This paper describes the strategies used by Aboriginal young people to build positive relationships and sexual wellbeing. It does so to counter the risk-focussed narratives present in much existing research and to showcase the resourcefulness of Aboriginal young people. We used peer-interview methods to collect qualitative data from 52 Aboriginal young people living in western Sydney, Australia. Participants reported a strong desire to stay safe and healthy in their sexual relationships and to achieve this they relied heavily on oral communication and yarning strategies. Participants viewed communication as a way to gain or give advice (about bodies, infections, pregnancy, relationships); to assess the acceptability and safety of potential partners; to negotiate consent with partners; to build positive relationships; and to get themselves out of unhealthy relationships. Participants also discussed 'self-talk' as a strategy for building sexual wellbeing, referring to narratives of self-respect and pride in culture as important in establishing Aboriginal young people's positive views of self and as deserving of respectful and safe sexual relationships. These findings suggest that future programmes and interventions based on yarning could be well-regarded, given it is a cultural form of pedagogy and a strategy Aboriginal young people already use to build positive relationships and identities. Trans and gender diverse people are globally recognised as being under-served in clinical services, with significant implications for their health. During a national reorientation of the Australian cervical screening programme – from Papanicolaou smears to human papillomavirus screening – we conducted interviews with 12 key informants in cancer policy, sexual and reproductive health and trans health advocacy to understand how trans people's needs and experiences were being accounted for and addressed in health policy and practice. Themes captured the complexities of increasing visibility for trans people, including men and non-binary people with a cervix. These complexities reflect the extensive system and cultural change required in asking policymakers and practitioners to think differently about who is at risk of a disease typically associated with cisgender women. Informants drew on the language of trauma to explain the resistance many trans people feel when engaging with clinical services, particularly relating to sexual and reproductive health. In doing so, they argued for increasing resources and processes to elicit trans people's willingness to put their trust in such services. Thinking critically about the relationship between the politics of trans visibilities, trauma and trust can support effective and inclusive approaches to transgender health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This qualitative study explored the barriers and facilitators to sexual communication between older adults and friends. Fifty-three women and men aged 58 and older were interviewed about their intimate relationships and sexual behaviours and attitudes. Findings indicated that talking about sex with friends played an important role in providing support and sharing information. The privacy of the topic meant that trust and confidentiality had to be in place before sexual conversations occurred, and that discretion was required for those married or in a relationship due to potential breaches of privacy. Stereotypes associated with older age made talking about sex 'risky' as participants were vulnerable to scrutiny. Growing-up during a time when sex was taboo influenced willingness and comfort in talking about sex today. Among those who did talk with friends, women tended to talk to women and men to men. These findings are significant in the context of an increasing global population of older adults and silence around sex and ageing. By exploring sexual communication outside of the healthcare context, where previous research has focused, the findings indicate novel ways to support the sexual health and well-being of older adults. Increased awareness of the health disparities faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) people has driven the need for LGBTIQ-inclusive medical practices internationally. However, despite bisexual, pansexual and queer women's increased sexual health risks and reduced engagement with health services, there is little qualitative research examining their healthcare experiences. In addition, healthcare practitioners continue to report lack of awareness and competence in inclusive practice, particularly regarding these groups. To address these gaps in the literature and practice, this study draws on 21 qualitative interviews with women and general practitioners, comparing and contrasting their understandings and experiences of inclusive sexual and reproductive healthcare. Findings reveal that women value practitioners who take a non-judgemental approach, use inclusive language and are knowledgeable or willing to self-educate about LGBTIQ issues. Practitioners describe prioritising visual indicators of inclusivity, using inclusive language and embracing professional development. However, women and doctors both identify knowledge gaps among healthcare providers and the need for additional training opportunities to support effective inclusive practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
