To analyze the impact of a pharmacy student delivered presentation on prospective rural high school students' interest toward the pharmacy profession and knowledge regarding a career in pharmacy. Presentations about applying to pharmacy school, the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, and pharmacist careers were given at ten high schools across North Dakota and Minnesota by third year pharmacy students attending North Dakota State University. Each pharmacy student presenter received training to ensure that all high school students received clear and consistent information. A pre-post survey was used to understand the impact of the presentation on high school student interest and knowledge regarding a career in pharmacy. Data was analyzed using a chi-square test and McNemar's test. Five hundred and eight students consented to the study and completed the pre-post surveys. Of these students, the largest group was high school juniors (number (n) = 239, 47%), followed by sophomores (n = 161, 32%), seniors (n = 104, 20%) and freshmen (n = 3, 1%). The majority of students attended school in North Dakota (n = 469, 92%). Similarly, most students planned to attend a four-year college (n = 451, 89%) and were interested in a medical/healthcare related career (n = 310, 61%). All interest and knowledge questions showed a statistically significant increase in score pre-post. Presentations delivered by pharmacy students to prospective rural high school students improved overall interest and knowledge regarding pharmacy school and the profession. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) requires schools to provide anti-doping education to student athletes. The purpose of this project was to assess the effectiveness of student pharmacist-led education on NCAA student athletes' knowledge of banned supplements and nutritional/dietary supplements. Student athletes at one Midwest public university were provided a 20-min educational presentation on banned substances and nutritional and dietary supplements delivered by two student pharmacists. Student athletes were invited to complete a knowledge assessment at baseline and after the presentation. The assessment consisted of two demographic questions and 13 knowledge questions. Two hundred thirty-three student athletes provided matched pre- and post-intervention data for analysis. There was an increase in the mean knowledge scores (13 points maximum); 9.8 (75%) before and 11.1 (85%) after the intervention. Student athletes gained more knowledge in the topic areas of stimulant medications and identification of credible drug sources. They gained less knowledge in the topic area of anabolic steroid use. Student pharmacist-led education resulted in statistically significant increases in student athlete knowledge of banned substances and nutritional/dietary supplements. The educational presentation is adaptable and easily transferable to other universities. Ungrading is an alternative assessment approach that focuses on feedback provided to students in place of grades. Giving feedback as opposed to grades has been shown to increase intrinsic learner motivation, promote deeper learning, and decrease stress and anxiety. Four pharmacy faculty implemented ungrading practices into required pharmacy courses, including two pharmacy practice lab courses and two didactic courses. Specific strategies such as formative feedback, peer assessment, self-reflection, and small and large group discussions were incorporated to achieve the learning objectives for each course. This work provides details about the assignments and assessments used in each course. Anonymous surveys were administered to faculty members and students at a Midwest School of Pharmacy. Faculty members expressed varying levels of satisfaction and stress related to grading assessments. They also shared their opinions on teaching courses without traditional grades. The student survey examined factors such as grade point average (GPA), study time, and enjoyment of the pharmacy program. It also captured general opinions about grades. Based on survey results the implementation of ungrading practices helped students feel more prepared for advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs). The findings contribute to the understanding of alternative grading approaches and their potential impact on student learning, well-being, and motivation. Rethinking assessment of student work may be a valid option for pharmacy schools, particularly in the setting of increased focus on student wellness and the educator's goal of increasing learning for all students. The increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) among college students, particularly in pharmacy education, raises ethical concerns and prompts debates on responsible usage. The promise of the potential to reduce workload is met with concerns of accuracy issues, algorithmic bias, and the lack of AI education and training. This study aims to understand pharmacy students' perspectives on the use of AI in pharmacy education. This study used an anonymous 14-question survey distributed among second, third, and fourth-year pharmacy students at four schools of pharmacy in the United States. A total of 171 responses were analyzed. Demographic information included institution, class identification (P2, P3, P4), and age range. Regarding the use of AI, 43% of respondents were unaware of limitations of AI tools. Many respondents (45%) had used AI tools to complete assignments, while 42% considered it academic dishonesty. Fifty-six percent believed AI tools could be used ethically. Student perspectives on AI were varied but many expressed that it will be integral to pharmacy education and future practice. This study highlights the nuances of AI usage among pharmacy students. Despite limited education and training on AI, students utilized tools for various tasks. This survey provides evidence that pharmacy students are exploring the use of AI and would likely benefit from education on using AI as a supplement to critical thinking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Availability of patient care services in rural areas is often lacking, which can reduce access to care for patients living in these areas. Patient care within community pharmacies is vital to care access in rural areas, but expanding pharmacy services can often be challenging. Pharmacy students, especially those on advanced pharmacy practice experiences, are positioned to make an impact on sites. The objective of this study was to describe the implementation, evaluation, and impact of a student scholarship program designed to increase patient care initiatives in rural community pharmacies. Scholarships were provided to students to expand patient care initiatives targeting chronic disease in select rural community pharmacies. Before and after participating in the scholarship program, students completed a survey assessing their perceived ability and confidence to initiate new patient care activities. In addition, patient care services provided by students were tracked and reported cumulatively. During the first year of implementation, 24 student scholarship rotations were completed. Throughout the 24 rotations, 369 patients were screened for prediabetes, 391 were screened for hypertension, and 552 patients were screened for immunizations. Of the 27 items presented in the survey, 20 items showed a mean statistically significant change indicating an increase in student confidence in leading, developing, and performing patient care activities. A student scholarship program designed to increase patient care initiatives in rural community pharmacies led to new patient care services in rural areas and increased student confidence in leading, developing, and expanding upon patient care activities. This study determined the need to calibrate preceptors' use of levels of entrustment (LOE) in the evaluation of students performing entrustable professional activities (EPAs). Two introductory and four advanced pharmacy practice experience-focused cases were developed which described a fictional student, a practice site, and timing of a rotation. The cases included EPA-based tasks assigned to the student. Participants were to assign a LOE to the student for each EPA-based task. Sixty of 317 preceptors participated in the study. Statistically significant differences in mean assigned LOE were found between preceptors by age (P <.05); between preceptors with differences in residency training (P <.05); and between preceptors who spent differing amounts of time with experiential students daily (P <.05). Differences in assigned LOE were found based upon preceptor age, completion of a residency, and daily hours spent with experiential students. However, these differences did not result in changes to whether the student would pass or fail the rotation. Findings suggest that preceptors are consistent in assigning LOE to EPA-based tasks performed by students. In addition, preceptor development programming appears to be effective in establishing a standardized understanding of LOE among preceptors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Graduating student pharmacists who are practice-ready is an essential responsibility of pharmacy programs and heavily emphasized by Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education (ACPE), pharmacy education's accrediting body. Although several studies have examined students' readiness to engage in advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE), few studies examine graduating students' readiness to practice. The objective of this study was to examine national trends in graduating pharmacy students' and preceptors' perceptions of students' pharmacy practice preparedness across a six-year time frame (2016–2021) and trends in graduating students' overall impressions of their program and the pharmacy profession across the same time period. A longitudinal descriptive study to examine trends in graduating student and preceptor perception was conducted utilizing data from the 2016–2021 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Graduating Student Surveys (GSS) (n = 65,461) and Preceptor Surveys (PS) (n = 41,951). Over six years of survey data analyzed, a large percentage of students at both public and private institutions reported they felt prepared for practice (96.5% vs 95.5% respectively, p < 0.001). There was overall agreement (>90%) among preceptors that graduating students were prepared to enter pharmacy practice based on responses, although preceptors had lower levels of agreement compared to students on most statements. Based on the findings, both graduating pharmacy students and preceptors feel that graduates are prepared to practice pharmacy, with consistent trends in perceptions over the last six years. However, results also indicate that a consistent downward trend in students' willingness to pursue pharmacy again, indicating decreased optimism of graduating students for the profession.
