An investigation was carried out to study lichen flora of National Botanical Garden, Dhaka, during the tenure of May 2018 to April 2019. Seven genera of lichens namely Chrysothrix, Cladonia, Cryptothecia, Herpothallon, Parmelia, Pertusaria and Usnea were recorded from 15 blocks of the Garden. Lichens were abundantly grown and their number increased from June to October, whereas from November to April the number of lichens gradually decreased. The maximum frequency percentage (36.52) of the association found in Parmelia while minimum frequency percentage was recorded 2.48 in Usnea. Among three different heights, the highest number of lichens was recorded within 2 to 4 feet. Most exclusively, Parmelia was found in all the studied blocks, whereas other identified lichens were observed randomly. Chrysanthemum morifolium is one of the most famous cut flowers with a high ornamental value, occupying an irreplaceable position in international flower commerce. But most frequently occurred fungal diseases limit the production of this ornamental plant. A total of five fungicides viz., CM-75 WP, Dithane M 45, Ridomil Gold MZ 68 WG, Rovral 50 WP and Score 250 EC were selected to evaluate in vitro efficacy at 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ppm concentrations against two pathogenic fungi of Chrysanthemum morifolium namely, Curvularia lunata and Fusarium moniliforme. Rovral 50 WP showed complete growth inhibition of C. lunata and CM 75 WP showed complete growth inhibition of F. moniliforme at all concentrations used. Five plant extracts viz., Azadirachta indica, Citrus limon, Datura metel, Psidium guajava and Vitex negundo were selected to evaluate in vitro efficacy at 5, 10, 15 and 20% concentrations against the test pathogens. Out of the five plant extracts, A. indica showed complete growth inhibition of C. lunata at 15 and 20% concentrations. A pot experiment was conducted with the single and combined doses of fungicides, plant extracts and antagonist for the management of nine rice pathogens. A total of 13 treatments including controls with or without inocula of the pathogen were tested. Amongst all the treatments only T6 (Bavistin + Azadirachta indica + Trichoderma harzianum) showed highest percentage of seed germination and seedling vigor index of seeds inoculated with Alternaria alternata , Aspergillus flavus, Curvularia lunata and Pestalotiopsis guepinii. Next to T6, T10 (Bavistin + Tall + Azadirachta indica + Citrus medica) showed promising result against Drechslera oryzae, Fusarium moniliforme, Microdochium oryzae and Sarocladium oryzae. T3 treatment (Azadirachta indica) showed highest percentage of seed germination and seedling vigor index in case of seeds inoculated with Fusarium solani. Amongst all treatments the integrated use of Bavistin, A. indica and T. harzianum showed the better performance for growth reduction of test pathogens and increased germination of seeds. Dhaka Univ. Mycology and Plant Pathology Laboratory, Department of Botany, University of Dhaka, Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh Pyricularia oryzae pathotype Triticum, causal agent of wheat blast, has emerged in Bangladesh as a serious threat for wheat production. Virulence analysis of plant pathogen can reveal the pathogenic nature of that pathogen. In the present study, twenty-four monoconidial isolates of P. oryzae from Chuadanga, Meherpur, Kustia and Jhenaidaha districts of Bangladesh were analyzed to observe their pathogenic potential. Based on the disease reactions, all the isolates were grouped into 3 pathotypes. Present investigation revealed that the isolates with high virulence were prevalent in the studied P. oryzae population. An attempt was undertaken to detect the soil fungi and diversity of Trichoderma spp in the rhizosphere soil of selected vegetable crops. A total of fifteen fungi viz., Alternaria sp., Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, A. ochraceus, Aspergillus sp., Colletotrichum sp., Curvularia sp., Fusarium sp., Mucor sp., Penicillium sp., Rhizoctonia solani, Rhizopus sp., Trichoderma sp. and Syncephalastrum sp. were isolated from rhizospheric soil of brinjal, chili, cucumber, cabbage and onion in Naogaon district. Except Syncephalastrum sp., all the above mentioned fungi including Monilia sp., were isolated from rhizospheric soil of brinjal, cabbage, chili and tomato of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur. A total of eight types of Trichoderma spp belonging to four species viz., Trichoderma harzianum, T. koningii, T. reesei and T. viride were isolated from nine vegetable fields from Naogaon district and BARI. Two major species of Indian spinach, namely Basella alba L. and B. rubra L. were selected to find out associated mycoflora and their pathogenic potentiality. Ten fungi viz., Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, Colletotrichum dematium, C. lindemuthianum, Curvularia lunata, Drechslera sacchari, Fusarium semitectum and Penicillium sp. were found to be associated with the selected leaves of Basella spp. Among the isolated fungi C. lindemuthianum, D. sacchari and F. semitectum were found to be pathogenic to Basella spp. Association of C. lindemuthianum and D. sacchari with Basella spp. are recorded first time from Bangladesh. Seed samples with highest (CB10), lowest (CB8), moderate fungal frequency (CB3) and randomly selected seeds from all varieties (CB1-14) were used. A total of 14 species of fungi, namely Aspergillus flavus Link, A. fumigatus Fresenius, A. niger Van Tiegh, Curvularia lunata (Wakker) Boedijn, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz & Sacc, Fusarium nivale (Fr.) Sorauer, F. oxysporum Schlechtendal, F. fujikuroi Nirenberg, Penicillium aculeatum Raper & Fennell, Penicillium citrinum Thom, Rhizoctonia solani Khun., Rhizopus stolonifer (Ehrenb.) Vuill., Syncephalastrum racemosum Cohn and Trichoderma viride Pers. were found to be associated with seed parts of different varieties of cotton. The maximum ten species of fungi were isolated from seed coat. The most prevalent fungus was Rhizopus stolonifer which was found in all the parts of all the varieties of cotton seeds examined. Out of the 14 isolated fungi, Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, C. lunata, C. gloeosporioides, F. nivale, F. oxysporum, F. fujikuroi, Penicillium aculeatum, R. solani, R. stolonifer, S. racemosum and T. viride were found to be external and Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, C. lunata, F. nivale, Penicillium citrinum and R. stolonifer were internal seed borne fungi. Three antagonistic fungi were isolated from the field soil of blight infected Tagetes spp. by serial dilution method. The fungi were identified as Aspergillus flavus Link, A. niger van Tiegh. and Trichoderma viride Pers. Antagonistic potentiality of aforesaid fungi were evaluated against the pathogenic fungi of Tageteserecta L. and T. patula L. following "dual culture colony interaction" and volatile and nonvolatile metabolites. The pathogenic fungi were A. alternata, Aspergillus fumigatus and Curvularia lunata. In dual culture colony interaction, out of three soil fungi, T. viride showed the highest growth inhibition on A. alternata (71.03%), A. fumigatus (38.49%) and C. lunata (60.71%). The maximum inhibition of radial growth of A. alternata (74.55%) was observed with the culture filtrates of T. viride owing to volatile metabolites. The maximum inhibition of radial growth of A. fumigatus (37.43%) was observed with the culture filtrates of A. flavus owing to volatile metabolites. The complete inhibition of radial growth of C. lunata was observed with the culture filtrates of A. niger owing to volatile metabolites. The complete inhibition of radial growth of A. alternata was observed with nonvolatile metabolites of A. nigera and T. viride at all concentrations. The complete inhibition of radial growth of A. fumigatus was also observed with nonvolatile metabolites of A. niger at all concentrations. Twenty five fungal species, representing 13 genera were found to be associated with seeds of 20 varieties of rice (BRRI dhan 56 to BRRI dhan 75). Fungi were isolated following "Tissue planting" method and "Blotter method". A total of 24 species of fungi, namely Aspergillus flavus Link, A. fumigatus Fresenius, A. niger (Type 1 and Type 2) Van Tiegh, A. ochraceus K. Wilhelm, A. nidulans Eidam, Aspergillus sp.1, Aspergillus sp.2, Aspergillus sp.3, Curvularia lunata (Wakker) Boedijn, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz & Sacc, C. gossypii Southw., Chaetomium globosum Kunze., Fusarium nivale (Fr.) Sorauer, F. moniliforme J. Shelden, F. oxysporum Schlechtendal, F. fujikuroi Nirenberg, Mucor sp. P. Micheli ex L., Penicillium sp.1 and sp.2 Link, Rhizoctonia solani Khun., Rhizopus stolonifer (Ehrenb.) Vuill., Rhizomucor sp. Lucet & Costantin, Syncephalastrum racemosum Cohn and Trichoderma viride Pers. were found to be associated with the seeds of 14 varieties (CB 1- CB 14) of cotton. Out of these 24 fungal species, nine were found to be pathogenic to cotton. They were Aspergillus flavus, A. niger (Type 1), Aspergillus sp. 1, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium nivale, F. moniliforme, Mucor sp. and Rhizoctonia solani. These pathogenic fungi had remarkable effect on seed germination, vigor index, root-shoot length and mortality of cotton seedlings. The germination percentage of control seeds was 88 but because of the presence of pathogenic fungi the rate showed considerable reduction in all the varieties and it varied from 20 to 82%. Among the nine fungal isolates Rhizoctonia solani showed maximum reduction in seed germination. Aspergillus flavus, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Fusarium moniliforme also caused near about 50% reduction in seed germination. Mortality percentage of control seedling were also less (6) whereas, in inoculated seeds it was higher and varied from 7 - 23%. Root- shoot ratio of control seedlings was high but less in inoculated seedlings. The vigor index of control plant was high (1548.8) but less in inoculated plants. The lowest vigor index was noticed for Rhizoctonia solani (202.0) and highest for Aspergillus sp. 1(1213.6). Results indicated that Curvularia lunata and Rhizoctonia solani showed a greater impact in reduction of cotton seed germination and vigor index. Dhaka Univ. J. Biol. Four antagonistic fungi Aspergillus flavus Link, A. fumigatus Fresenius, A. niger van Tiegh. and Trichoderma viride Pers. were isolated from field soil of Rauwolfia serpentina by serial dilution method and selected to evaluate their antagonistic potentiality against Colletotrichum gloeosporiodes (Penz.) Sacc, the causal agent of anthracnose of Rauwolfia serpentina (L.) Benth. ex Kurz following dual culture colony interaction, volatile and non-volatile metabolites. In dual culture method Trichoderma viride showed maximum (84.28%) inhibition of test fungi followed by Aspergillus niger (77.39%), A. fumigatus (43.71%) and A. flavus (29.32%). Volatile metabolites of T. viride showed higher (77.64%) inhibition of test fungi followed by A. flavus (75.58%), A. fumigatus (60.88%) and A. niger (58.23%). Non-volatile metabolites of antagonistic fungi showed that A. flavus showed (94.42%) inhibition of test fungus followed by T. viride (90.90%), A. niger (86.13%) and A. fumigatus (73.73%). Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc.) Shoemaker is a phytopathogenic fungus, causal agent of leaf blight disease of wheat. This fungus is difficult to control because of its immense cultural, morphological, physiological, pathogenic and genetic variability. The aim of this investigation was to study the cultural variability of the selected isolates of B. sorokiniana by means of mycelial compatibility. One hundred fifty isolates of B. sorokiniana from eight districts (Dhaka, Gazipur, Dinajpur, Joypurhat, Pabna, Sirajgonj, Kushtia and Chuadanga) of Bangladesh were studied and cultural variation was characterized on the basis of colony color and texture on PDA medium. They were - Black-Mat (B-M), Black-Fluffy (B-F), Ash-Mat (A-M), Brownish Ash-Fluffy (Br. A-F), Blackish Ash-Mat (Bl.AM), Whitish Ash-Mat (W. A-M), Greenish Ash-Fluffy (G. A-F) and Pinkish White-Mat (P.W-M). To compare and understand cultural variability, mycelial compatibility test was done among the cultural groups. Results revealed that selected isolates of different cultural groups showed incompatible reaction. Incompatibility was also noticed between the isolates of same district and different districts. Four antagonistic fungi were isolated from the papaya field soil by serial dilution and were identified as Aspergillus flavus Link., A. fumigatus Fresenius, A. niger van Tiegh. and Trichoderma viride Pers. The soil fungi were selected to evaluate their antagonistic potentiality against the three postharvest pathogenic fungi of Carica papaya L. following "dual culture colony interaction” and volatile and non-volatile metabolites. In dual culture colony interaction, out of four soil fungi, T. viride showed the highest growth inhibition on C. gloeosporioides (84.28%), F. nivale (95.23%) and Fusarium sp. (87.15%). On the other hand A. niger showed the highest growth inhibition on C. gloeosporioides (77.39%), F. nivale (98.63%) and Fusarium sp. (35.05%). The maximum inhibition of radial growth of C. gloeosporioides (77.64%), F. nivale (58.76%) and Fusarium sp. (79.37%). were observed in case of T. viride owing to the volatile metabolites. Whereas the maximum inhibition of radial growth of C. gloeosporioides (58.23%), F. nivale (37.43%) and Fusarium sp. (82.31%) were observed in case of A. niger owing to the volatile metabolites. The maximum inhibition of radial growth of C. gloeosporioides (90.90%), F. nivale (89.13%) and Fusarium sp. (76.84%) were observed in case of T. viride owing to the effect of non-volatile metabolites. The maximum inhibition of radial growth of C. gloeosporioides (92.42%), F. nivale (73.01%) and Fusarium sp. (68.67%) were observed in case of A. niger owing to the effect of non-volatile metabolites. A total of six species and one genus of fungi associated with black leaf spot of Sonneratia apetala Buch. Ham (Kewra); and anthracnose and small leaf spot of S. caseolaris (L.) Engler (Choila) were isolated following “Tissue planting” method. The fungi associated with black spot of S. apetala were Aspergillus fumigatus Fresenius, Colletotrichum lindemuthianum (Sacc. & Magn.) Br. & Cav., Pestalotiopsis guepinii (Desm.) Stey. and Phoma betae Frank. Anthracnose of S. caseolaris showed the association of A. fumigatus and P. guepinii. The fungi associated with leaf spot of S. caseolaris were Curvularia fallax Boedijn, Fusarium Link, Penicillium digitatum (Pers.) Sacc. and P. betae. Frequency percentage of association of P. guepinii was highest (74.10) in black spot of S. apetala whereas the same fungus showed highest frequency percentage (85.70) in case of anthracnose of S. caseolaris. A total of ten fungal species were isolated from the anthracnose symptoms of three varieties of Mangifera indica L. viz., Himsagar, Langra and Amrapali. The isolated fungi were Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler, Aspergillus flavus Link, A. fumigatus Fresenius, A. niger van Tiegh., Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Sacc., Fusarium semitectum Berk. & Rav., Papulaspora sp. Preuss., Penicillium sp. Link., Pestalotiopsis guepinii (Desm.) Stey. and Rhizopus stolonifer (Ehrenb.) Vull. Colletotrichum gloeosporioides showed the highest per cent (26.82) frequency in Himsagar whereas R. stolonifer showed the lowest (2.22). Pestalotiopsis guepinii showed the highest per cent (46.83) frequency in Langra whereas R. stolonifer showed the lowest (1.17). Colletotrichum gloeosporioides showed the highest per cent (38.67) frequency in Amrapali whereas Papulaspora sp. showed the lowest (4.00). Among the isolated fungi C. gloeosporioides, F. semitectum and P. guepinii were found to be pathogenic to three mango varieties. In the present investigation Brassica germplasm were screened in vitro against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, the causal organism of stem rot disease of mustard (Brassica spp.) using cotyledon assay. The germplasm belong to Brassica rapa, B. juncea, B napus and Brassica sp. Among the 81 germplasm and seven cultivated varieties seven genotypes, namely BD 10113, BD 6948, BD 6954, BD 7108, BD7121, BD 7788 and BD7799 exhibited resistant reaction and eight germplasm viz. JBC 05117, BD 10456, BD6974, BD7116, BD7802, BD7804, BD7806, and BD7807 expressed moderately resistant reaction against S. sclerotiorum. The rest 66 germplasm and showed susceptibility at varied degree. Moderately susceptible reaction was observed in 29, susceptible in 26 and highly susceptible reaction was found in 11 germplasm. Five fungicides viz., Bavistin DF, Capvit 50 WP, Dithane M-45, Greengel 72 WP and Tilt 250 EC were selected to evaluate in vitro efficacy against Fusarium oxysporum and F. solani at 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ppm following poisoned food technique. Bavistin, Capvit and Tilt were found to be most effective inhibitor against the test pathogens isolated from brinjal wilt. Bavistin and Tilt completely inhibited the growth of F. oxysporum and F. solani at all the tested concentrations. Out of five plant extracts, Allium sativum identified as the promising botanical fungicide for testing against wilted plants of brinjal. The storage mycoflora associated with seeds of 21 accessions of Corchorus capsularis L. were isolated and identified. Blotter, Paper towel and Agar plate methods were used to isolate the fungi associated with seeds. A total of ten species of fungi viz. Aspergillus flavus , A. fumigatus , A. niger , A. terreus , Curvularia lunata , Colletotrichum corchori , Fusarium oxysporum, Eurotium sp., Penicillium sp. and Rhizopus stolonifer were isolated from the selected jute seeds. Aspergillus spp. and Colletotrichum corchori were predominant in most of the jute accessions. Accession No. A-3047 showed the highest fungal incidence and Accession Nos. A-3361, A-2734 and A-877 showed the lowest. Accession No. A-3361 showed the highest seed germination while Accession No. A-3309 showed the lowest. Mortality of seedling showed the highest in Accession No. A-3309 and the lowest in Accession No. A-3361. Physical purity of seed recorded the highest in Accession No. A- 3361 and the lowest in Accession No. A-3309. There were negative correlation between percentage of fungi and percentage of germination and between percentage of fungi and physical purity of seeds. Vuill and Trichoderma viride Pers . Five fungicides viz. , Bavistin 50 WP, Dithane M-45, Greengel 72 WP, Ridomil MZ Gold and Tall 25 EC at 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ppm were evaluated against the test fungi. Tall 25 EC were found most efficient inhibitor which completely inhibited the radial growth of the test fungi followed by Bavistin 50 WP, Dithane M-45 and Greengel 72 WP. Antifungal properties of ethanol extracts of Azadirachta indica A. Juss., Allium sativum L., Citrus medica L., Datura metel L. and Psidium guajava L . at 5, 10 and 20% concentrations were evaluated against the test fungi. In an average, 6648 fungal colony forming units were settled within five minutes on one square meter area at morning and evening from the air of Dhaka Metropolitan city during February, 2013 to January, 2014. Among the identified fungi, Aspergillus was one of the most dominating genera in all the stations during the above mentioned period. The second was Cladosporium followed by Penicillium, Alternaria, Curvularia, Fusarium, Pestalotia, Colletotrichum, Tricho‐derma, Rhizopus, Nigrospora, Chaetomium, Syncephalastrum, Arthrinium and Bipolaris. In the dry winter (December‐February), Alternaria, Bipolaris, Cladosporium, Curvularia and Drechslera showed its peak. A total of eight species of fungi and one sterile fungus were isolated from the indoor damp walls. The fungi were Aspergillus flavus Link, A. fumigatus Fresenius, A. niger van Teighem, A. niger (culture type 1), A. terreus Thom, A. terreus (culture type 1) , A. ustus, Fusarium sp., Penicillium sp. Ulocladium sp. and a fungus with sterile mycelia. The frequency percentage of association of A. fluvus , A. fumigatus and A. niger was higher than any other fungi. This is the first report of association of fungi in indoor damp walls from the Department of Botany, University of Dhaka and a private house of Dhaka city. Effects of six fungicides were evaluated against the isolated fungi. Bavistin and tall were found most effective against the radial growth of the damp wall fungi. Characteristic symptoms of anthracnose and leaf spot were recorded from diseased leaf samples of Aloe vera L. A total of 8 fungal species, namely Alternaria pluriseptata (Karst. & Har.) Jorstad, Aspergillus flavus Link, Aspergillus niger Van Tieghem, Cladosporium oxysporum Berk. & Curt., Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Sacc., Nigrospora oryzae (Berk. & Br.) Petch, Penicillium sp. and Pestalotiopsis guepinii (Desm.) Stay. were found to be associated with healthy and diseased leaf samples. In addition to above 8 fungi, Curvularia brachyospora Boedijn, Epicoccum purpurascens Ehrenb. ex Schlecht and Sclerotium sp. were also associated with diseased leaf samples of the plant. The prevalence of the fungi ranged 1.43 - 13.35% on healthy leaves and 1.43 - 62.16% on infected leaves. The frequency of C. gloeosporioides was the maximum and that of Aspergillus and Penicillium was the lowest. A total of nine fungi were isolated from two ornamental angiosperms, namely Hemerocallis fulva L. and Pancratium verecundum Ant. belong to Liliaceae. Three species of fungi were found to be associated with the leaf of Hemerocallis fulva. The fungi were Colletotrichum capsici, (Syd.) Bull. & Bisby, Colletotrichum dematium (Pers. Ex Fr.) and Glomerella montana (Sacc.)v Arx & E. Muller. Six species of fungi, namely Alternaria alternata (Fries) Keissler, Colletotrichum orbiculare (Berk & Mont.) Arex., Curvularia clavata Jain, Fusarium solani (Mort.) Sacc., Lasiodiplodia theobromae (Pat.) Seven types of symptom were recorded in four varieties such as CB3, CB9, Hill cotton 1 (HC-1) and 2 (HC-2) of cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) during July, 2005 to June, 2008. The symptoms were Anthracnose, Alternnaria leaf spot, Boll rot, Cercospora leaf spot, Rust, Sclerotium rot and Wilting. Present study revealed that association of 30 species of fungi which belonged to 21 genera such as one one in Zygomycetes, one in Ascomycetes, one in Basidiomycetes, 18 in Deutermycetes and one in sterile fungus. The isolated fungi were Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler, Arthrinium sp., Ascochyta sp., Aspergillus flavus, Link., Aspergillus niger Van Tiegh, Aspergillus sp., Botryodiplodia sp., Cercospora sp., Chaetomium sp., Chaetophoma sp., Cladosporium sp., Colletotrichun coffeanum Noack, z. f. Pflan zenko., Colletotrichum spp., Curvularia clavate Jain , Curvularia lunata ( Wakker) Boedijn, Fusarium moniliforme, Wr. and Reink, Fusarium spp., Nigrospora sp., Pestalotia sp., Penicillium sp., Phoma sp., Pteroconium sp., Puccinia sp., Rhizopus stolonifer (Ehrenb. Ex. Fr) Lind, Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc., Trichoderma viride Pers. ex Fries. and one sterile fungus. Fusarium spp. and Colletotrichum spp. were frequently associated with all the four cotton varieties examined. Botryodiplodia sp. was associated with Hill Cotton 1 (HC-1) and Hill Cotton 2 (HC-2). Grove, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Sacc., Curvularia brachyspora Boedijn., Curvularia fallax Boedijn., Curvularia pallescens Boedijn., Fusarium sp., Nigrospora sacchari (Speg.) Mason., Penicillium sp., Pestalotiopsis spp., Syncephalastrum sp., Trichoderma viride Pers. Ex Fries. and a member of Zygomycetes. Cercospora houtttuyniicola is a new record for Bangladesh. All the isolated fungi were tested for pathogenicity. Ellis, Curvularia fallax Boedijn , C. lunata (Wakker) Boedijn , C. penniseti ( Mitra) Boedijn , C. prasadii R.L. & B.L Mathur, Fusarium flocciferum Corda. Sturm's Deutschl, F. nivale (Fr.) Ces., Rabenth. Herb., Nigrospora sphaerica (Sacc.) Mason, Penicillium spp . , Pseudocercospora fuligena (Roldan) Deighton, Rhizopus stolonifer (Ehrenb. ex. Fr.) Lind and one sterile unidentified fungal species . The percentage of association of Cladosporium elatum isolated from infected fruits was higher than any other fungi. Arthrinium saccharicola , Colletotrichum coffeanum, Corynespora pruni, Fusarium flocciferum and F. nivale are new records for Bangladesh.
