Issued in 2001, the new school curriculum and its strong cultural emphasis has motivated the stakeholders in Québec to insist on a cultural strengthening of the curriculum in schools, namely for the teachable subjects (Québec. Ministère de l'Éducation, 1997a and b). The foundations of the Québec Education Program (Québec. Ministère de l'Éducation, 2001b) strive for a cultural grounding of learning activities by the student in order to broaden his vision of the world, to build his identity and to develop his capacity for action. With this perspective in mind, we examined the classic books for young readers in order to develop a collective appreciation of a literary work and to construct a common culture amongst the students of the second primary cycle. Collective reading is a learning activity that can be used in public and school libraries, along with certain formative evaluation tools used in the classroom, in order to assess the critical appreciation of young readers.
