An essay is presented in which the author discusses the her experience of being defined by her gender in light of feminist theory and criticism by Judith Butler and Luce Irigaray. Topics include Irigaray's deconstruction of Plato's dialogue entitled "Timaeus," Lewis Carroll's book "Through the Looking Glass" and the protagonist Alice, and the politicization and gendered nature of language. Also discussed is the grounding of gender differences in materiality.
