The extraction of technetium, present in nitric acid medium as pertechnetate anion, is an issue in solvent extraction processes used to recover uranium and plutonium. In the present study, a complexing agent is added in the aqueous nitric acid solution to bind selectively the pertechnetate anion and prevent its extraction into the organic phase or to back extract it in the aqueous phase. Several azacryptands with the addition of hydrophilic groups were synthesized to improve the solubility of the previously studied cage molecule in nitric acid medium. Solvent extraction tests reveal that all the synthesized ligands have a similar complexation strength towards pertechnetate and are able to maintain this anion in the aqueous phase (0.5 M HNO3). These ligands are able to overcome the Hofmeister bias and selectively bind technetium in nitric acid solution. The azacryptand concentration can be increased by a factor of three in the liquid-liquid extraction conditions compared to our previous work. Coordination studies using microcalorimetry, Single Crystal X-Ray Diffraction (SC-XRD), infrared and Raman spectroscopies show the formation of an inclusion complex with hydrogen bonds stabilizing the oxo-anion within the cavity. This solubility improvement is promising for the introduction of this kind of macrocyclic azacryptands in a solvent extraction process.

Technetium is present as the pertechnetate anion in spent nuclear fuel solutions, and its extraction by several extractant systems is a major problem for the liquid-liquid extraction processes used to separate uranium and plutonium. To prevent technetium extraction into the organic phase, a complexing agent may be added to the aqueous nitric acid phase to selectively bind the pertechnetate anion. In the present study, liquid-liquid extraction experiments reveal that technetium distribution ratios are considerably lowered with addition of an azacryptand, which is a good receptor for pertechnetate anion recognition. This ligand is able to overcome the Hofmeister bias and selectively bind techetium in nitric acid solution. Coordination studies using infrared and Raman spectoscopies and DFT calculations show the formation of an inclusion complex with hydrogen bonds stabilizing the oxo-anion within the cavity. For the first time, the cage molecules are studied for an extraction process.

In this work, we report on two new asymmetric dicopper cryptates, characterized by alternate furanyl and p-xylyl spacers. The results of the potentiometric, UV-vis and X-ray diffraction studies are discussed. In particular, for one of the cages in the octaprotonated form, the crystal structure of the complex with nitrate is described. From the point of view of the anion binding in water, the new dicopper cryptates display stronger similarities to each other than to the symmetric analogues (i.e. p-xylyl and furan cryptates). The substitution of even only one spacer modifies the distance between the metal ions. This prevents the development of the CT band, typically accompanying the binding of halides by the furan cryptate, and favors the formation of complexes of different stoichiometry with the linear azide anion, not observed for the symmetric cryptates. The obtained results may be very helpful in the design of new molecular receptors based on dimetallic cryptates, in particular for the tuning of the sensitivity towards specific anionic substrates.

New solid-phases for the binding, separation and extraction of perrhenate and pertechnetate (ReO(4)(-) and TcO(4)(-)) from water solutions have been developed from a selective molecular receptor. Host compounds being capable of encapsulating these oxoanions are of great interest. The azacryptand, containing two tripodal tetra-amine subunits covalently linked by p-xylyl spacers, is known to display high affinity for ReO(4)(-) and TcO(4)(-) in water. The syntheses of new solid phases, obtained by fixing the receptor on mesoporous silica MCM-41 and Amberlite CG50 supports, are here described. FT-IR, micro-Raman, elemental analysis (CHN), sorption isotherms, (29)Si MAS NMR, and SEM/EDS were employed for solids characterisation. Promising performances were found for silica derivatives, for which the amount of the receptor fixed on silica ranged from 0.2 to 0.3 mmol g(-1). The perrhenate sorption mechanism was investigated with the aim to select the conditions for application in batch and fixed bed column systems.

The tris-benzimidazolium cage LH(3)(3+), in MeCN solution, in the presence of OH(-), forms with Cu(I) and Ag(I) ions complexes of formula [M(I)(LH)](2+), in which each metal is linearly coordinated by two carbenes and one imidazolium N-H fragment remains intact. To achieve two-coordination, the two N-heterocyclic moieties of the cage make a saloon-door type motion, with a conformationally costless rotation of ca. 30° each. The two [M(I)(LH)](2+) complexes show high thermodynamic stability and are inert with respect to metal substitution, due to the mechanical constraints imposed by the ligating framework. Complexation with Cu(I) and Ag(I) with the reference unidentate carbene ligand Q, derived from the benzimidazolium precursor QH(+), was studied for comparison. Both metals in MeCN form 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with the carbene ligand Q according to two stepwise equilibria. Q complexes of both metals are labile with respect to metal substitution and those of Ag(I) are more stable than those of Cu(I). A significant cooperative effect has been observed with the formation of the [Ag(I)Q(2)](+) complex., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2011)

Three-component systems made of a tetradentate bis-amino bis-quinoline ligand, a transition metal cation (Ni2+ or Cu2+) and a fluorescent indicator (Coumarin 343) have been studied in a water-dioxane (1 : 4 v/v) mixture, through potentiometric, pH-spectrophotometric and pH-fluorimetric titrations. For the Cu2+ containing systems, an "on-off-on" variation of fluorescence intensity vs. pH has been observed, whereas in the presence of Ni2+ a simple "on-off" profile of the fluorescence intensity vs. pH was obtained. These ternary systems thus behave as window-shaped or conventional pH-indicators, depending whether Cu2+ or Ni2+ is used as the cation.
