The lanthanide metal organic framework compounds [Ln(BPTA)1.5(Bpy)]·0.5DMF (Ln = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy; 1a–5a) and [Ln(BPTA)1.5(Phen)]·0.5DMF (Ln = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy; 1b–5b) were prepared by employing 2,5-bis(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)terephthalic acid (2,5-BPTA) as the primary ligand and 2,2′-bipyridine (1a–5a) and 1,10-phenanthroline (1b–5b) as the secondary ligands. Single-crystal structural studies on [Gd(BPTA)1.5(Bpy)]·0.5DMF (3a) and [Dy(BPTA)1.5(Phen)]·0.5DMF (5b) indicated that the compounds have a two-dimensional structure. The Y compound exhibits blue emission, and the other compounds exhibit emission in the expected regions (λex = 350 nm). White light emission was achieved by careful mixing of the red (Eu3+) and green (Tb3+) components in the blue emitting Y compound. Thus, Y0.96Tb0.02Eu0.02 (bpy) and Y0.939Tb0.06Eu0.001 (phen) were found to show white emission when excited using a wavelength of 350 nm. The introduction of N–N-containing ancillary ligands (i.e., bpy and phen) increased the overall quantum yield (QY) of white light emission to 31% and 43%, respectively. The high QY observed for the Tb and Eu compounds was found to be sensitive and selective for the fluorometric detection of azinphos-methyl pesticide and trinitrophenol (TNP) in an aqueous medium at the ppb level. The same behaviour was observed when utilising the compounds as onsite paper strip sensors. Their magnetic properties were also studied, revealing for the Tb and Dy derivatives slow relaxation of the magnetisation at low temperature. The present study highlights the usefulness of rigid π-conjugated molecules such as 2,2′-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline in enhancing the many utilities of rare-earth-containing MOFs towards white light emission, the sensing of harmful and dangerous substances and magnetic properties. By selecting a bisphosphonic ligand H4L (H4L = 4-F-C6H4CH2N(CH2PO3H2)2) and a coligand oxalate (H2C2O4), three isostructural lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) with a 2D layer structure, [Ln(H3L)(C2O4)]·2H2O (Ln = Eu (1), Gd (2), or Tb (3)), were hydrothermally prepared. By tuning the molar ratio of Eu3+, Gd3+, and Tb3+ in the above reactions, six bimetallic or trimetallic doped Ln-MOFs (EuxTb1−x (x = 0.02 (4), 0.04 (5), and 0.06 (6)), Gd0.94Eu0.06 (7), Gd0.96Tb0.04 (8) and Gd0.95Tb0.03Eu0.02 (9)) were obtained. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns of doped Ln-MOFs 4–9 show that they are isomorphous with 1–3. The bimetallic doped Ln-MOFs show a gradual variation of luminous colors between yellow-green, yellow, orange, pink, and light blue. Meanwhile, the trimetallic doped Gd0.95Tb0.03Eu0.02 Ln-MOF (9) displays near white-light emission with a quantum yield of 11.39%. Interestingly, the luminous inks of 1–9 are invisible and color tunable, which makes it possible to promote their anti-counterfeiting applications. Additionally, 3 displays good thermal, water, and pH stabilities, which provides the feasibility for its sensing application. The luminescence sensing experiments show that 3 can serve as a highly selective, reusable, and ratiometric luminescent sensor of sulfamethazine (SMZ). Moreover, 3 shows an excellent SMZ detection performance in real samples, such as mariculture water and real urine. In this paper, we report the successful assembly of achiral {Ln6M} ([Ln6M(μ3-OH)8(acac)12(CH3O)x(CH3OH)y], Ln = La, M = Mn, Co, Fe) and chiral {Nd9Fe2} ([Nd9Fe2(μ4-O)(μ3-OH)14(acac)16(NO3)(CH3OH)2(H2O)3]) rare earth clusters using achiral rigid ligands and a transition metal doping strategy. {Ln6M} can be viewed as the fusion of two {Ln3M} tetrahedrons by sharing vertices. {Nd9Fe2} results from the fusion of four {Ln3M} tetrahedrons by vertice and edge sharing. The substitution of Ln with transition metal leads to changes in the coordination pattern around neighboring Ln, which triggers the switch of metal center chirality. This study demonstrates the potentiality of utilizing transition metal doping and rigid ligand to control the chirality of rare earth clusters. Indium-111 (111In) is a diagnostic radiometal that is important in nuclear medicine for single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). In order to apply this radiometal, it needs to be stably chelated and conjugated to a targeting vector that delivers it to diseased tissue. Identifying effective chelators that are capable of binding and retaining [111In]In3+ in vivo is an important research area. In this study, two 18-membered macrocyclic chelators, py-macrodipa and py2-macrodipa, were investigated for their ability to form stable coordination complexes with In3+ and to be effectively radiolabeled with [111In]In3+. The In3+ complexes of these two chelators were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and density functional theory calculations. These studies show that both py-macrodipa and py2-macrodipa form 8-coordinate In3+ complexes and attain an asymmetric conformation, consistent with prior studies on this ligand class with small rare earth metal ions. Spectrophotometric titrations were carried out to determine the thermodynamic stability constants (log KML) of [In(py-macrodipa)]+ and [In(py2- macrodipa)]+, which were found to be 18.96(6) and 19.53(5), respectively, where the values in parentheses are the errors of the last significant figures obtained from the standard deviation from three independent replicates. Radiolabeling studies showed that py-macrodipa and py2-macrodipa can quantitatively be radiolabeled with [111In]In3+ at 25 °C within 5 min, even at ligand concentrations as low as 1 μM. The in vitro stability of the radiolabeled complexes was investigated in human serum at 37 °C, revealing that ∼90% of [111In][In(py-macrodipa)]+ and [111In][In(py2-macrodipa)]+ remained intact after 7 days. The biodistribution of these radiolabeled complexes in mice was investigated, showing lower uptake in the kidneys, liver, and blood at the 24 h mark compared to [111In]InCl3. Novel heteroleptic anilate-based lanthanide MOFs (LnIII = Tb, Dy, Ho) have been obtained under hydrothermal conditions by the ancillary ligand synthetic strategy. These structurally isomorphous species contain octacoordinated LnIII ions with coordination polyhedra approaching an ideal D2d symmetry, best described by a distorted biaugmented trigonal prismatic C2v geometry. The impact of substituents at the 4- and 7-positions of 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamides on the photophysical properties of the ligands and their coordination compounds with the lanthanide triad--europium, gadolinium, and terbium--was analyzed. This study demonstrates how modification of the electronic nature of ligands through the incorporation of diverse functional groups affects the luminescence properties of their complexes. The introduction of various substituents leads to the appearance of intra-ligand or ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (CT) states. The highest luminescence efficiency was observed for LH·Eu(NO3)3 (Qin = 54.1% and QL = 9.6%), suggesting strong luminescence quenching of the CT state. It was found that a relatively low ΔE (-3000 cm-1) supports direct energy transfer from S1 to T1 bypassing the CT state, even though it is outside Reinhoudt's optimal range. In this work, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and Aspergillus sp. laccase (LC) were encapsulated in situ within two lanthanide-based MOFs (TbBTC and GdBTC) through a green one-pot synthesis (almost neutral aqueous solution, T = 25 °C, and atmospheric pressure) in about 1 h. Pristine MOFs and protein-encapsulated MOFs were characterized through wide angle X-ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopies. The location of immobilized BSA molecules, used as a model protein, was investigated through small angle X-ray scattering. BSA occurs both on the inner and on the outer surface of the MOFs. LC@TbBTC, and LC@GdBTC samples were also characterized in terms of specific activity, kinetic parameters, and storage stability both in water and acetate buffer. The specific activity of LC@TbBTC was almost twice that of LC@GdBTC (10.8 μmol min-1 mg-1vs. 6.6 μmol min-1 mg-1). Both biocatalysts showed similar storage stabilities retaining -60% of their initial activity after 7 days and -20% after 21 days. LC@TbBTC dispersed in acetate buffer exhibited a higher storage stability than LC@GdBTC. Additionally, terbium-based MOFs showed interesting luminescent properties. Together, these findings suggest that TbBTC and GdBTC are promising supports for the in situ immobilization of proteins and enzymes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reaction of Ln(NO3)2·6H2O (Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Tm and Yb) with the respective enantiopure (R)-(−)-2-phenylbutyric or (S)-(+)-2-phenylbutyric acid (R/S-2-HPhBut) and 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Bphen) allows the isolation of chiral dinuclear compounds of the formula [Ln2(μ-R/S-2-PhBut)4(R/S-2PhBut)2(Bphen)2] where Ln = Nd3+ (R/S-Nd-a), Sm3+ (R/S-Sm-a), Eu3+ (R/S-Eu-a), Tb3+ (R/S-Tb-a and R/S-Tb-b), Dy3+ (R/S-Dy-a and R/S-Dy-b), Tm3+ (R/S-Tm-b) and Yb3+ (R/S-Yb-b). Single crystal X-ray diffraction was performed for compounds S-Eu-a and S-Tm-b. Powder crystal X-ray diffraction was performed for all complexes. From the crystallographic data two different structural motifs were found which are referred to as structure type a and structure type b. In structure type a, the Ln3+ atoms are bridged through four R or S-2-PhBut ligands with two different kinds of coordination modes whereas in structure type b the two Ln3+ atoms are bridged through four R or S-2-PhBut ligands showing only one kind of coordination mode. For those lanthanide ions exhibiting both structure types, Tb3+ and Dy3+, a difference in the luminescence and magnetism behavior is observed. All compounds (except R/S-Tm-b) exhibit sensitized luminescence, notably the Eu3+ and Tb3+ analogues. Circular Dichroism (CD) and Circular Polarized Luminescence (CPL) in the solid state and in 1 mM dichloromethane (DCM) solutions are reported, leading to improved chiroptical properties for the DCM solutions. The asymmetry factor (glum) in 1 mM DCM is ±0.02 (+ for R-Eu-a) for the magnetically allowed transition 5D0 → 7F1 and ±0.03 (+ for R-Tb-a and R-Tb-b) for the 5D4 → 7F5 transition. Magnetic properties of all compounds were studied and the Dy3+ compound with the structural motif b (R-Dy-b) shows Single Molecular Magnet (SMM) behavior under a 0 T magnetic field. The speciation and mobility of rare earth elements (REE) strongly depends on pH, which controls the formation of charged aqueous hydroxyl species. The latter potentially play an important role in controlling heavy REE adsorption on clay minerals in near-neutral to alkaline waters such as in regolith-hosted REE mineral deposits. However, accurate REE hydrolysis constants are needed for developing geochemical models that can predict the role of these charged species in natural systems. Here, we develop a robust experimental UV-Vis spectrophotometric method using m-cresol purple to determine in situ pH from 25 to 75 °C. This method is used to derive the average ligand number and hydrolysis constants of erbium (Er) at 25 °C in aqueous solutions with low ionic strength (≤0.001 mol L−1) at pH from ∼7 to 9.5 and in the presence of Er concentrations from 0 to 0.057 mM. The average ligand number ranges between 1 and 3 indicating that Er(OH)2+, Er(OH)2+ and Er(OH) 03 control speciation in the experiments. The logarithm of the Er hydrolysis constants (, n = 1 to 3) derived at infinite dilution for the reaction Er3+ + nH2O = Er(OH)n3−n + nH+ are: , ,. Implementation of these experimental data into a geochemical model indicates that the Er(OH)2+ and Er(OH) 03 species are both stable in a much wider pH range than previously predicted. Consequently, the positively charged REE hydroxyl complexes can potentially control the fractionation of light vs. heavy REE via adsorption as observed in the formation of certain regolith-hosted REE deposits. In this work we report the synthesis, structural characterization and magnetic properties of a family of butterfly complexes {Cr2Ln2} with Ln = Tb (4), Ho (5), Er (6), Tm (7) and Yb (8), extending the family of previously reported isostructural compounds with Gd (1), Dy (2) and Y (3). As in 1 and 2, an anti-ferromagnetic Cr(III)–Ln(III) exchange interaction is found. For oblate ions 4 and 5, SMM behavior with a purely Orbach relaxation mechanism is observed with thermal barriers of 38 cm−1 (4) and 32 cm−1 (5). Complex 4 displays hysteresis opening up to 2.4 K with loss of magnetization at zero field. The prolate complex ions 6 and 7 are field-induced SMM's with dominant Orbach, direct and QTM relaxation mechanisms. Compound 8 did not show SMM properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The syntheses, structures, luminescence and magnetic properties of a new series of Ln(III) complexes of the formula [Ln(L)(H2O)2(DMF)2][Ln(L)2] (in which H2L is N,N′-ethylaminebis[1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-formylimino-2-pyrazoline-5-one]; Ln(III) – Gd (1), Tb (2), or Dy (3) ions). The crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements for all the above-mentioned complexes. The crystals of these compounds consist of cationic [Ln(L)(H2O)2(DMF)2]+ and anionic [Ln(L)2] moieties which form a 3D supramolecular architecture by the H-bonds and electrostatic forces. Luminescence emission in the visible range was observed for Tb(III) and Dy(III) compounds upon ligand sensitization, with moderate quantum yields of 3.2% for the Dy complex and 24.2% for the Tb analogue. Moreover the Tb(III) complex demonstrates triboluminescence activity. The dynamic magnetization studies revealed that 1 and 2 demonstrate field-induced magnetic relaxation with effective energy barriers, ΔE‖kB = 24 K (for 1) and 85 K (for 2), while the Dy complex 3 exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization in zero field with an activation energy of 256 K. An in situ hydrolysis of the P–Cl bonds of the carbophosphazene [{NC(NMe2)}2{NPCl2}] (LPCl2) in the presence of hydrated lanthanide(III) nitrates in a dichloromethane and methanol (2 : 1) solvent mixture afforded a series of novel 1D coordination polymers: [{Ln(LHPO2)3(NO3)2(CH3OH)(H2O)} (Cl)]n {where Ln(III) = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3), or Er (4) and LHPO2 is the hydrolyzed carbophosphazene (LPCl2) ligand}. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that complexes 1–4 are isostructural and crystallized in the monoclinic crystal system having P21/c space group. The coordination polymers are formed because of the involvement of the geminal P(O)(OH) moieties of the carbophosphazene ligand. Each lanthanide(III) ion is 9-coordinate (9O) in a distorted muffin geometry. Magnetic measurements revealed that both DyIII and ErIII analogues exhibit field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior at 0.8 kOe and 2.2 k Oe, respectively. At such dc fields, the dynamic magnetic susceptibility displays complex behavior with a triple magnetic relaxation contribution for 3, while two contributions were identified for 4. The observed static and dynamic magnetic behavior for complexes 1–4 were further rationalized with the aid of BS-DFT and CASSCF/SO-RASSI/SINGLE_ANISO calculations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two lanthanide complexes with formulae [DyIII(LN5)(pentafluoro-PhO)3] (1) and [DyIII(LN5)(2,6-difluoro-PhO)2](BPh4) (2) (LN5 = 2,14-dimethyl-3,6,10,13,19-pentaazabicyclo[13.3.1]nonadecal (19),2,13,15,17-pentaene) were structurally and magnetically characterized. DyIII ions lie in the cavity of a five coordinate nitrogen macrocycle, and in combination with the introduction of multi-fluorinated monodentate phenoxyl coligands a high axiality coordination symmetry is built. Using the pentafluorophenol co-ligand, complex 1 with a D2d coordination environment, is obtained and displays moderate single-molecule magnets (SMMs) behavior. When difluorophenol co-ligands were used, a higher local axisymmetric pentagonal bipyramidal coordination geometry was observed in complex 2, which displays apparent slow magnetic relaxation behavior with a hysteresis temperature of up to 5 K. Further magnetic studies of diluted samples combined with ab initio calculations indicate that the high axiality plays a crucial role in suppressing quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) and consequently results in good slow magnetic relaxation behavior. Different fluoro-substituted phenoxyl co-ligands have phenoloxy oxygen atoms with different electrostatic potentials as well as a different number of phenoloxy coligands along the magnetic axis, resulting in different ligand field strengths and coordination symmetries. Development of advanced luminescent nanomaterials and technologies is of great significance for anti-counterfeiting applications in global economy, security, and human health, but has proved to be a great challenge. In this work, we design, synthesize, and characterize mono-disperse, dumbbell-shaped lanthanide-doped NaYF4@NaGdF4 core–shell nanoparticles (CSNPs) with dual-mode fluorescence by coating the NaGdF4:Ln′3+ shell onto NaYF4:Ln3+ core nanospheres via a two-step oleic acid mediated thermal decomposition process. Different from the conventional synthesis method to produce spherical nanoparticles, the epitaxial growth of the NaGdF4:Ln′3+ shell onto the nanosphere cores and the lattice mismatch between β-NaGdF4 and β-NaYF4 nanocrystals enable the formation of dumbbell-shaped CSNPs, as evidenced by the morphological evolution of CSNPs and as explained by the Ostwald ripening growth mechanism. By tailoring different doped lanthanide ions in the core and the shell, the resultant CSNPs exhibit tunable but different up-/down-conversion luminescence under the irradiation of a 980 nm laser and 254 nm UV light, respectively. Finally, these hydrophilic CSNPs are further fabricated into environmentally benign luminescent inks for inkjet printing to create a variety of dual-mode fluorescent patterns (peacock, temple, and a logo of "Hunan University of Technology") on different paper-based substrates (A4 paper, envelope, and postcard). Polychromatic emission can be achieved by controlling the distribution of the rare earth activator in multi-cation lattices, which can be used in the fields of white light LED and fluorescence temperature sensing. However, it is still a challenge to control their distribution and location of the target site in a given host material because the distribution of the rare earth activator is uncertain. In this paper, we have chosen Li4SrCa(SiO4)2 as the multi-cation site host and induced the distribution of Eu2+ ions between different cation sites through anion substitution, for the first time, to regulate the luminescence characteristics of a series of Li4SrCaSi2O8-yN2y/3:Eu2+ phosphors. In Li4SrCa(SiO4)2:Eu2+ phosphors, the substitution of O2- by N3- triggered a distinct ordered to disordered structure transition of the SiO4 tetrahedron and induced the remote distribution of the Eu2+ activator, which was verified through the analysis of the XRD, EPR, FT-IR and fluorescence spectra. Due to the location of Eu2+ ions in different cation sites (Eu2+ Sr and Eu2+ Ca), two distinguishable emission peaks with tunable color emissions and different responses to temperature were realized. The white LED that utilized blue-orange-emitting Li4SrCaSi2O4N8/3:Eu2+ and green-emitting BaSi2O2N2:Eu2+ (500 nm) displayed an outstanding color rendering index (Ra) of 85.1. Based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique, an optical temperature measurement mechanism was hypothesized and studied in the temperature range of 293-473 K. The highest Sa of the material was 0.086 K-1, and Sr was 1.76% K-1 based on the FIR detection technology, revealing obviously better than most inorganic optical temperature-measuring materials reported before. The reduction of titanocene dichloride Cp2TiCl2 with lanthanide metals has led to the discovery of a surprising lanthanide effect: while with most lanthanides, a divalent [Cp2Ti] equivalent was obtained, the use of samarium or ytterbium only led to the reduction to trivalent [Cp2TiCl]-type complexes, including the structurally characterized heterobimetallic complex [Cp2Ti(μ-Cl)2SmCl2(THF)3]. These results were corroborated by reactivity studies (alkyne coupling and radical reactions), EPR spectroscopy and electrospray mass spectrometry, providing new insights into the reduction chemistry of lanthanide metals. Lanthanide clusters with high magnetic entropy and an exquisite structure have always been a hot research direction. Herein, two delicately structured lanthanide clusters were synthesized using isonicotinic acid (HIN) as a ligand by the solvothermal method, namely {[Gd4(IN)4(μ3-OH)4(OAc)2(H2O)6]·Cl2·7H2O}n (1) and {[Dy4(IN)4(μ3-OH)4(OAc)2(H2O)6]·Cl2·8H2O}n (2). Structural analysis indicates that the two compounds exhibit comparable structures, and both have the same cubane-like Ln4 metal skeleton and form an interesting dragonfly molecular configuration by connecting to HIN. Moreover, {Ln4} serves as the fundamental structural unit for the construction of a 1D channel of 1, with a diameter of approximately 10.08 Å, which is connected to each other by extra {Ln4} units to form an exquisite porous 3D structure of 1. Cl− exists as an anion-template in its 3D structure, balancing the charge and maintaining its structural stability. Lanthanide luminescence is characterised by "forbidden" 4f–4f transitions and a complicated electronic structure. Our understanding of trivalent lanthanide(III) ion luminescence is centered on Eu3+ because absorbing and emitting transitions in Eu3+ occur from a single electronic energy level. In Sm3+ both absorbing and emitting multiplets have a larger multiplicity. A band arising in transitions from the first emitting state multiplet to the ground state multiplet will have nine lines for a Sm3+ complex. In this study, high-resolution emission and excitation spectra were used to determine the electronic energy levels for the lowest multiplet and first emitting multiplet in four Sm3+ compounds with either tricapped trigonal prismatic TTP or capped square antiprismatic cSAP coordination polyhedra but different site symmetry. This was achieved by the use of Boltzmann distribution population analysis and experimentally determined transition probabilities from emission and excitation spectra. Using this analysis it was possible to show the effect of changing three oxygen atoms with three nitrogen atoms in the donor set for two compounds with the same coordination polyhedra and site symmetry. Rare earth elements (REE) include the lanthanides (La–Lu), Y, and Sc which are critical elements for the green energy transition. The REE show a decrease in ionic radii with increased atomic numbers, which results in a so-called lanthanide contraction systematically affecting crystal structures and mineral properties. Here we present a compilation of reference Raman spectra of ten REE sesquioxides (A-, B- and C-type), five REE hydroxides, eight xenotime-structured REE phosphate endmembers and two solid solutions, seven monazite-structured REE phosphate endmembers and two solid solutions and seven rhabdophane endmembers with up to five Ce1−xLREEx rhabdophane solid solutions (LREE = La–Gd). Raman mode assignment is based on a detailed literature review summarizing existing analytical work and theoretical calculations and systematic trends observed in this study by analyzing different REE-bearing solids. The wavenumbers of the main REE-O Raman band systematically increase with decreasing ionic radii forming discrete linear trends within isostructural mineral groups, that can be used to estimate the REE-O mode in other solids with known REE-O coordination numbers. Photoluminescence using 266 nm, 532 nm and 633 nm excitation laser wavelengths for REE-bearing oxides, hydroxides, anhydrous and hydrous phosphates is also presented providing a new framework for identifying REE-phases in phosphate-bearing natural mineral deposits. Lanthanide luminescence is dominated by quenching by high-energy oscillators in the chemical environment. The rate of non-radiative energy transfer to a single H2O molecule coordinated to a Eu3+ ion exceeds the usual rates of emission by an order of magnitude. We know these rates, but the details of these energy transfer processes are yet to be established. In this work, we study the quenching rates of [Eu(D2O)9]3+ and [Eu(DOTA)(D2O)]− in H2O/D2O mixtures by sequentially exchanging the deuterons with protons. Flash freezing the solutions allows us to identify species with various D/H contents in solution and thus to quantify the energy transfer processes to individual OH-oscillators. This is not possible in solution due to fast exchange in the ensembles present at room temperature. We conclude that the energy transfer processes are accurately described, predicted, and simulated using a step-wise addition of the rates of quenching by each O–H oscillator. This documents the sequential increase in the rate of the energy transfer processes in the quenching of lanthanide luminescence, and further provides a methodology to identify isotopic impurities in deuterated lanthanide systems in solution. Molecular spin qubits have demonstrated immense potential in quantum information science research due to the addressability of electron spins using microwave frequencies, and the scalability and tunability of molecular systems. Exemplary in this regard is the holmium polyoxometalate, [Na9Ho(W5O18)2]·35H2O (HoW10), which features an accessible atomic clock transition at 9.4 GHz; however, the coherence time of this molecule is limited by spin-phonon coupling driven decoherence processes. To limit these decoherence pathways, materials need to be designed to reduce energy overlap between spin and phonon states, and this necessitates developing a better understanding on how structural modifications impact the vibrational landscape for classes of complexes. Herein we conducted a full investigation into the fundamental structural and vibrational properties of the lanthanide Lindqvist polyoxometalate series, [Na9Ln(W5O18)2]·xH2O (Ln = La(III)–Lu(III), except Pm(III)) (LnW10), to assess how structural changes effect vibrational characteristics and to elucidate pathways to improve the coherence properties of HoW10. Single crystal X-ray diffraction results revealed four distinct structural polymorphs in complexes 1–14 wherein first coordination spheres were identical, and differences manifested as changes in lattice packing. Interestingly, the subtle changes in packing exhibited by the four polymorphs were found to impact distortions away from ideal D4d symmetry for each of the LnW10 complexes. Raman and far-infrared (FIR) spectra of complexes 1–14 were collected to identify vibrational modes present in low energy regions and peak fitting assignments were made according to literature precedents. Qualitative and Partial least squares (PLS) analysis show correlations between complex structural parameters with the low energy Raman and FIR vibrational modes of interest. Overall, this investigation shows that the second coordination sphere plays an integral role in modulation of the structural and vibrational characteristics of LnW10 complexes, which makes it a viable route for tuning spin and vibrational manifolds of species within this series. Three new hetero-metallic CuII-LnIII complexes [(CuL)Gd(NO3)3(CH3OH)]n (1), [(CuL)Tb(NO3)3(H2O)]· [CuL] (2) and [(CuL)Dy(NO3)3(H2O)]·[CuL] (3) have been synthesized using a mono-nuclear Cu(II) complex, [CuL], of an unsymmetrically di-condensed N2O3 donor Schiff base ligand, N-(3-methoxysalicylidene)-N-(salicylidene)-1,2-ethylenediamine (H2L). Single crystal X-ray crystallography revealed that complex 1 is a nitrate bridged 1D chain of dinuclear Cu(II)-Gd(III) units whereas in 2 and 3, the dinuclear Cu(II)-Ln(III) units are co-crystallized with a [CuL] unit. The Ln(III) centers are nine coordinated with the geometry of a spherical capped square antiprism for Gd and spherical tricapped trigonal prism for Tb and Dy. The geometry of the Cu(II) center is distorted octahedral for complex 1 and distorted square planar for complexes 2 and 3. Temperature-dependent molar magnetic susceptibility measurements in 1-3 revealed the presence of overall ferromagnetic coupling between the Cu(II) and Ln(III) centers. Notably, field induced single-molecule magnet behavior was witnessed in the Tb(III) derivative (2). The ab initio calculations indicated that upon application of an external magnetic field, the tunneling in the ground state of complex 2 gets reduced and thereby field-induced SMM behaviour is observed. Besides, in the case of complex 1, BS-DFT calculations were carried out to gain further insights into the magnetic exchange coupling interactions between the Cu(II) and Gd(III) centers. Luminescent materials with dynamic color transformation demonstrate significant potential in advanced information encryption and anti-counterfeiting. In this study, we designed multi-color luminescent lanthanide metallogels featuring time-dependent color transformation. These materials are based on Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) platforms, facilitating cascade energy transfer from the ligand 4,4′,4′′-[1,3,5-benzenetriyltris (carbonylimino)]trisbenzoic acid (H3L) to Tb3+ ions and subsequently to Sulforhodamine 101. The emission color of the gels can be readily adjusted by the introduction of HCl, transitioning from initial green, yellow, light red, and red hues to blue, violet, pink, and deep red, respectively. Importantly, the color change in these gels is time-dependent, controlled by the hydrolysis time of glucono-δ-lactone, which modulates the luminescence intensity of H3L, Tb3+, and Sulforhodamine 101. Exploiting these characteristics, we developed methods for information encryption utilizing 3D color codes and anti-counterfeiting flower patterns. These patterns undergo time-dependent transformations, generating a series of 3D codes and flower patterns that can only be recognized in a predetermined manner. A novel series of one-dimensional coordination polymers (CPs) is achieved via a facile one-pot synthesis strategy employing the nitrate salts of trivalent lanthanides, a pentadentate chelating ligand, and triphenylphosphine oxide at a controlled stoichiometry under ambient conditions. All the CPs are characterized comprehensively using spectroscopic, X-ray crystallographic and magnetometric studies. The CPs are found to be thermally stable up to a significantly high temperature and resistant to water for an indefinite time. They are photoactive and exhibit selective fluoride ion (F-) sensing with excellent efficiency both colorimetrically and fluorimetrically in the solid-state as well as in solution. The presence of F- concomitantly sensitizes the photoluminescence enhancement and visual decolourization of the CPs in solution owing to the ground-state intra-molecular proton transfer. The photophysical response of the CPs to F- in solution was found to be instantaneous (<30 s). The sensitivity of detection is observed to be significantly high over a wide range of F- concentrations, covering the beneficial and detrimental domains of F- concentrations in drinking water. The limit of detection (LoD) under ambient conditions was found to be in the micromolar (µM) range--the best being 0.22 µM found using UV-vis spectrometry and 7.5 µM using fluorimetry. In comparison, the USEPA standard cut-off for the upper limit of F- concentration in drinking water is 211 µM, and the LoD of measuring F- concentration using the USEPA standard method using a fluoride-selective electrode is 26.3 µM. The CPs display markedly high selectivity toward F- with negligible-to-no interference from the commonly abundant ions (Cl-, Br-, I-, CH3CO2-, CO32-, SO42-,HPO42-, NH4+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+) in terms of UV-vis spectral change. Separation of lanthanide (Ln) and minor actinide (MA) elements and mutual separation between minor actinide elements (e.g. Am(III) and Cm(III)) represent a crucial undertaking. However, separating these elements poses a significant challenge owing to their highly similar physicochemical properties. Asymmetric N-heterocyclic ligands such as N-ethyl-6-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-N-(p-tolyl)picolinamide (Et-p-Tol-A-PzPy) and N-ethyl-N-(p-tolyl)-1,10-phenanthroline-2-carboxamide (ETPhenAm) have recently received considerable attention in the separation of MAs over Ln from acid solutions. By changing the central skeleton structures of these ligands and introducing substituents with different properties on the side chains, their complexation behavior with Am(III), Cm(III), and Eu(III) may be affected. In this work, we explore four different asymmetric N-containing heterocyclic ligands, namely Et-p-Tol-A-PzPy (L¹), N-ethyl-6'-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-N-(p-tolyl)-[2,2'-bipyridine]-6-carboxamide (L²), N-ethyl-9-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-N-(ptolyl)-1,10-phenanthroline-2-carboxamide (L³), and ETPhenAm (L4) using density functional theory (DFT). The calculated results demonstrate the potential of ligands L¹-L4 for the extraction and separation of Am(III), Cm(III), and Eu(III). Ligand analysis shows that ligand L³ binds more easily to the central metal atom, in line with the stronger extraction capacity of L³. In spite of the higher covalence between the side chain and the central metal atom for complexes with L¹-L³, the main chain seems to control the stability of the extraction complexes. The preorganized 1,10-phenanthroline backbone also further enhances the extraction performance of L³ and L4. The difference in coordination ability between the side chain donors of these ligands and metal ions may affect their separation efficiency. Near-infrared (NIR) emissive probes are becoming increasingly popular in biological sensing and imaging due to the advantages of non-invasiveness and deep tissue-penetrating ability. Herein, a series of complexes of trivalent lanthanide ions (Ln = Yb, Er, and Gd) with the commercially available azo dye chromophore 2R (Na2H2C2R) as ligand and featuring respectively H2O and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as ancillary ligands have been prepared. Formulated as [Ln2(HC2R)2(H2O)10]·8H2O (1-3, Ln = Yb, Er, Gd) and [Ln2(HC2R)2(DMSO)10]·2DMSO (4-6, Ln = Yb, Er, Gd), their structures have been determined by singlecrystal X-ray diffraction studies. Photophysical property studies revealed NIR emissions of the DMSO complexes characteristic of Yb(III) and Er(III), effectively sensitized by the dye ligand arising mainly from the π-π* transition of the chromophore. The long-wavelength excitation of the complexes, covering the whole visible-light range and extending into the NIR region, portends the potential applications of such complexes for flexible bioimaging and sensing. Phosphors with intrinsic white light emission are of great potential in constructing high-quality white LEDs (WLEDs). In this work, we propose the use of energy transfer from Bi3+ to Eu3+ ions for white light emission. A unique Bi3+-activated phosphor LaGdO3 (LGO):Bi3+ was generated using the conventional high-temperature solid-state process. An energy transfer was established by introducing Eu3+ into the phosphor composition. The emission colour of LGO:Bi3+,Eu3+ phosphors changes from cyan to white to orange-red depending on the Bi3+/Eu3+ doping proportion. The energy transfer between the Bi3+ and Eu3+ ions results from the dipole–dipole interaction. The LGO:Bi3+,Eu3+ phosphors were combined with a near-ultraviolet chip to successfully create a single-component WLED device with a colour-rendering index of 92.4. Our work demonstrates the energy transfer as a route for single-component white light emission and makes LGO:Bi3+,Eu3+ phosphors one of the candidate materials for near-ultraviolet lighting. To study the effect of diamagnetic ions on magnetic interactions, utilizing a compartmental ligand (Z)-2-(hydroxymethyl)-4-methyl-6-((quinolin-8-ylimino)methyl)phenol (LH2), two different series of ZnII–LnIII complexes, namely the trinuclear series of [DyZn2(L)2(μ2-OAc)2(CH3OH)2]·NO3·MeOH (1), [TbZn2(L)2(μ2-OAc)2(CH3OH)2]·NO3·5MeOH·H2O (2), and [GdZn2(L)2(μ2-OAc)2(CH3OH)2]·NO3·MeOH·CHCl3 (3) and the tetranuclear series of [Dy2Zn2(LH)4(NO3)4(μ2OAc)]·NO3·MeOH·H2O (4), [Tb2Zn2(LH)4(NO3)4(μ2-OAc)]·NO3·MeOH·2H2O (5), and [Gd2Zn2(LH)4(NO3)4(μ2-OAc)]·NO3·MeOH·2H2O (6), were synthesized. Trinuclear ZnII–LnIII complexes 1–3 consist of one LnIII ion sandwiched between two peripheral ZnII ions forming a bent type ZnII–DyIII–ZnII array with an angle of 110.64°. Tetranuclear ZnII–LnIII complexes 4–6 are basically a combination of two dinuclear moieties of [LnZn(LH)2(NO3)2]+ connected by one bidentate bridging acetate ion in μ2-OAc coordination mode. The detailed magnetic analysis reveals that complexes 1 and 4 are single molecule magnets having energy barriers of 34.98 K and 46.71 K with relaxation times (τ0) of 5.05 × 10−4 s and 5.24 × 10−4 s, respectively. Ab initio calculations were employed to analyze the magnetic anisotropy and magnetic exchange interaction between the ZnII and LnIII centers with the aim of gaining better insights into the magnetic dynamics of complexes 1–6. A systematic study of the impact on the chemical reactivity of the oxidising n-dodecane radical cation (RH˙+) with f-element complexed 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (HEH[EHP]) has been undertaken utilizing time-resolved electron pulse radiolysis/transient absorption spectroscopy and high-level quantum mechanical calculations. Lanthanide ion complexed species, [Ln((HEH[EHP])2)3], exhibited vastly increased reactivity (over 10× faster) in comparison to the non-complexed ligand in n-dodecane solvent, whose rate coefficient was k = (4.66 ± 0.22) × 109 M−1 s−1. Similar reactivity enhancement was also observed for the corresponding americium ion complex, k = (5.58 ± 0.30) × 1010 M−1 s−1. The vastly increased reactivity of these f-element complexes was not due to simple increased diffusion-control of these reactions; rather, enhanced hole transfer mechanisms for the complexes were calculated to become energetically more favourable. Interestingly, the observed reactivity trend with lanthanide ion size was not linear; instead, the rate coefficients showed an initial increase (Lu to Yb) followed by a decrease (Tm to Ho), followed by another increase (Dy to La). This behaviour was excellently predicted by the calculated reaction volumes of these complexes. Complementary cobalt-60 gamma irradiations for select lanthanide complexes demonstrated that the measured kinetic differences translated to increased ligand degradation at steady-state timescales, affording ∼38% increase in ligand loss of a 1 : 1 [La((HEH[EHP])2)3] : HEH[EHP] ratio system. Three non-symmetrical segmental ligand strands L4 can be wrapped around a linear sequence of one Zn2+ and two trivalent lanthanide cations Ln3+ to give quantitatively directional [ZnLn2(L4)3]8+ triple-stranded helicates in the solid state and in solution. NMR speciations in CD3CN show negligible decomplexation at a millimolar concentration and the latter helicate can be thus safely considered as a preorganized C3-symmetrical HHH-[(L43Zn)(LnA)(2−n)(LnB)n]8+ platform in which the thermodynamic properties of (i) lanthanide permutation between the central N9 and the terminal N6O3 binding sites and (ii) exchange processes between homo- and heterolanthanide helicates are easy to access (Ln = La, Eu, Lu). Deviations from statistical distributions could be programmed by exploiting specific site recognition and intermetallic pair interactions. Considering the challenging La3+ : Eu3+ ionic pair, for which the sizes of the two cations differ by only 8%, a remarkable excess (70%) of the heterolanthanide is produced, together with a preference for the formation of the isomer where the largest lanthanum cation lies in the central N9 site ([(La)(Eu)] : [(Eu)(La)] = 9 : 1). Compounds with the general formula RE3MO7 (RE = rare earth ions; M = Ta, Nb, Sb, Ru, Ir, Os, Re, etc.), crystallize as a fluorite-related structure, forming polymorphs with different space groups. The space group strongly depends on the RE3+ and M5+ ionic radii and processing conditions. Structural characterization is well-established for the lanthanide series, but literature studies have divergent views about how to attribute yttrium tantalate (Y3TaO7) space groups—some authors have described the Y3TaO7 structure as orthorhombic and belonging to space group C2221 or Ccmm, whereas others have assigned a cubic Fm3¯m structure to it. Here, we have characterized the structure of undoped and Eu3+-doped Y3TaO7 (0.1 to 50 mol% of Eu3+) samples synthesized by the sol–gel method that crystallized as a cubic disordered fluorite-type structure, space group Fm3¯m. Their powder X-ray diffraction measurements, Rietveld analyzes and Raman spectra were used as a conclusive technique of the structural properties. We have also investigated whether a secondary phase (M′-YTaO4) emerged in the samples and compared the phase composition of each sample to their Raman spectra. Low-temperature photoluminescence measurements (∼15 K) using Eu3+ as a structural probe helped us analyze the inhomogeneous broadening observed in the emission spectra. In this study, novel non-peripheral tetra-mercaptopyridine-substituted mono- and double-decker phthalocyanines (LuPc and LuPc2) containing lutetium(III) as a rare earth metal were synthesized and characterized using different spectroscopic techniques. ESR and electrochemical analyses were performed to support the sandwich structure of LuPc2. The g factor was determined to be 2.00039 and the characteristic first reduction couple at 0.29 V indicated a reduction of the radical Pc ring of LuPc2. In addition, the UV-Vis-NIR spectra of LuPc2 in neutral, reduced, and oxidized states demonstrate its intrinsic π-radical nature in CHCl3. The photophysicochemical properties of LuPc and LuPc2 were investigated in DMSO. It was found that mono-phthalocyanine (LuPc) is a more effective photosensitizer than double-decker (LuPc2) and metal-free (H2Pc) phthalocyanines based on a comparison of their photophysical and photochemical properties. The singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ) of the synthesized LuPc and LuPc2 compounds were calculated to be 0.57 and 0.14, respectively, and the obtained results were compared with H2Pc (ΦΔ = 0.04). Also, electrochemical measurements were performed to estimate their redox potentials and the results indicated the important electrochemical performance of double-decker phthalocyanine (LuPc2). The complex hydrolysis process and strong uncertainty of self-assembly rules have led to the precise synthesis of lanthanide clusters still being in the "blind-box" stage and simplifying the self-assembly process and developing reliable regulation strategies have attracted widespread attention. Herein, different anions are used to induce the construction of a series of dysprosium clusters with different shapes and connections. When the selected anion is NO3−, it blocks the coordination of metal sites around the cluster through the terminal group coordination mode, thereby controlling the growth of the cluster. When NO3− was changed to OAc−, OAc− adopted a bridging mode to induce modular units to build dysprosium clusters through an annular growth mechanism. Specifically, we selected 2-amino-6-methoxybenzoic acid, 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and Dy(NO3)3·6H2O to react under solvothermal conditions to obtain a pentanuclear dysprosium cluster (1). The five Dy(III) ions in 1 are distributed in upper and lower planes and are formed by the tight connection of nitrogen and oxygen atoms, and μ3-OH− bridges on the ligand. Next, octa-nuclear dysprosium cluster (2) were obtained by only regulating ligand substituents. The eight Dy(III) ions in 2 are tightly connected through ligand oxygen atoms, μ2-OH−, and μ3-OH− bridges, forming an elliptical {Dy/O} cluster core. Furthermore, only by changing NO3− to OAc−, a wheel-shaped tetradeca-nuclear dysprosium cluster (3) was obtained. Cluster 3 is composed of OAc− bridged multiple template Dy3L3 units and pulling of these template units connected by an annular growth mechanism forms a wheel-shaped cluster. The angle of the coordination site on NO3− is ∠ONO = 115°, which leads to the further extension of the metal sites on the periphery of clusters 1 and 2 through the terminal group coordination mode, thereby regulating the structural connection of the clusters. However, the angle of the coordination site on OAc− is ∠OCO = 128°, and a slightly increased angle leads to the formation of a ring-shaped cluster 3 by connecting the template units through bridging. This is a rare example of the controllable construction of lanthanide clusters with different shapes induced by the regulation of different anions, which provides a new method for the precise construction of lanthanide clusters with special shapes. The design and synthesis of a Gd(III) metal–organic framework with the formula [Gd4(BTDI)3(DMF)4]n (JXUST-40, H4BTDI = 5,5′-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)diisophthalic acid) are reported hererin. Interestingly, a reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal transition between JXUST-40 and {[Gd4(BTDI)3(H2O)4]·6H2O}n (JXUST-40a) was achieved under the stimulation of heat and solvents. Both JXUST-40 and JXUST-40a exhibited good stability when soaked in common solvents and aqueous solutions with pH values of 1–12. Magnetic studies showed that JXUST-40a has a larger magnetocaloric effect with –ΔS maxm = 26.65 J kg−1 K−1 at 2 K and 7 T than JXUST-40 due to its larger magnetic density. Structural analyses indicated that the coordinated solvent molecules play a crucial role in the coordination environment around the Gd(III) ions and the change in the framework, ultimately leading to the changes in the pore size and magnetism between JXUST-40 and JXUST-40a. Marbofloxacin (MB) is a newly developed fluoroquinolone antibiotic used especially as a veterinary drug. It may be regarded as the improved version of enrofloxacin owing to its antibacterial activity, enhanced bioavailability, and pharmacokinetic–pharmacodynamic (PK–PD) properties. In this study, nine heavy rare-earth ions (Y, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) were selected in light of their potential antibacterial activity and satisfactory biosafety to afford the corresponding rare-earth metal complexes of MB: the MB–Ln series. Their chemical structures and coordination patterns were characterized using IR spectroscopy, HRMS, TGA, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. Our results confirmed that all the MB–Ln complexes yielded the coincident coordination modes with four MB ligands coordinating to the Ln(III) center. In vitro antibacterial screening on five typical bacteria strains revealed that the MB–Ln complexes exhibited antibacterial activities comparable with MB, as indicated by the MIC/MBC values, in which Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi were the most sensitive ones to MB–Ln. Furthermore, the MB–Ln complexes were found to be much less toxic in vivo than MB, as suggested by the evaluated LD50 (50% lethal dose) values. All the MB–Ln series complexes fell in the LD50 range of 5000–15 000 mg kg−1, while the LD50 value of MB was only 1294 mg kg−1. Furthermore, MB–Lu, as the selected representative of MB–Ln, could effectively inhibit the activity of DNA gyrase, the same as MB, suggesting the primary antibacterial mechanism of the MB–Ln series. This study is focused on determining the type and quantity of REE impurities responsible for converting the structure of NdSc3(BO3)4 into an R32 polymorph. According to the single crystal X-ray diffraction of RxNdyScz(BO3)4 (R = Sm–Lu, x + y + z = 4) the samples probably contain several polymorphic modifications. However, the predominant structure has been defined as R32 for R = Eu, Er, Tm, and Yb and P3221 for R = Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho. Understanding factors that influence the volatility of lanthanide complexes remains an important goal for applications such as gas-phase f-metal separations and the synthesis of lanthanide-containing thin films. Lanthanide complexes often exhibit volatility differences that depend on the ability of ligands to saturate the lanthanide coordination sphere and attenuate intermolecular bonding in the solid state. This can make it difficult to assess how electronic factors associated with differing ligand substituents influence volatility. Here we describe the synthesis, structures, and thermal properties of a series of volatile lanthanide complexes (Ln = Nd, Er, and Yb) containing N4O3 ligands decorated with different alkyl and fluoroalkyl substituents (CF3, CF2CF2CF3, Me, and tBu). These ligands completely enveloped the tested lanthanides to form monomeric complexes with 7-coordinate distorted capped octahedral coordination geometries, as determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Thermogravimetric analysis and bulk sublimation studies show how metal encapsulation affords complexes with the same volatility regardless of metal size, even with lanthanide ions with significantly different radii such as Nd3+ and Yb3+. Most notably, the results show that increasing ligand fluorination, a strategy often used to increase the volatility of metal complexes, is not always beneficial and can significantly attenuate the volatility of lanthanide complexes depending on location with respect to other substituents in the ligand framework. A pair-wise model based on density functional theory shows that the net intermolecular interactions in the unit cell can still be stronger when fluorination is present. In other words, even if individual interactions between neighboring molecules are weaker, the total number of interactions in the solid arising from the nature of crystal packing is equally important to consider. A new family of phenanthroline ligands was prepared. Hydrolysis of 4,7-dihalogenated 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diamides in acidic media leads to the formation of the corresponding 4,7-oxygenated derivatives. These ligands can exist in different tautomeric forms. The tautomerism of 4,7-oxygenated phenanthroline diamides has been investigated using quantum chemical calculations. The unsymmetrical oxo-hydroxy tautomeric form was proved to be the most energetically advantageous according to the spectral data and X-ray analysis. It was shown that 4,7-difluoro derivatives undergo acid hydrolysis more easily when compared to 4,7-dichloro derivatives. The coordination chemistry of 4,7-oxygenated 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diamides toward some lanthanide nitrates was investigated. The structures of Ln-complexes thus formed were studied both in the solid state and in solution (XRD analysis and IR, NMR and UV spectroscopy). In the last two decades, efforts have been devoted to obtaining insight into the magnetic interactions between CuII and LnIII utilizing experimental and theoretical means. Experimentally, it has been observed that the exchange coupling (J) in CuII–LnIII systems is often found to be ferromagnetic for ≥4f7 metal ions. However, exchange interactions at sub-Kelvin temperatures between CuII and the anisotropic/isotropic LnIII ions are not often explored. In this report, we have synthesized a series of heterobimetallic [CuLn(HL)(μ-piv)(piv)2] complexes (LnIII = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3) and Er (4)) from a new compartmental Schiff base ligand, N,N'-bis(3-methoxy-5-methylsalicylidene)-1,3-diamino-2-propanol (H3L). X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals that all four complexes are isostructural and isomorphous. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal a ferromagnetic coupling between the CuII ion and its respective LnIII ion for all the complexes, as often observed. Moreover, μ-SQUID studies, at sub-Kelvin temperatures, show S-shaped hysteresis loops indicating the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling in complexes 1–3. The antiferromagnetic interaction is explained by considering the shortest Cu⋯Cu distance in the crystal structure. The nearly closed loops for 1–3 highlight their fast relaxation characteristics, while the opened loops for 4 might arise from intermolecular ordering. We present an approach for connecting the magnetic anisotropy of lanthanide mononuclear complexes with their f-orbital splitting for both idealized and real coordination environments. Our proposal is straightforward to apply and provides sensible estimations of the energy spacing of the ground multiplet for axial magnetic systems. This energy splitting controls Single-Molecule Magnet properties of lanthanide complexes, determining key parameters such as the demagnetization energy barrier (Ueff). Importantly, this approach is consistent with the current paradigm of oblate and prolate preferences for the distribution of the f-electron density, but delivers a finer description for ions belonging to the same group (e.g. the oblates TbIII and DyIII). The model provides simple explanations for some general trends observed experimentally (e.g. the low barriers for ErIII complexes in comparison to DyIII or the large barriers observed for cyclopentadienyl DyIII complexes in comparison with other ligands based on organometallic rings), contributing as a valuable tool to expand our description of ligand field effects in lanthanide-based SMMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new iminophosphonamine Ph2P(HNPbt)(NPbt) (1, HL) bearing chromophore 2-(phen-2′-yl)-1,3-benzothiazole (Pbt) substituents was synthesized and introduced into lanthanide complexes. It was found that salt metathesis reactions between KL (2) generated in situ and LnCl3 lead to the formation of tris-iminophosphonamide complexes [LnL2]L (Ln = Y (3), Sm (4), Gd (5), Dy (6)), regardless of the 2/LnCl3 ratio. Compounds 3–6 consist of a cationic fragment [LnL2]+, where the lanthanide atom is surrounded by two rigidly κ4-coordinated ligands, and an L− anion residing in the outer coordination sphere. Iminophosphonamine 1 shows a rare excitation wavelength-dependent two-band luminescence in the solid state. For compounds containing the deprotonated form, namely potassium salt KL and complexes of Gd and Dy, a single-band luminescence with the color changing from turquoise to orange was observed. The magnetic interaction between the total angular momentum (J) of the 4f electrons in a lanthanide ion and the orbital angular momentum (L) of a porphyrin in the photo-excited states of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinato Dy(III) complexes capped with a crown ether with one of two different symmetries, 12-crown-4 or 1-aza-12-crown-4, was investigated by temperature- and magnetic dependent magnetic circular dichroism (VT-VH MCD). The analysis was conducted on the complexes with different non-aromatic ligands to investigate how different symmetries of the non-aromatic ligands have an impact on the electronic interaction causing an anti-parallel orientation of J and L. The magnitude of the J–L interaction was determined from simulation-based fitting to experimental ratios. While in both cases an antiferromagnetic-type interaction between J and L was identified, an asymmetric non-aromatic ligand resulted in an increased magnitude of the J–L interaction.
