Background: Anemia in females of the reproductive age group is an area of concern globally, but its prevalence is high in developing countries. Dietary habits and lifestyle impact the hematological parameters. It is important to evaluate the impact of tea drinking on hematological parameters in females of the reproductive age group., Objective: The study aims to determine the association of tea drinking with anemia among women of reproductive age (WRA) in the Mekran division of Balochistan., Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted at Mekran Medical College (MMC), a teaching hospital in Turbat, Balochistan, by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from December 2023 to May 2024. Using a non-probability convenience sampling technique, a total of 356 females, 16-35 years of age, were included in the study after getting informed consent. Pregnant females and those who were using any medication for anemia were excluded from the study. Blood samples were analyzed using a CBC hematology analyzer. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26 by applying an independent sample t-test and chi-square test., Results: Among all 356 included participants, 193 females were anemic. Among the tea drinkers (n = 266), 159 participants were mild to severely anemic. While among non-tea-drinking women (n = 90), only 34 participants were mild or moderately anemic with no severe anemia. A significant association was found between tea drinking and anemia among WRA (p < 0.05). A significant mean difference was found in the hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) levels among the tea-drinker and non-tea-drinker participants (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The WRA group from the Mekran region is suffering from anemia. Women who drink tea suffer more from anemia. Objective: Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is an emerging method with a wide range of potential uses in gastroenterology, including the detection of bile duct stones and the identification of early ductal alterations in suspected patients. This study was designed to compare the diagnostic yield of EUS and transabdominal ultrasound (TUS) in the detection of gallbladder and common bile duct (CBD) microlithiasis., Method: Patients with biliary colic with normal initial TUS were the subjects of this prospective study. EUS scan was performed on all recruited patients and linear endoscopes were used for the EUS examination. Cholecystectomy and histological analysis were done in patients within two weeks after EUS revealing cholelithiasis whereas the cases of CBD stone/microlithiasis were confirmed by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). The mean values of all hematological characteristics were independently determined for males and females and then compared using Student's t-test. For statistical significance, a p-value of 0.05 or below was used., Results: A total of 131 patients, including 77 females and 54 males, with a mean age of 38.41 ± 14.78 years were examined. All 78 (59.5%) individuals who had cholecystectomy were found to have gallstones or microlithiasis as successfully diagnosed by EUS. The sensitivity and specificity of EUS were 92.9% and 100%, respectively, for CBD stones and 98.8% and 100%, respectively, for the detection of gallbladder microlithiasis. The agreement between EUS and TUS was fair for CBD stones (κ = 0.214) and very weak for microlithiasis (κ = -0.093)., Conclusion: EUS demonstrates a superior yield over TUS in detecting gallbladder stones and CBD microlithiasis, offering a more reliable diagnostic modality., Limitation: This was a single-center study., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright © 2024, Ul Hassan Khurshid et al.)

Arsenic is a natural element found in the earth's crust and is extensively present in various environmental components. Anthropogenic activities and a few natural events have generated contaminants that have led to massive environmental pollution, one form of which is arsenic contamination. Arsenic enters the human food chain via contaminated crops, water, seafood, and dairy products. In Pakistan, the increasing concentration of arsenic in the water is causing major health problems. Due to the serious health risks posed by arsenic, it is crucial to design and implement strategies for reducing and preventing the bioaccumulation of arsenic and its entry into the human food chain. There is a need for an institutional framework for arsenic mitigation, accountability, and systemic checks and balances. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness and safety of chlorthalidone and hydrochlorothiazide in patients with hypertension. The present meta-analysis was reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Our search for relevant articles was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHIL databases from their inception until March 31, 2023. Keywords used to search for relevant articles included "hydrochlorothiazide," "chlortalidone," "hypertension," "cardiovascular," and "blood pressure." The outcomes assessed in this meta-analysis included changes in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). Myocardial infarction, stroke, and all-cause mortality were also assessed. For safety analysis, we evaluated the risk of hypokalemia between the two groups. Any disagreement between the two authors in the data extraction process was resolved through discussion. Eight studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria included in the present meta-analysis. Our analysis showed that chlorthalidone was superior to hydrochlorothiazide in controlling both SBP and DBP, with no significant heterogeneity reported. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, all-cause mortality, and hospitalization due to heart failure. The current meta-analysis was conducted to determine the predictors of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in patients with sepsis. The present meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with the MOOSE (Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) guidelines. We conducted a systematic search using the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE databases for studies published between 1 January 2000 and 28 February 2023 that assessed the predictors of ARDS in patients with sepsis. We used key terms such as "predictors," "acute respiratory distress syndrome," and "sepsis" to search for relevant articles. Our search was limited to human studies published in English. A total of six studies were included in this meta-analysis. Of the six studies, four were retrospective and two were prospective. The pooled incidence of ARDS was 11.27%. We identified six factors with a consistent and statistically significant association with ARDS, including sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score, pulmonary sepsis, smoking, pancreatitis, and C-reactive protein. Age, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were not found to be significantly associated with ARDS in this patient population.
