf dryers with a convective fluidized bed drying provides design and operational parameters control. Meta-analysis of energy-effective and eco-friendly dryers based on the bibliometric method and the Scopus database is used for this study. The results showed that pollutants concentration in the exhausts could be controlled by modifying the design and the required number of shelves, ensuring the required material residence time to achieve the desired moisture content. The production of electricity using alternative resources like biogas and biofertilizer produced from the anaerobic digestate allows for achieving several Sustainable Development Goals simultaneously. The major limitation of the use of superheated steam spray drying (SHS-SD) for food products is the missing proof of its applicability for heat sensitive materials. A selection of food, in particular dairy products, were spray dried under superheated steam conditions in a lab scale spray dyer with an inlet steam temperature of 250 °C and outlet steam and product temperatures between 130 and 160 °C by pressure nozzle atomization. Powder attributes show that superheated steam spray drying of heat sensitive food products is technically feasible and does not necessarily result in major quality loss such as severe browning. Clay drying is one of the most important steps in the construction materials industry. Due to its high-energy requirement, clay drying is one of the most energy-consuming processes contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, motivating the search for strategies to increase the energy efficiency of the process. The process involves several operating variables whose historical records can generate a large amount of data, which can be organized and analyzed efficiently using data mining techniques (DMT). In this paper, the performance variables of a material-industry rotary dryer were identified and analyzed. A cluster analysis was performed using the Ward's classification method with 1729 operating data, identifying the kind of materials processed and the operating configurations. A linear regression model was constructed using the RRELIEFF feature selection algorithm in Orange: Data Mining Toolbox in Python. The main thermal-energy-consumption variables were the production rate, power, inlet gas temperature, and product moisture delta. These four variables represent the dryer's specific energy consumption index ( I c ) more suitably than the classic Energy Vs Production model. Yerba mate is an herbal tea produced in the central part of South America. One of the main steps of the process is drying. Among the different types of dryers which are used at present, the double pass belt conveyer dryer is the most energy efficient. The increase in wood prizes used as fuel, has generated a demand from industrial producers to improve the thermal efficiency of the process. In order to do this, a numerical model of a double deck dryer of yerba mate has been developed to study the way of improving the energy efficiency and propose modifications to the present working conditions in industry. The good of fitness of the model was determined using experimental data from two industrial dryers. The results of the model were that using hot air at 100 °C and a solid mass flow rate of 4,000 kg/h, the energy efficiency was of 40.60%. Simulating the process at different drying conditions, it was found that the energy efficiency of the dryer could be improved by recirculating 15% of the exhaust air (63.70%), or drying at 120 °C and using a higher solids mass flow rate of 6,200 kg/h with an energy efficiency of 46.21%. Pre-dried 2-phase olive pomace was dried until 8% moisture content of it by tray dryer. The effect of tray dryer's process conditions in terms of drying temperature (70–90 °C), air velocity (0.5–1.8 m/s), and sample thickness (0.5–1.5) on the quality of olive pomace and system energy efficiency were investigated. Moreover, tray dryer process parameters were optimized considering of minimum drying time, minimum quality loss of olive pomace, and maximum system energy efficiency. The present study investigates fabric motion in the drum and its effect on performance parameters of a domestic heat pump tumble dryer in several operating points, defined by different load masses and drum speeds. Fabric motion in the drum was recorded by using a high-speed camera and evaluated statistically in order to determine the relation between the fabric distribution and the dryer performance parameters. Multiple regression analysis was performed to develop models for condensate mass flow rate as a function of drum speed, load mass, and drying stage. Superheated steam is a vital drying media due to inherently passive, nonpoisonous, no fire risk, antioxidant, and compatible with food products with superb thermophysical properties than hot air. Moreover, it will improve energy efficiency by energy-saving due to reusing the energy from exhausted steam, mainly by recirculation, and the use of partial exhaust of excess steam for other operations reduces the additional energy requirement. Additionally, the specific heat at constant pressure for superheated steam is nearly double that of the hot air, reducing the quantity required for drying. Cloth drying is a major consumer of energy, and most drying is conducted by evaporative methods. The evaporative drying energy efficiency limit is commonly assumed to be 100%: one unit of latent heat removed per unit of energy expended. However, this ignores the "free drying" available from unsaturated ambient air and the possible role of heat pumping. We demonstrate that efficiency limits for evaporative drying are fundamentally related to both drying rate and ambient psychrometric conditions. A relationship among efficiency, drying rate, and ambient conditions is quantified for several evaporative drying technologies, and a comparison among evaporative technologies is provided. In addition, a comparison is provided between efficiency limits and state of the art device performance. This research will help guide future research in the most promising directions. Current clothes drying technology is an energy-intensive process that involves blowing hot air across tumbling wet fabrics to evaporate water. To address the relatively low energy efficiency of this drying technique, a new cloth drying technology was proposed in our prior study. This technology utilizes high frequency ultrasonic vibrations to extract water from a fabric in the liquid phase, resulting in a dramatical reduction in energy consumption and drying time. A piezoelectrically actuated transducer was designed and fabricated. The transducer design was based on a piezoelectric actuator that excites axisymmetric resonant modes in a thin circular metal mesh. The device was constructed by bonding a piezoelectric ring to a thin metal mesh with a hole diameter of 120 µm. Test results demonstrated that the new ultrasonic transducer efficiently dried clothes at an order of magnitude lower resonant frequency compared with the previous commercial devices, 23 kHz versus 135 kHz. Also, the power consumption per area of the new transducer was an order of magnitude less than the commercial devices. Depending on operating conditions, the device was 3–24 times more efficient compared to the commercial ultrasonic transducers utilized in our prior ultrasonic clothes drying studies. The expediency of using the heat pump (HP) as a part of the farm drying plant is considered taking drying corn grain in a batch fluidized bed (FB) as an example. Using the HP, it is possible to heat the air supplied to the dryer to a temperature about 60 °C. The refrigerant R600a (isobutаne) is selected as the working medium. According to analysis of a thermodynamic cycle of the HP, it was found that the energy conversion coefficient is equal to 2.98. The use of the HP allows saving 66% of the energy needed for corn drying. A mathematical model has been developed for the kinetic calculation of a drying plant with a batch FB for granular materials, based on the use of an analytical solution to the problem of mass conductivity and taking into account the changes in drying agent parameters over time and the bed height. Conductive hydro-drying also known as Refractance Window drying is a relatively new drying technology, which uses hot water to carry thermal energy to materials to be dehydrated. It has a high retention of heat sensitive quality parameters (vitamins, antioxidants, and color) with better energy efficiency than freeze-drying as well as many other conventional drying methods. A new ultrasound and infrared assisted conductive hydro-dryer (UIACHD) was developed to increase drying rate while reducing required hot water temperature and increasing the drying material thickness. The goal of this study was to evaluate the performance of the new dryer and to compare the performance of a pilot scale continuous UIACHD with a freeze-dryer and a cabinet dryer in drying apple slices. The physiochemical characteristics of the dried apple slices including flavonoid content, total phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, vitamin C content and color were measured. In addition, the energy consumption and energy efficiency of the dying methods were evaluated. Results showed that combining ultrasound and infrared with conductive hydro-drying can result in higher drying rates and lower product moisture content. Quality of UIACHD dried apple slices was close to the freeze-dried products and it was significantly better than the cabinet dried products. Moreover, the energy efficiency of UIACHD was considerably better than the cabinet dryer and the freeze-dryer. The results of this study showed that combining ultrasound and infrared with conductive hydro-drying can lead to an energy-efficient process with good quality retention ability. The aim of this study was to evaluate different intermittency ratios applied to a spouted bed used to dry alumina, from the energy perspective. Two types of intermittency (reduction and total interruption of the air flow) and five different intermittency profiles were evaluated, including the use of time-variant intermittency ratios. The use of intermittency provided higher energy efficiency and better use of the energy supplied, compared to the continuous process. Reductions of energy consumption in the range from 13.2% to 67.2% were obtained, relative to the continuous process. In this work, a newly designed superheated steam dryer (SSD) bearing exhaust heat recovery unit (RD) was fabricated. The dryer was designed for the superheated steam (SS) to be generated by foodstuff being dried, and the latent heat of the exhaust SS was recovered by microtube radiators and exploited to heat the RD unit. The system was then applied in Kelp drying, in which the drying kinetics was analyzed and fitted with mathematical models. The energy efficiency by the system was further evaluated and compared with hot air (HA)-drying. The results showed that the Kelp drying process in SSD could be described by two stages: heat-upstage (stage I) and superheated steam stage (stage II). While in stage I, different heat-up times of 10, 15, and 20 min were required to generate superheated steam at temperatures of 110-150°C, in stage II, the moisture content in Kelp was decreased to approximately 50 ± 5% (wet basis) within 60, 50, and 30 min at 110, 130, and 150°C, respectively. Moreover, the Midilli and Kucuk model best described Kelp drying curve in both stages, whereas the logarithmic model best fitted with that in stage II. Finally, the energy efficiency for SSD-RD was in the range of 1.127-1.425 kWh/kgwater compared with 2.406-2.508 kWh/kgwater for HA operating under the same conditions, demonstrating that the SSD-RD was able to reduce the energy input by at least 46.14%. We devised a novel methodology for optimizing cereal grain dryers grounded on the transient spatial–temporal first and second laws of thermodynamics and associated balance equations. Model equations were solved using a special time-adaptive radial basis function. Comprehensive sensitivity tests show the quantitative effects of initial moisture content, air velocity, and drying air temperature on the temporal profiles of outlet air temperature and moisture content and temporally integrated energy and exergy efficiencies. Drying temperature is the most efficacious parameter in the drying range of 50–90°C. Finally, selected examples show optimized dryer operation points under unrestrained and restrained conditions. Second law efficiency is well suited for expressing drying performance, portraying time, noble energy expenditure, and intrinsic sustainability. Three decision tables, based on simulation results, can be used to define dryer design under normal technical choice. First law efficiency and the specific moisture extraction rate are concepts more adequate for designing in-bin low-temperature dryers. The mixing of dehydrated zeolites with product particles leads to drying of the product, owing to the decrease in relative humidity of the environment and increase the temperature of the mixture, due to the release of adsorption heat. The analysis of the conventional one-stage contact drying process showed a significant mismatching in the water states of the product and the zeolite during drying. A two-stage drying process is proposed for harmonization of the water state of both product and sorbent. The significant advantage of the two-stage drying over one-stage regarding the degree of drying of the product, the utilization of the zeolite adsorption capacity and the duration of the process were experimentally confirmed. This study compares energy efficiency of a combined drying and heat treatment with that of conventional hot air heat treatment, the theoretical heat consumptions required for each treatment were determined, and the actual heat consumptions for each treatment were measured at a pilot scale. Conventional heat treatment method separately performs kiln-drying and heat treatment for wood with hot air in different equipment. On the contrary, in the combined treatment, the wood is simultaneously dried and heat-treated in the same enclosed space. Because of the time and energy savings, the economic feasibility of combined treatment is much higher than that of conventional heat treatment. Although the theoretical required energy of the combined treatment was similar to that of the two-stage method, the actual energy consumption of combined treatment was less than that of the two-stage method. And, the energy efficiency of the combined treatment was calculated to be two times higher than that of the two-stage method. From the results of this study, decreases in the processing time and energy consumption and increases in the energy efficiency of the combined treatment by superheated steam were quantitatively shown when compared to two-stage method. Agricultural driers are used for grain or maize drying with a limited annual operating time of about 100–1,000 h. To compensate the increasing costs of energy, permanent optimization of the drying process and the drying apparatus is necessary to increase energy efficiency. To attain higher energy efficiency, the drying potential of air should be fully utilized. The objective of this study is to investigate the medium flow in mixed flow dryers to identify adverse drying conditions. The investigation is based on experimental and numerical modeling and takes into account the bed motion (discrete element method) and the drying air flow (computational fluid dynamics). The results show superposition of a homogeneous air flow distribution with a particle flow profile, resulting in locally inhomogeneous residence time, different drying conditions, and ultimately uneven grain drying. Uneven drying is one of the main reasons for high energy consumption. Drying is one of the easily accessible and the most widespread processing technologies that have been used since ancient times for preserving fruits. Drying is an energy-intensive and time-consuming process, so reducing energy demand is important. The main aim of this paper is to analyze the heat and mass transfer characteristics of product in the drying chamber and in addition to this, three-dimensional (3-D) computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation was performed. The analyses of heat and mass transfer were investigated theoretically and experimentally in infrared dryer (IRD). The dryer consists of air to air heat recovery unit and proportional temperature controller. Experiments were performed at 0.5 and 0.25 m/s air velocities and at 60 and 65°C apricot surface temperatures which were controlled by three thermocouples contacted on top side of the product. In order to use energy more effectively and improve the drying characteristics of apricot, analyses were performed under different drying conditions. Since the heat recovery unit has a key role in this system, the performance of this unit was investigated and recovered energy ratio was between 58 and 62%. The calculated moisture diffusivity values varied from 1.7 × 10−10to 1.15 × 10−9for apricot, and the highest value of average energy efficiency was obtained as 16.43% at 65°C temperature and 0.25 m/s air velocity. In a number of tropical countries, the expansion of cassava processing is tied to the development of small-scale, energy-efficient pneumatic dryers used to dry flour and starch. To facilitate this development, in this study a model of the pneumatic drying of starch particles was developed, to be fitted to measurements taken from large cassava processing factories. After that, numerical simulations were performed to analyze the effects of geometry and operating conditions on the energy efficiency and pipe length required to dry the product. The results clarified the influence of processing capacity, air inlet conditions, and starch particle size, emphasizing that air velocity as well as the dilution of the starch should be minimized. One of the methods with the most potential to reduce energy consumption in grain drying is heat recovery from the dryer exhaust air. A parallel plate heat exchanger to recover heat energy from the exhaust air of a recirculating batch grain dryer was examined by theoretical assessments as well as by measurements in a scaled-down research dryer and experimental heat exchanger. In addition to the heat transfer performance, the operability in dusty conditions was investigated. Finally, the optimization of the heat exchanger was introduced by the aid of the calculation models and practical measurement. The heat exchanger performed satisfactorily, providing an average energy saving of approximately 18%. A significant improvement in the performance could be achieved by increasing the air velocity. No severe dust accumulation was observed, and a heat exchanger of this type could provide remarkable energy saving possibilities in grain drying. Superheated steam drying (SSD) of low rank coal (LRC) is applied to improve the heating value and thermal efficiency and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the danger of spontaneous combustion. It is essential to understand the fundamental aspects of drying LRC with superheated steam supported by funds in China and the development of clean coal technology. It is also important to promote the level of scientific technology relevant to safe energy strategies. The background of SSD based on China's unique energy structure and coal production situation are presented in this article. A comprehensive overview on progress and mechanisms of SSD is provided, including the status of drying technology supported by funds in China, distribution of project field and important research institutions, physical and chemical structure of water in coal, heat and mass transfer processes, mathematical models, and some results for wood, food, hot gas, etc., with particular reference to SSD in drying of LRC in China. There are still many challenges in the application of SSD of LRC in very large-scale power plants, drying equipment, and control technology. Empty fruit bunch (EFB) is one of the solid wastes from crude palm oil mills and has the lowest value for utilization compared to other solid wastes. To achieve an efficient utilization of EFB, drying is considered the first crucial process due to the high moisture content of EFB. In this study, EFB drying based on exergy recovery is proposed to achieve high energy efficiency. A fluidized bed is adopted as the main dryer. The proposed model is evaluated in terms of energy efficiency, especially regarding the influence of target moisture content and fluidization velocity. Up to 92% of the energy involved in the drying process can be recirculated. The total energy consumption for drying decreases as the target moisture content decreases, though there is no significant impact of fluidization velocity to total energy consumption. In addition, the required total length of the heat transfer tubes immersed inside the fluidized bed dryer is calculated because it relates to fluidization performance and economic issues. Drying of wood chips at a power plant site increases the lower heating value and decreases composting and dry matter losses in long-term storage. In this study, experimentally measured drying curves for wood chips are produced to study the drying kinetics of the chips. Drying curves have been used to assess whether or not wood chip drying in a batch-type fixed bed dryer at a municipal Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant site is profitable when using external excess heat or solar energy as a heat source in drying, and what could be the reasonable drying parameters for that. The curves have been determined by changing bed heights (100, 300, 500 mm), temperature of inlet air (30, 50, 70, 90°C) and air velocities (0.3 m/s, 0.5 m/s, 0.7 m/s) in the tests. Air has been used as a drying gas. The results show that drying time decreases considerably when the temperature of the drying air increases from 50°C to 70°C. The influence of drying air temperature on the drying time is no longer so remarkable as the temperature increases from 70°C to 90°C. This indicates that the inlet air temperature should be at least 70°C. The results also indicate that the air velocity should be at least 0.5 m/s in order to achieve reasonable drying times. The economics of drying have been evaluated in the study by calculating the payback period for the dryer. According to the results, drying could be profitable if investment costs are appropriate (not much higher than 1,500 €/m2) and the price of the wood chips is sufficiently high (higher than ∼15–20 €/MWh). Vapor recompression is considered a highly energy-efficient technology to recover the heat involved in a process. Unfortunately, in conventional vapor recompression technology, not all of the heat can be recovered effectively. In this study, an enhanced vapor recompression technology enabling more effective heat recovery is proposed, and its ability to dry low rank coal (LRC) is evaluated. We consider the factors of exergy recovery and heat coupling. In addition to conventional vapor recompression, enhanced vapor recompression technology used to dry LRC can recover effectively the sensible heat of dried solid LRC through water recirculation. Moreover, we show that there is an optimum amount of recirculated water for each initial and target moisture content. A temperature–enthalpy diagram reveals that the proposed enhanced vapor recompression technology shows effective heat coupling for each type of heat, which results in less exergy loss so that a marked reduction in energy consumption can be achieved. This work presents an approach to compute dryer energy efficiency using air flowrate step responses and establish a link between drying energy efficiency and process controllability. The approach is based on the temperature drop between the dryer inlet and outlet air under adiabatic conditions and so decouples water evaporation from heat loss and product heating effects on dryer temperature drop. As such, the computation is accurate even for dryers with significant heat losses where the traditional use of actual temperature drop measurements is grossly inaccurate. The use of wood fuel pellets has increased worldwide in recent years, and pellet producers conclude that the lack of drying capacity is a barrier to increased production. In this study, we develop a concept of two different dryers called thetwo-step drying technique. The aim is to show the potential for increasing the drying capacity and improving energy efficiency when introducing a second dryer into the pellet plant. An energy analysis of drying of biomaterials (tea leaves) was conducted on a combined unsymmetrical double-feed microwave and vacuum system (CUMV) to optimize the operating conditions and quality of the products. Tea leaves were dried from an initial moisture content of 172 to 7% (db). An energy consumption model based on the first law of thermodynamics was developed to evaluate energy efficiency. The influences of microwave power, vacuum pressure, and microwave operation modes on energy consumption were investigated in detail. The results showed that energy consumption as well as energy efficiency were strongly dependent on vacuum pressure and microwave power. Energy consumption and color parameters of the tea leaves were compared at different drying conditions. In particular, the experiments were carried out at different microwave powers (800 and 1,600 W) at a frequency of 2,450 MHz and different vacuum pressures (535 and 385 torr) to investigate the effects of these factors on the microwave–vacuum drying. The aim of this study was to investigate the drying kinetics and energy efficiency of a combined microwave/rotating pulsed fluidized bed (MW/RPFB) dryer to dry particles of poly-hydroxybutirate (PHB). In order to analyze the effects of microwaves and hot air conditions on the drying kinetics of PHB and energy efficiency, an experimental design technique was applied. As a first objective, this study addresses a novel approach to drying efficiency analysis through transient models based on both the first and second laws of thermodynamics. As a second objective, we developed a numerical meshless scheme based on cubic radial basis functions to solve the associated nonlinear coupled advection-dominated set of partial differential equations. Following background information on energy efficiency measures, this paper presents the methodology and calculation results for energy performance of several industrial dryers quantified in terms of the specific energy consumption and compared to the results obtained from the Baker and McKenzie's adiabatic dryer model for convective dryers. This article reports the results of an exploratory study designed to reduce heat and electricity consumption in industrial drying of radiata pine. The experiments were performed with slight modifications of the standard drying schedules used by the sawmill to dry radiata pine in 100-m3 industrial kilns. The heat and electricity consumption were determined with data collected during the drying runs and calculations based on mathematical models. Despite being geographically dispersed, abundant, and accounting for almost half of the world's coal reserves, low-rank coals (LRCs) find limited use due to their high moisture content and high propensity for spontaneous combustion. Reducing the moisture content of low-rank coal enhances its heating value and reduces transportation costs, thus increasing its economic value. In addition, dried low-rank coals have been proven to improve plant efficiency, enhance safety, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Although numerous technologies for coal drying already exist, it is often challenging, if not impossible, to find one that is cost-effective in all aspects. When selecting a dryer for coal upgrading applications, factors such as particle size/size distribution, throughput, energy consumption, material handling capabilities, safety, carbon footprint, capital and operating costs, return on investment, etc., are important considerations. This article provides an overview of the patent literature along with the archival literature that deals with drying of coal as well as biomass, which is relevant to coal drying. Thermal dehydration is the most common and cost-effective technique for preservation of foods and for the production of traditional as well as innovative processed products such as snacks with desired functionalities. The basic intent of this article is to provide a global overview of emerging and innovative thermal drying technologies that are already commercialized or show potential of industrial exploitation upon successful R&D to sort out some limitations. New drying technologies are needed to enhance quality, reduce energy consumption, improve safety, and reduce environmental impact. Mathematical modeling can be used for cost-effective development of untested novel designs to reduce the cost and time required for innovation. As examples of emerging drying technologies we consider selected dehydration techniques with imminent commercialization potential. These include heat pump-assisted drying, microwave-assisted drying, low-pressure superheated steam drying, pulse combustion spray drying, pulsed and ultrasound-assisted osmotic dehydration, as well as novel gas-particle contactors such as impinging streams and pulsed fluidized beds. Multistage drying, intermittent drying, and the use of hybrid drying technologies-which combine advantages of different dryers without some of their limitations-will be outlined. This article also discusses various methods of energy minimization, and the potential for use of renewable energy will also be discussed briefly. Low-rank coals (LRCs) constitute about 45% of the total coal reserves and hence will soon be the fossil fuel of choice in many countries despite their high moisture content on mining, which varies from 30% to as high as 66%. It is important to reduce their water content to enhance the heating value and reduce transportation costs while enhancing combustion efficiency, safety, and reduction of emissions on combustion. The level of moisture to be achieved upon drying LRCs depends on the end application; it varies from as low as 0% for hydrogenation processes to 15% for briquetting and gasification processes. Numerous drying technologies have been proposed for drying coal; they include pulse combustion, vacuum, fluid bed, rotary, flash, microwave, and superheated steam drying. Each technology has some pros and cons, which are not always clearly spelled out in the literature. In addition, it is necessary to develop sustainable rather than just cost-effective drying systems for LRC. In this article we assess various coal drying techniques critically and identify their strengths and weaknesses. Some theoretical comparisons of different dryer types are carried out based on energy utilization and carbon footprints. This article presents a case study of Simprosys applied to the energy efficiency evaluation of an exisisting fiberboard drying production line. An energy examination of the dryer and the drying system under current operating conditions was performed using Simprosys 2.1 (Simprotek, Cupertino, CA). Spray drying is an alternative method to freeze drying of Bifidobacterium bifidum biomass during the production of solid dosage forms. In order to develop a new drying process for probiotics and to establish the generalized mathematical model for the proposed technology, both experimental and theoretical studies on B. bifidum biosuspension have been carried out. These studies focused on drying kinetics, kinetics of cell death due to thermal shock and growth of osmotic pressure; on defining the influence of process parameters on product quality; and on identifying the limitations of process parameters due to material characteristics. Multistage adsorption drying with zeolite is experimentally evaluated for a single- and a two-stage dryer. For a 1:1 ratio between air flows for drying and regeneration, the energy efficiency for a single-stage system 50-54% and for the two-stage system 63%. Calculations with a calibrated model show that the two-stage system achieves a 4:1 ratio between the air flows an efficiency of 85%, 12% above that of a single-stage system. A sensitivity analysis shows the influence of operational conditions on the energy efficiency. This research aims at modeling the rotary drying of carton packaging waste and analyzing the energy performance of the process. Drying data were obtained in a semi-pilot rotary dryer, 0.45 m diameter and 2.7 m rotating drum long, operating with an air velocity of 1 m/s and air inlet temperature of 90°C and 10 rpm. Under the operating conditions employed, the analysis of the data showed that the energy performance of the drying process increased from 5 to 75% as the inlet wet solid feed rate increased from 1.8 to 19 kg/h. In addition, at this latter wet-solid feed rate, the reduction of the air velocity in the dryer to 0.8 m/s also led to an increase in the performance of drying process from 80 to 94%.
