Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the neural, behavioral, and physiological systems of the brain. This disease is also known as tremor. The common symptoms of this disease are a slowness of movement known as 'bradykinesia', loss of automatic movements, speech/writing changes, and difficulty with walking at early stages. To solve these issues and to enhance the diagnostic process of PD, machine learning (ML) algorithms have been implemented for the categorization of subjective disease and healthy controls (HC) with comparable medical appearances. To provide a far-reaching outline of data modalities and artificial intelligence techniques that have been utilized in the analysis and diagnosis of PD, we conducted a literature analysis of research papers published up until 2022. A total of 112 research papers were included in this study, with an examination of their targets, data sources and different types of datasets, ML algorithms, and associated outcomes. The results showed that ML approaches and new biomarkers have a lot of promise for being used in clinical decision-making, resulting in a more systematic and informed diagnosis of PD. Pterygium is an eye condition that causes the fibrovascular tissues to grow towards the corneal region. At the early stage, it is not a harmful condition, except for slight discomfort for the patients. However, it will start to affect the eyesight of the patient once the tissues encroach towards the corneal region, with a more serious impact if it has grown into the pupil region. Therefore, this condition needs to be identified as early as possible to halt its growth, with the use of simple eye drops and sunglasses. One of the associated risk factors for this condition is a low educational level, which explains the reason that the majority of the patients are not aware of this condition. Hence, it is important to develop an automated pterygium screening system based on simple imaging modalities such as a mobile phone camera so that it can be assessed by many people. During the early stage of automated pterygium screening system development, conventional machine learning techniques such as support vector machines and artificial neural networks are the de facto algorithms to detect the presence of pterygium tissues. However, with the arrival of the deep learning era, coupled with the availability of large training data, deep learning networks have replaced the conventional networks in screening for the pterygium condition. The deep learning networks have been successfully implemented for three major purposes, which are to classify an image regarding whether there is the presence of pterygium tissues or not, to localize the lesion tissues through object detection methodology, and to semantically segment the lesion tissues at the pixel level. This review paper summarizes the type, severity, risk factors, and existing state-of-the-art technology in automated pterygium screening systems. A few available datasets are also discussed in this paper for both classification and segmentation tasks. In conclusion, a computer-assisted pterygium screening system will benefit many people all over the world, especially in alerting them to the possibility of having this condition so that preventive actions can be advised at an early stage. White blood cells (WBCs) constitute an essential part of the human immune system. The correct identification of WBC subtypes is critical in the diagnosis of leukemia, a kind of blood cancer defined by the aberrant proliferation of malignant leukocytes in the bone marrow. The traditional approach of classifying WBCs, which involves the visual analysis of blood smear images, is labor-intensive and error-prone. Modern approaches based on deep convolutional neural networks provide significant results for this type of image categorization, but have high processing and implementation costs owing to very large feature sets. This paper presents an improved hybrid approach for efficient WBC subtype classification. First, optimum deep features are extracted from enhanced and segmented WBC images using transfer learning on pre-trained deep neural networks, i.e., DenseNet201 and Darknet53. The serially fused feature vector is then filtered using an entropy-controlled marine predator algorithm (ECMPA). This nature-inspired meta-heuristic optimization algorithm selects the most dominant features while discarding the weak ones. The reduced feature vector is classified with multiple baseline classifiers with various kernel settings. The proposed methodology is validated on a public dataset of 5000 synthetic images that correspond to five different subtypes of WBCs. The system achieves an overall average accuracy of 99.9 % with more than 95 % reduction in the size of the feature vector. The feature selection algorithm also demonstrates better convergence performance as compared to classical meta-heuristic algorithms. The diagnosis of severe COVID-19 lung infection is important because it carries a higher risk for the patient and requires prompt treatment with oxygen therapy and hospitalization while those with less severe lung infection often stay on observation. Also, severe infections are more likely to have long-standing residual changes in their lungs and may need follow-up imaging. We have developed deep learning neural network models for classifying severe vs. non-severe lung infections in COVID-19 patients on chest radiographs (CXR). A deep learning U-Net model was developed to segment the lungs. Inception-v1 and Inception-v4 models were trained for the classification of severe vs. non-severe COVID-19 infection. Four CXR datasets from multi-country and multi-institutional sources were used to develop and evaluate the models. The combined dataset consisted of 5748 cases and 6193 CXR images with physicians' severity ratings as reference standard. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to evaluate model performance. We studied the reproducibility of classification performance using the different combinations of training and validation data sets. We also evaluated the generalizability of the trained deep learning models using both independent internal and external test sets. The Inception-v1 based models achieved AUC ranging between 0.81 ± 0.02 and 0.84 ± 0.0, while the Inception-v4 models achieved AUC in the range of 0.85 ± 0.06 and 0.89 ± 0.01, on the independent test sets, respectively. Skin cancer poses a significant healthcare challenge, requiring precise and prompt diagnosis for effective treatment. While recent advances in deep learning have dramatically improved medical image analysis, including skin cancer classification, ensemble methods offer a pathway for further enhancing diagnostic accuracy. This study introduces a cutting-edge approach employing the Max Voting Ensemble Technique for robust skin cancer classification on ISIC 2018: Task 1-2 dataset. We incorporate a range of cutting-edge, pre-trained deep neural networks, including MobileNetV2, AlexNet, VGG16, ResNet50, DenseNet201, DenseNet121, InceptionV3, ResNet50V2, InceptionResNetV2, and Xception. These models have been extensively trained on skin cancer datasets, achieving individual accuracies ranging from 77.20% to 91.90%. Our method leverages the synergistic capabilities of these models by combining their complementary features to elevate classification performance further. In our approach, input images undergo preprocessing for model compatibility. The ensemble integrates the pre-trained models with their architectures and weights preserved. For each skin lesion image under examination, every model produces a prediction. These are subsequently aggregated using the max voting ensemble technique to yield the final classification, with the majority-voted class serving as the conclusive prediction. Through comprehensive testing on a diverse dataset, our ensemble outperformed individual models, attaining an accuracy of 93.18% and an AUC score of 0.9320, thus demonstrating superior diagnostic reliability and accuracy. We evaluated the effectiveness of our proposed method on the HAM10000 dataset to ensure its generalizability. Our ensemble method delivers a robust, reliable, and effective tool for the classification of skin cancer. By utilizing the power of advanced deep neural networks, we aim to assist healthcare professionals in achieving timely and accurate diagnoses, ultimately reducing mortality rates and enhancing patient outcomes. This study proposes a Computer-Aided Diagnostic (CAD) system to diagnose subjects with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The CAD system identifies morphological anomalies within the brain regions of ASD subjects. Cortical features are scored according to their contribution in diagnosing a subject to be ASD or typically developed (TD) based on a trained machine-learning (ML) model. This approach opens the hope for developing a new CAD system for early personalized diagnosis of ASD. We propose a framework to extract the cerebral cortex from structural MRI as well as identifying the altered areas in the cerebral cortex. This framework consists of the following five main steps: (i) extraction of cerebral cortex from structural MRI; (ii) cortical parcellation to a standard atlas; (iii) identifying ASD associated cortical markers; (iv) adjusting feature values according to sex and age; (v) building tailored neuro-atlases to identify ASD; and (vi) artificial neural networks (NN) are trained to classify ASD. The system is tested on the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE I) sites achieving an average balanced accuracy score of 97 ± 2 % . This paper demonstrates the ability to develop an objective CAD system using structure MRI and tailored neuro-atlases describing specific developmental patterns of the brain in autism. Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely used in various medical imaging tasks. However, due to the intrinsic locality of convolution operations, CNNs generally cannot model long-range dependencies well, which are important for accurately identifying or mapping corresponding breast lesion features computed from unregistered multiple mammograms. This motivated us to leverage the architecture of Multi-view Vision Transformers to capture long-range relationships of multiple mammograms from the same patient in one examination. For this purpose, we employed local transformer blocks to separately learn patch relationships within four mammograms acquired from two-view (CC/MLO) of two-side (right/left) breasts. The outputs from different views and sides were concatenated and fed into global transformer blocks, to jointly learn patch relationships between four images representing two different views of the left and right breasts. To evaluate the proposed model, we retrospectively assembled a dataset involving 949 sets of mammograms, which included 470 malignant cases and 479 normal or benign cases. We trained and evaluated the model using a five-fold cross-validation method. Without any arduous preprocessing steps (e.g., optimal window cropping, chest wall or pectoral muscle removal, two-view image registration, etc.), our four-image (two-view-two-side) transformer-based model achieves case classification performance with an area under ROC curve (AUC = 0.818 ± 0.039), which significantly outperforms AUC = 0.784 ± 0.016 achieved by the state-of-the-art multi-view CNNs (p = 0.009). It also outperforms two one-view-two-side models that achieve AUC of 0.724 ± 0.013 (CC view) and 0.769 ± 0.036 (MLO view), respectively.
