The article discusses Shared Space, a team of urban planners that believe that traffic signs are largely unnecessary. The team is operating on the zoological concept of risk compensation effect. The concept is that animals tend to adjust their behavior when risk is perceived. Traffic signs lend to a false sense of security. Several cities are experimenting with reduced signage.
