This paper calls for a critical reframing of masculinity as an intersectional construct in the HIV epidemic and in public health. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with a sample of 56 Black men who have sex with men and women in the San Francisco Bay Area. Men described their sexual identities and practices via complex narratives of masculinity that drew on subordinated and resourceful adaptations to the structural effects of racism, economic marginalisation and homophobia. By focusing on men whose experience of masculinity operates outside fixed identity categories, the paper draws attention to the intersectionality that is, by necessity, constitutive of men's lived experiences. Findings suggest the value of an integrative framework for understanding Black masculinities as processes and practices simultaneously informed by structural inequalities (racism, economic marginalisation and/or homophobia, in particular) and cultural meanings of gender. By utilising an intersectional approach, public health and sociology can better understand the concurrent resilience and vulnerability of masculinities, while building an interdisciplinary understanding of the symbolic role of Black masculinities in the USA, as well as a means by which to promote health and well-being in and through these gendered contexts. Most research investigating how men and women in heterosexual relationships negotiate contraceptive use focuses on the women's point of view. Using a sample of 44 interviews with men attending a western US university, this study examines norms governing men's participation in contraceptive use and pregnancy prevention and their responses to those norms. The paper demonstrates how competing norms around sexual health decision-making and women's bodily autonomy contribute to unintended outcomes that undermine young people's quest for egalitarian sexual relationships. While men largely agree that responsibility for sexual health decision-making should be shared with women, they also believe that women should have power over their own bodies and sexual health. However, the coexistence of these two competing norms - which call for both equal responsibility in decision-making and women's bodily autonomy - results in a disconnect between men saying that sexual health decision-making should be equal, but not always participating equally. Thus, men largely give contraceptive decision-making power over to women, putting the burden of pregnancy prevention onto women and letting men off the hook. Latinas comprise the largest racial/ethnic group of trans women (male-to-female transgender people) in New York City, where HIV seroprevalence among trans Latinas has been found to be as high as 49%. Despite this population's high risk of HIV, little is known about resilience among trans Latinas that may provide protective health factors. Six focus groups and one in-depth interview were conducted with 34 low-income trans/gender-variant people of colour who attended transgender support groups at harm reduction programmes in New York City. This paper reports on data from 13 participants who identified as immigrant trans Latinas. Focus groups were coded and analysed using thematic qualitative methods. The majority of immigrants were undocumented but reported having robust social support. Unique characteristics of immigrant trans Latinas included alternative kinship structures and sources of income. Social creativity was used to develop achievable ways in which to improve their health outcomes. Resilience was evident in informal kinship dynamics, formal support groups, gender-transition, educational access and skills training and substance use reduction. The promise of egg freezing for women's fertility preservation entered feminist debate in connection with medical and commercial control over, and emancipation from, biological reproduction restrictions. In this paper we explore how women negotiate and make sense of the decision to freeze their eggs. Our analysis draws on semi-structured interviews with 16 women from the Midwest and East Coast regions of the USA who froze their eggs. Rather than freezing to balance career choices and 'have it all', the women in this cohort were largely 'freezing for love' and in the hope of having their 'own healthy baby'. This finding extends existing feminist scholarship and challenges bioethical concerns about egg freezing by drawing on the voices of women who freeze their eggs. By viewing egg freezing as neither exclusively liberation nor oppression or financial exploitation, this study casts egg freezing as an enactment of 'responsible' reproductive citizenship that 'anticipates coupledom' and reinforces the genetic relatedness of offspring. This paper details results of a study examining administrative case data from 2010-2015 from abortion funds serving the USA and the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. Driven by the available data, the researchers compared organisational characteristics, patient characteristics, procedural costs, patient resources and the ratio between patient resources and procedural costs. Independent t-tests were conducted to assess whether differences in characteristics, costs or resources were significant. The number of patients serviced by abortion funds across the two datasets increased yearly from 2010-2015. While patients in the USA had more resources, on average, to contribute to their abortion procedure, Irish, Northern Irish and Manx patients had the resources to pay for a greater percentage of their costs, on average, which was mainly attributable to the differences in gestational age of those helped by the different abortion funds. Patients across all nations were similar in terms of their marital status, average age and number of existing children. Recent research indicates that risk perceptions are shaped by social and cultural factors, and therefore it is important to study the cultural aspects of sexual risk understandings. This paper reports on a pilot study using consensus analysis to study the content and distribution of knowledge of sexual risk among a small sample of college students at a private university in western New York. Twenty men and 20 women were surveyed. The results of the subsequent consensus analysis suggest that the men, the women, and all the respondents combined share a model of what constitutes risky sex. The women showed a greater level of consensus and average competence than men. There were important differences between men and women in some aspects of the content of knowledge. In particular, men perceived sexual desire as more likely to prevent the practice of safe sex, whereas women saw alcohol in that role. Does research on gender-based violence (GBV) pose greater than minimal risk to researchers and participants? This question needs to be understood particularly in light of hesitancy by Institutional Review Boards to approve research on GBV. The safety and risks of doing GBV studies and the implications for the ethical review process have not been a focus of much research. This qualitative study collected data through in-depth interviews with 12 experienced GBV researchers from various countries and a desk review. This paper explores researchers' interpretation of and meanings of the safety recommendations as provided in the WHO guidelines and whether there is empirical evidence on the presence of risks and safety concerns unique to GBV research. Informants raised a number of safety concerns about GBV research, yet in the interviews there were very few examples of problems having occurred, possibly because of the precautions applied. This paper argues that the notion that GBV studies carry greater than minimal risk when ethics precautions are followed is based on speculation, not evidence. Research on lesbian, gay and bisexual young people in the USA and UK has provided an important tool for advocacy and for developing appropriate public policy. Studies suggest that lesbian, gay and bisexual youth are more frequently victims of discrimination as a result of actual or perceived sexual orientation than adults, and anecdotal information suggests that transgender young people may be particularly vulnerable. During the past decade, high rates of victimization, particularly in school and community settings, has paralleled increased visibility. Increased media attention has focused on gay youth in schools, highlighting the need for support, appropriate policies and intervention. This paper reviews research and policy needs related to sexual minority youth in the USA and the UK and identifies strategies and approaches for reducing victimization and harassment and providing safer communities and school environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people. This paper analyses folk constructions of syphilis in a predominately African-American community in Houston, Texas. In-depth interviews with 17 African-Americans were conducted to describe the folk models of syphilis present. Interviews centred on prevalence transmission, risk, personal protection and detection, relationships and expectations for the future. Physical appearance, the earwax test, the match test and the smell test were used to 'detect' syphilis infection. Respondents conflated the symptoms of several STDs including syphilis, gonorrhoea, herpes and chlamydia into a single class. The study findings indicate miscommunication regarding STD information and use of different models (folk vs. medical) to explain risk of infection and prevention. The use of folk constructions in syphilis interventions would provide a better understanding of the community's knowledge and perceptions of STDs and a better focus for future education and prevention programmes. In this paper, we examine 2400 personal advertisements in the USA collected from the Internet, focusing on health concerns and looking for differences by race and sexuality. Our results show that overall, the gay men represented in this sample were more concerned with health than the heterosexual men. One notable racial difference was that gay Latinos were less concerned about health, particularly among those who were explicitly looking for sexual encounters. In the light of this finding, we suggest further investigation into the extent to which Latino machismo affects health concerns. We also find that advertisers who sought to engage in sexual activities and who were explicit about sex were more likely to mention health in their personals. This paper explores the obstacles and opportunities experienced by a diverse group of persons living with HIV and AIDS in accessing medical and social services. A social networks approach is used to analyse data from 56 in-depth interviews conducted with persons living with HIV and AIDS in Orange County, California. From this analysis, the service pathways by White/Caucasian gay men, Latina/Hispanic women who speak only Spanish, and injecting drug users of diverse ethnicities are used to illustrate the influence of race/ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation on service access. This paper analyses community members' descriptions of subgroups of gay and bisexual men in San Francisco. Five group categories are identified and subjected to detailed analysis. These are labelled leather, men of colour, activists, men who go to clubs and younger. While some of these groups meet established criteria of 'community', they do so in different ways suggesting the existence of relatively discrete sub-communities within the San Francisco gay community. While the gay community is often conceived of as monolithic it may in fact be culturally heterogenous. An alternate multi-constitutive model of community is proposed to account for this cultural heterogeneity. We also discuss how some sub-communities develop around culturally charged areas of difference, and consider the possible implications of these differences for future community interventions. This study examines the acceptability of the Reality[sup TM] female condom among a population of women in the US exhibiting a high prevalence of risk factors for infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The female condom was introduced to incarcerated women via a 20 hour didactic health and HIV education course. The 246 course graduates were interviewed before they started the course (baseline), and at 2, 6, 12 and 16 months post-release. This paper reports on the baseline and two month follow-up data to focus on the women's initial experiences with the female condom. None of the respondents reported ever using a female condom at baseline, but 62% had used one within two months of release from incarceration. Virtually all used it during vaginal sex, with 68% trying it with their husband/boyfriend and 36% trying it with a friend. Overall, 23% report using a female condom and 27% report using a male condom every time they had vaginal sex, so fully half of the respondents reported always using a condom at the 2 month follow-up interview. These data show the women increased their condom use, both male and female, between baseline and the 2 month follow-up. In this paper, we analyse the focus group discussions of approximately 300 Latino gaymen, when asked to explain the high rates of unprotected anal intercourse in their communities. Men's responses and discussions were mapped into three different categories, representing different ideologies of sexual risk: (1) ideologies about situations, circumstances and male characteristics that converge in a loss of sexual control; (2) ideologies about a basic incompatibility between safer sex and interpersonal trust, intimacy and love; and (3) fatalistic ideologies about the inevitability of HIV infection, where the fatalism evokes responses ranging from resignation to rebellion. The ideologies presented here should not be interpreted simplistically as 'causes' for unprotected sex; rather, they are windows offering views of socially-shared meaning that can help us understand the subjective experience of those who struggle with safer sex in the Latino gay community. Long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy has been shown to be non-inferior to daily oral antiretroviral therapy in clinical trials and may soon become part of clinical care. While most trial participants to date have been men, approximately one quarter of ongoing Phase 3 trial participants are women offering an important opportunity to understand how long-acting antiretroviral therapy is perceived and experienced by women. We conducted in-depth interviews with 80 people living with HIV participating in Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials of long-acting antiretroviral therapy in the USA and Spain. Fifteen percent (12/80) of trial participants interviewed were women. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and coded using content analysis, focused on gender-specific themes. Women shared many of the positive perceptions expressed by men but also had unique perspectives, including finding that long-acting antiretroviral therapy addressed the challenge of remembering pills amidst busy day-to-day realities including multiple roles and responsibilities, is less time consuming and creates less stress compared to oral antiretroviral therapy, and is emotionally freeing and empowering. The gendered nature of women's lives shaped why and how they were satisfied with long-acting antiretroviral therapy. HIV-related 'conspiracy beliefs' include ideas about the genocidal origin of HIV and the nature and purpose of HIV-related medications. These ideas have been widely documented as affecting myriad health behaviours and outcomes, including birth control use and HIV testing. Most HIV-related research has quantitatively explored this phenomenon, and further qualitative research is necessary to better understand the complexity of these beliefs as articulated by those who endorse them. Moreover, public health in general has over-emphasised the role of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study in explaining mistrust, rather than focus on ongoing social inequalities. Twenty-seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with low-income Black and Latinx people living with HIV who were currently, or had been recently, disengaged from HIV medical care. Beliefs about the role and intentions of the government and pharmaceutical industry in the epidemic highlighted the racism and classism experienced by participants. Notably, however, HIV care providers were not perceived as part of the government-pharmaceutical collusion. Interventions should focus on fostering positive beliefs about HIV medication and building trust between HIV care providers and populations that have experienced ongoing social and economic exclusion. Replacing the phrase 'conspiracy beliefs' with more descriptive terms, such as HIV-related beliefs, could avoid discrediting people's lived experiences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Critics of non-therapeutic male and female childhood genital cutting claim that such cutting is harmful. It is therefore puzzling that 'circumcised' women and men do not typically regard themselves as having been harmed by the cutting, notwithstanding the loss of sensitive, prima facie valuable tissue. For female genital cutting (FGC), a commonly proposed solution to this puzzle is that women who had part(s) of their vulvae removed before sexual debut 'do not know what they are missing' and may 'justify' their genitally-altered state by adopting false beliefs about the benefits of FGC, while simultaneously stigmatising unmodified genitalia as unattractive or unclean. Might a similar phenomenon apply to neonatally circumcised men? In this survey of 999 US American men, greater endorsement of false beliefs concerning circumcision and penile anatomy predicted greater satisfaction with being circumcised, while among genitally intact men, the opposite trend occurred: greater endorsement of false beliefs predicted less satisfaction with being genitally intact. These findings provide tentative support for the hypothesis that the lack-of-harm reported by many circumcised men, like the lack-of-harm reported by their female counterparts in societies that practice FGC, may be related to holding inaccurate beliefs concerning unaltered genitalia and the consequences of childhood genital modification. Minnesota is home to the largest population of Somalis in the USA - most arriving as refugees from the civil war in Somalia. As Somali Americans adjust to life in the USA, they are likely to undergo shifts in their belief systems - including changes in their attitudes toward gays and lesbians. We examined the attitudes of 29 Somali American women in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area toward homosexuality via face-to-face, semi-structured interviews. Transcripts were translated, transcribed and analysed using an approach informed by grounded theory. Three major themes were identified: (1) Islamic prohibitions against homosexuality; (2) homosexuals exiled to a hidden community; and (3) community members exploring tolerance. Participants' attitudes toward homosexuality were heavily influenced by religious doctrines and cultural contexts. This is the first known study in the USA of Somali American attitudes toward gays and lesbians. As people mass migrate from nations with negative attitudes toward homosexuality to countries with more progressive attitudes toward varied sexual orientations, refugee attitudes about homosexuality will undergo change. Through research and education, we can better understand how to increase tolerance toward and opportunities for visibility among gay and lesbian refugees throughout the diaspora.
