Girls' education has for many decades been central to the global development agenda, due to its positive impact on girls' health and wellbeing. In this paper, the authors revisit boys' attitudes, behaviours and norms related to girls' education, following the Samata intervention to prevent girls' school dropouts in Northern-Karnataka, South India. Data were collected from 20 boys in intervention villages before and after the intervention, and analysis was undertaken using a thematic-framework approach. Findings suggest that while boys did hold some attitudes and beliefs that supported girls' education and delayed-marriage, these remained within the framework of gender-inequitable norms concerning girls' marriageability, respectability/family-honour. Participants criticised peers who sought to jeopardise girls' respectability by teasing and community gossip about girls-boys' communication in public. Boys who rejected prevailing norms of masculinity were subjected to gossip, ridicule and violence by the community. Boys' attitudes and beliefs supported girls' education but were conditional on the maintenance of gendered hierarchies at household and interpersonal levels. Social norms concerning girls' honour, respectability and the role of boys as protectors/aggressors appeared to influence boys' response to girls' school dropouts. Future interventions aiming to address girls' education and marriage must invest time and resources to ensure that intervention components targeting boys are relevant, appropriate and effective. Sex work can offer a quick way of making money and is the only profession in which women may earn more in fewer hours when compared to other available jobs. However, most studies with sex workers in India are based on socially biased assumptions about sex work; that is, women are either coerced or trafficked into sex work. Limited attention has been paid to the voices of non-brothel-based sex workers in India. Drawing data from a larger ethnographic study conducted between December 2009 and July 2010, this paper analyses how women sex workers operating from non-brothel-based sex work settings in Kolkata, India, foresee their future. Unlike the popular 'victim imagery' of women sex workers in the Global South, this study found that women are not passive recipients of the trade; instead, they employ agency - sometimes transgressing the normative boundaries and at times reinscribing these boundaries to secure a future for themselves and their families. Therefore, to promote HIV preventive behaviour programmes reaching out to sex workers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) must proactively inquire about women's future plans and assist them in materialising their future goals, which are mostly concerned with their children's future, a life free of stigma/shame, and financial security in old age. Gender norms serve to normalise gender inequalities and constrain girls' agency. This paper examines how girls' agency, along a continuum, is influenced by the interplay between constraining and enabling influences in the girls' environments. We analyse data from a qualitative study nested within a cluster randomised evaluation of Samata, a multi-layered programme supporting adolescent girls to stay in school and delay marriage in Karnataka, South India. Specifically, we compare agency among 22 girls from intervention communities and 9 girls in control communities using data from the final round of interviews in a qualitative cohort. Using the concept of 'thin' and 'thick' agency on a continuum, we identified shocks like mothers' death or illness, poverty stress, gender norms and poor school performance as thinning influences. Good school examination results; norms in support of education; established educational aspirations; supportive parents, siblings and teachers; and strategic government and Samata resources enabled thicker agency. The intervention programme's effect increased in parallel to the gradient from thin to thicker agency among girls in progressively supportive family contexts. Engagement with the programme was however selective; families adhering to harmful gender norms were not receptive to outreach. In India, relatively little is known about sex worker mothers' beliefs regarding sexual health communication with their children. Using qualitative data collected in Kolkata, India, this study used the Parent Expansion of the Theory of Planned Behaviour to examine sex worker mothers' beliefs about sexual health communication and factors shaping these beliefs. Sex worker mothers' beliefs about sexual health communication were shaped by societal norms and collectivising processes often driven by Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC), a sex workers' collective in Kolkata, India. Specifically, we found that challenging stigma, assuming ownership over one's body and health, and making relevant material resources and knowledge accessible and meaningful were key in supporting mothers to overcome barriers around sexual health communication. These collectivising processes shaped mothers' beliefs about sexual health communication and facilitated their ability to engage in it. Future research, policies and programmes should consider the far-reaching impact of community-led structural interventions on sex worker mothers and their children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using a model of transactional resilience, this study examined the development of resilience in relation to stressors experienced by sexual minority women throughout the life course. Twenty-five urban women were interviewed about their experiences related to gender and sexuality in Indian society. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Findings showed that women experienced implicit and explicit forms of sexism and heterosexism, making it difficult to survive in a patriarchal and heteronormative society. Several resilience factors were identified reflected in women's efforts to deal with stressors to maintain and create support. Positive characteristics and smart strategies helped participants survive stressful events and maintain healthy relations with others. They also helped them by creating a safe and positive social environment. Findings point to the need to better understand the resilience process among similar populations of women in societies like India, where patriarchy and unequal opportunities affect wellbeing and quality of life. Global health policy-makers have called for demonstration projects to better understand pre-exposure prophylaxis' (PrEP) effectiveness across geographies and populations. Ashodaya, a sex worker collective, initiated a PrEP project in Mysore, India. We conducted a project ethnography to explore the role that community participation played within the project. Although the project proved immensely successful in terms of retention and adherence, to explain these findings we point towards Ashodaya's history of collectivisation around sexual health—a history of community action that has given rise to new spaces of belonging and accumulated knowledges that became instrumental in the formulation of strategies to confront anticipated challenges during the project. These strategies included: (1) the participation of community leaders as the first participants to take PrEP, followed by the sharing of their experiences through testimonials to their peers; (2) the endorsement of PrEP among community leaders living with HIV, to avoid social divisions around HIV status; and (3) ongoing community-level support from outreach workers that went beyond administering PrEP to address the various needs of the community. These community-led approaches demonstrate that communities hold key insights into the delivery of clinically-oriented interventions, suggesting the vital role they continue to play in planning and implementing new prevention technologies. This study used the minority stress model to explore experiences of gender transitioning among hijra (trans woman) individuals in Mumbai, India. It used a qualitative life history calendar approach to examine transitioning as a critical life experience in a chronological manner. Twenty hijra-identified persons were recruited using purposive snowball sampling and interviewed at a community-based organisation. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Participants reported diverse experiences living as hijra and shared perspectives on transitioning. Most participants identified to undergo transitioning at their own will. Many cited biological families as a factor that restricted or delayed transitioning, while gharana (congregation of hijras) and gurus were listed as sources of support. Participants also differed in the reasons given for transitioning, expectations, types of practices, and issues of access and support. Transitioning was described as an integral part of their experiences as hijra and developing a congruent self. Implications of the study include the need to engage communities in determining their needs and social support, provide holistic transitioning services at public hospitals, and develop technical and cultural sensitivity training for health professionals.
