This research letter discusses the sensitivity of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for detecting SARS-CoV-2 antigen, particularly in relation to the omicron sub-lineage BA.4/5. The study compared RDTs and reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) tests in a hospital setting and found that RDTs had a sensitivity of 36.4% and a specificity of 99.7% compared to RT-qPCR. Factors such as symptoms and viral load were found to be associated with RDT performance. The study concludes that while RDTs are reliable for detecting symptomatic individuals with high viral loads, they have limitations when used as a screening method, especially in asymptomatic patients.
