The article comments on the paper "Sodium bicarbonate to prevent increases in serum creatinine after cardiac surgery: A pilot double-blind, randomized controlled trial," by M. Haase and colleagues. According to the author, this is the first randomized, double-blinded, controlled trial of sodium bicarbonate infusion in patients undergoing heart surgery. However, he noted that the paper cannot really be deemed a study of acute kidney injury, as the definition of renal dysfunction is very liberal.
