Four novel coordination polymers, {Na2[Co3(H2TTHA)2(H2O)12](H2O)2}·4(H2O) (1), {Na[Cu4(H2TTHA)(HTTHA)(H2O)8](H2O)3}·5(H2O) (2), [Cd3(TTHA)(H2O)4] (3) and [Ca5(HTTHA)2(H2O)8] (4), (H6TTHA = 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine hexaacetic acid) have been synthesized by self-assembly of the flexible hexapodal acid H6TTHA and corresponding metal salts. The four complexes exhibit novel frameworks with different topologies due to diverse coordination modes and different conformations of the flexible H6TTHA. Complex 1shows a 3D network with (4,4,6)-connected topology constructed from parallel one-dimensional hybrid ribbons with nearly planar 24-membered rings, in which all Co(ii) atoms are located in one plane. Complex 2features a 3D (3,4,4,4,7)-connected network bridged by sodium ions from 2D layer structures which are formed through the interconnection of the tetranucleate units and the flexible ligands. Complex 3possesses hybrid layers constructed from zigzag Cd–O chains. These layers are further linked by the TTHA6−ligands with two configurations, leading to another 3D (3,3,8)-connected framework. The metal ions in complex 4are connected into wall-like infinite metal chains which are bridged by the carboxylate groups of ligands into a 3D (3,3)-connected hybrid framework. The framework is further furnished with the ligands forming hydrophobic channels with approximate sizes 3.5 Å × 9 Å based on the distances of the opposite atoms. The enantiometric pairs of ligands are formed in spite of no asymmetric carbon atom in complexes 1–3. Variable temperature magnetic studies down to 2 K reveal antiferromagnetic interactions in complexes 1and 2. Complexes 3and 4are both highly emissive at room temperature. This paper investigates the synthesis, crystal structure, thermal properties, and energetic performance of two 1D coordination polymers (CPs). The CPs, namely, [Zn(atrz)(DNBA)2(H2O)2]n (1) and [Cd(atrz)(DNBA)2(H2O)2]n (2), were designed and synthesized based on the nitrogen-rich ligand 4,4′-azobis-1,2,4-triazole (atrz) and 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid (HDNBA) via a mixed ligand strategy using a simple and environment-friendly method. The CPs were characterized by various spectroscopic and analytical techniques along with single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). SCXRD analysis reveals a distorted octahedral geometry around the metal ions (Zn/Cd), leading to the formation of a 1D coordination polymer while constructing a 2D structural framework through intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Both the CPs exhibit similar thermal stability but considerably differ in their heat of formation values (1 = −894.43, 2 = 1635.93 kJ mol−1). CP 2 has higher detonation velocity (7.24 km s−1) and pressure (23.67 GPa) compared to 1 (detonation velocity: 6.28 km s−1, detonation pressure: 17.57 GPa) owing to its higher heat of formation and density. Both the CPs exhibit ideal insensitivity to friction and impact stimuli, ensuring their safety during transportation and processing. The value of average activation energy obtained from isoconversion ASTM E698 for 1 and 2 was reported to be 143.8 and 168.0 kJ mol−1, respectively. This study explores the development of energetic CPs through the mixed ligand strategy based on the atrz ligand and incorporating HDNBA as the co-ligand to reduce the sensitivity while maintaining the comparable energetic performance of previously reported atrz-based complexes. In this paper, a series of coordination polymers, {[Zn(adb)(L1)2]·solvent}n (L1 = solvent = N,N-dimethylacetamide, Hui-3-DMA; L1 = N,N-dimethylformamide and no solvent, Hui-3-DMF; L1 = N,N-diethylformamide and no solvent, Hui-3-DEF) have been synthesized by hydrothermal reactions of Zn(NO3)3·6H2O and 4,4′-(anthracene-9,10-diyl)dibenzoic acid (H2adb). These compounds show similar one-dimensional (1D) zig-zag chain structures, which are limited by the end-coordination of the solvent molecules. Interestingly, these compounds all show blue-emission properties, which could be easily modulated by using different solvents. Among them, Hui-3-DMA presents an excellent quantum yield performance, as high as to 54.1%, which is very promising for blue-emission materials. Moreover, various-temperature fluorescence studies reveal good linear or exponential decline trends for their emission intensity as temperature increases, demonstrating the potential of these compounds as fluorescent thermometers. Optically-active luminescent materials based on lanthanoid ions attract significant attention due to their unique spectroscopic properties and the possibility of application as chemical sensors. Five isostructural lanthanoid metal organic frameworks, namely {[Pr(3,4-PDA)(Glu)0.5(H2O)2]CH3CN}(1) and [Ln(3,4-PDA)(Glu)0.5(H2O)2]: Ln = Nd (2), Sm (3), Eu (4), and Tb (5) (where 3,4-PDA = pyridine-3,4-dicarboxylic acid, Glu = glutaric acid), synthesized via the solvothermal method are reported. These lanthanoid metal–organic frameworks were characterized by FTIR, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, BET, Hirshfeld surface analysis, DFT calculations, electronic spectroscopy, and photoluminescence techniques. MOFs 1–5 show porous two-dimensional (2D) structures. The luminescence properties of MOFs 4 and 5 demonstrated the range of sensing capabilities for some toxic heavy metals. However, MOFs 4 and 5 are highly sensitive for the detection of Pb2+, exhibiting the most effective luminescence quenching with the lowest detectable change in the signal occurring at ∼0.014 and ∼0.013 ppm of Pb2+ with MOFs 4 and 5, respectively, at room temperature in minutes. The MOF-based luminescence sensors designed in this paper demonstrate a successful and feasible strategy to use pyridine-3,4-dicarboxylic acid-based ligand as an antenna, which can efficiently sensitize Eu3+ and Tb3+ emission. A systematic investigation of the system manganese(II) salt–H2SBA–auxiliary ligand–solvent successfully led to the isolation of six new multidimensional coordination polymers: [Mn5(2-pic)2(DMA)4(SBA)4]·4DMA (1), [Mn3(pyzc)2(DMF)(H2O)(SBA)2]·DMF·H2O (2), [Mn5(pyzc)2(DMA)4(SBA)4]·4DMA (3), [Mn5(mpyzc)2(DMA)4(SBA)4]·4DMA (4), [Mn2(phen)2(H2O)(SBA)2]·2DMA (5) and [Mn3(phen)2(SBA)3]·5DMF (6), where SBA = 4,4′-sulfonyldibenzoate 2-pic = 2-picolinate, pyzc = 2-pyrazinecarboxylate acid, mpyzc = 5-methyl-2-pyrazinecarboxylate and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline. The selected use of N-containing ligands to block the coordination sites of manganese enabled us to understand their influence in controlling the nuclearity and the dimensionality of the extended manganese carboxylate coordination networks. Single crystal X-ray crystallography established that the structures of all the solids were built of homometallic clusters varying from monomeric to pentameric manganese(II) carboxylate units. While the solids 1, 3 and 4 are isostructural, possessing a 2D coordination network containing pentanuclear SBUs of the composition {Mn5N2O3}, the 2D solids 2 and 5 are respectively built from binuclear {Mn2N4O7} and trinuclear {Mn3N2O14} SBUs. The solid 6 is the lone example of a 3D coordination network in this system. Dielectric measurements showed comparable dielectric behavior for the isostructural solids 1, 3 and 4 with ε′ ∼ 17 at room temperature. Relatively lower values observed for 2 and 5 (ε′ ∼ 14) were due to a combined effect of strong manganese carboxylate interaction and the presence of ordered polar guest molecules. Significantly higher values for 6 (∼21) could be attributed to disordered guest molecules. All the six solids exhibited antiferromagnetic behavior at lower temperatures. This paper also discusses the growth of the solids in terms of supramolecular aggregation of manganese carboxylate complex species with or without an auxiliary ligand, proposing a mechanistic pathway to trace the chemical events from molecules to the final solid. In this paper, we showed an example of acid-directed hydrothermal synthesis of three Cd-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) under similar conditions, namely, [Cd(TIDB)(AA)0.5(NO3)]n (1), [Cd3(TIDB)2(AA)2(H2O)2(HCOO)2]n (2), and {[Cd4(TIDB)(AA)4(H2O)5](C2H5OH)2(H2O)2}n (3) (TIDB = 1,3,5-tri(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene, H2AA = anthracene-9,10-dicarboxylic acid). Compound 1 was synthesized by the introduction of HNO3 as a structure-directing agent. It has 2D coordination networks with the 3,4-c bey topology. The porous 3D supramolecular framework in compound 1 is stabilized by H-bonds. Compound 2 was formed with the use of a HCOOH agent. It has a 3D coordination network with a new 3,4,5-c underlying net topology, and it is also porous. Compound 3 was obtained using a CH3COOH agent. It has a disordered non-porous 3D coordination network. Because 3 was hard to purify, 1 and 2 were chosen for further property investigation. On the one hand, fluorescence studies showed that 1 and 2 are both blue-emitting MOFs with quantum yields of 2.3% and 0.8%, respectively. On the other hand, CO2 cycloaddition performance was also tested, which revealed that 2 has a superior catalytic conversion of epoxybutane at 60 °C and 1 atm with a high yield of up to 95.6%. Five coordination polymers constructed from Co(II) salts, N,N'-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)oxalamide (L) and 4,4'-methylenedibenzoic acid (H2MBA), {[Co(L)(MBA)(H2O)]·H2O}n, 1, {[Co(L)(MBA)]·4H2O}n, 2, {[Co(L) (MBA)]·0.25H2O}n, 3, [Co(L)(MBA)(H2O)2]n, 4, and {[Co(L)0.5(MBA)(H2O)2]·CH3OH}n, 5, are reported, which have been structurally characterized by using single crystal X-ray crystallography. Complexes 1 and 4 have the same formula, but differ in the number of coordinated and cocrystallized water molecules, whereas 2 and 3 form a pair of supramolecular isomers with different numbers of cocrystallized water molecules. Complexes 1 and 4 show interdigitated 2D layers with a (64·8·10)(6)-2,4L3 topology, which differ in the ligand conformations of L and bonding modes of MBA2-. Complex 2 shows 2-fold interpenetrated 2D layers with a (64·8·10)(6)-2,4L3 topology and 3 displays a 2-fold interpenetrated 3D framework with a (4·6²) (4·66·8³)-fet topology, whereas 5 is a 1D ladder with a (6²·10)(6)-2,3C1 topology, indicating that the coordination and/or cocrystallization of solvent molecules are important in determining their structural diversity. Here, we present a series of Zn(II) and Co(II) coordination polymers containing two types of ligands: sterically rigid terephthalate derivatives (bdc-NO22- and bdc-Br2-) and flexible bis(2-methylimidazolyl) propane (bmip). The combination of two types of ligands allowed us to obtain and characterize both single and mixed-metal compounds by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, and elemental analysis. These 4-fold interpenetrated frameworks have a diamond topology and do not reveal any structural transformations despite the presence of a flexible ligand. Luminescence spectra for all the Zn-containing compounds were recorded. All the compounds exhibit a strong dependence of emission maxima on excitation wavelength, which is characteristic of the bmip ligand and is enhanced in coordination polymers. Compound [Zn(bdc-Br)(bmip)] demonstrates bright luminescence with a high quantum yield of 39%. Mixed-metal Zn(II)/Co(II) compounds have redshifted luminescence in comparison to [Zn(bdc-NO2)(bmip)] and compound [Zn0.6Co0.4(bdc-NO2)(bmip)] is characterized by near white emission under 460 nm excitation. Based on crystal engineering, three Zn/Cd-based metal--organic frameworks (MOFs) (FUM-153(Zn--H), FUM-167(Cd--H), and FUM-176(Cd--NH2)) were successfully prepared from rigid O-donor/flexible N-donor linkers (H2bdc (terephthalic acid) (L(O) H) or NH2-H2bdc (2-aminoterephthalic acid) (L(O) NH2) and bpfb (N,N'- 1,4-(phenylene) diisonicotinamide) (L(N))) with Zn/Cd ions. Structurally, the major difference among the FUMs is the various behaviors of the DMF solvent in the lattice or the coordination environment of the structures. This study investigated the effect of hydrogen bonding of NH2 substitution in 2-D layer linkers and its effect on the layer architecture. The results showed that hydrogen bonding indirectly affects the coordination of DMF solvent to the metal center and the porosity. To investigate the effect of the NH2 substitution in the presence or absence of the DMF solvent in the FUMs, the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) was surveyed for similar structures with the L(O) H and L(O) NH2 linkers. Remarkably, the obtained data suggested that the existence of NH2 substitution may reduce the probability of the coordination of DMF to the metal centers. Theoretical studies were carried out to explore the gas adsorption performance of the title FUMs. A better CH4 adsorption compared to CO2 for all FUMs was observed. It is worth noting that CH4 and CO2 gas adsorption in FUM-176(Cd--NH2) is higher than that in FUM-153(Zn--H) and FUM-167(Cd--H). It can be deduced that the NH2 substitution in 2-D layer linkers prevented the entering of DMF molecules into the framework (lattice or coordinated solvent). Consequently, more accessible pores are provided for gas molecules. The work demonstrates the role of linker functionality in the crystal structure, pore size, and gas adsorption properties. A facile and in situ successive linker replacement through single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC--SC) transformation process in cadmium coordination networks (CNs) based on 3,6-bis(pyridin-3-yl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (3,3'-pytz) and 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bipy) in chloroform/methanol solution is reported. In this work, we synthesized a 2D square-grid homo-linker (4,4'-bipy) coordination network of {[Cd(4,4'-bipy)2(ClO4)2] (CHCl3)4}n (1) after 24 h at room temperature. Compound 1 undergoes facile and in situ SC--SC transformation at room temperature to a 2D rectangular-grid mixed-linker (4,4'-bipy and 3,3'-pytz) coordination network of {[Cd(4,4'-bipy)(3,3'-pytz)(ClO4)2](CHCl3)(MeOH)}n (2) after two weeks through a core@shell crystal. Further, by keeping compound 2 in the mother liquor, the second SC--SC structural transformation to the 2D rhombic-grid homo-linker (3,3'-pytz) of {[Cd(3,3'-pytz)2(H2O)1.4(MeOH)0.6](3,3'-pytz)(MeOH)1.4(ClO4)2}n (3) occurs within two months. In these stepwise SC--SC transformations, we report for the first time the facile and in situ fabrication of 2D coordination networks by the replacement of linkers via the core--shell pathway. Unlike compound 3, which was stable in air, single crystals of 1 and 2 were unstable outside the mother solution, and due to the absorption of water from air, they were transformed into microcrystalline materials of {[Cd(4,4'-bipy)(H2O)2(ClO4)2](4,4'-bipy)}n (1T) and {[Cd(3,3'-pytz)(H2-O)2(ClO4)2](4,4'-bipy)}n=1 or ∞ (2T), respectively. A new type of extended viologen, N,N′-2,5-bis(3-pyridinium)thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole dipropionate, (m-H2TTzPA)(HSO3)2 (1), was synthesized, and two new coordination polymers, {[Cd(m-TTzPA)Br2]·H2O}n (2) and {[Zn(m-TTzPA)Br2]·H2O}n (3), were prepared based on the m-TTzPA ligand. Compounds 1–3 exhibit photochromic behaviors, which were proved using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy and EPR characterizations. Furthermore, all the compounds have obvious fluorescence quenching behaviors upon irradiation using a xenon lamp, where compound 1 exhibits a significant quenching efficiency of 95.84%. A caged metal–organic framework based on heptanuclear and binuclear copper clusters, namely [Cu9(L)10(H2O)2][Me2NH2+]2 (Cu-MOF) (L = rigid 6-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-2-naphthoic acid) was synthesized and structurally characterized by a solvothermal method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that Cu-MOF displays a three-dimensional porous anionic framework and exhibits a cage-cavity structure. The tri-functional ligand uses two coordination modes to bridge different SBUs to form a dodecahedral cage. Since Cu-MOF possesses both anionic and porous frameworks, it could be used for efficient and selective absorption of cationic organic dyes. Further studies truly showed that both the charge and size of the dye molecules affect the absorption of Cu-MOF. Besides, thanks to the electronic configuration and wide range of visible light absorption properties of the heptanuclear copper clusters, Cu-MOF could be used as a photocatalyst for energy transfer from oxygen molecules to singlet oxygen, and successfully oxidized benzyl alcohol to benzoic acid in air under additive-free mild conditions. Therefore, rationally prepared Cu-MOFs, guided by crystal engineering, demonstrate potential for application as organic dye adsorption separators and photocatalysts, and the feasibility of preparing functionally tailored frameworks using tri-functional ligands consisting of tetrazolium and carboxylate acid is presented. Effective adsorption of dye pollutants is essential to preserving human health and life before they are released into the environment. Ionic coordination polymers are considered good candidates for the effective elimination of dye pollutants. In this research, an anionic coordination polymer, {[NH2(CH3)2]2[Cd(μ4-L)]·1.5H2O·0.75DMF}n (1), [L4−: (E)-5,5′-(fumaroylbis(azanediyl))diisophthalate], was prepared and characterized. Structural analysis revealed that each Cd(II) ion was linked to four L4− ligands forming a 3D framework. A 2-fold interpenetrated 3D architecture of the compound was observed with a dia topology due to the large pore of a single framework. Owing to its water stability and anionic skeleton, the removal ability of four dyes with different charges and sizes by the compound was investigated. The compound, maintaining the negative charge density, effectively adsorbed the cationic methylene blue (MB) dye, while the elimination of anionic methyl orange (MO) and Congo red (CR) dyes was not observed owing to electrostatic repulsion. Additionally, the compound displayed size-dependent adsorption as evidenced by its non-adsorption of the cationic rhodamine B (RhB) dye. The compound exhibited a high MB adsorption capacity with a maximum of 689.93 mg g−1. The experimental data agreed well with the Langmuir isotherm model, and the adsorption process could be marked as a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Amphiphilic {[Cd3(L)2(phen)2(H2O)6]·2H2O·2DMF}n (1) (H3L = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid and phen = phenanthroline) and hydrophilic [Zn3(L)2(H2O)12]n (2) were obtained via hydrothermal reactions. Compound 1 is less hydrophilic due to its hydrophobic phen ligands. Hydrogen bonds extend along one direction in compound 1 and two directions in compound 2; thus, the hydrogen bond continuity of compound 1 is less than that of compound 2. The proton conduction behaviors of the two compounds as fillers of Nafion composite membranes were studied. The results show that the optimal doping amounts of 1 and 2 are 5% and 3%, respectively, and the proton conductivities of 1/Nafion-5 and 2/Nafion-3 composite membranes are about 29% and 60% higher than the proton conductivity of the pure Nafion membrane, respectively. The relationships between the structures and properties have been explored; the inherent hydrogen bonding chains or networks in the crystal structures as well as the additional continuous hydrogen bonds formed between the hydrophilic groups on the surface of their particles and the –SO3H groups of Nafion can provide more proton transfer pathways. The higher doping amount of compound 1 was attributed to its hydrophobic phen ligand, which can promote its compatibility and interactions with the Nafion membrane and reduce aggregation. The new homochiral 1D metal–organic coordination polymer {Cu[bdc-(N-MePro)H2O]·0.25H2O}n was synthesized using 2-[(1-methyl- L -prolyl)amino]terephthalic acid, which was obtained for the first time. The unique crystal structure of the new compound was determined using powder X-ray diffraction. Two new cyano-bridged coordination polymers, {[Ni(bpe)(H2O)2][Ni(CN)4]·2H2O}n (1) and {[Cu(bpe)(H2O)2][Ni(CN)4]·ethanol}n (2) (bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) were synthesized and characterized. This was part of a study attempting to rationalize the formation of Hofmann coordination polymers over their aqua-derivatives, in which we found that the length of the ligand does not control the outcome of the synthesis. In the initial phase of thermogravimetric analysis, compound 1 lost the guest water molecule while compound 2 lost its guest ethanol. Single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that both compounds crystallize in P1¯ with similar unit cell parameters. In both compounds, the Ni(II) ion is coordinated with four cyanide–carbon atoms in a square planar geometry and Cu(II) or the second Ni(II) ion adopts a distorted octahedral coordination by two bpe ligands, two bridging cyano groups, and two water molecules. In both structures, chains composed of adjacent [Ni(C12H12N2)(H2O)2]2+ (for 1) or [Cu(C12H12N2)(H2O)2]2+ (for 2) are further linked together via [Ni(CN)4]2− units and extend to generate a two-dimensional framework. The presence of disordered terminal cyanide moieties in 1 could be attributed to a larger volume available to this moiety in the structure of 1. The BET surface areas of the activated phases 1′ of 1 and 2′ of 2 are 28 m2 g−1 and 5 m2 g−1, respectively, and originally, they have no pores to accommodate gas molecules at low pressure (1 atm). 1′ does not adsorb carbon dioxide at 195 K (0.30 mmol g−1), 273 K (0.086 mmol g−1) and 298 K (0.056 mmol g−1), or hydrogen at 77 K, but it shows an affinity to adsorb nitrogen (around 2.5 mmol g−1) at 77 K and water vapor molecules (around 0.95 mmol g−1) at 298 K with typical type-II isotherms. 2′ adsorbs a small quantity of water vapor (around 0.20 mmol g−1) at 298 K and does not adsorb carbon dioxide at 195 K (0.125 mmol g−1), 273 K (0.069 mmol g−1) and 298 K (0.062 mmol g−1), or hydrogen at 77 K, but shows more affinity to adsorb nitrogen (around 1.2 mmol g−1) at 77 K. The detection of excess toxic anions or cations in an aqueous solution through various fluorescent materials such as organic or inorganic fluorescent materials has aroused significant interest recently. Herein, a new tetraimidazole ligand 1,3-bis(1-imidazolyl)-5-[3,5-bis(1-imidazolyl)-phenoxymethyl]-benzene (timpb) and its two Cd(II) metal–organic frameworks {[Cd2(1,4-bdc)2(timpb)]·5.5(H2O)}n (1) (1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid = 1,4-H2bdc) and {[Cd2(4,4′-bpdb)2(timpb)]·(MeCN)·2.5(H2O)}n (2) (4,4′-biphenyldicarboxylic acid = 4,4′-H2bpdb) were synthesized. Through X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis, 1 can be considered as a 2-fold interpenetrating pillared-bilayer framework formed by linking [Cd2(1,4-bdc)4]n layers with pairs of timpb ligands, whereas 2 exhibits a 2-fold interpenetrating 3D honeycombed framework formed by linking [Cd(4,4′-bpdb)]n chains with timpb ligands. The solid-state luminescent properties of timpb, 1 and 2 at ambient temperature were also investigated. Moreover, timpb acted as a potential luminescent sensor for the detection of cations Fe3+ or Cu2+ and the anion Cr2O72−, whereas 1 displayed high sensitivity toward the cation Fe3+ and anion Cr2O72−. Three new nonporous mercury(II) coordination polymers (CPs) containing the ditopic 1,1′-(1,4-phenylene)bis(3-(pyridin-4-yl)urea) ligand (4,4-pbubp), namely, {[Hg(4,4-pbubp)Cl2](DMSO)3}n (CP1), {[Hg(4,4-pbubp)Br2](DMSO)3}n (CP2) and {[Hg(4,4-pbubp)I2](DMSO)4}n (CP3) were synthesized and characterized structurally through infrared analysis, elemental analysis (CHNS), TGA, PXRD and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All of these compounds formed 1D polymeric zigzag chains self-assembled in the crystal into higher-dimensional structures through various hydrogen-bonding interactions involving the urea functional group and several DMSO solvent molecules. These CPs were examined as potential adsorbents for the reversible uptake of iodine from the solution. Theoretical analysis of the adsorption kinetics and isotherms was applied to examine the iodine adsorption data. The results correlated effectively with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model. Our results showed that in this family, the iodine uptake capacity was dependent on the anion (CP1 > CP2 > CP3), and the compound which contained chloride anions (CP1) showed the highest capacity to remove iodine. The maximum uptake capacity of 262.01 mg g−1 iodine over CP1 at room temperature based on the Freundlich model was achieved. Two dinuclear double oxygen-bridged iron(III) complexes made of the Fe2(μ2-OR)2 diamond-core cluster resulting from the coordination between iron(III) cations with calix[4]arene ligands and bearing two lower-rim-appended salicylideneamine (4) or o-methoxy-salicylideneamine coordinating sites (5), connected to the macrocyclic platform via three methylene bridges and displaying a salen-type coordination pocket, were synthesized and characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS), IR, TG-DSC and EA techniques. Independent of the presence of the o-methoxy group in the salicylideneamine moieties, the as-formed complexes contained two nonequivalent iron(III) atoms, both adopting a distorted octahedral coordination N2O4-environment but differing in the cis and trans positions of the nitrogen atoms within the metal coordination sphere, as attested by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and DFT-B3LYP calculations. The possible reason for the observed coordination mode of the macrocyclic ligands is their conformational behavior upon coordination with Fe(III) cations, as confirmed by DFT-B3LYP analysis. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy study showed that both Fe(III) atoms were present in high spin states at room temperature and at 80 K in the studied coordination compounds. The methoxy groups located at the ortho position of the salicylideneamine coordinating fragments were observed to influence the energy of the frontier orbitals, resulting in an increase in the bandgap energy from 1.97 eV to 2.07 eV, as experimentally established by solid-state voltammetry study of 42-Fe2 exp and 52-Fe2 exp, respectively. The interplay between the steric and electronic factors, emerging from the o-methoxy group within coordinating salicylideneamine moieties, seemed to have a negligible effect on the electronic properties of the prepared clusters but significantly impacted the frontier orbital energy distribution, according to both experimental data and theoretical calculations. In this paper, three new cobalt-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with different topologies, namely, {[Co(HL)(tib)(H2O)]·2H2O}n (1), [Co3(L)2(bibp)4(H2O)2]n (2) and [Co2(L)(bip)(μ3-OH)]n (3) (H3L = 3-(3,5-dicarboxylphenoxy)-6-carboxylpyridine, tib = 1,3,5-tirs(1-imidazolyl)benzene, bibp = 4,4′-bis(imidazolyl)biphenyl, bip = 3,5-bis(imidazoly-1-yl)toluene) synthesized by a hydrothermal method, were investigated. Different auxiliary ligands led to the diversity of the three MOFs in terms of structure and properties. Hereafter, the adsorption properties of the MOFs on different dyes were investigated; of interest is that the adsorption performance of MOF 3 on Congo red dye is particularly outstanding, including excellent performance in terms of removal rates, selectivity and recyclability. Its adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms were also investigated. Finally, its possible adsorption mechanism was analyzed by zeta potential measurements, infrared spectroscopy and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms. It was hypothesized that the exquisite confined microenvironments consisting of electrostatic interactions, a suitable pore volume, and complicated van der Waals forces of hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking played a critical role during the adsorption process.
