According to the author, this is the first randomized, double-blinded, controlled trial of sodium bicarbonate infusion in patients undergoing heart surgery. However, he noted that the paper cannot really be deemed a study of acute kidney injury, as the definition of renal dysfunction is very liberal.

The article comments on the paper "Immune globulin G treatment of postcardiac surgery patients with score-identified severe systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS): The ESSICS study," by K. Werdan and colleagues. According to the authors, the paper reports the results of a phase III multicenter trial that intravenous immunoglobulin G administration does not affect postoperative morbidity at day 5 or mortality at 28 days in cardiac surgery patients with SIRS.
