This paper discusses the life cycle of decentralized smart contracts, i.e. digital and executable representations of rights and obligations in a multi-party environment. The life cycle relies on blockchain technology, i.e. a distributed digital ledger, to ensure proper implementation and integrity of the smart contracts. The life cycle consists of four subsequent phases: Creation, freezing, execution, and finalization. For each phase actors and technological services are identified and explained in detail. With the life cycle at hand, risks and limitations of smart contracts and the underlying blockchain technology are briefly discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Systems that can autonomously make decisions based on artificial intelligence are becoming ubiquitous. These decisions can affect sensitive areas in our daily life. For example, the price of goods in e-commerce transactions (e.g., via dynamic pricing), or the credit rating of customers (e.g., via automatic credit scoring). The need for more transparency of algorithmic-decision-making (ADM) is not only moving into the focus of lawmakers, but it is also desirable from an engineering perspective. This brief paper investigates different levels of transparency in ADM, and discusses how and to which degree auditing and testing can increase transparency of ADM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
