The effects of 2-week treatment with 20mg tenoxicam once daily, and 50mg diclofenac twice daily, in comparison with placebo, were investigated in 30 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Treatment efficacy was assessed by standard clinical parameters and by continuous actigraphic recordings of wrist movements.

Data from patients treated with tenoxicam, a new nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), have been collected from patients during the first 2 years of marketing. These data, from 250 million patient-days of tenoxicam use, have confirmed that the efficacy and safety of the drug compares favourably with that shown by other well established NSAIDs in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, Osteoarthritis, ankylosing Spondylitis, gout and soft tissue injury/extra-articular inflammatory disease. The once-daily dose of 20mg established in clinical trials has been shown to control pain and inflammation in short term usage as well as in the long term treatment of chronic rheumatic disorders. Several studies in elderly patients have shown that tenoxicam can be safely given at this dose for a longer period of time to patients with mild or moderate renal impairment and that a higher frequency of adverse events is not seen in the elderly patient population.

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of tenoxicam, a multicentre prospective trial was conducted by 1102 physicians in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Panama and the Republic of Dominica. The approved indications in this trial included Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other rheumatic conditions. The patients received tenoxicam 20 mg/day for 2 to 4 weeks.

19 men and 61 women with degenerative arthritis of the knee joint were randomly allocated to receive tenoxicam 20mg (n = 40) or piroxicam 20mg (n = 40) orally before breakfast once daily, for 6 weeks. Tenoxicam was significantly better tolerated than piroxicam with 0 and 4 patients, respectively, failing to complete the study because of adverse effects. In addition, the incidence of adverse effects was significantly greater in piroxicam compared with tenoxicam recipients (table II).
