- Abstract
This paper aims to discuss the symbolic figure of the Exu based on an ethnographic research conducted in an Umbanda terreiro on the west side of Rio de Janeiro. At this specific terreiro, the parties celebrating Exus are known as self-service parties, because food and beverages are served unlimitedly to the guests. These convivial moments between psychics, visitors and entities are sought as a time to be in touch with the sacred; however, it is also in the search of the profane, represented in the Exu figure, that some people visit the terreiros on party days. Thus, the Exu is represented as a figure marked by a moral duality between sacred and profane. It is known for being ambiguous, marginal and liminal. This article intends to analyze how this duality makes the feasts to these entities a preference among psychics and visitors of the terreiros researched. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
