As the extended family help with the clearout, the team struggle to strip stubborn wallpaper off all three rooms. Time becomes a factor, and with Katherine keen to separate family treasure from the clutter of the past, the whole team join forces to renovate the house. THERE was a moment, near the start of RTÉ's The Boys In Green documentary, that I'd forgotten all about. There they were, ahead of their departure for Euro 88, all decked out in their shiny new tracksuits, singing The Boys In Green on the Late Late Show alongside their manager, Jack Charlton, while Gay Byrne conducted the audience in a grand sing-a-long. We used to do things like that back then. After qualifying for the finals of a football tournament for the first time ever, it would have been unthinkable for the team to leave the country without recording an uplifting theme song, in this case, written by Mick Carwood, who was a journalist with The Sunday Press. The whole thing was, in retrospect, bonkers. But then everything about The Boys In Green was beautifully bonkers. I was at that last pre-Charlton game, one of the miserable 8,000 as Denmark put paid to Eoin Hand's reign as Ireland manager. Back then, if it was a slow afternoon in Hot Press, a bunch of us would decide, half an hour in advance, to walk up to Lansdowne Road and pay in at the turnstiles. Funnily enough, I was with Declan Lynch - an erudite commentator in the documentary, the first part of which aired on Monday - on that day and for many of the magical ones that followed. I can still see our very first Mexican wave approach us, Lynch in mock horror at what was transpiring, then gleefully shouting, 'I got six honours in my Leaving Cert,' as he threw his arms in the air. Thirty years on, Lynch still maintains that Italia 90 was the best thing that ever happened in this country, and it's hard to argue with that. I was 21 when Ray Houghton put the ball in the English net. I was in The Hill in Ranelagh and afterwards we spilled out onto the green in front of the pub, where many fell into boozy slumbers and woke up with sunburnt noses and banging heads. But these were happiness hangovers, the first of many that took the whole country on a sort of wild ride, as we went from being the Little Country that Couldn't to the Little Country that Did. I have a million memories of the Charlton years, some hazy, someentirely related to the aforementioned happy accident of being 21-years-old. Let's just say that I kissed a lot of boys in service to my country in those years. Because that's what everyone was doing - hanging out of moving car windows, climbing up lamp posts, dancing on the streets and shifting strangers like we'd just won a world war. On the evening that we qualified for the quarter-finals of the World Cup - a phrase I will never tire of - the buses stopped running in Dublin because the drivers wanted to join the party and nobody minded at all. We hitched a lift from town back to our local pub to drink more pints, sing more songs and kiss more boys. It was simply the best of times. AND I was dead lucky, I'll admit that. Another happy accident - growing up friends with Niall Quinn - gave me better access to the team than most. Over the years, I would get to hang out with players, officials and on a couple of memorable occasions, even the smiling manager, who never seemed to know what to make of young women who liked football more than footballers. Those nights would never happen now: when I had the opportunity to mingle again with a later Irish team a few years back, it was all wrist bands, labyrinthine levels of access and strict booze bans. I once spent a night in a karaoke bar in Copenhagen with Quinner and Kevin Moran, for God's sake. It was a party that lasted for the best part of a decade. It was mad and wild and wonderful and - even if we were to win a World Cup now - never to be repeated. As commentators in The Boys In Green pointed out, we had nothing to lose back then. Nothing to lose means everything to gain, and we gained it in spades. Inevitably, there was a lot of talk about timing.
