Identifying patients with left ventricular ejection fraction (EF), either reduced [EF < 40% (rEF)], mid-range [EF 40–50% (mEF)], or preserved [EF > 50% (pEF)], is considered of primary clinical importance. An end-to-end video classification using AutoML in Google Vertex AI was applied to echocardiographic recordings. Datasets balanced by majority undersampling, each corresponding to one out of three possible classifications, were obtained from the Standford EchoNet-Dynamic repository. A train–test split of 75/25 was applied. A binary video classification of rEF vs. not rEF demonstrated good performance (test dataset: ROC AUC score 0.939, accuracy 0.863, sensitivity 0.894, specificity 0.831, positive predicting value 0.842). A second binary classification of not pEF vs. pEF was slightly less performing (test dataset: ROC AUC score 0.917, accuracy 0.829, sensitivity 0.761, specificity 0.891, positive predicting value 0.888). A ternary classification was also explored, and lower performance was observed, mainly for the mEF class. A non-AutoML PyTorch implementation in open access confirmed the feasibility of our approach. With this proof of concept, end-to-end video classification based on transfer learning to categorize EF merits consideration for further evaluation in prospective clinical studies. Metabolic syndrome is experiencing a concerning and escalating rise in prevalence today. The link between metabolic syndrome and periodontal disease is a highly relevant area of research. Some studies have suggested a bidirectional relationship between metabolic syndrome and periodontal disease, where one condition may exacerbate the other. Furthermore, the existence of periodontal disease among these individuals significantly impacts overall health management. This research focuses on the relationship between periodontal disease and metabolic syndrome, while also incorporating data on general health status and overall well-being. We aimed to develop advanced machine learning models that efficiently identify key predictors of metabolic syndrome, a significant emphasis being placed on thoroughly explaining the predictions generated by the models. We studied a group of 296 patients, hospitalized in SCJU Sibiu, aged between 45–79 years, of which 57% had metabolic syndrome. The patients underwent dental consultations and subsequently responded to a dedicated questionnaire, along with a standard EuroQol 5-Dimensions 5-Levels (EQ-5D-5L) questionnaire. The following data were recorded: DMFT (Decayed, Missing due to caries, and Filled Teeth), CPI (Community Periodontal Index), periodontal pockets depth, loss of epithelial insertion, bleeding after probing, frequency of tooth brushing, regular dental control, cardiovascular risk, carotid atherosclerosis, and EQ-5D-5L score. We used Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) frameworks to build predictive models in order to determine which of these risk factors exhibits the most robust association with metabolic syndrome. To gain confidence in the results provided by the machine learning models provided by the AutoML pipelines, we used SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values for the interpretability of these models, from a global and local perspective. The obtained results confirm that the severity of periodontal disease, high cardiovascular risk, and low EQ-5D-5L score have the greatest impact in the occurrence of metabolic syndrome. Our aim is to investigate the added value of automated machine learning (AutoML) for potential future applications in cancer diagnostics. Using two important diagnostic questions, the non-invasive determination of IDH mutation status and ATRX status, we analyze whether it is possible to use AutoML to develop models that are comparable in performance to conventional machine learning models (ML) developed by experts. For this purpose, we develop AutoML models using different feature preselection methods and compare the results with previously developed conventional ML models. The cohort used for our study comprises T2-weighted MRI images of 124 patients with histologically confirmed gliomas. Using AutoML, we were able to develop sophisticated models in a very short time with only a few lines of computer code. In predicting IDH mutation status, we obtained a mean AUC of 0.7400 and a mean AUPRC of 0.8582. ATRX mutation status was predicted with very similar discriminatory power, with a mean AUC of 0.7810 and a mean AUPRC of 0.8511. In both cases, AutoML was even able to achieve a discriminatory power slightly above that of the respective conventionally developed models in a very short computing time, thus making such methods accessible to non-experts in the near future. Radiomics is the process of extracting useful quantitative features of high-dimensional data that allows for automated disease classification, including atherosclerotic disease. Hence, this study aimed to quantify and extract the radiomic features from Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography (CCTA) images and to evaluate the performance of automated machine learning (AutoML) model in classifying the atherosclerotic plaques. In total, 202 patients who underwent CCTA examination at Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) between September 2020 and May 2021 were selected as they met the inclusion criteria. Three primary coronary arteries were segmented on axial sectional images, yielding a total of 606 volume of interest (VOI). Subsequently, the first order, second order, and shape order of radiomic characteristics were extracted for each VOI. Model 1, Model 2, Model 3, and Model 4 were constructed using AutoML-based Tree-Pipeline Optimization Tools (TPOT). The heatmap confusion matrix, recall (sensitivity), precision (PPV), F1 score, accuracy, receiver operating characteristic (ROC), and area under the curve (AUC) were analysed. Notably, Model 1 with the first-order features showed superior performance in classifying the normal coronary arteries (F1 score: 0.88; Inverse F1 score: 0.94), as well as in classifying the calcified (F1 score: 0.78; Inverse F1 score: 0.91) and mixed plaques (F1 score: 0.76; Inverse F1 score: 0.86). Moreover, Model 2 consisting of second-order features was proved useful, specifically in classifying the non-calcified plaques (F1 score: 0.63; Inverse F1 score: 0.92) which are a key point for prediction of cardiac events. Nevertheless, Model 3 comprising the shape-based features did not contribute to the classification of atherosclerotic plaques. Overall, TPOT shown promising capabilities in terms of finding the best pipeline and tailoring the model using CCTA-based radiomic datasets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
