The pyrolysis of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has emerged as a promising route to synthesize carbon/metal oxide-based materials with diverse phase compositions, morphologies, sizes and surface areas. In this paper, 1,3,5-benzoic acid (BTC) and 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridinyl)-1-pyridine (TPP) were used as ligands to prepare a novel cobalt-based MOF (Co-MOF) which was used as a precursor to obtain five carbon-based materials at different temperatures (Co-C200/400/600/800/1000). Furthermore, five dyes were used as degradation targets to investigate the photocatalytic degradation performance of the title materials under UV light irradiation. Co-C1000 exhibited the best photocatalytic degradation performance for methyl orange (MO), and the degradation rate could reach 99.21%. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was attributed to narrower band-gaps and a synergistic effect originating from the well-aligned straddling band structures between Co/CoO/Co3O4 and C, also resulting in a faster interfacial charge transfer during the photocatalytic reaction. This study will aid in the development of photocatalysts generated from carbon-based materials via the pyrolysis transformation of MOFs, therefore greatly enhancing the photocatalytic performance. The commercialization of lithium–sulfur batteries is facing great challenges, such as the "shuttle effect" and the poor conductivity of sulfur and Li2S2/Li2S, so it is extremely important to design new separator-modified materials with fast charge transfer capability and effective immobilization of polysulfides (LiPSs) to facilitate their conversion to address these challenges. In this paper, we propose a simple way to synthesize NiCo2O4 nanospheres containing oxygen vacancies (OV-NiCo2O4 NSs) and thus modify the separator. The synthesized OV-NiCo2O4 NSs accelerated the conversion of LiPSs through strong chemical interactions. In addition, the introduction of oxygen vacancies provided more active sites for LiPSs, which improved the electron conduction rate and accelerated the ion transport. Based on the above advantages, the battery with an OV-NiCo2O4 modified separator showed excellent electrochemical performance (the initial capacity of the battery was 801 mA h g−1 at 0.5 C, the specific capacity of discharge was maintained at 695 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles, and the capacity retention rate was as high as 87%). Constructing a suitable heterojunction structure while maintaining a tight interface to promote the separation of photogenerated electrons is of great significance for improving the photocatalytic activity. In this paper, a new PANI/NH2-MIL-101(Fe) II-scheme heterojunction was prepared by a hydrothermal method. PANI with a porous structure was firstly obtained by the template method, and then PANI fragments were loaded on the surface of NH2-MIL-101(Fe) crystals under hydrothermal conditions to obtain a PANI/NH2-MIL-101(Fe) photocatalyst. The photocatalytic degradation of TC under simulated sunlight can reach 90% within an hour, and the maximum hydrogen evolution rate is 7040 μmol g−1 h−1 under visible light. The enhanced catalytic performance of PANI/NH2-MIL-101(Fe) was attributed to the appropriate matching of the VB and CB of PANI and NH2-MIL-101(Fe), and secondly, the coordination bonds formed between PANI and NH2-MIL-101(Fe) provided a channel for charge separation and transfer. Finally, a possible mechanism of the photocatalytic system was proposed through a free radical capture experiment and characterization analysis. More importantly, the experiment proved that the heterojunction formed by PANI and NH2-MIL-101(Fe) can achieve the effect of complementing each other, which provides a feasible idea and method for the design of efficient heterojunction photocatalysts. The impact of substituents at the 4- and 7-positions of 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamides on the photophysical properties of the ligands and their coordination compounds with the lanthanide triad--europium, gadolinium, and terbium--was analyzed. This study demonstrates how modification of the electronic nature of ligands through the incorporation of diverse functional groups affects the luminescence properties of their complexes. The introduction of various substituents leads to the appearance of intra-ligand or ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (CT) states. The highest luminescence efficiency was observed for LH·Eu(NO3)3 (Qin = 54.1% and QL = 9.6%), suggesting strong luminescence quenching of the CT state. It was found that a relatively low ΔE (-3000 cm-1) supports direct energy transfer from S1 to T1 bypassing the CT state, even though it is outside Reinhoudt's optimal range. Metal oxide composites with graphene/graphene oxide have increasingly gained popularity in enhancing the photocatalytic degradation of several existing harmful dyes. Moreover, identifying the role of carbon networks and their interactions in composite formation would assist in the design and development of photocatalysts. In the present study, we investigated the role of carbon networks in improving photocatalytic properties. Electronic structure analysis of cobalt oxide–graphene (C2)/graphene oxide (C3) nanocomposites using XAS suggested possible charge transfer from cobalt oxide nanoparticles to the carbon network during composite formation. The photocatalytic degradation of C3 towards phenol dye (1 × 10−3 M) was >50% and improved the degradation rate with k = 0.231 h−1.In the quest to understand the mechanism unfolding on its surface, in situ XAS under UV–visible irradiation was performed, which shed light on delayed excitonic recombination in the synthesized nanocomposites. This enabled hydroxy radicals (˙OH) to play a preeminent role in the cleavage of the phenol ring and its intermediaries. Based on these observations, a detailed mechanism for charge transfer occurring during nanocomposite formation and the mechanism involved in the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposite photocatalyst towards phenol degradation under the influence of UV–visible irradiation are discussed. The development of electrocatalysts that can maintain high reactivity and stability over a wide pH range during electrolysis reactions is essential for the realization of a clean hydrogen energy society. Herein, we report the synthesis of AuIr alloy nanoparticles (NPs) with an excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance over a wide pH range. The NPs were synthesized via an antisolvent crystallization-based method and maintained their small sizes regardless of adjustments in the ratio of the Au/Ir precursor. AuIr/C exhibited low overpotential and good long-term stability under acidic and alkaline conditions compared with the Ir/C and commercial RuO2. The development of semiconductor heterojunctions is a promising and yet challenging strategy to boost the performance in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. This paper describes the fabrication of a heterojunction photoanode by coupling α-Fe2O3 and g-C3N4via aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) followed by spin coating and air annealing. Enhanced PEC performance and stability are observed for the α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 heterojunction photoanode in comparison to pristine α-Fe2O3 and the reason is systematically discussed in this paper. Most importantly, the fabricated α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 film shows impressive stability, retaining more than 90% of the initial current over 12 h operating time. The excellent stability of the heterojunction photoanode is achieved due to the unique nanoflake structure of α-Fe2O3 induced by AACVD. This nanostructure promotes good adhesion with the g-C3N4 particles, as the particles tend to be trapped within the α-Fe2O3 valleys and eventually create strong and large interfacial contacts. This leads to improved separation of charge carriers at the α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 interface and suppression of charge recombination in the photoanode, which are confirmed by the transient decay time, charge transfer efficiency and electrochemical impedance analysis. Due to the slow reaction kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the electrolysis rate of water is greatly limited. Therefore, it is of great significance to study stable and efficient non-noble metal based electrocatalysts. In this paper, three-dimensional (3D) spherical V-NiFe LDH@Ni3S2 was developed by exquisitely decorating ultra-thin V-doped NiFe layered dihydroxide (NiFe-LDH) on Ni3S2 nanosheets supported by nickel foam (NF). It is worth mentioning that V-NiFe LDH@Ni3S2 exhibits an excellent electrocatalytic performance and only 178 mV overpotential is required in 1 M KOH to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Long-term chronoamperometry manifests its superior electrochemical stability. The combination of NiFe LDH and conductive substrate coupling can drastically afford abundant active sites and accelerate charge transfer, and V doping can markedly regulate the electronic structure. Therefore, the activity and durability of the electrocatalysts are greatly improved. This study may provide a new strategy for the preparation of efficient OER electrocatalysts. We previously reported that phenyl- and vinyl-silsesquioxanes (SQs), [RSiO1.5]8,10,12 (R = Ph or vinyl) functionalized with three or more conjugated moieties show red-shifted absorption- and emission features suggesting 3-D conjugation via a cage centered LUMOs. Corner missing [PhSiO1.5]7(OSiMe3)3 and edge opened, end capped [PhSiO1.5]8(OSiMe2)2 (double decker, DD) analogs also offer red shifted spectra again indicating 3-D conjugation and a cage centered LUMO. Copolymerization of DD [PhSiO1.5]8(OSiMevinyl)2 with multiple R–Ar–Br gives copolymers with emission red-shifts that change with degree of polymerization (DP), exhibit charge transfer to F4TNCQ and terpolymer averaged red-shifts suggesting through chain conjugation even with two (O–Si–O) end caps possibly via a cage centered LUMO. Surprisingly, ladder (LL) SQ, (vinylMeSiO2)[PhSiO1.5]4(O2SiMevinyl) copolymers offer emission red-shifts even greater for analogous copolymers requiring a different explanation. Here we assess the photophysical behavior of copolymers of a more extreme SQ form: the half cage [PhSiO1.5]4(OSiMe2Vinyl)4, Vy4HC SQs. We again see small red-shifted absorptions coupled with significant red-shifted emissions, even with just a half cage, thus further supporting the existence of pπ–dπ and/or σ*–π* conjugation through Si–O–Si bonds and contrary to most traditional views of Si–O–Si linked polymers. These same copolymers donate an electron to F4TCNQ generating the radical anion, F4TCNQ−. as further proof of conjugation. Column chromatographic separation of short from longer chain oligomers reveals a direct correlation between DP and emission λmax red-shifts as another indication of conjugation. Further, one- and two-photon absorption and emission spectroscopy reveals multiple excited fluorescence-emitting states in a violation of Kasha's rule wherein emission occurs only from the lowest excited state. Traditional modeling studies again find HOMO LUMO energy levels residing only on the aromatic co-monomers rather than through Si–O–Si bonds as recently found in related polymers. To develop hydrogen energy production and address the issues of global warming, inexpensive, effective, and long-lasting transition metal-based electrocatalysts for the synthesis of hydrogen are crucial. Herein, a porous electrocatalyst NiMo/Ni/NF was successfully constructed by a two-step electrodeposition process, and was used in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of electrocatalytic water decomposition. NiMo nanoparticles were coated on porous Ni/NF grown on nickel foam (NF), leading to a resilient porous structure with enhanced conductivity for efficient charge transfer, as well as distinctive threedimensional channels for quick electrolyte diffusion and gas release. Notably, the low overpotential (42 mV) and fast kinetics (Tafel slope of 44 mV dec-1) at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH solution demonstrate the excellent HER activity of the electrode, which was superior to that of recently reported non-noble metal-based catalysts. Additionally, NiMo/Ni/NF showed extraordinary catalytic durability in stability tests at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for 70 h. The porous structure catalyst and the electrodeposition-electrocatalysis technique examined in this study offer new approaches for the advancement of the electrocatalysis field because of these benefits. The reaction of Pd(OAc)2 with (Z)-5-arylidene-4-(4H)-imidazolones (2a-e) and (Z)-4-arylidene-5(4H)- thiazolones (3a-e) in trifluoroacetic acid results in the corresponding orthopalladated dinuclear complexes (4a-e, imidazolones; 11a-d, thiazolones) with trifluoroacetate bridges through regioselective C-H activation at the ortho position of the 4-arylidene group. Compound 4e, which contains an imidazolone substituted at 2- and 4-positions of the arylidene ring with methoxide groups and exhibits strong push-pull charge transfer, is an excellent precursor for the synthesis of fluorescent complexes with green yellowish emission and remarkable quantum yields. Breaking the bridging system with pyridine yields the mononuclear complex 5e (ΦF = 5%), while metathesis of trifluoroacetate ligands with chloride leads to the dinuclear complex 6e, also a precursor of fluorescent complexes by breaking the chloride bridging system with pyridine (7e, ΦF = 7%), or by substitution of chloride ligands with pyridine (8e, ΦF = 15%) or acetylacetonate (9e, ΦF = 2%). In addition to notable photophysical properties, dinuclear complexes 4 and 11 also exhibit significant photochemical reactivity. Thus, irradiation of orthopalladates 4a-c and 11a-c in CH2Cl2 with blue light (465 nm) proceeds via [2 + 2] photocycloaddition of the CvC double bonds of imidazolone and thiazolone ligands, yielding the corresponding cyclobutane-bridging diaminotruxillic derivatives 10a-c and 12a-c, respectively. Polyaniline (PANI) stands out as a highly promising conducting polymer with potential for advanced utilization in high-performance pseudocapacitors. Therefore, there exists a pressing need to bolster the structural durability of PANI, achievable by developing composite materials that can enhance its viability for supercapacitor applications. In this particular study, a pioneering approach was undertaken to produce a novel NiMn2O4/PANI supercapacitor electrode material. A comprehensive array of analytical techniques was employed to ascertain the structural configuration, morphology, oxidation states of elements, composition, and surface characteristics of the electrode material. The electrochemical evaluation of the NiMn2O4/PANI composite shows a specific capacitance (Cs) of 1530 ± 2 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. Significantly, the composite material displays an outstanding 93.61% retention of its capacity after an extensive 10 000 cycles, signifying remarkable cycling stability, while the 2-electrode configuration reveals a Cs value of 764 F g−1 at 5 mV s−1 and 826 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 with a smaller charge transfer resistance (Rct) value of 0.67 Ω. Chronoamperometric tests showed excellent stability of the fabricated material up to 50 h. This significant advancement bears immense promise for its potential implementation in high-efficiency energy storage systems and heralds a new phase in the development of supercapacitor technology with improved stability and performance metrics. A series of novel Eu3+-activated Ba2Gd2/3TeO6 (BGT) phosphors were successfully synthesised via a high temperature solid state reaction method. The crystal structure analysis showed that Eu3+-doped Ba2Gd2/3TeO6 double perovskite phosphors possess monoclinic symmetry with space group P21/n. The as-prepared phosphors can be efficiently excited by far-ultraviolet light to generate reddish orange luminescence of around 593 nm corresponding to the 5D0 → 7F1 transitions of Eu3+ ions. Gd3+ acts as a sensitizer for luminescence enhancement. The highest luminescence intensity corresponded to x = 0.11 Eu3+ concentration, and the critical distance was calculated to be 9.61 Å, indicating that multipolar interaction is behind the concentration quenching mechanism. Besides, the optimum concentration Eu3+-activated Ba2Gd2/3TeO6 phosphor exhibited color co-ordinates of (0.63, 0.36), a high color purity of 94.21% and a quantum efficiency of 18%. JO intensity parameters reveal the slight distortion of the crystal field around the activator ion. Notably, the maximum relative sensitivities of the BGT:0.11Eu3+ phosphor were found to be 0.19% K−1 within the temperature range of 300–500 K and 2.07% K−1 within 80–300 K, and it can potentially be used as a promising thermometer in high and low temperature regions, respectively. The substantial expense associated with catalysts significantly hampers the progress of electrolytic water-based hydrogen production technology. There is an urgent need to find non-precious metal catalysts that are both cost-effective and highly efficient. Here, the porous Ni2P–FePx nanomaterials were successfully prepared by hydrothermal method, nickel foam as the base, iron nitrate solution as the caustic agent and iron source, and finally phosphating at low temperature. The obtained porous Ni2P–FePx nanosheets showed excellent catalytic activity under alkaline PH = 14, and an overpotential of merely 241 mV was required to achieve a current density of 50 mA cm−2. In the process of handling and storage of radioactive actinides it is essential to selectively sequester the minor actinides, such as Am and Cm, through a competitive complexation process. Herein we computationally designed two core modified ligands (L21− and L3) through systematic oxygen substitution at the NH sites of dipyriamethyrin (L1_2H), a hexadentate expanded porphyrin, and studied their competitive complexation towards trivalent actinides (An = Am/Cm) from their trichlorides using density functional theory (DFT). We observed shorter An–N bonds and longer An–O bonds in complexes based on core modified ligands (L21− and L3). The An–Cl bond length increases with increasing axial coordination number (i.e., from L12− to L3) to accommodate the ligands. All the bonds were identified to be electrostatic in nature. L12− exhibits shorter bonds and larger bond orders on complexing with Am than with Cm. On moving from complexes of L21− to L3, the An–N bond lengths are shortened, while An–O bond lengths become larger. Between the complexes of Am and Cm, there is marginal difference in their bond distances with L21− and L3. Charge analysis shows ligand to metal charge transfer during coordination, with back-donation from An to N/O and Cl. The calculated spin-density analysis indicates that An remains in its trivalent oxidation state on complexation, while orbital occupation analysis shows that the 5f and 6d orbitals are involved in bonding; this was confirmed by molecular orbital (MO) analysis that shows the complexes of L21− and L3 to exhibit higher degeneracy in their overlapping MOs. Further, the energy decomposition analysis (EDA) confirms that all ionic bonds are primarily due to electrostatic contributions, where the orbital contributions increase from L12− to L3 complexes and maximum covalency was observed in Cm complexes due to the energy matching between the 5f orbitals of Cm and the 2p orbitals of N and Cl, compared to Am. To confirm the competitiveness in the complexation of the ligand towards Am vs. Cm, the thermodynamic parameters were analysed for the ligand and metal substitution reactions. Achieving high photoelectrochemical conversion efficiency requires the logical layout of a composite photocatalyst with optimal charge separation and transfer with ideal light harvesting capabilities to enhance the photocatalytic performance and the degradation rate towards organic pollutants. Herein, a novel In2O3/WO3@Ti4N3Tx S-scheme heterojunction was successfully synthesized and confirmed through valence band VB-XPS and Mott Schottky combined analysis. The formed MXene-doped In2O3/WO3@Ti4N3Tx S-scheme significantly enhances the charge flow and spatial separation with an improved oxidation and reduction ability. An in-built interfacial electric field at the WO3–In2O3 boundary enhanced the light-harvesting capacity, whereas Ti4N3Tx MXene offers a unique electron trapping effect which effectively lowers high charge carrier recombination rate-related photocatalytic deficit. It preserves the exceptional redox potency of the photocatalyst by providing a directed acceleration and effective separation of the photogenerated charges. A high carrier density (ND = 7.83 × 1021 cm−3) with a lower negative flat band (VFB = −0.064 V vs. Ag/AgCl) was obtained by Mott–Schottky analysis for 3 wt% In2O3/WO3@Ti4N3Tx, an indicator that a low overpotential is needed to activate photocatalytic reactions. This study, therefore, provides a novel thought for the design and fabrication of an S-scheme heterojunction for photocatalytic reactions for mineralization of organic pollutants in water and clean energy production. A V2C MXene has a high theoretical capacity and low diffusion barrier, showing tremendous potential in lithium-ion batteries. However, most reports on V2C focus on a multilayered structure that is stacked, which diminishes the ionic accessibility and results in unsatisfactory cycling stability. Therefore, we synthesized a few-layer V2C (f-V2C) material and added multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The formed f-V2C/MWCNT provides abundant pores, which enhance ionic accessibility, so that Li+ can easily enter the layer space. The introduction of MWCNTs can further separate the f-V2C, expand the specific surface area, reduce the charge transfer resistance, and heighten the structural stability. The experiments reveal that f-V2C/MWCNT has a high specific capacity of 531 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 after 100 cycles. Even at a high current density of 5.0 A g−1, the specific capacity can still reach 166 mA h g−1. Moreover, the f-V2C/MWCNT structure shows good cycling stability with a capacity retention rate of 95% after 1000 cycles at 5.0 A g−1. Metalloviologens, as emerging electron-transfer photochromic compounds, have shown intriguing properties such as radiochromism, photochromism and photoconductance. However, only a limited number of them have been reported so far. Exploration of new metalloviologens is strongly desired. Herein, we report a new solvothermally synthesized metalloviologen complex [CdCl2(ND)2]n (1, ND = 1,5-naphthalenes) that exhibits photochromic and intrinsic white light emission properties. Density functional theory calculation results reveal that the photochromism could be assigned to photoinduced electron transfer from chlorine atoms to ND molecules. The photoinduced charge-separated states are heat/air stable, attributed to the delocalization of ND and strong intermolecular π–π interactions. Besides, complex 1 consistently emits intrinsic white light when excited with 340–370 nm UV light, achieving high color rendering index (CRI) values (82.54–94.04). By adjusting the excitation wavelength, both "warm" and "cold" white light emission can be produced, making it suitable for the application of a white light emitting diode (WLED). Thus, this work demonstrates that the ND-based metalloviologen is not only helpful in producing photochromism, but also beneficial for creating white-light emission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Four salts of an anionic iron(III) bis-complex, [Fe(L L -thr)2]1−, were synthesized from water or methanol. H2L L -thr is a tridentate ligand derived from the L -threonine amino acid, and the cations used are Li+ (1), Na+ (2), K+ (3), and Ba2+ (4). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction showed that all the complexes are coordination polymers of different dimensionalities. The iron(III) complex binds to cations through its coordinated phenolate and non-coordinated carboxylate oxygen atoms. While Li+ forms a linear chain, all others have a pair of bridged cations intervening the iron(III) complexes. The 3D network of Ba2+ salt has a sizeable solvent-accessible space occupied by aquated chloride ions. The differences in circular dichroism (CD) spectra and significantly lower conductance values in water and methanol support partial retention of the polymeric nature in methanol. The visible spectra of 4 in methanol or water showed an ∼10 nm shift of the charge transfer bands from 3. However, the addition of Al3+ salt to 2 showed a significant colour shift. Further investigation confirmed that the colour shift is due to partial protonation of the complex with protons generated from salt hydrolysis. Most reports on visual aluminium detection consider aluminium's binding as the shift's source. The present results show that protonation due to hydrolysis of aluminium salt can skew the observation. Anthraimidazoledione-based optical sensors have been designed by varying the position of the nitro functional group. All three positional isomers showed highly colored, photostable optical signals owing to intramolecular charge transfer interactions. Despite having the same anion-binding site (imidazole unit), the selectivity and sensitivity of the compounds depend on the positioning of the nitro group. The selectivity was fairly good for the meta isomer, followed by the ortho and para isomers, respectively. In contrast, the sensitivity towards anions followed a completely opposite trend, with the para isomer being the most sensitive one towards anions. Interestingly, the color changing response along the turn-on fluorescence signal was observed only with CN-ions in a semi-aqueous environment. Though the introduction of water as a co-solvent could improve the selectivity, the sensitivity was found to be slightly less than that observed in pure organic medium. Mechanistic studies indicated hydrogen bonding interactions between the imidazole -NH proton and cyanide, which further facilitated the extent of intramolecular charge transfer. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), an appealing metal-free polymer, has featured in extensive research in heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions owing to its advantages of stable chemical and thermal properties, ease of structural regulation and unique redox ability. However, there are still some gaps in the understanding of the mechanism and fate of g-C3N4 and its derivatives in heterogeneous Fenton reaction degradation of contaminants. This paper gives systematic emphasis to the development and progress of g-C3N4 and its composites as catalysts in heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions. The main synthesis strategies of g-C3N4 composites are discussed, including calcination, hydrothermal method and self-assembly method. Then, the key catalytic properties of g-C3N4 in Fenton-like applications, including anchoring nanoparticles, increasing specific surface area and exposed active surface sites, as well as regulating charge transfer reactions, are highlighted. Special emphasis is placed on its multifunctional role in heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions and the mechanisms involved in the activation of hydrogen peroxide, persulfates, and photocatalytic activation of persulfate. Lastly, the existing challenges and possible development direction of g-C3N4-coupling Fenton reactions are proposed. The synthesis, photophysics and reverse saturable absorption of two cationic dinuclear Ir(III) complexes bearing fluorenyl-tethered 2-(quinolin-2-yl)quinoxaline (quqo) ligands are reported in this paper. The two complexes possess intense and featureless diimine ligand localized 1ILCT (intraligand charge transfer)/1π,π* absorption bands at ca. 330 and 430 nm, and a weak 1,3MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer)/1,3LLCT (ligand-to-ligand charge transfer) absorption band at >500 nm. Both complexes exhibit weak dual phosphorescence at ca. 590 nm and 710 nm, which are attributed to the 3ILCT/3π,π* and 3MLCT/3LLCT states, respectively. The low-energy 3MLCT/3LLCT state also gives rise to a moderately strong triplet excited-state absorption at 490–800 nm. Because of the stronger triplet excited-state absorption than the ground-state absorption of these complexes at 532 nm, both complexes manifest a moderate reverse saturable absorption (RSA) at 532 nm for ns laser pulses. Expansion of the π-conjugation of the fluorenyl-tethered diimine ligand in Ir-1 causes a slight red-shift of the 1ILCT/1π,π* absorption bands in its UV-vis absorption spectrum and the 3MLCT/3LLCT absorption band in the transient absorption spectrum and slightly enhances the RSA at 532 nm compared to that in Ir-2. Metal halide perovskites, such as iodine methylamine lead (MAPbI3), have received extensive attention in the field of photocatalytic decomposition of HI for hydrogen evolution, due to their excellent photoelectric properties. In this paper, a new MAPbI3-based composite, MoC/MAPbI3, was synthesized. The results show that 15 wt% MoC/MAPbI3 has the best hydrogen production performance (38.4 μmol h−1), which is approximately 24-times that of pure MAPbI3 (1.61 μmol h−1). With the extension of the catalytic time, the hydrogen production rate of MoC/MAPbI3 reached 165.3 μmol h−1 after 16 h due to the effective separation and transfer of charge carriers between MoC and MAPbI3, showing excellent hydrogen evolution rate performance under visible light. In addition, the cycling stability of MoC/MAPbI3 did not decrease in multiple 4 h cycle tests. The goal of this study was to investigate how the electron-donating capability around the lower valent metal ion and the electron-accepting capability of the higher valent metal ion influence metal to metal charge transfer (MMCT) properties in mixed-valence complexes. A series of trinuclear ruthenium complexes represented as [Ru2(ap-4-Me)3(CH3COO)N≡CRuCpMex(dppe)][PF6] (CpMex = polymethylcyclopentadienyl, x = 0, 1, and 5; and dppe = 1, 2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, ap-4-Me = 2-anilino-4-methylpyridine) and their one-electron oxidized products were synthesized and fully characterized. The UV–vis-NIR spectra confirmed that as the electron donor character of the CpMex(dppe)RuCN fragment enhanced or the electron-accepting capability of the higher valent diruthenium cluster increased, the RuII → Ru V2 or Ru VI2 Ru2 MMCT bands shifted to lower energies, which was supported by TDDFT calculations. Praseodymium (Pr3+) ion and the transition metal vanadium (V5+) ion with d0 electronic configuration can form an intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) band, which can function both as a compensatory channel for its red emission and as a quenching channel, thus affecting the luminescence thermal stability of the phosphors. Research studies reveal that the emission of Pr3+ in the YVO4 matrix can be quenched by the IVCT mechanism, thereby limiting the application of phosphors. As such, the present contribution is based on the solid solution replacement strategy to inhibit the constitutent of the IVCT quenching channel and thus improve thermal stability. Therefore, phosphonium (P5+) with a valence state matching V5+ and a similar ion radius was selected for the V/P substitution. It lacks a d0 electron configuration, preventing the formation of an IVCT band with Pr3+ and thereby inhibiting the construction of the quenching channels to enhance thermal stability. While the empirical formula of IVCT indicates a decrease in the IVCT energy level from 3.32438 to 3.06251 eV upon the introduction of P5+, the PLE spectra demonstrate a sharp reduction in IVCT intensity, i.e., weakening of the quenching channel. The thermal stability of the phosphors at different excitation locations was enhanced with the rise of P5+ concentration. When excited at the 3P2 level, the Y0.995PO4:0.5%Pr3+ phosphor demonstrated highly stable red emission from 303 to 523 K, with a luminescence integrated intensity ranging from 95.5% to 105.3% compared to that at 303 K. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) anodes show significant advantages in ion storage owing to their low cost, abundant sources, and small volume change during cycling. However, their intrinsic low electronic conductivity and sluggish ion diffusion coefficient restrict the application of TiO2 anodes, especially at high current densities. The construction of a covalently-bonded interface in TiO2-based composite anodes is an effective approach to solve these issues. Covalent bonds are usually formed in situ during materials synthesis processes, such as high-energy ball milling, solvothermal reactions, plasma-assisted thermal treatment, and addition of a linking agent for covalent coupling. In this study, we demonstrate that a spontaneous redox reaction between defective TiO2 powder and an oxidative graphene oxide (GO) substate can be used to form interfacial covalent bonds in composites. Different structural characterization techniques confirmed the formation of interfacial covalent bonds. Electrochemical measurements on an optimized sample showed that a specific capacity of 281.3 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles can be achieved at a current density of 1 C (1 C = 168 mA g−1). Even at a high rate of 50 C, the electrode maintained a reversible capacity of 97.0 mA h g−1. Designing photocatalysts with efficient charge separation and electron transport capabilities to achieve efficient visible-driven hydrogen production remains a challenge. Herein, 2D–2D conductive metal–organic framework/g-C3N4 heterojunctions were successfully prepared by an in situ assembly. Compared to pristine g-C3N4, the ratio-optimized Ni-CAT-1/g-C3N4 exhibits approximately 3.6 times higher visible-light H2 production activity, reaching 14 mmol g−1. Through investigations using time-resolved photoluminescence, surface photovoltage, and wavelength-dependent photocurrent action spectroscopies, it is determined that the improved photocatalytic performance is attributed to enhanced charge transfer and separation, specifically the efficient transfer of excited high-energy-level electrons from g-C3N4 to Ni-CAT in the heterojunctions. Furthermore, the high electrical conductivity of Ni-CAT enables rapid electron transport, contributing to the overall enhanced performance. This work provides a feasible strategy to construct efficient dimension-matched g-C3N4-based heterojunction photocatalysts with high-efficiency charge separation for solar-driven H2 production. Strengthening the separation of photogenerated charge carriers is crucial for improving the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Herein, t-Mn0.5Cd0.5S/Ov-WO3 (t-MCSW) triple-phase junctions with rich oxygen vacancies were developed using the calcination-hydrothermal method. The corresponding morphology and structure of the samples were examined by XRD, TEM and XPS. The formation of the S-scheme heterostructure in t-MCSW has also been confirmed with in situ XPS, work function analysis and free radical capture tests. The experimental results demonstrate that t-MCSW-7 exhibited optimal activity (194.2 mmol g−1 h−1), which was about 4 times higher than that of the individual Mn0.5Cd0.5S (t-MCS, 48.8 mmol g−1 h−1). The apparent quantum yield of t-MCSW-7 is 29.14% at 420 nm, and the material exhibits excellent stability after seven cycles of photocatalytic reaction. The excellent photocatalytic activity of t-MCSW-7 is attributed to more efficient separation of charge carriers by triple-phase junctions connected by homojunctions and heterojunctions. Moreover, the existence of oxygen vacancies broadens absorption spectra and accelerates surface charge transfer. The synergistic effect of phase junctions and oxygen vacancies leads to an enhancement of hydrogen evolution activity. This work provides a new idea for preparing efficient photocatalysts. Layered materials with a robust structure and reversible intercalation behavior are highly sought-after in applications involving energy conversion and storage systems, energy converting devices, supercapacitors, batteries, superconductors, photonic materials, and catalysis involving hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), solar cells and sensors. In the current study, quasi-2D rhombohedral Bi0.775Ln0.225O1.5 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Eu) samples, synthesized by a solution combustion route, have been demonstrated to intercalate iodine reversibly. A solid–vapor reaction was employed to intercalate iodine at moderate temperatures, and deintercalation occurred on heating at higher temperatures. Expansion of the rhombohedral c-axis by ∼10 Å occurred, and the iodine between the interlayers existed as triiodide ions (I3−) in an unsymmetrical fashion. The amount of intercalated iodide has been determined from thermogravimetric analysis. Electron microscopic analysis confirmed these systems' intercalation and subsequent lattice expansion. In the diffuse reflectance spectra, charge transfer from the triiodide ions to the host oxide was noticed, and it caused the absorption edge to fall beyond the visible region for the intercalated samples. XPS analysis of iodine intercalated Bi0.775Pr0.225O1.5 has shown the mixed valence states for Pr and the existence of I3− along with some IO3− species. The quasi-2D structure was stable during the thermal deintercalation process. The evaluation of iodine intercalated Bi0.775Ln0.225O1.5 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Eu) samples as anode material in the lithium-ion battery system has given quite promising results, exhibiting fast Li+-ion diffusion, low charge transfer resistance, good reversible capacity, capacity retention (after cycling back to 10 mA g−1), and structural stability (after long cycles). Exploring non-noble metal dual-functional electrocatalysts with high activity and stability for water splitting is highly desirable. In this study, using zeolitic imidazolate framework-L (ZIF-L) nanoarrays as the precursor, manganese oxide-decorated porous nickel–cobalt phosphide nanosheet arrays have been prepared on nickel foam (denoted as MnOx/NiCoP/NF) through cation etching, phosphorization and electrodeposition, which are utilized as an efficient dual-functional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting. The hierarchical porous nanosheet arrays provide abundant active sites for the electrochemical process, while the MnOx modification induces strong interfacial interaction, benefiting charge transfer. Thus, the MnOx/NiCoP/NF exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, overpotential of 93 mV at 10 mA cm−2), oxygen evolution reaction (OER, overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA cm−2) and overall water splitting (cell voltage of 1.59 V at 10 mA cm−2). Furthermore, it shows superior stability during continuous overall water splitting for 200 h. Synthesis, characterization and thorough investigation of the photophysical and electrochemical properties of a new category of emissive homo- and heteroleptic Ru(II)-complexes derived from the [4′-(p-triphenylphosphonium methyl phenyl)-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine]bromide (tpy-PhCH2PPh3Br) ligand have been executed in this work. Incorporation of the PhCH2PPh3+Br− group at the terpyridine motif appropriately adjusts the triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) and metal-centered (3MC) excited states so that the complexes luminesce at room temperature (RT) having lifetimes within the range of 6.82–9.63 ns. The RT emission characteristics of the complexes get further enhanced via aggregation phenomena through the use of different solvent/non-solvent mixtures (DMSO/H2O and DMSO/PhCH3 mixtures). Temperature dependent emission spectral measurements indicate that the emission intensity, quantum yield and lifetime increase upon dropping down the temperature, thereby designated as the on-state, while the increase of temperature causes a reduction of the said properties, indicating the off-state and the process is fully reversible. Taking advantage of the active methylene group coupled with a phosphonium motif, anion sensing characteristics of the complexes are investigated systematically in DMSO through the use of various optical channels and spectroscopic tools. The complexes are very much sensitive to fluoride and to a lesser extent acetate and dihydrogen phosphate among the studied anions. In essence, the complexes function as sensors for temperature and fluoride ion. Computational investigations were also executed via density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD)-DFT to obtain a clear understanding of the electronic structures of the metalloreceptors, appropriate assignment of the spectral bands and their mode of interaction with selected anions. The energy loss (Eloss) caused by inefficient charge transfer and large energy level offset at the buried interface can easily restrict the performance of p-i-n perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). In this study, the utilization of poly-TPD and P3CT-N as a dual-hole transporting layer (HTLs) was implemented in a sequential manner. This approach aimed to improve the charge transfer efficiency of the HTL and mitigate charge recombination at the interface between the HTL and PVK. The results showed that this strategy also could achieve more suitable energy levels, improve the quality of the perovskite film layer, and ultimately enhance the device's stability. IPVSCs employing the dual-HTLs approach exhibited the highest power conversion efficiency of 19.85%, and the open-circuit voltage increased to 1.09 V from 1.00 V. This study offers a straightforward and efficient approach to boost the device performance by minimizing Eloss and reducing the buried interfacial defects. Engineering heterostructures with a unique surface/interface structure is one of the effective strategies to develop highly active noble-metal-free catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), because the surface/interface of catalysts is the main site for the OER. Herein, we design a coralloid NiMo(Fe)-20 catalyst with a crystalline–amorphous interface through combining a hydrothermal method and an Fe-induced surface reconfiguration strategy. That is, after Fe3+ impregnation treatment, the Ni(OH)2–NiMoO4 pre-catalyst with a complete crystalline surface is restructured into a trimetallic heterostructure with a crystalline–amorphous interface, which facilitates mass diffusion and charge transfer during the OER. As expected, self-supported NiMo(Fe)-20 exhibits excellent electrocatalytic water oxidation performance (overpotential: η−10 = 220 mV, η−100 = 239 mV) in the alkaline electrolyte, and its electrocatalytic performance hardly changes after maintaining the current density of 50 mA cm−2 for 10 hours. Furthermore, nickel foam (NF) supported commercial Pt/C and self-supported NiMo(Fe)-20 served as the cathode and anode of the Pt/C‖NiMo(Fe)-20 electrolyzer, respectively, which exhibits a lower cell voltage (E−100 = 1.53 V) than that of the Pt/C‖RuO2 electrolyzer (E−100 = 1.58 V) assembled with noble metal-based catalysts. The enhanced electrocatalytic performance of the NiMo(Fe)-20 catalyst is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between the crystalline–amorphous interface and the coralloid trimetallic heterostructure. The development of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is hindered by the slow kinetics of four-electron processes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and severe charge recombination. Amorphous carbon was chosen as a carrier for the active sites due to its exceptional conductivity and strong loading capacity. In addition, this enhanced performance was attributed to the loading of oxides of cobalt. Here, amorphous carbon-covered cobalt oxides chosen as a co-catalyst loaded on α-Fe2O3 (noted as CoOx@C/Ti-Fe2O3) have been synthesized, and they show a high current density (2.86 mA cm−2 under 1.23 V vs. RHE), and a low onset potential (0.611 V vs. RHE). Experimental analysis demonstrates that the charge transfer and separation leading to accelerated OER dynamics and improved PEC performance are enhanced by CoOx@C effectively. This study is concerned with the iridium–palladium (Ir–Pd) binary alloy as a counter electrode (CE) for DSSC. The CE was prepared using the liquid phase deposition (LPD) technique. The influence of the concentration of hydrogen hexachloroiridate(IV) hydrate (H2Cl6Ir·H2O) on the properties and the performance of the device was investigated. The source of iridium was H2Cl6Ir·H2O. XRD analysis confirmed that the dominant phase of Ir–Pd existed in the sample. The grain size of Ir–Pd increased with the increase in the concentration of H2Cl6Ir·H2O until an optimum concentration of 0.7 mM was reached. The % wt of Ir was found to increase with the concentration of H2Cl6Ir·H2O. The device utilizing Ir–Pd CE with 0.7 mM H2Cl6Ir·H2O demonstrated the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.84%, beating that of the device with Pt CE having a PCE of 5.04%. This is because the device possesses the lowest charge transfer resistance (Rct), highest recombination resistance (Rcr), and longest carrier lifetime (τ), and the device possesses the highest reduction current (Jpc) and incident-photon conversion efficiency (IPCE). The PCE was significantly affected by Ir content in the binary alloy of Ir–Pd. According to the PCE result, Ir–Pd CE was found as a suitable substitution for Pt as CE for the device. A joint structural and spectroscopic study of simple bis-cyclometataled rhodium(III) and iridium(III) complexes with 2-phenylpyridine and aromatic β-diketones (dibenzoylmethane, benzoylacetone, benzoyltrifluoroacetone, and 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone) reveals an interplay between the solid-state emission efficiency and crystal packing peculiarities of the complexes. Although the prepared rhodium(III) cyclometalates are isostructural with iridium(III) analogues, different types of π–π interactions are responsible for the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) of the complexes depending on the metal ion. For iridium(III) complexes, pyridyl–pyridyl contacts are essential for AIE because they lower the energy of the emissive metal-to-ligand charge transfer state below that of the non-emissive state located at the ancillary ligand. Enabled by phenyl–pyridyl interactions partially blocking the population of non-emissive d–d states, solid-state phosphorescence enhancement is successfully achieved in a rhodium(III) complex with ancillary benzoyltrifluoroacetone, which is the first example of a rhodium complex exhibiting AIE. CsPbBr3 all-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been extensively investigated due to their remarkable stability. However, their limited film quality and wide bandgap result in a low photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE). In this study, BiI3 was incorporated into CsPbBr3 films to synergistically enhance light absorption and film quality. It was found that the partial substitution of Pb2+ and Br− with Bi3+ and I− in CsPbBr3 improved film quality, enhanced light absorption, and facilitated charge transfer and extraction. The device incorporating BiI3-incorporated CsPbBr3 as a light absorbing layer achieved an efficiency of 9.54%, exhibiting a significant enhancement of 19.4% compared to the undoped device. Nitrogen complexation with π-conjugated ligands is an effective strategy for synthesizing luminescent molecules. The asymmetric bridging ligands L (L1 and L2) have been designed. The terminal chelating sites of the L1 and L2 bridging ligands consisted of 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) and 1,10-phenanthroline moieties (where L = L1 and L2; L1 = 2-(3-((4-([2,2′-bipyridin]-6-yl)benzyl)oxy)phenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline and L2 = 2-(3-((4-(6-phenyl-[2,2′-bipyridin]-4-yl)benzyl)oxy)phenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline). The full use of the synthetic strategy of the “complexes as ligands and complexes as metals” was expected to successfully design and synthesize a series of conjugated metal-exchange complexes linked by the asymmetric bridging ligands L1 and L2. These compounds included monometallic complexes Ru(L) and (L)Ru (C1, C2, C7, and C8), homometallic complexes Ru(L)Ru (C3 and C4), and heterometallic complexes Os(L)Ru and Ru(L)Os (C5, C6, C9, and C10) with Ru- or Os-based units. C3–C10 complexes exhibited various degrees of octahedral distortion around the Ru(II) or Os(II) center, which was consistent with the optimized geometry of the coordination complexes based on density functional theory calculation. These complexes exhibited intense spin-allowed ligand-centered transitions with high absorbance at around 288 nm upon absorbing visible light. Notably, all complexes exhibited spin-allowed metal-to-ligand charge transfer absorption of the Ru-based units in the 440–450 nm range. In addition, the heterometallic C5, C6, C9, and C10 complexes showed absorption of the Os-based units in the range of 565–583 nm. The intramolecular energy transfer of C3 and C5 was briefly discussed by comparing the emission intensity of monometallic C1 and C2 to that of binuclear complexes C3 and C5, respectively. The results indicated that the intramolecular energy transfer of the Ru(II)/Os(II) polypyridine complexes proceeded from the Ru(II)- to the Os(II)-based units in the heterometallic C5 and C6 complexes. By providing the spatial separation of the active sites and retaining high oxidative and reducing capacity, the direct Z-scheme heterostructure is considered the most potential structure for yielding photo-electric response. However, challenges still exist in the directional transfer of charge carriers between two semiconductors in direct Z-scheme structures. In this regard, by constructing the Vzn defect and p–n junction, a direct Z-scheme ZnxCd1−xS@ZnS-NiS heterostructure was obtained for the regulated electronic structure, which ensured high-yield hydrogen properties. The Zn vacancy in the partially-coated ZnS shell led to the Vzn energy level, and the addition of NiS led to the p–n structure, which caused a drastic downshift of the band edge potentials in comparison to that of pristine CdS. This variation gave rise to a staggered band edge alignment between ZnxCd1−xS and NiS, resulting in the variation of charge transfer kinetics from type-I to direct Z-scheme. Through careful characterization, it was found that the optimal photocatalytic hydrogen precipitation activity reached 16 683.6 μmol g−1 h−1, which was 70 times that of CdS, and this improvement was considered to form a spatial barrier, providing a clear direction and path for carrier transmission. The crystallography data suggest different oxidation sites in the ground state for one-electron oxidation products 13+ and 23+, and the electrochemical and Mössbauer spectra suggest that in the one-electron oxidation compounds 13+, the charge is delocalized all along the trimetal backbone Fe–Ru–Fe, while in 23+, the charge is rather delocalized between the two metal parts Fe–Ru. A judicious selection of substituents in cyclometalating 2-arylbenzimidazoles and an ancillary aromatic 1,3-diketone enabled the creation of heteroleptic iridium(III) complexes demonstrating strong light absorption up to 500 nm (ε ≈ 10 000–12 000 M−1 cm−1). The complexes, which were studied by various spectroscopic techniques, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and cyclic voltammetry, displayed tunable absorption maxima depending on the nature of substituents and their positions. The experimental study was corroborated by quantum chemical calculations, which showed an increased contribution of intraligand charge transfer transitions to the visible light absorption in the case of complexes containing electron-withdrawing substituents in the ligands. Despite being of high intensity, some of these transitions are responsible for the formation of the excited states located at large distances from the 'anchoring' fragment incorporated in the ancillary ligand. In turn, incorporation of electron-donating substituents at the para-position to the Ir–C bonds increases the number of excited states located on the ancillary ligand. The destabilization of the HOMO, which is caused by the increase in the electron-donating ability of the substituents in the metalated rings, translated into negative shifts of the Ir4+/Ir3+ redox potential, affecting, in some cases, the degree of electrochemical reversibility of the complexes. Several complexes having strong light-harvesting characteristics and undergoing reversible oxidation in the appropriate potential range were used for coating the TiO2 photoanodes, which reached an efficiency of 2.15% upon irradiation with the standard AM 1.5 spectrum. Various naphthalenediimide (NDI) based electron donor–acceptor coordination polymers (D–A CPs) have been constructed and used to explore charge transfer (CT) and electron transfer (ET) behaviors. Up to now, significant progress has been made in the interface contact and electron donor–acceptor ability matching mechanism, while the electronic density effect of the electron donors on the CT and ET behaviors is still not known. Herein, two NDI-based D–A CPs, [Cd2(H2NDI)(IPA)2(H2O)2] (1) and [Cd2(H2NDI)(IPA-OH)2(H2O)2] (2), are constructed using an NDI-based ligand and two aromatic carboxylic acid ligands (H2NDI = 2,7-bis(3,5-dimethyl) dipyrazol-1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxydiimide, H2IPA = isophthalic acid; and H2IPA-OH = 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid). UV-vis and EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations analyses reveal that the occurrence of themal electron transfer (TET) in 1 and 2 results from the HOMO of the IPA and IPA-OH lying higher than the LUMO of the NDI. Meanwhile, compared to 1, the UV-vis absorption spectrum of 2 exhibits a significant red shift, which suggests higher electron density of the donor and more electron transfer pathways are beneficial for the occurrence of intermolecular CT. After UV light irradiation, the comparison of the photochromic behavior of 1 and 2 confirms the negative effect of the stronger CT on photoinduced electron transfer (PET). Four series of new luminescent cyclometalated complexes [Pt(C^N)(IPy)Y] (HC^N = 2-phenylpyridine (Hppy), 2-(1-benzofuran-3-yl)pyridine (Hbfpy), methyl-2-phenylquinoline-4-carboxylate (Hmpqc), 2-(1-benzothiophen-3-yl)pyridine (Hbtpy), IPy = 4-iodopyridine, and Y = Cl, Br, I) have been investigated as X/Y 'building blocks' for the construction of a supramolecular network utilizing the I atom in IPy as a halogen bond (XB) donor (the X atom). The σ-hole of the X atom was found to provide non-covalent X⋯Y, X⋯Pt and X⋯π (π system of the metalated chelate ring) interactions for the complexes in the crystal state. NBO analysis confirms donation of the platinum electron density to iodine upon the X⋯Pt interaction. The nature of the X counterpart in XB depends on the nature of the Y atom and the cyclometalating ligand of the Pt(II) complex. DFT calculations show that the HOMO of [Pt(C^N)(IPy)Y] in the S0 state is delocalized over Pt, Y and a C-coordinating fragment of C^N, while the LUMO in most complexes is formed by the Py orbitals of IPy. However, the α-HOMO in the lowest triplet state of [Pt(C^N)(IPy)Y] contains no contribution of the IPy wavefunctions. All Pt(II) complexes exhibited triplet luminescence in solution and in the solid state (Φ up to 0.129), which is determined by the nature of the C^N ligand. The emission profile is independent of the nature of the ligand Y, while the quantum yield decreases from Cl to I. Accordingly, on the basis of DFT calculation, this emission is interpreted as a C^N intraligand charge transfer predominantly. The XB formation did not show an effect on the luminescence of the complexes in the solid phase, however grinding of crystals results in an increase of brightness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this manuscript we report the synthesis and X-ray characterization of two cyanidoaurate telluronium salts, namely (3-fluorophenyl)(methyl)(phenyl)telluronium dicyanidoaurate [(3-F-Ph)(Me)(Ph)Te][Au(CN)2] (1) and methyldiphenyltelluronium dicyanidoaurate [(Me)(Ph)2Te][Au(CN)2] (2). In the solid state, the tellurium atom establishes three concurrent and directional chalcogen bonds (ChBs) with the adjacent anions, in both compounds. These charge-assisted ChBs (CAChBs) have been analyzed using DFT calculations and several computational tools. The MEP surface analysis discloses the existence of three σ-holes at the Te-atoms capable of establishing strong CAChBs with the counter-ions. In addition, significant charge transfer from the lone pair orbital at the N-atom of the anion to the antibonding σ*(Te–C) orbital of the cation is observed in some cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reasonably combining the strengths of insertion and conversion anode materials to create an advanced anode material remains a formidable challenge for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this work, bulk MoS2 embedded with T-Nb2O5 nanospheres was synthesized via a simple hydrothermal process and a polydopamine carbon source was introduced by heat treatment. The design strategy can effectively accelerate the charge transfer and reduce the volume expansion during electrochemical cycling, leading to an improvement in lithium storage performance. As a consequence, the coexistence of T-Nb2O5, MoS2 and C can achieve the best synergistic effect when the molar ratio of Nb and Mo sources was 1 : 1. Notably, the T-Nb2O5@MoS2@C-1-1 electrode not only delivered an excellent reversible capacity of 518 mA h g−1 at a current density of 0.1 A g−1 but also exhibited superb cycling stability. The specific capacity of this electrode maintained 187 mA h g−1 at 2 A g−1 after 1000 cycles with a negligible capacity fading rate of only 0.015% per cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of organometallic Re(I)(L)(CO)3Br complexes with 4′-substituted terpyridine ligands (L) has been synthesised as electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction. The complexes' spectroscopic characterisation and computationally optimised geometry demonstrate a facial geometry around Re(I) with three cis COs and the terpyridine ligand coordinating in a bidentate mode. The effect of substitution on the 4′-position of terpyridine (Re1–5) on CO2 electroreduction was investigated and compared with a known Lehn-type catalyst, Re(I)(bpy)(CO)3Br (Re7). All complexes catalyse CO evolution in homogeneous organic media at moderate overpotentials (0.75–0.95 V) with faradaic yields of 62–98%. The electrochemical catalytic activity was further evaluated in the presence of three Brønsted acids to demonstrate the influence of the pKa of the proton sources. The TDDFT and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) studies showed combined charge transfer bands of ILCT and MLCT. Amongst the series, the Re-complex containing a ferrocenyl-substituted terpyridine ligand (Re5) shows an additional intra-ligand charge transfer band and was probed using UV-Vis spectroelectrochemistry. Supercapacitors are gaining popularity these days because of their good cycle stability, superior specific capacitance, high power density, and energy density. Herein, we report the synthesis of bismuth cobalt oxide (BiCoO3) combined with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) by the hydrothermal method. The BiCoO3@g-C3N4 nanocomposite was well characterized using XRD, FE-SEM, FT-IR, and DRS-UV techniques. The supercapacitor properties of the BiCoO3@g-C3N4 nanocomposite were then studied using cyclic voltammetry, galvanic charging-discharging, and impedance spectroscopy techniques. Due to the synergistic effect, BiCoO3@g-C3N4 showed a high specific capacitance value of 341 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 and excellent retention of specific capacitance (98.82%) after 1000 cycles and a high power density of 1125 W kg-1. Using the impedance spectroscopy technique, the charge transfer resistance of BiCoO3, g-C3N4, and BiCoO3@g-C3N4 was measured. BiCoO3@g-C3N4 showed a low charge transfer resistance compared with BiCoO3 and g-C3N4. The asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device was prepared using activated carbon (negative side) and BiCoO3@g-C3N4 (positive side) electrodes. It showed a specific capacitance of 129 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, power density 2800 W kg-1 and energy density 35 W h kg-1. Finally, we conclude that, due to the high specific capacitance, good cycle retention, fast redox activity, and low charge transfer resistance BiCoO3@g-C3N4 is a good electrode material for energy storage applications. Phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-wLEDs) have attracted attention in the field of solidstate lighting. Selection and study of suitable single-phase phosphor and packaging modes are currently the main research hotspots. Herein, color-tunable photoluminescence (PL) and thermally stable tridoped Melitite Sr2MgSi2O7:Ce/Tb/Sm are systematically studied via structural and static/dynamic spectral analyses. All dopants could only be accommodated in the Sr site due to similar ionic radii. Previous studies have concluded that green and red PL could be obtained from singly doped Tb and Sm phosphors with excellent reproduction, and color tunable PL can be achieved from Ce/Tb co-doped phosphors. The forbidden 4f-4f transitions of Tb/Sm cause low efficiency and Ce/Tb co-doping cannot achieve white light emissions. Alternatively, co-doping allowed 5d-4f transition sensitizer with emissions in the UV-blue region (i.e., Ce), color-tunable PL (including the white light); high efficiency of Sr2MgSi2O7:Ce/Tb/Sm could be achieved via energy transfer (ET) from Ce → Tb → Sm. The impossibly direct ET from Ce → Sm is associated with the side metal-metal charge transfer (MMCT) effect. Due to chemically nonequivalent substitutions, two positive Ce(Tb,Sm)Sr and one negative V"Sr were created to maintain the whole charge balance. To reduce the defects and allow more dopants to enter into the Sr site, Na+ was added as a charge balancer to enhance PL efficiency. Furthermore, an alkaline-earth-metal-ions blending strategy via partial replacement of Sr with Ba was investigated to regulate PL owing to the change in crystal field splitting. PL blue-shifted by Ba-co-doping, which could increase the degree of overlapping and enhance ET efficiency. As a proof-of-concept experiment, the pc-wLED fabricated via a combination of the optimal Sr(Ba)2MgSi2O7:Ce/Tb/Sm/Na and an n-UV LED chip based on a remote 'capping' packaging mode shows excellent performances, indicating its strong potential application in the field of solid-state lighting. Three novel naphthalenediimide-based (NDI-based) coordination polymers (CPs), namely [Cd(3-PMNDI)(2,2′-BPDC)] (1), [Cd2(3-PMNDI)1.5(4,4′-BPDC)2(H2O)3]·DMF (2) and [Cd(3-PMNDI)(4,4′-SDC)] (3) (2,2′-H2BPDC = 2,2′-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, 4,4′-H2BPDC = 4,4′-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, 4,4′-H2SDC = 4,4′-stilbenedicarboxylic acid, 3-PMNDI = N,N′-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide, and DMF = N,N′-dimethylformamide), have been designed and synthesized here from electron-deficient PMNDI (electron acceptors, EAs) and electron-rich aromatic carboxylic acids (electron donors, EDs) in the presence of cadmium ions. The introduction of aromatic carboxylic acids with different sizes and conjugation degrees leads to the generation of a two-dimensional (2D) layer in 1, a two-fold interpenetrated three-dimensional (3D) network in 2 and an eight-fold interpenetrated 3D framework in 3. Furthermore, the use of distinct electron-donating aromatic carboxylic acids and the consequent different numbers and strengths of lone pair–π and π–π interactions in the interfacial contacts of EDs/EAs give rise to distinct intermolecular charge transfer (ICT) and initial colors of the three CPs, and consequently cause different photoinduced intermolecular electron transfer (PIET) and distinguishing photo-responsive behaviors (weak photochromic performance for 1, excellent photochromic properties for 2 and non-photochromism for 3). This study indicates that an appropriate ICT is beneficial for PIET, but too weak or too strong ICT is not conducive to PIET, which provides an effective strategy for the construction of functional CPs with distinguishing photo-responsive properties through the subtle balance of ICT and PIET. Powder electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions usually need adhesives for electrocatalytic performance tests, leading to the increase of resistance, reduction of catalyst loading, and easy stripping of the catalyst under long-time or high current operation. In this study, Ce-doped CoFe layered double hydroxides were uniformly grown on nickel foam by a one-step hydrothermal route. A nanostructured self-supported electrode Ce-CoFe-LDH/NF without adhesive was obtained directly, which has a regular nanoneedle morphology with a length of ∼1.2 μm and tip width of ∼20 nm. Adopting Ce3+ ions with a large radius to partially displace Fe3+ ions with a small radius produced lattice distortion and more defects in the host layer of CoFe-LDH, whereby possessing the great potential to enhance catalytic behaviors. Once used as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction, Ce-CoFe-LDH/NF shows an outstanding electrocatalytic performance, including an optimized overpotential of 225 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a decreased Tafel slope of 34.34 mV dec−1, and a low charge transfer impedance of 2.4 Ω in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Moreover, the overpotential of the working electrode increased by only 0.04 V after 24 hours and was maintained at a current density of 50 mA cm−2. These results demonstrate a low-cost strategy compared to using noble metal OER electrocatalysts.
