Copper complexes have long been considered as a promising class of anticancer or antibacterial therapeutics. In this paper, two novel copper(II) complexes containing a β-carboline derivative and amino acids, namely [Cu(1-Im-βc)(L-Val)]ClO 4 ·0.5H 2 O (Cu1) and [Cu(1-Im-βc)(L-Phe)]ClO 4 ·0.5H 2 O (Cu2), where 1-Im-βc = 1-(2-imidazolyl)-β-carboline, L-Val = L-valine, and L-Phe = L-phenylalanine, were designed and synthesized. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, molar conductivity measurements, and mass spectrometry to determine their spatial structures and compositions. Both complexes bind to DNA by insertion. The complexes also show a good affinity for human serum albumin (HSA). In addition, the antitumor activity of the two complexes against lung cancer cells (A549), cervical cancer cells (HeLa), and breast cancer cells (MBA-MD-231) is significantly superior to that of the traditional antitumor drug, cisplatin. Finally, the anticancer mechanism results show that the complexes can induce apoptosis in HeLa cells, which is associated with mitochondrial damage, oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and activation of the caspase protein family. This study demonstrates that the introduction of aromatic heterocyclic alkaloid ligands with a broad spectrum of biological activities and water-soluble amino acid ligands into copper complexes can regulate their amphiphilic properties and biological activity, so as to obtain highly efficient copper-based therapeutics.

This paper describes the recognition process of tetrahedral [Cu II (tnz) 2 X 2 ] (X = Cl, Br) complexes by a DNA chain, analyzing the specific interaction between the DNA bases and backbone with the metal and the tinidazole (tnz) ligand. We identified the coordination of the copper metal center with one or two phosphates as the first recognition site for the tinidazole copper(II) complexes, while the ligands present partial intercalation into the minor groove. Also, we discuss a novel trigonal copper(I) tnz bromide complex, obtained by reducing the previously reported [Cu(tnz) 2 Br 2 ]. This complex sheds light on the mechanism of action of tnz metal complexes as one of the most stable DNA-complex adducts depicts a trigonal geometry around the copper ion.

In this article, a novel triphenylamine-modified salicylaldehyde Schiff base 2-(((4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)imino)methyl)-4-(pyridine-4-yl)phenol (HL) was synthesized and structurally characterized. HL possessed D-π-A structure and exhibited typical AIE property in THF/H 2 O. It was applied to selectively recognize Cu 2+ through an on-off mode in THF/H 2 O (1/9, v/v), and the fluorescence attenuation was attributed to a paramagnetic quenching effect of Cu 2+ together with the abatement of HL aggregates. Hence, the detection limit achieved was as low as 1.32 × 10 -7 M. The spectroscopic and ESI-HRMS results revealed a 1 : 2 complexation ratio of Cu 2+ with HL. The mechanism for sensing Cu 2+ was further confirmed by performing DFT calculations. Owing to the large affinity between Cu 2+ and His, the resultant CuL2 system was further used to detect His via the off-on method based on the displacement of ligands. The detection limit for His reached 5.14 × 10 -8 M. Furthermore, HL was available to prepare handy indicator papers for the on-site recognition of Cu 2+ and His. Confocal fluorescent imaging demonstrated that HL could sequentially respond to intracellular Cu 2+ and His.

Three novel binuclear copper(ii) complexes with reduced l-serine Schiff bases were synthesized and their structures were analyzed with single-crystal X-ray diffraction and DFT calculations. The crystal data revealed that all of these binuclear complexes are chiral. Both 5-halogenated (bromo- and chloro-) binuclear complexes exhibit right-handed helix structural character. Interestingly, the 5-methyl-containing analogue has a two-dimensional pore structure. In this paper, the esterolysis reactivity of the as-prepared complexes shows that in the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl acetate (PNPA) these three complexes provide 26, 18, 40-fold rate acceleration as compared to the spontaneous hydrolysis of PNPA at pH 7.0, respectively. Under selected conditions, in excess buffered aqueous solution a rate enhancement by three orders of magnitude was observed for the catalytic hydrolysis of another carboxylic ester, p-nitrophenyl picolinate (PNPP). These complexes efficiently promoted PNPP hydrolysis in a micellar solution of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), giving rise to a rate enhancement in excess of four orders of magnitude, which is approximately 2.0-3.2 times higher than that in the buffer.

An unsymmetrical o-phenylenediamine derivative, L (7-hydroxy-4-methyl-8-(1-(phenyl- (pyridin-2-yl)methyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)-2H-chromen-2-one), has been synthesized from (E)-N 1 -(phenyl(pyridine-2-yl)methylene)benzene-1,2-diamine with 7-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-oxo-2H-chromene-8-carbaldehyde and characterized by X-ray, IR, 1 H NMR and ESI-MS spectral analyses. The X-ray structure shows L as a cyclic benzimidazole derivative, but it undergoes ring-opening upon reaction with transition metal ions. L is non-emissive in 9 : 1 (v/v) EtOH/H 2 O (HEPES buffer, pH 7.4) but becomes highly fluorescent upon Zn 2+ coordination, and the emissive Zn(ii) complex undergoes transmetallation in the presence of Cu 2+ ions specifically, followed by amine to imine oxidation, i.e. an oxidative dehydrogenation (OD) reaction -(2e + 2H + ) occurs. The transmetallation of Zn 2+ from the complex by Cu 2+ (CuCl 2 ) separated the non-emissive X-ray diffractable crystal of [Cu(L'')Cl] (L'' = amine oxidized form of L). A square pyramidal [Cu(L'')][ClO 4 ] complex was also isolated from the reaction of L with Cu(CH 3 CN) 4 (ClO 4 ) in the presence of air, and in this complex the amine is also oxidized to the imine. Here, copper ions in the presence of air play an important role in the OD reaction of L as determined by EPR and cyclic voltammetry studies. The ligand, L, is used for Zn 2+ ion recovery from a municipally supplied water sample. A paper strip detection kit for Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ is designed using L. The ligand is also used for intracellular Zn 2+ detection in a human liver cancer cell line (HepG2).

In this paper, we focused on the analysis of the effects mediated by different cyclic dithiocarbamic ligands (DTC) on three classes of antiproliferative coordination compounds, namely, Ru(iii) complexes with the general formulae [Ru(DTC) 3 ] and [Ru 2 (DTC) 5 ]Cl, and the neutral Cu(ii) derivatives of the type [Cu(DTC) 2 ]. In particular, we present the synthesis and characterization of a library of total 23 coordination compounds containing Ru(iii) or Cu(ii) as the biologically-active metal center and two or more dithiocarbamato (DTC) ligands derived from cyclic amines (aliphatic or aromatic). Several techniques including elemental analysis, X-ray crystallography, ESI-MS, 1 H-NMR spectroscopy, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectrophotometry were used to characterize the compounds, which highlighted the different electronic behaviors generated by the substituents within the DTC moiety. Moreover, the synthesized compounds were tested for their stability in order to investigate their antiproliferative activity against 3 human cancer cell lines, namely, HeLa, HepG2 and HepG2/SB3. In particular, HepG2/SB3 was chosen for its aggressiveness due to upregulation of the anti-apoptotic protein SerpinB3. Finally, the most promising compounds are studied in terms of log P. Overall, the results reveal the drug-likeness of some of the derivatives of copper(ii) and ruthenium(iii).

The role of copper in cancer progression has been established since decades. Additionally, copper is able to stimulate angiogenesis through the control of VEGF expression and activity in endothelial cells. In this paper a tetrapeptide, belonging to the histidine-proline-rich glycoprotein (HPRG) and encompassing four repeats of the sequence GHHPH (named TetraHPRG), was synthesized and its copper(ii) complex species were characterized by means of potentiometry, UV-vis, circular dichroism (CD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electron spray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Moreover, a peptide covalently bound through an amidic bond to trehalose (TH-TetraHPRG) was designed and synthesized as a prodrug system. The activity of both TetraHPRG and TH-TetraHPRG molecules on copper and VEGF induced angiogenic responses in endothelial cells was assessed. The two peptides show a similar and effective anti-angiogenic activity on both molecular and cellular responses. Since the trehalose derivative has a higher resistance to enzymatic degradation, it can be further exploited as a potential drug delivery system with anti-angiogenic activity.

Copper(ii) bis(thiosemicarbazone) derivatives have been used extensively in positron emission tomography (PET) to image hypoxia and blood flow and to radiolabel cells for cell tracking. These applications depend on control of redox potentials and lipophilicity of the bis(thiosemicarbazone) complexes, which can be adjusted by altering peripheral ligand substituents. This paper reports the synthesis of a library of new dissymmetrically substituted bis(thiosemicarbazone) ligands by controlling the condensation reactions between dicarbonyl compounds and 4-substituted-3-thiosemicarbazides or using acetal protection. Copper complexes of the new ligands have been prepared by reaction with copper acetate or via transmetallation of the corresponding zinc complexes, which are convenient precursors for the rapid synthesis of radio-copper complexes. Well-defined structure-activity relationships linking ligand alkylation patterns with redox potential and lipophilicity of the complexes are reported.

Hemopressin is a neuropeptide, derived from the degradation of the α(1)-chain of hemoglobin, and possesses several pharmacologic properties, such as the ability to block cannabinoid CB1 receptor activity, to cause dose-dependent hypotension and to inhibit food intake. Actually, human hemopressin (PVNFKLLSH) is only the precursor of a class of longer peptides, called "Pepcans", which bear additional residues at their amino-terminus and possess slightly different chemical and biological properties with respect to hemopressin. The presence of a histidyl residue and the free terminal amine imparts to hemopressin and its derivatives good binding properties towards transition metal ions. In this paper, we present a wide investigation on the complex-formation equilibria of human hemopressin and three analogues towards the Cu(ii) and Ni(ii) ions. The study showed that the main coordination site is always the amino terminus (if not protected), while the C-terminal histidine acts only as an anchoring site for the metal ions at acidic pH, with the formation of a macrochelate complex. The presence of additional residues in N-terminal position produces significant differences in the protonation and complex-formation behaviors of these peptides, which can be explained in terms of charge of the ligand and coordination environment. Although the participation of metal ions in the biological activity of hemopressin and Pepcans has not yet been demonstrated, the data reported here can help to shed light on the mechanisms governing the action of these neuropeptides in vivo.

Viomycin is a basic peptide antibiotic, which is among the most effective agents against multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. In this paper we provide the characteristics of its acid base properties, coordination preferences towards the Cu(ii) ions, as well as the reactivity of the resulting complexes against plasmid DNA and HDV ribozyme. Careful coordination studies throughout the wide pH range allow for the characterisation of all the Cu(ii)-viomycin complex species. The assignment of proton chemical shifts was achieved by NMR experiments, while the DTF level of theory was applied to support molecular structures of the studied complexes. The experiments with the plasmid DNA reveal that at the physiological levels of hydrogen peroxide the Cu(ii)-viomycin complex is more aggressive against DNA than uncomplexed metal ions. Moreover, the degradation of DNA by viomycin can be carried out without the presence of transition metal ions. In the studies of antigenomic delta ribozyme catalytic activity, viomycin and its complex are shown to modulate the ribozyme functioning. The molecular modelling approach allows the indication of two different locations of viomycin binding sites to the ribozyme.

In this paper we present a first insight into the cytotoxic action mode of copper(I) iodide or copper(I) thiocyanate complexes with a phosphine derivative of sparfloxacin (a 3rd generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic agent) and 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline or 2,2'-biquinoline as auxiliary ligands. The in vitro cytotoxic activity of the new complexes was tested against two cancer cell lines (CT26--mouse colon carcinoma and A549--human lung adenocarcinoma). An ICP-MS study revealed a marked time-dependent intracellular copper accumulation of the tested compounds. In addition, confocal microscopy imaging showed accumulation of the complexes inside whole cells and their emission of blue light. The complexes generate reactive oxygen species in the cancer cells, which was examined by using two different fluorescent probes. Moreover, (I) DNA intercalation studied by luminescence spectroscopy, circular dichroism and molecular docking, and (II) plasmid DNA damage also demonstrate their significant cytotoxicity. All these observed biological effects contribute to the induction of apoptosis, observed at a great predominance.

In this paper we present new copper(i) iodide or copper(i) thiocyanate complexes with hydroxymethyldiphenylphosphine (PPh2(CH2OH)) or phosphine derivatives of sparfloxacin, a 3(rd) generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic agent (PPh2(CH2-Sf)) and 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dmp) or 2,2'-biquinoline (bq) auxiliary ligands. The synthesised complexes were fully characterised by NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy as well as by mass spectrometry. Selected structures were additionally analysed using X-ray and DFT methods. All complexes proved to be stable in solution in the presence of water and atmospheric oxygen for several days. The cytotoxic activity of the complexes was tested against two cancer cell lines (CT26 - mouse colon carcinoma and A549 - human lung adenocarcinoma). Applying two different incubation times, the studies enabled a preliminary estimation of the dependence of the selectivity and the mechanism of action on the type of diimine and phosphine ligands. The results obtained showed that complexes with PPh2(CH2-Sf) are significantly more active than those with PPh2(CH2OH). On the other hand, the relative impact of diimine on cytotoxicity is less pronounced. However, the dmp complexes are characterised by strong inhibitory properties, while the bq ones are rather not. This confirms the interesting and promising biological properties of the investigated group of copper(i) complexes, which undoubtedly are worthy of further biological studies.

In this paper, a Cu, N co-doped TiO2 nanosheet with increased visible light photocatalytic activity was successfully synthesized using a biomimetic layer-by-layer deposition process. The polymer, branched-polyethyleneimine (b-PEI) was used as an induction agent for the hydrolysis of titanium bis(ammonium lactato)-dihydroxide (Ti-BALDH) as well as for a nitrogen resource, and the graphene oxide (GO) was used as a two-dimensional nano-template. The positively charged b-PEI will bind to the negatively charged GO and titania. In a typical layer-by-layer deposition process, GO nanosheets are exposed in an alternating fashion to aqueous b-PEI, CuCl2 and Ti-BALDH solutions, thus, making the layer-by-layer deposition of a conformal b-PEI/Cu-Ti-O coating on the GO. Subsequent b-PEI and GO pyrolysis at 550 °C under air yielded Cu, N co-doped TiO2 nanosheets. The materials obtained were comprehensively investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Raman spectra, photoluminescence spectra and electron paramagnetic resonance. The Cu, N co-doped TiO2 nanosheets showed obviously enhanced photocatalytic activity which was evaluated by degradation of methylene blue under visible light irradiation. This research might provide some new insights for the "green synthesis" of the simultaneous doping of two kinds of foreign atoms into TiO2 with controlled morphology and photocatalytic properties.

The interaction of salphen-type NiII, CuII and ZnII complexes with native DNA was investigated by exploiting linear dichroism experiments. The NiII complex behaves as a typical intercalator, binding strongly and stiffening and unwinding the DNA. The strength of the DNA interaction is slightly weaker for the copper complex and much weaker for the zinc complex. Plasmid-DNA gel electrophoresis experiments indicated that while CuII and ZnII complexes do not induce the unwinding of supercoiled DNA, the NiII complex has a nuclease activity without the addition of external agents. On the other hand, as shown in the PCR assays, we demonstrate that, at the used concentrations, only the CuII complex is able to inhibit the DNA amplification mediated by Taq DNA polymerase. In this paper we have also reported a detailed characterization of the three compounds including 2D-NMR and ESI-mass experiments and X-ray single crystal structure of the copper and nickel compounds.

The binding mode provided by an unprotected peptide with non-coordinating side-chains is simple and well understood. However, when particular residues are inserted into the peptide sequence, they can have a significant impact on the stability of the formed complexes. The presence of non-bonding side chains of amino acids close to the metal binding centre in the peptide/protein can provide special interactions which result in increasing the stabilization of the formed species. Moreover, these interactions can play a crucial role in generating particular protein structures and in influencing biological activity. In the present paper it is shown how peptides with no specific predisposition for metal binding, like ANF peptides, can form metal complexes with a very high thermodynamic stability. For better understanding this peculiar behavior, a combined pH-metric and spectroscopic method was used to determine the stability and the solution structure of Cu(2+) and Ni(2+) complexes with NSFRY-NH(2) (ANF peptide) and a series of analogue peptides. All obtained data support the hypothesis that the complex-formation process is very similar for both metal ions and all the ligands, involving some intramolecular interactions among the different side chains. The two-dimensional NMR analysis of nickel complexes showed the occurrence of many inter-residue correlations and suggested the presence of a direct interaction between the d electrons of the metal ion and the π-ring system of the aromatic side-chains of the ligand.

In this paper we present the formation of mono- and binuclear complexes by the octapeptide (c(HKHPHKHP)) with copper(II) ions. The ligand was synthesized manually by the solid-phase method. Its characteristic cyclic structure significantly influences the coordination abilities. The studied peptide has two Pro amino acid residues in the sequence. This causes the formation of two independent centres able to undertake metal ion binding. The potentiometric and spectroscopic (UV-vis, CD and EPR) studies were carried out in aqueous solutions in the pH range 2.5-11.0 at 298 K, HNO(3) was used as the solvent with KNO(3), where the ionic strength was 0.1 M. The analysis of the potentiometric together with spectroscopic studies have shown that the investigated peptide forms only mono-nuclear complexes when the metal-to-ligand molar ratio is 1 : 1. When the concentration of Cu(ii) ions increases and the ligand-to-metal molar ratio is 1 : 2 the formation of binuclear complexes is preferred in the system.

This paper describes the synthesis, structure and spectroscopic and magnetic properties of two (μ-phenoxo)(μ-hydroxo)dicopper(II) complexes (1 and 2) which contain similar N,O-donor atoms but with distinct coordination arrangements around the Cu(II) centers. Structural and magnetic studies of 1 and 2 allowed us to evaluate, for the first time, the individual contributions of the {Cu(μ-phenoxo)Cu} and {Cu(μ-hydroxo)Cu} structural units to the antiferromagnetic coupling between the Cu(II) centers in these complexes.

In this paper, copper(I) amidate complexes (2-3), proposed intermediates in copper-catalyzed Goldberg reaction, have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, (1)H NMR and X-ray crystallography. Ancillary ligand bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf) has contributed greatly to the stability of the copper-amidate complexes due to its strong chelating ability and weak intermolecular interactions. Thermal gravimetric analyses are carried out to determine the thermal competency of complexes 2-3 as the intermediates of the high-temperature Goldberg reactions. Reaction of complexes 2 and 3 with aryl halides generates the N-arylation products 5-8, accompanied by the formation of a copper(I) complex Cu(dppf)X (X = I or Br) 4, which has been determined by LC-MS analysis. These results provide new evidence for the mechanism of copper(I)-catalyzed Goldberg reaction.

Polyaniline/Cu(0.05)Zn(0.95)O (PANI/CZO) nanocomposites were prepared by in situ inverse microemulsion method. Based on the characterization of the crystal structure, chemical composition, and morphology of the samples, it was confirmed that CZO nanoparticles were incorporated into the polyaniline matrix. Studies of the antimicrobial activities of the samples against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans were carried out using powder inhibition zone, minimum inhibitory concentration and minimal bactericidal concentrations methods. The results showed clearly that, as an antibacterial agent, PANI/CZO nanocomposites exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against the growth of microorganisms. Furthermore, the antibacterial mechanism of the samples was also deduced in this paper.

Metallo-organic compounds are interesting to study for their antitumor activity and related applications. This paper deals with the syntheses, characterization, structure determination of a copper complex of anthracenyl terpyridine (1) and its plasmid cleavage and cytotoxicity towards different cancer cell lines. The complex binds CT-DNA through partial intercalation mode. The plasmid cleavage studies carried out using pBR322 and pUC18 resulted in the formation of all the three forms of the plasmid DNA. Plasmid cleavage studies carried out with a non-redoxable Zn(2+) complex (2) supported the role of the redox activity of copper in 1. The complex 1 showed remarkable antiproliferative activity against cancer cell lines, viz., cervical (HeLa, SiHa, CaSki), breast (MCF-7), liver (HepG2) and lung (H1299). A considerable lowering was observed in the IC(50) values of HPV-infected (viz., HeLa, SiHa, CaSki) vs. non-HPV-infected cell lines (MCF-7, HepG2, H1299). Antiproliferative activity of 1 was found to be much higher than the carboplatin when treated with the same cell lines. Incubation of the cells with 1 results in granular structures only with the HPV-infected cells and not with others as studied by phase contrast and fluorescence microscopy. The lower IC(50) value observed in case of 1 with HPV-infected cell lines may be correlated with the involvement of HPV oncoprotein. The role of HPV has been further augmented by transfecting the MCF-7 cells (originally not possessing HPV copy) with e6 oncoprotein cDNA. To our knowledge this is the first copper complex that causes cell death by interacting with HPV oncoprotein followed by exhibition of remarkable antiproliferative activity.

Syntheses and crystal structures of four new hydrazone-based Cu(ii) complexes, [{Cu(L(1))(H(2)O)}(2)(mu-pyraz)](ClO(4))(2) (), [{Cu(L(1))(OClO(3))}(2)(mu-4,4'-bipy)] (), [{Cu(L(2)H)}(mu-pyraz){Cu(L(2)H)(OClO(3))}].(ClO(4)) () and [{Cu(L(2))}(2)(mu-bpe)] () [L(1)H = condensation product of benzhydrazide and pyridine-2-carbaldehyde and L(2)H(2) = condensation product of benzoyl acetone and benzhydrazide], bridged by various organic spacers [pyrazine (pyraz), 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bipy) and 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe)] are reported in this paper. The single-crystal X-ray crystallographic studies reveal that all are dinuclear units where and form strong intermolecular H-bonding to form sheets of interconnected ions, whereas forms sheets of dinuclear chains through pi-pi interactions; in , molecules are linked only through van der Waals interactions. The variable-temperature magnetic moment studies reveal that and show antiferromagnetic coupling between the Cu(ii) centers at lower temperatures. The binding ability of with calf thymus DNA [CT-DNA] is reported using various spectroscopic studies (UV-Vis titration, circular dichroism and fluorescence). The binding constants of with CT-DNA, as calculated by different methodologies, are of the order of 10(5) M(-1). The mode of interaction between and CT-DNA has been predicted using circular dichroic (CD) spectroscopy, where it has been shown that most probably interacts with DNA via intercalation between the base pairs leading to a change in B-DNA conformation. is also able to cleave supercoiled (SC) plasmid DNA pUC19 in a time and dose dependent manner as demonstrated by agarose gel electrophoresis, and also demonstrates its potential to cleave the SC plasmid DNA via both oxidative and hydrolytic mechanisms. Approximately 50% of leukemic cells are found to be dead when two representative leukemic cell lines are exposed to ( approximately 80 muM) even for 24 h as determined by different cell cytotoxicity assays. Preliminary results also showed that, at 20 muM, could selectively induce apoptosis in leukemic cells without affecting normal lymphocytes.

Earlier we reported the tendency of ferrocenylmethyl substituted amino acids to organize around Cu(ii) in a C(2) symmetry. In this paper we have utilized this property to form a chiral cavity using a l-tyrosine derivative. Structural characterization of [Cu(II)(S-fTyr)(2)(MeCN)(2)] (), where S-fTyr(1-) is ferrocenylmethyl-l-tyrosinate, showed that the alignment of two tyrosine aromatic rings around the fifth coordination site generates a narrow cavity. Structural characterization of [Cu(S-fTyr)(2)(pyrazine)] (), [Cu(S-fTyr)(2)(pyridine)] (), [Cu(S-fTyr)(2)(bpy)] () and [Cu(S-fTyr)(2)(H(2)O)] () revealed that planar heterocyclic N-donors as guests stabilized the cavity, while polar water molecules destroyed it. Electrochemical properties of the complexes showed a shift of Cu(II)/Cu(I) potentials depending on the strength of the guest binding inside the cavity.

Copper-doped ceria catalysts feature in a variety of catalytic reactions. One important application is selective hydrogen combustion via oxygen exchange, which forms the basis of cyclic oxidative dehydrogenation. This paper describes the synthesis of monophasic (doped) and biphasic (supported) Cu-ceria catalysts, that are then characterized using a combination of temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. The catalysts are analyzed both as fresh samples and after redox cycling at 550-800 degrees C. TPR and XRD characterization clarify the role of the active sites on the catalyst surface and the copper-ceria interactions. Depending on the catalyst type, reduction occurs at approximately 110 degrees C, approximately 150 degrees C, or approximately 190 degrees C. The reduction at 110 degrees C is ascribed to highly dispersed copper species doped in the ceria lattice, and that at 190 degrees C to CuO crystallites supported on ceria. Remarkably, both types converge to the 150 degrees C feature after redox cycling. The reduction temperature of the doped catalyst increases after redox cycling, indicating that stable Cu clusters form at the surface. Conversely, the reduction temperature of the "supported" catalyst decreases after redox cycling, and the CuO crystallites disappear. With this knowledge, a copper-doped ceria catalyst is analyzed after application in selective hydrogen combustion (16 consecutive redox cycles at 550 degrees C). No CuO crystallites are observed, and the sample reduces at approximately 110 degrees C. This suggests that copper-doped ceria is the active oxygen exchange phase in selective hydrogen combustion.

This paper reports on the synthesis, characterization and electrochemical properties of four ferrocenylmethyl substituted L-amino acid ligands and their Cu(II) complexes. Structural characterization of the complexes of L-methionine and L-asparagine derived ligands showed axial coordination of weak thioether and amide respectively to Cu(II). Coordination of the thioether group of L-methionine to copper (2.791 A) is shorter than observed in the electron transfer protein plastocyanin (2.9 A). Methionine thioether does not bind in synthetic Cu(II) complexes. The characterization of bis-complexes (metal : ligand ratio 1 : 2) with L-serine and L-threonine derivatives showed axial coordination of water with a shorter Cu-O bond length compared to that observed in the corresponding amino acid complexes. The structures also revealed separation of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions due to amino acid and ferrocene respectively which resulted in the formation of interesting H-bonded networks.

This paper reports the synthesis of bimetallic zinc thiosemicarbazone complexes with rigid aromatic linkers, using either 1,3- or 1,4- benzenediamines or 1,3- or 1,4- benzenedialdehydes as the basis of the linking groups. Non-rigid aliphatic diamines and dialdehydes were also used to link the zinc chelating units. Reaction of a bis(thiosemicarbazone) with a pendant NHNH(2) group with monoaldehydes or ketones gives a range of monomeric complexes with exocylic imine groups bearing a range of substituents. The zinc complexes can be quantitatively and rapidly transmetallated to the corresponding copper complexes and this route or direct reaction with the free ligand can be used to radiolabel the monomeric species with (64)Cu. In vivo and in vitro studies of one of the (64)Cu imine complexes shows substantial hypoxic selectivity and high tumour uptake in a murine model.
