Several new cobalt(iii) complexes containing (3-aminopropyl)dimethylphosphine (pdmp) have been prepared, and their molecular structures have been determined. A dichloro complex of trans(Cl,Cl)-cis(P,P)-[CoCl2(pdmp)2]PF6 (1) was prepared from trans-[CoCl2(py)4]Cl·6H2O and pdmp. X-Ray crystallography confirmed the (C2)-chair2 conformation of two six-membered pdmp chelate rings in 1, while the analogous 1,3-bis(dimethylphosphino)propane (dmpp) complex trans-[CoCl2(dmpp)2]ClO4 (3) exhibited the (D2d)-twist2 conformation. Substitution reactions of 1 for ethane-1,2-diamine (en), pentane-2,4-dionate (acac), and N,N-dimethyldithiocarbamate (dtc) gave the mixed-ligand tris(chelate)-type complexes of [Co(en)2(pdmp)]Cl2(PF6) (5), [Co(acac)(pdmp)2](PF6)2 (7), and [Co(dtc)3–n(pdmp)n](PF6)n [n = 1 (9) or 2 (10)], respectively. The conformer of the complex cation in 5 was assigned as lel·ob·chair by X-ray analysis. In the case of the acac complex 7, both trans(P,N) (7a) and trans(N,N) (7b) isomers were isolated, and the complex cations were characterized as syn-chair2 and anti-chair2 conformers, respectively, with respect to the six-membered pdmp chelate rings. These conformers coincide with the most stable ones anticipated by the DFT optimum geometry calculations. In the crystal structure of trans(P,N)-[Co(dtc)(pdmp)2](BPh4)2 (10′) one of the pdmp chelate rings adopted a skew-boat (twist) conformation, which reduced the intramolecular steric ring–ring interaction effectively. Hydrogen, highly valued for its pristine cleanliness and remarkable efficiency as an emerging energy source, is anticipated to ascend to a preeminent status within the forthcoming energy landscape. Electrocatalytic water splitting is considered a pivotal, eco-friendly, and sustainable strategy for hydrogen production. The substantial energy consumption stemming from oxygen evolution side reactions significantly impedes the commercial viability of water electrolysis. Consequently, the pursuit of a cost-effective and efficacious oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst stands as an imperative strategy for realizing hydrogen production via water electrolysis. Layered metal oxides, owing to their robust anisotropic properties, versatile adjustability, and extensive surface area, have emerged as suitable candidates for OER catalysts. However, owing to the distinctive attributes of layered metal oxides, ongoing investigations into these materials are slightly fragmented, lacking universal consensus. This article comprehensively surveys the recent advancements in layered metal oxide-based OER catalysts, categorized into single metal oxides, alkali cobalt oxides, perovskites, and miscellaneous metal oxides. Initially, the main OER intermediate reaction steps of layered metal oxides are scrutinized. Subsequently, the design, mechanism, and application of several pivotal layered metal oxides in the OER are systematically delineated. Finally, a summary is provided, alongside the proposal of future research trajectories and challenges encountered by layered metal oxides, with the aspiration that this paper may serve as a valuable reference for scholars in the field. The design of an efficient OER catalyst is significant for water splitting. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as promising electrocatalysts due to their diversity of structure and tunability of function. In this paper, 2D FexCo1−x-MOF1/NF with an extended ligand (biphenyl-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid, BPDC) is constructed on nickel foam by a solvothermal method. Compared with the MOF2 synthesized by using BDC (1,4-bezenedicarboxylate), MOF1 shows excellent performance. Among MOF1, Fe0.5Co0.5-MOF1/NF exhibits outstanding performance with a low overpotential (217 mV) and a small Tafel slope (31.16 mV Dec−1) at 10 mA cm−2 and performs well at a high current density. In addition, the catalyst is remarkable in terms of durability both in alkaline solution and simulated seawater. The synergetic effect between Fe and Co and more active sites exposed play an important role in improving the OER activity. In this study, cobalt-doped hexagonal phase WO3 nanorods were prepared by a template-free hydrothermal method. The effects of varying the cobalt doping concentration on the microscopic morphology and electrochromic properties of hexagonal phase WO3 films were investigated. Films synthesized with the optimal cobalt element doping concentration demonstrate a notable improvement in their electrochromic properties compared to the pure hexagonal phase WO3 films. The film doped with 1.5% Co exhibited excellent cycling stability, retaining 98.55% of its original value after 500 cycles. The introduction of cobalt results in the formation of a nanorod structure with a high specific surface area within the film. This structure provides additional reaction sites for the electrochromic reaction process, thereby enhancing the optical modulation and coloration efficiency of WO3. The resulting films with excellent electrochromic properties provide a convenient and effective means for ion-doped modification of WO3-based electrochromic films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Complexes featuring metal–metal bonds play crucial roles in catalysis and small molecule activation due to the synergistic effects between the metals. Here, we report a series of homometallic cobalt complexes with metal–metal interactions that have been successfully stabilized by a multidentate ligand platform. The synthesis and characterization of specific cis- and trans-isomers of a cobalt(II) bis-nalidixate complex with a pyridine-based urea, 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)urea (L), ligand are reported. The two isomers, cis-[Co(L)2(NALD)2]·0.5DMF·H2O and trans-[Co(L)2(NALD)2]·2DMF·2H2O (the nalidixate anion is abbreviated to NALD) were prepared by anion-guided synthesis. When cobalt(II) chloride was used as one of the reactants, the reaction yielded the trans-isomer under ambient reaction conditions. Whereas a reaction using cobalt(II) nitrate provided only the cis-isomer when the reaction was continued for a prolonged time. On the other hand, the cis-isomer was converted to the trans-isomer in solution upon treatment with chloride ions. The chloride-assisted formation of the trans-isomer was investigated by a UV-visible study, and it passed through a bond reorganization by forming a tetrahedral intermediate complex. A DFT calculation was carried out to show the difference in energy between the isomers as well as the energy of a plausible tetrahedral cobalt complex. The aggregation behavior of the cis-isomer in different solvents was investigated, and solvent-dependent aggregation and a solvent-dependent Cotton effect were observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although cobalt(I) bis-phosphine complexes have been implicated in many selective C–C bond-forming reactions, until recently relatively few of these compounds have been fully characterized or have been shown to be intermediates in catalytic reactions. In this paper we present a new practical method for the synthesis and isolation of several cobalt(I)-bis-phosphine complexes and their use in Co(I)-catalyzed reactions. We find that easily prepared (in situ generated or isolated) bis-phosphine and (2,6-N-aryliminoethyl)pyridine (PDI) cobalt(II) halide complexes are readily reduced by 1,4-bis-trimethylsilyl-1,4-dihydropyrazine or commercially available lithium nitride (Li3N), leaving behind only innocuous volatile byproducts. Depending on the structures of the bis-phosphines, the cobalt(I) complex crystallizes as a phosphine-bridged species [(P∼P)(X)CoI[μ-(P∼P)]CoI(X)(P∼P)] or a halide-bridged species [(P∼P)CoI[μ-(X)]2CoI(P∼P)]. Because the side-products are innocuous, these methods can be used for the in situ generation of catalytically competent Co(I) complexes for a variety of low-valent cobalt-catalyzed reactions of even sensitive substrates. These complexes are also useful for the synthesis of rare cationic [(P∼P)CoI-η4-diene]+ X− or [(P∼P)CoI-η6-arene]+ X− complexes, which are shown to be excellent single-component catalysts for the following regioselective reactions of dienes: heterodimerizations with ethylene or methyl acrylate, hydroacylation and hydroboration. Treatment of [Co(N2)(tBuPNP)] (tBuPNP = anion of 2,5-bis(di-tert-butylphosphinomethyl)pyrrole) with one equivalent of an aryl azide generates the four-coordinate imido complexes [Co(NAr)(tBuPNP)] (Ar = mesityl, phenyl, or 4-tBu-phenyl). X-ray crystallographic analysis of the compounds shows an unusual square-planar geometry about cobalt with nearly linear imido units. In the presence of the hydrogen atom donor, TEMPOH, [Co(NPh)(tBuPNP)] undergoes addition of the H atom to the imido nitrogen to generate the corresponding amido complex, [Co(NHPh)(tBuPNP)], whose structure and composition were verified by independent synthesis. Despite the observation of H atom transfer reactivity with TEMPOH, the imido complexes do not show catalytic activity for C–H amination or aziridination for several substrates examined. In the case of [Co(NPh)(tBuPNP)], addition of excess azide produced the tetrazido complex, [Co(N4Ph2)(tBuPNP)], whose bond metrics were most consistent with an anionic Ph2N4 ligand. Density Functional Theory (DFT) investigations of the imido and tetrazido species suggest that they adopt a ground state best described as possessing a low-spin cobalt(II) ion ferromagnetically coupled to an iminyl radical. Heteroleptic metal complexes containing CuII, CoII, and ZnII, incorporating curcumin and a Schiff base ligand (L), were synthesized and characterized, and their antifungal activity was evaluated. Their antifungal activities were investigated individually and in combination with fluconazole. Utilizing various analytical techniques such as UV-Vis, FT-IR, NMR, ESI-MS, TGA-DTG, elemental analyses, conductance, and magnetic susceptibility measurements, complex C1 ([Cu(Cur)LCl(H2O)]) was assigned a distorted octahedral geometry, while complexes C2 ([Co(Cur)LCl(H2O)]) and C3 ([Zn(Cur)LCl(H2O)]) were assigned octahedral geometries. Among these complexes, C2 exhibited the highest inhibitory activity against both FLC-susceptible and resistant strains of Candida albicans. Furthermore, C2 demonstrated candidicidal activity and synergistic interactions with fluconazole, effectively inhibiting the growth and survival of both FLC-resistant and FLC-sensitive C. albicans strains. The complex displayed a dose-dependent inhibition of drug efflux pumps in FLC-resistant C. albicans strains, indicating its potential to disrupt the cell membrane of these strains. The significant role of membrane efflux transporters in the development of antifungal drug resistance within Candida species has been extensively documented and our findings indicate that complex C2 specifically targets this crucial factor, thereby playing a pivotal role in mitigating drug resistance in C. albicans. In this contribution, a terpyridine-based ligand bearing a thioether functionality is used to prepare a new cobalt(II) spin crossover complex: [Co(TerpyPhSMe)2](PF6)2 (1), where TerpyPhSMe is 4′-(4-methylthiophenyl)-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine. Its structure, determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, reveals a mer coordination of the tridentate terpyridine ligands, leading to a tetragonally compressed octahedron. Intermolecular interactions in the crystal lattice freeze the complex in the high spin state in the solid state at all temperatures, as indicated by magnetometry and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectra. When dissolved in acetonitrile, however, temperature dependent electronic, 1H-NMR and EPR spectra highlight an entropy-driven spin crossover transition, whose thermodynamics parameters have been determined. This is the first report of a cobalt(II) SCO complex featuring a thioether group, allowing its implementation in chemically grown bistable monolayers and may open important perspectives for the use of such systems in molecular spintronics. This work investigated the spin states of the cobalt(II) complexes [Co(L1)2](X)2 (1·X; L1 = 4′-(4-N,N′-diphenylaminophenyl)-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine, X = PF6, BPh4) and [Co(L2)2](X)2 (2·X; L2 = 4′-(4-N,N′-dimethylaminophenyl)-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine, X = PF6, BPh4) in the solid state and in solution. In the solid state, 1·PF6 and 2·PF6, both containing smaller PF6− counter anions, showed gradual spin-crossover. In contrast, 1·BPh4 and 2·BPh4 remained in the high-spin state over the temperature range of 5–400 K due to a lower degree of molecular cooperativity. Each of the cobalt(II) complexes exhibited effects of temperature and concentration on their absorption spectra that were related to the spin states in various organic solvents. Valence tautomeric complexes (VT) are promising systems for creating molecular devices. From this viewpoint, valence tautomeric complexes with a hysteresis loop on the magnetic curve are of special interest as potential memory elements. The hysteresis loop is a consequence of retarded structural rearrangements which investigation is an actual problem. Recently, we have described a new VT transition taking place in a bis-dioxolene cobalt complex with imino-pyridine having a TEMPO substituent (A. A. Zolotukhin, et al., Inorg. Chem., 2017, 56, 14751-14754). Valence tautomeric transformation occurs with a hysteresis loop and is accompanied by a phase transition. The phase transition taking place during cooling is accompanied by crystal destruction. This fact makes it impossible to monitor the structural changes responsible for the hysteresis loop. The current research attempts to resolve this problem. A nickel compound of the same composition (TEMPO-imino-pyridine)Ni(3,6-DBSQ)2 was synthesized and characterized. It was established to be isostructural with the cobalt complex. It was used as an inert matrix for the dilution of the VT cobalt complex. The number of solid solutions with Co/Ni ratios of 1: 1, 1: 2, 1: 4, and 1: 8 was obtained. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements show that VT transformation with a hysteresis loop takes place in all solid solutions. The hysteresis loop is shifted to low temperatures primarily due to the shifting of its low-temperature boundary with dilution. The hysteresis width does not change significantly with dilution. DSC detected that transformations are accompanied by phase transitions at different temperatures at cooling and heating. The phase transition at the first cooling occurs at slightly lower temperatures compared with subsequent cycles. These temperatures correspond to the transition temperatures detected from the magnetic curves. The phase transition during the first cooling is accompanied by crystal destruction. Physical destruction takes place in the crystals of all solid solutions. X-ray diffraction powder patterns confirm that phase transition is accompanied by considerable reorganization of the crystal structure typical for the first order transitions. The unit cell volume of solid solutions is larger than that of pure complexes. Especially calculated crystal invariom indicated that the "lattice energy" in a solid solution is the lowest compared with that in "pure" nickel and cobalt complexes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fabrication of biofuels and chemicals from renewable biomass is highly desirable to replace petrochemicals. Hydrogenolysis of biomass derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a promising way to obtain furanic fuels. In this paper, we describe the preparation of a CoSi-PS catalyst derived from cobalt phyllosilicate using a silica sol as the silica source. CoSi-PS exhibited excellent catalytic performance for the hydrogenolysis reaction of HMF to produce liquid 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) biofuel. 100% conversion of HMF and 97.5% selectivity for DMF were achieved at 170 °C and 1.5 MPa H2 for 4 h, which was superior to most of the reported catalysts. The excellent performance can be attributed to the strong interactions between the metal and support, highly dispersed cobalt nanoparticles and the Lewis acid sites induced by the coordinated unsaturated Co(II) sites in phyllosilicate. This study explores the utilization of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), particularly those incorporating lanthanide-based elements for their fluorescence capabilities, to create an advanced barcode system. By exploiting the modular nature of MOFs, we have developed a material capable of dynamic information encoding and robust against counterfeiting efforts. We introduce a novel barcode prototype that exhibits visible color shifts and fluorescence modulation when exposed to a specific sequence of chemical and thermal stimuli. The barcode is composed of MOF-808, which is modified with transition metals like iron or cobalt, and europium cations. These components are embedded within polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to form a composite. This embedding process ensures that the MOF particles remain reactive to specific trigger molecules, enabling a distinct read-out sequence. The decoding process, involving exposure to ammonia, heating at 120 °C, and treatment with HCl, triggers observable changes in fluorescence and color, depending on the transition metal used. Our investigations with Eu,Co-MOF-808, and Eu,Fe-MOF-808 composites have resulted in the creation of a barcode prototype that demonstrates the feasibility of using europium-modified and unmodified transition metal modified MOF-808@PVDF composites for enhanced security applications. Transforming current complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technology to fabricate memory chips and microprocessors into environmentally friendlier electronics requires the development of new approaches to resource- and energy-efficient electron transport and switching materials. Metal and multi-metal oxide layers play a key role in high-end technical applications. However, these layers are commonly produced through high-energy and high-temperature procedures. Herein, we demonstrate our first attempts to obtain stimuli-responsive mixed-metal oxide thin films from solution-processed molecular precursors under milder conditions. The molecular compounds of interest were prepared by one-pot reactions of a CoII carboxylate complex, triethylamine (Et3N), N-butyldiethanolamine (H2bda), and a hexanuclear complex [Ce6O4(OH)4(piv)12] (Hpiv = pivalic acid) or [Zr6O4(OH)4(ib)12(H2O)]·3Hib (Hib = isobutyric acid) in acetonitrile solution. The resulting charge-neutral, heterometallic coordination compounds display a ligand-supported pentanuclear {Ce IV3 Co III2 } core (in 1) and a dodecanuclear {Zr IV6 Co II6 } core (in 2), exhibiting thermal stability up to ca. 100 °C in air. Compound 2 was deposited and analyzed on Au(111) and SiO2/Si(100) surfaces to explore its potential as a single-molecule precursor for the preparation of atomically precise, complex mixed-metal oxide thin films. We have prepared a bis(compartmental) Mannich base ligand H4L (1,4,8,11-tetraaza-1,4,8,11-tetrakis(2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-5-methylbenzyl)cyclotetradecane) specifically designed to obtain bis(TMIILnIII) tetranuclear complexes (TM = transition metal). In this regard, we have succeeded in obtaining three new complexes of the formula [Zn2(μ-L)(μ-OAc)Dy2(NO3)2]·[Zn2(μ-L)(μ-OAc)Dy2(NO3)(OAc)]·4CHCl3·2MeOH (1) and [TM2(μ-H2L)2(μ-succinate)Ln2(NO3)2] (NO3)2·2H2O·6MeOH (TMII = Zn, LnIII = Dy (2); TMII = Co, LnIII = Dy (3)). Compound 1 contains two different bis(ZnDy) tetranuclear molecules that cocrystallize in the structure, in which acetato bridging ligands connect the ZnII and DyIII ions within each ZnDy subunit. This compound does not exhibit slow magnetic relaxation at zero field, but it is activated in the presence of an applied dc magnetic field and/or by Dy/Y magnetic dilution, showing two relaxation processes corresponding to each of the two different bis(ZnDy) units found in the structure. As revealed by the theoretical calculations, magnetic relaxation in 1 is single-ion in origin and takes place through the first excited state of each DyIII ion. When using the succinato dicarboxylate bridging ligand instead of acetate, compounds 2 and 3 were serendipitously formed, which have a closed structure with the succinate anion bridging two ZnDy subunits belonging to two different ligands. It should be noted that only compound 2 exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization in the absence of an external magnetic field. According to experimental and theoretical data, 2 relaxes through the second excited Kramers doublet (Ueff = 342 K). In contrast, 3 displays field-induced SMM behaviour (Ueff = 203 K). However, the Co/Zn diluted version of this compound 3Zn shows slow relaxation at zero field (Ueff = 347 K). Ab initio theoretical calculations clearly show that the weak ferromagnetic coupling between CoII and DyIII ions is at the origin of the lack of slow relaxation of this compound at zero field. Compound 2 and its diluted analogues 2Y and 3Zn show hysteresis loops at very low temperature, thus confirming their SMM behaviour. Finally, compounds 1 and 2 show DyIII based emission even at room temperature that, in the case of 2, allows us to extract the splitting of the ground 6H15/2 term, which matches reasonably well with theoretical calculations. The advancement of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high performance is crucial across various sectors, notably in space exploration. This advancement hinges on the development of innovative cathode materials. Our research is dedicated to pioneering a new category of cathodes using fluorinated multimetallic materials, with a specific focus on diverging from the traditional Ni, Co, and Mn-based NMC chemistries by substituting nickel and manganese with copper and iron which are more sustainable elements. Our goal is also to enhance the robustness of cathodes upon cycling by substituting oxygen with fluorine as the metal-ligand. To achieve this, an intimate composite blend of CuF2 and FeF3, through the multimetallic template fluorination (MMTF) methodology using a layered double hydroxide (LDH) as a precursor has been designed. Each of these components was carefully selected for its distinct attributes, including high redox potential, elevated energy density, substantial theoretical capacity, and improved cyclability. The composition denoted as (Cu1.5Co0.5)2+(Fe0.75Al0.25)3+ has been selected for fluorination because it maximizes Fe3+ and Cu2+ amount in the screened LDHs. Subsequently, this particular LDH was fluorinated through solid-gas fluorination at different temperatures (200, 350, and 500 °C) using gaseous molecular fluorine (F2). A comprehensive characterization of these materials using various techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), 57Fe Mössbauer spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), and inductively coupled plasma analyses (ICP-AES) was conducted, and the evolution of LDH upon fluorination has revealed an intermediate porous texture particularly sensitive to hydration. Two original crystallographic phases are else obtained by fluorination: one formed by the hydration of the amorphous intermediate compound: Cu3Fe1.5Al0.5F12(H2O)12 an anti-perovskite structure and another stabilized through the combination of solid gas fluorination and LDH precursor yielding an original CoFeF5-type phase. Raman operando during cyclic voltammetry measurement applied on a sample fluorinated at 500 °C and used as a cathode in front of lithium metal was finally conducted to validate redox activity and mechanism. Hydroformylation is one of the most important homogeneous reactions in industrial production. Herein, a density functional theory (DFT) method was employed to investigate two proposed reaction mechanisms of hydroformylation catalyzed by cationic cobalt(II) complexes, the carbonyl dissociative mechanism and the associative mechanism. The calculated results showed that the heterolytic H2 activation is the rate-determining step for both the dissociative mechanism and the associative mechanism, with energy barriers of 26.8 kcal mol−1 and 40.5 kcal mol−1, respectively. Meanwhile, the regioselectivity, the spin multiplicity of the catalyst and the substituent effects on the reaction were also investigated. The most stable cobalt(II) catalyst has a doublet state and the linear aldehyde is the dominant product. In addition, it was found that the energy barrier of the reaction decreased when the electron density of the Co center of the catalyst was increased by changing the ligand. The catalytic activity of the catalyst was proposed to be the best when the PEt2 group of the ligand is replaced by the P(tBu)2 group. This study might not only provide new insights for hydroformylation catalyzed by cobalt but also facilitate theory-guided design of novel transition metal catalysts for hydroformylation. Integrating interfacial molecular nanolayers (MNL) with inorganic nanolayers is of interest for understanding processing-structure/chemistry correlations in hybrid nanolaminates. Here, we report the synthesis of Co/biphenyldithiol (BPDT)/Co nanolayer sandwiches by metal sputter-deposition and molecular sublimation. The density and surface roughness of the Co layers deposited on the native oxide are invariant with the Ar pressure pAr during deposition. In contrast, the Co layer roughness rCo deposited on top of the BPDT MNL increases with pAr, and correlates with a higher degree of Co oxidation. Increased roughening is attributed to MNL-accentuated self-shadowing of low mobility Co atoms at high pAr, which consequently increases Co oxidation. These results indicating MNL-induced effects on the morphology and chemistry of the inorganic layers should be of importance for tailoring nanolayered hybrid interfaces and laminates. While platinum(II)-based drugs continue to be employed in cancer treatments, the escalating occurrence of severe side effects has spurred researchers to explore novel sources for potential therapeutic agents. Notably, cobalt(III) has emerged as a subject of considerable interest due to its ubiquitous role in human physiology. Several studies investigating the anticancer effects of Salphen complexes derived from cobalt (III) have unveiled intriguing antiproliferative properties. In a bid to enhance our understanding of this class of compounds, we synthesized and characterized two novel half Salphen cobalt(III) complexes. Both compounds exhibited notable stability, even in the presence of physiologically relevant concentrations of glutathione. The application of spectroscopic and computational methodologies unravelled their interactions with duplex and G4-DNAs, suggesting an external binding affinity for these structures, with preliminary indications of selectivity trends. Importantly, antiproliferative assays conducted on 3D cultured SW-1353 cancer cells unveiled a compelling anticancer activity at low micromolar concentrations, underscoring the potential therapeutic efficacy of this novel class of cobalt(III) complexes. Carbon substituted cobalt bis(dicarbollide) alkyl halides [(1-X-(CH2)n-1,2-C2B9H10)(1,2-C2B9H11)-3,3′-Co]Me4N (X = Br, I; n = 1–3) are prepared in high yields (>90%) from their corresponding alcohols without side skeletal substitutions. These species offer access to the synthesis of aromatic cobalt bis(dicarbollide) amines, however only for particular terminal halogen substitution, the propylene pendant arm, and under appropriately controlled reaction conditions. Thus, the compounds substituted at cage carbon atoms with a propylene linker and terminal aromatic amine groups could be prepared. In other cases, numerous irregular reaction pathways occur, undoubtedly as a consequence of the bulky anionic boron cage in close proximity to the reaction site. Among them, an unusual intramolecular hydroboration forming rigidified carbon-to-boron bridged isomeric anions with an asymmetric structure that correspond to formulae [(1,8′-μ-C2H4)-(1,2-C2B9H10)(1′,2′-C2B9H10)-3,3′-Co]− and [(1,7′-μ-C2H4)-(1,2-C2B9H10)(1′,2′-C2B9H10)-3,3′-Co]− is described herein and the former isomer is structurally characterized. This product with a restrained geometry is widely accessible through nucleophile and/or thermally induced decomposition of (pseudo)halides attached to the cage via an ethylene linker. Surprisingly enough, also doubly bridged isomeric species [(1,8-μ-C2H4-1,2-C2B9H9)2-3,3′-Co]− and [(1,7-μ-C2H4-1,2-C2B9H9)2-3,3′-Co]− are available in good yield using these methods. Furthermore, other more typical side reactions are discussed, i.e. nucleophilic reactions of propyl halides with Me3N formed apparently by disproportionation of Me4N+ at higher temperatures or with pyridine used as a base. The hydrogen evolution reaction is an important process for energy storage. The six-coordinate cobalt complex [CoIII(L1−)(LH)]2+ (LH = N-(4-amino-6-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)benzamidine) was found to catalyze photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In this work, we performed density functional calculations to obtain the reduction potentials and the proton-transfer free energy of possible intermediates to determine the preferred pathways for proton reduction. The mechanism involves the metal-based reduction of Co(III) to Co(II) before the protonation at the amidinate N on the pyridinyl-substituted diaminotriazine benzamidinate ligand L1− to form [CoII(LH)(LH)]2+. Essentially, the subsequent electron transfer is not metal-based reduction, but rather ligand-based reduction to form [CoII(LH)(LH˙1−)]1+. Through a proton-coupled electron transfer process, the cobalt hydride [CoIIH(LH)(LH2˙)]1+ is formed as the key intermediate for hydrogen evolution. As the cobalt hydride complex is coordinatively saturated, a structural change is required when the hydride on Co is coupled with the proton on pyridine. Notably, the redox-active nature of the ligand results in the low acidity of the protonated pyridine moiety of LH2˙, which impedes its function as a proton relay. Our findings suggest that separating the proton relay fragment from the electron reservoir fragment of the redox-active ligand is preferred for fully utilizing both features in catalytic H2 evolution. Transition metal complexes exhibiting selective toxicity towards a broad range of cancer types are highly desirable as potential anticancer agents. Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization, and cytotoxicity studies of six new mixed-ligand cobalt(III) complexes of general formula [Co(B)2(L)](ClO4)2 (1–6), where B is a N,N-donor phenanthroline base, namely, 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1, 2), dipyrido[3,2-d:2′,3′-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 3, 4), and dipyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c]phenazine (dppz in 5, 6), and L is the monoanion of 8-hydroxyquinoline (HQ in 1, 3, 5) and 5-chloro-7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinoline (CQ in 2, 4, 6). The X-ray single crystal structures of complexes 1 and 2 as PF6− salts revealed a distorted octahedral CoN5O coordination environment. Complexes demonstrated good stability in an aqueous buffer medium and in the presence of ascorbic acid as a reductant. Cytotoxicity studies using a panel of nine cancer cell lines showed that complex 6, with the dppz and CQ ligands, was significantly toxic against most cancer cell types, yielding IC50 values in the range of 2 to 14 μM. Complexes 1, 3, and 5, containing the HQ ligand, displayed lower toxicity compared to their CQ counterparts. The phenanthroline complexes demonstrated marginal toxicity towards the tested cell lines, while the dpq complexes exhibited moderate toxicity. Interestingly, all complexes demonstrated negligible toxicity towards normal HEK-293 kidney cells (IC50 > 100 μM). The observed cytotoxicity of the complexes correlated well with their lipophilicities (dppz > dpq > phen). The cytotoxicity of complex 6 was comparable to that of the clinical drug cisplatin under similar conditions. Notably, neither the HQ nor the CQ ligands alone demonstrated noticeable toxicity against any of the tested cell lines. The Annexin-V-FITC and DCFDA assays revealed that the cell death mechanism induced by the complexes involved apoptosis, which could be attributed to the metal-assisted generation of reactive oxygen species. Overall, the dppz complex 6, with its remarkable cytotoxicity against a broad range of cancer cells and negligible toxicity toward normal cells, holds significant potential for cancer chemotherapeutic applications. Cobalt dioxolenes are a well-known class of switchable coordination compounds showing intramolecular electron transfer, which is always accompanied by a spin state change at the cobalt center. Here, we present the first example of thermally switchable cobalt bis-dioxolenes where intramolecular electron transfer seems to take place, but the spin state change is suppressed. This leads to the detection of thermal transition between a common ls-CoIII(SQ˙−)(Cat2−) and an extremely rare ls-CoII(SQ˙−)2 electronic state (hs – high-spin, ls – low-spin, SQ˙− – benzosemiquinonate(1−) radical and Cat2− – catecholate(2−)). Parallel to the present work, a similar work but on cobalt mono-dioxolenes has just appeared (Chem. Eur. Encapsulating cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) within the coordinating polymer poly-4-vinylpyridine (P4VP) results in a catalyst–polymer composite (CoPc–P4VP) that selectively reduces CO2 to CO at fast rates at low overpotential. In previous studies, we postulated that the enhanced selectively for CO over H2 production within CoPc–P4VP compared to the parent CoPc complex is due to a combination of primary, secondary, and outer-coordination sphere effects imbued by the encapsulating polymer. In this work, we perform in situ electrochemical X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements to study the oxidation state and coordination environment of Co as a function of applied potential for CoPc, CoPc–P4VP, and CoPc with an axially-coordinated py, CoPc(py). Using in situ X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) we provide experimental support for our previous hypothesis that Co changes from a 4-coordinate square-planar geometry in CoPc to a mostly 5-coordinate species in CoPc(py) and CoPc–P4VP. The coordination environment of CoPc–P4VP is potential-independent but pH-dependent, suggesting that the axial coordination of pyridyl groups in P4VP to CoPc is modulated by the protonation of the polymer. Finally, we show that at low potential the oxidation state of Co in the 4-coordinate CoPc is different from that in the 5-coordinate CoPc(py), suggesting that the primary coordination sphere modulates the site of reduction (metal-centered vs. ligand centered) under catalytically-relevant conditions. Treatment of unsubstituted and substituted phthalonitrile (1a–d) with appropriate equivalents of sodium methoxide and ammonia afforded the corresponding 1,3-diiminoisoindolines (2a–d), which were converted to cobalt(III)-containing penta-dentate "helmet"-type phthalogens (3a–d) by the reaction with CoCl2·6H2O as templating agent in the inert solvent 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. The identities of 2a–d and 3a–d were established by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). A computational study was performed to determine the most stable tautomeric form of 2a–c in the gas phase. The solid-state structures of 2b and 2c were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) studies to confirm their existence in the stereoisomeric anti-form, which is aligned with quantum chemical computations. SC-XRD studies of 3a and 3b revealed a slightly distorted octahedral geometry around the CoIII ions which are coordinated by five N-donor atoms and one extra co-ligand, resulting in a coordination environment of CoN5Cl (3a) and CoN5O (3b), respectively. The thermal stabilities of 2a–d and 3a–d were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in the temperature range of 40–500 °C and 40–800 °C, respectively, revealing that 3a–d were converted to the parent cobalt(II)-containing phthalocyanines (4a–d), which was verified independently by furnace heating experiments. Moreover, the electrochemical behavior of 3a was studied exemplarily for the phthalogens by cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. Among transition metals, cobalt ions exhibit superior catalytic activity in the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) degradation of pollutants. However, practical application is hindered by their high rate of ion leaching and the propensity for particle reunion issues. In this study, a novel cobalt metal–organic framework catalyst, denoted as CUST-565 ([Co3(BTB)2(BIPY)2]·4.5H2O·DMA), was synthesized via a one-step solvothermal method. The obtained crystal was employed as a catalyst to activate PMS for degrading two pollutants, methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RhB), in wastewater. The catalyst demonstrated efficacy in PMS, achieving 97% degradation of MO and 98% degradation of RhB within 30 min at an initial concentration of 20.0 mg L−1. Additionally, various factors affecting dye degradation, including PMS dosage, catalyst dosage, temperature, initial pH, and coexisting anions, were investigated. Radical quenching experiments confirmed the presence of sulfate radicals (SO4˙−), hydroxyl radicals (HO˙), superoxide radicals (O2˙−), and singlet oxygen (1O2) in the system. After four cycles, CUST-565 retained its ability to catalytically degrade approximately 80% of the pollutants. These observed stability and reusability properties, corroborated by a series of characterization analyses before and after use, suggest that CUST-565 exhibits reliable performance. Valence tautomerism (VT) involves the stimulated reversible intramolecular electron transfer between a redox-active metal and ligand. Dinuclear cobalt complexes bridged by bis(dioxolene) ligands can undergo thermally-induced VT with access to {CoIII-cat-cat-CoIII}, {CoIII-cat-SQ-CoII} and {CoII-SQ-SQ-CoII} states (cat2− = catecholate, SQ˙− = semiquinonate, CoIII refers to low spin CoIII, CoII refers to high spin CoII). The resulting potential for two-step VT interconversions offers increased functionality over mononuclear examples. In this study, the bis(dioxolene) ligand 3,3′,4,4′-tetrahydroxy-5,5′-dimethoxy-benzaldazine (thMH4) was paired with Mentpa (tpa = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine, n = 0–3 corresponds to methylation at 6-position of the pyridine rings) to afford [{Co(Mentpa)}2(thM)](PF6)2 (1a, n = 0; 2a, n = 2; 3a, n = 3). Structural, magnetic susceptibility and spectroscopic data show that 1a and 3a remain in the temperature invariant {CoIII-cat-cat-CoIII} and {CoII-SQ-SQ-CoII} forms in the solid state, respectively. In contrast, 2a exhibits incomplete thermally-induced VT between these two tautomeric forms via the mixed {CoIII-cat-SQ-CoII} tautomer. In solution, room temperature electronic absorption spectra are consistent with the assignments from the solid-state, with VT observed only for 2a. From electrochemistry, the proximity of the two 1e−-processes for the thMn− ligand indicates weak electronic communication between the two dioxolene units, supporting the potential for a two-step VT interconversion in thMn− containing complexes. Comparison of the redox potentials of the Co and thMn− processes suggests that only 2a has these processes in sufficient proximity to afford the thermally-induced VT observed experimentally. Density functional theory calculations are consistent with the prerequisite energy ordering for a two-step transition for 2a, and temperature invariant {CoIII-cat-cat-CoIII} and {CoII-SQ-SQ-CoII} states for 1a and 3a, respectively. This work presents the third example, and the first formally conjugated example, of a bridging bis(dioxolene) ligand that can afford two-step VT in a Co complex, suggesting new possibilities towards applications based on multistep switching. Monomeric [Co(SDZ)2phen] (1) and [Co(SDZ)(bq)Cl] (2) complexes (SDZ = sulfadiazine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, and bq = 2,2′-biquinoline) have been synthesized and characterized. X-ray diffraction studies indicate that SDZ acts as a bidentate ligand coordinating through the sulfonamide and the pyrimidine N atoms in both compounds. In complex 1, the coordination sphere consists of two SDZ ligands and a bis-chelating phen ligand, giving rise to a CoN6 coordination sphere. On the other hand, 2 has a CoN4Cl core, with two N-atoms from SDZ and two from the bq ligand. Both compounds have been studied by dc and ac magnetometry and shown to display slow magnetic relaxation under an optimum external dc field (1 kOe) at low temperatures. Moreover, compound 2 displays long range magnetic ordering provided by spin-canted antiferromagnetism, which has been characterized by further field-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements, FC/ZFC curves, hysteresis loops and frequency-independent ac curves. The signs of the calculated D parameters, positive in 1 and negative in 2, have been rationalized according to the two lowest-lying transitions in the orbital energy diagrams derived from ab initio ligand field theory (AILFT). In a subsequent attempt to reveal the possible hidden zero-field SMM behaviour, Ni(II)-based 3 and Co(II)-doped Ni(II)-based (with a Ni : Co ratio of 0.9 : 0.1) heterometallic compound 2Ni were synthesized. This study aims to compare the effect of substituents (position and number) and reduced graphene oxide on the supercapacitive properties of cobalt(II) phthalocyanines. For this purpose, three new tetra- and octa-substituted cobalt(II) phthalocyanines bearing 9H-carbazol-2-yloxy groups on peripheral or non-peripheral positions (1–3) were synthesized. The characterization of the resultant cobalt(II) phthalocyanines was carried out by applying several spectroscopic approaches. The newly synthesized macromolecules were used for the functionalization of reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The obtained nanocomposites (rGO-(1–3)) were utilized for the modification of Ni foam (NiF) electrodes through a facile one-step electrodeposition strategy performed for electrochemical supercapacitor applications. Simultaneous polymerization of the cobalt phthalocyanines and electrochemically reduction of graphene oxide led to the formation of a fabricating layer on the surface of the NiF electrode. The resulting electropolymerized films were characterized by Raman, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), and Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) spectroscopic techniques as well as electrochemical methods. The prepared electrodes possessed superior electrochemical activities owing to the synergistic effect of the cobalt(II) phthalocyanines and rGO. All the modified electrodes displayed high supercapacitaive properties and the highest activity was obtained for the NiF/rGO2-1 electrode. The NiF/rGO2-1 electrode exhibited higher specific capacitance (655.2 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1) than NiF/1 (338.0 F g−1). Additionally, a specific capacitance of 85.2% was obtained for NiF/rGO2-1 electrode after 3000 charge–discharge cycles. As a result, all the prepared metallophthalocyanines-reduced graphene oxide can be considered alternative agents to develop high performance-next-generation energy storage devices. Crystallographic investigations of eight homoleptic N,N′-dimethylpropyleneurea (dmpu) coordinated metal ions in the solid state, [Mg(dmpu)5]I2 (1), [Ca(dmpu)6]I2 (2), [Ca(dmpu)6](ClO4)2 (3), [Ca(dmpu)6](CF3SO3)2 (4), [Sr(dmpu)6](CF3SO3)2 (5), [Ba(dmpu)6](CF3SO3)2 (6), [Sc(dmpu)6]I3 (7), and [Pr(dmpu)6]I(I3)2 (8), and the complex [CoBr2(dmpu)2] (9) as well as the structures of the dmpu coordinated calcium, strontium, barium, scandium(III) and cobalt(II) ions and the cobalt(II) bromide complex in dmpu solution as determined by EXAFS are reported. The methyl groups in the dmpu molecule are close to the oxygen donor atom, causing steric restrictions, and making dmpu space-demanding at coordination to metal ions. The large volume required by the dmpu ligand at coordination contributes to crowdedness around the metal ion with often lower coordination numbers than for oxygen donor ligands without such steric restrictions. The crowdedness is seen in M⋯H distances equal to or close to the sum of the van der Waals radii. To counteract the space-demand at coordination, the dmpu molecule has an unusual ability to increase the M–O–C bond angle to facilitate as large coordination numbers as possible. M–O–C bond angles in the range of 125–170° are reported depending on the crowdedness caused by the coordination figure and the M–O bond distance. All reported structures of dmpu coordinated metal ions in both the solid state and dmpu solution are summarized to study the relationship between the M–O–C bond angle and the crowdedness around the metal ion. However, highly symmetric complexes seem to be favoured in the solid state due to favourable lattice energies. As a result, the dmpu coordinated lanthanoid(III) ions are octahedral in the solid state, while they, except lutetium, are seven-coordinate in the dmpu solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of monocapped cobalt(II) tris-pyrazoloximates was obtained through the template condensation of the corresponding pyrazoloxime, phenylboronic acid and a suitable cobalt(II) halogenide. Comparing 3-acetylpyrazoloxime versus its methine-containing homolog, the former produced cobalt(II) clathrochelates in substantially higher yields due to the electron donating effect of the methyl substituent, increasing the N-donor ability of its oxime group. Their less N-donor analog with the electron acceptor trifluoromethyl group did not form cobalt(II) complexes of this type. In all their solvent-free and solvent-containing crystals, the encapsulated cobalt(II) ion adopted a high-spin state, as gauged by the Co–N bond lengths of 2.112(4)–2.188(9) Å, and was located almost in the center of its CoN6-coordination polyhedron. Their CoN6-polyhedra had an almost ideal trigonal-prismatic (TP) geometry with distortion angles ϕ below 4°. This TP-like geometry was assisted by hydrogen bonding between their NH groups and the apical counterion. The absence of methyl groups makes them close to an ideal TP. In contrast, stronger N–H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds occurred in the methyl-containing complex, while the Co–N bond lengths stayed the same at 2.144(2) Å on average. In its solvates with benzene, chloroform and acetone, there is a clear tendency for ϕ to decrease from 2.7(3)° to 0.47(13)°. The comparable effects of the ribbed methyl substituents, the cross-linking counterion and the lattice solvent on their molecular geometry were observed; the larger the distortions from an ideal TP geometry, the stronger the hydrogen bonds to the corresponding apical halogenide anion. The analysis of the experimental AC- and DC-magnetometry data for their fine-crystalline samples suggests that the passing from the derivative of the methyl-substituted synthon to that of its methine-containing homolog caused a substantial decrease in the magnetic susceptibility value χT and an increase in the QTM contribution to the magnetic relaxation. Reduction of nitro-compounds to amines is one of the most often employed and challenging catalytic processes in the fine and bulk chemical industry. Herein, we present two series of mononuclear homoleptic and heteroleptic Co(III) complexes, i.e., [Co(LNS)3] and [Co(LNS)2L1L2]x+, respectively (x = 0 or 1, LNS = pyrimidine- or pyridine-thioamidato, L1/L2 = thioamidato, phosphine or pyridine), which successfully catalyze the transformation of nitroarenes to anilines by methylhydrazine. The catalytic reaction can be accomplished for a range of electronically and sterically diverse nitroarenes, using mild experimental conditions and low catalyst loadings, resulting in the corresponding anilines in high yields, with high chemoselectivity, and no side-products. Electronic and steric properties of the ligands play pivotal role in the catalytic efficacy of the respective complexes. In particular, complexes bearing ligands of high hemilability/lability and being capable of stabilizing lower metal oxidation-states exhibit the highest catalytic activity. Mechanistic investigations suggest the participation of the Co(III) complexes in two parallel reaction pathways: (a) coordination-induced activation of methylhydrazine and (b) reduction of nitroarenes to anilines by methylhydrazine, through the formation of Co(I) and Co-hydride intermediates. The creation of magnetically switchable materials that concurrently incorporate spin crossover (SCO) and a structural phase transition (SPT) presents a significant challenge in materials science. In this study, we prepared four structurally related cobalt(II)-based SCO compounds: two one-dimensional (1D) chains of {[(enbzp)Co(μ-L)](ClO4)2·sol}n (L = bpee, sol = 2MeOH·H2O, 1; L = bpea, sol = none, 2; enbzp = N,N′-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis(1-phenyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)methanimine); bpee = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene; and bpea = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) and their discrete segments, [{(enbzp)Co}2(μ-L)](ClO4)4·2MeOH (L = bpee, 3; L = bpea, 4). In all of these complexes, each Co(II) center is equatorially chelated by the planar tetradentate ligand enbzp and connected to a chain or dinuclear structure through bpee or bpea ligands along its axial direction. All of the complexes, including their desolvated phases, displayed overall incomplete and gradual SCO properties. Interestingly, the desolvated phase of 1 exhibited an additional non-spin magnetic transition characterized by wide room-temperature hysteresis (>40 K), which was reversible and rate-dependent, showcasing the synergy between SCO and SPT manifested through slow kinetics. We discuss the possible reasons for the distinct features and our findings demonstrate that the combination of a rigid polymeric framework with flexible substituents holds promise for achieving synergy between SCO and SPT. In this work, we investigate the vapor-assisted synthesis of the metal–organic framework MOF-74 starting from three metal oxides (ZnO, CoO, and MgO). Depending on the nature of the added vapor (H2O, DMF, DMSO), the metal oxide, and the temperature, the outcome of the reaction can be directed towards the desired porous phase. Ex situ and in situ XRD measurements reveal the formation of an intermediate phase during the reaction of MgO with H4dobdc, while the MOF-74 phase forms directly for ZnO and CoO. The reduced CO2 uptake of the resulting materials compared to solvothermally prepared MOFs might be offset by the convenience of the presented route and the promise of a high space time yield. Transition metals play a significant role in energy storage applications mainly as electrode materials in supercapacitors. In this work, triple hydroxide/oxyhydroxide nanosheets of a nickel, cobalt and manganese (NCM) composite were electrochemically deposited on carbon cloth (CC) and used as electrode materials in supercapacitors. In a three electrode system the composite delivered a specific capacitance of 707 F g−1 at a current density of 3 A g−1 which retained its stability even at a higher current density of 50 A g−1. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was assembled and characterized using NCM as the positive electrode, activated carbon as the negative electrode and Whatman filter paper soaked in KOH as the separator. The device operated in a working potential window of 1.75 V and it delivered a power density of 13.12 kW kg−1 and an energy density of 23.7 W h kg−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spinel-type inorganic pigments with intensive color and chemical/thermal stability are showing extensive applications that could be further broadened by color manipulation and improvement of the material properties through nanosizing. In this study, we report the supercritical hydrothermal synthesis of nonstoichiometric spinel-type cobalt gallate nanoparticles (Co–Ga NPs) with controlled color. Without the conventional calcination procedure, NPs with greenish-blue, blue, and yellowish-green colors were synthesized from precursor solutions at pH 7, 9, and 11, respectively, with a low Co/Ga molar ratio of 0.25. X-ray diffraction, scanning/transmission electron microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy methods suggest that the products were spinel-type cobalt gallate NPs with high crystallinity and a nonstoichiometric composition. Based on an X-ray absorption fine structure investigation, the prepared nonstoichiometric Co–Ga NPs were found to have different cationic configurations from stoichiometric CoGa2O4 produced by a solid-state reaction during calcination. Meanwhile, the degrees of distortions at tetrahedral and octahedral sites in the NPs were evaluated by Raman spectroscopy. In particular, nonstoichiometric Co–Ga NPs with a blue color were prepared without calcination for the first time and were found to have lower tetrahedral cobalt occupancy but comparable octahedral cobalt occupancy and larger polyhedral distortions at tetrahedral sites when compared to calcined CoGa2O4. We also discuss strategies that could realize Co–Ga NPs with a more brilliant blue color using the present technique based on an investigation of the growth process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A cobalt(II) complex and manganese(II) coordination polymer, formulated as [Co2(H2btca)(mbpy)4][H2btca]·4H2O (1) and {Mn2(btca)(mbpy)2(H2O)2}n (2) (H4btca = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid; mbpy = 4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridyl), constructed by mixed bipyridine-tetracarboxylic ligands were synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal structural analyses reveal that compound 1 is a discrete neutral binuclear molecule, while compound 2 is a two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer. The metal ions in these compounds are well isolated, with an intramolecular Co2+⋯Co2+ distance of 9.170 Å for 1 and Mn2+⋯Mn2+ separation of 10.984 and 11.164 Å for 2 due to the bulk tetracarboxylic linker. This isolation gives rise to a single-ion magnetism origin of the compounds. Magnetic studies reveal a large zero-field splitting parameter D of 82.6 cm−1 for 1, while a very small D of 0.42 cm−1 was observed for 2. Interestingly, dynamic ac magnetic measurements exhibited slow magnetic relaxation under the external dc field of the two compounds, revealing the field-supported single-ion magnet (SIM) of 1 and 2. The detailed theoretical calculations were further applied to understand the electronic structures, magnetic anisotropy, and relaxation dynamics in 1 and 2. Combined with our recently reported compound (Eur. J. Inorg. Bis(bidentate) and bis(tridentate) Co(III) complexes of N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine (heen), 2-[(2-aminoethyl)amino]ethan-1-olate (heen-H), or N-(2-chloroethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine (ceen) ligands have been synthesised, and a range of reaction conditions established for their syntheses by different routes. They can all be ultimately derived from (OC-6-12′)-[Co(heen)2(NO2)2]NO3 and provide access to the trans amine trans chloride nitrogen mustard complex, (OC-6-12′)-[Co(ceen)2(Cl)2]Cl. Although complex isomeric mixtures were obtained from the reaction of (OC-6-12′)-[Co(heen)2(NO2)2]NO3 under different reaction conditions, ultimately, the trans amine trans chlorido configuration around the Co(III) metal centre of the (OC-6-12′)-[Co(ceen)2(Cl)2]Cl complex was favoured. Hydrogen economy has emerged as a promising alternative to the current hydrocarbon economy. It involves harvesting renewable energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen and then further utilising clean hydrogen fuel for various applications. The rational exploration of advanced non-precious metal bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for efficient water splitting. Herein, an ultralow Ru-modified cobalt metal–organic framework (CoRu0.06-MOF/NF) two-dimensional nanosheet array bifunctional catalyst was fabricated through a strategy under mild experimental conditions. The obtained CoRu0.06-MOF/NF exhibited excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic activity and stability in alkaline media, with low overpotentials of 37 and 181 mV and significant durability for more than 95 and 110 h toward the HER and OER at 10 mA cm−2, respectively. The experimental results showed that the two-dimensional nanoarray structure had a large specific surface area and abundant exposed active sites. Additionally, ultralow Ru modification optimized the electronic structure and improved the conductivity of the cobalt metal–organic frameworks, thereby reducing the energy barrier of the rate-limiting step and accelerating the water splitting reaction. The molecular complexity of recently reported cobalt(III) polycyclic complexes, resulting from an intramolecular formal (2 + 2 + 3) cycloaddition reaction on an enediyne containing a lactone moiety, has prompted us to computationally review the mechanisms of cobalt cycloaddition reactions with γ-alkylidenebutenolide or γ-alkylidenebuterolactam as 2π partners. Computed mechanisms are compared, leading to either cobalt(III)- or cobalt(I)-spiro complexes depending of both the nature of the reaction (intra- vs. intermolecular pathway) and the nature of the 2π partner (γ-alkylidenebutenolide vs. γ-alkylidenebuterolactam). Cobalt carbonyl/nitrosyl complexes, (PPh3)(CO)2Co(NO) (1) and (PPh3)2(CO)Co(NO) (2), were obtained by reacting (CO)3Co(NO) with one equiv. and two equiv. of PPh3, respectively. The process of isoelectronic replacement of CO with NO+ resulted in the formation of a cationic complex {Co(NO)2}10 [(PPh3)2Co (NO)2][BF4] (3). Complex (PPh3)(SPh)Co(NO)2 (4), which contains a thiophenolate ligand, was synthesized by ligand exchange of complex 3 with [PPh4][SPh] in a 1: 1 molar ratio in THF solution. The addition of one equiv. of [PPh4][SPh] to complex 4 led to the formation of complex [PPh4][(SPh)2Co(NO)2] (5). The interconversions among complexes 1-5 were substantiated with the application of IR spectroscopy and X-ray single-crystal diffraction techniques. Notably, complex 4 exhibited commendable NOs (nitric oxide species: NO+/•NO/NO-) transfer capabilities in the presence of [Fe(TPP)Cl] (5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine iron(III) chloride).
