In October 1969, a debate between anti-apartheid activist Bishop Trevor Huddleston and Tory MP Enoch Powell was broadcast on British television. It presented viewers with opposing ideas about immigration, dignity and duty. This article claims that Huddleston's invocation of apartheid as an extreme case of racism turned the debate into a key moment for educating Britons about apartheid and about resistance to it. The paper argues that the debate presents an opportunity to address the absence of television from current scholarship concerning the role of culture in the global anti-apartheid struggle. In addition, it shows that Huddleston used the emerging genre of the televised debate as a platform to appeal for solidarity. Thus this event and the public reaction to it serve as a case study to explore solidarity as it was recently framed by David Featherstone. Huddleston and Powell's screened encounter fused domestic and post-imperial concerns: its analysis thus helps to problematise artificial divides between domestic and imperial historiographies. From a methodological point of view, the analysis of the debate as text and performance is juxtaposed with letters from viewers as well as newspaper coverage. This method illustrates first, the growing place of television as a site of political debate. Second, it positions television recordings as a new archive for scholars working both on the anti-apartheid movement and on racism in Britain. Utilising critical discourse analysis with corpus-assisted methods of analysis, this study examines the representation of China by English-language newspapers in China versus media in the UK. The study focuses on the linguistic realisation of attitudinal meanings in news reports about the One Belt, One Road (OBOR) Initiative. A sample of news reports by China Daily and Financial Times, dated between March 2015 and March 2016, was collected. Assisted by the corpora and corpus software AntConc and ConcGram, the study first investigated themes from the headlines and key paragraphs in the corpora of China Daily and Financial Times and then compared the classification scheme of the lexis using the concordance lines of key concepts in the Belt and Road Initiative in the two corpora. It was found that China Daily, like other Chinese mainstream media, has attempted to emphasise the initiative's positive attributes and construct positive images of China as a peace-loving nation, an international cooperator, and an emerging global economic and responsible power. How are we to understand the presence of a large and growing archive on ‘postcolonial running’ and the fact that there is so little discussion of sport and imperialism by those of us who work in postcolonial/African literatures? Much of this may be attributed to the disciplinary chasm between literary studies and sport studies. The critical work that emerges from this running archive needs to read the ways in which imperial plunder and philanthropy re-emerge in postcolonial running. This paper initiates a much-needed conversation between African literary studies, cultural studies, and sport studies, and it engages in a ‘reading’ (a key practice in literary studies) of ‘running’ (mostly under the purview of sport studies) in a film,Running the Sahara(2007), and a memoir,Running with the Kenyans(2012). It reads the two cultural documents’ participation in the growth of running tourism in Africa and the corresponding competition between white and black male athletes – tropes that may be traced back to nineteenth-century British imperialism. This article looks at the extent to which newspapers existed and developed in the British Empire. It looks at the relative size of the imperial press in relation to other European empires. It discusses the different forms the colonial press took: the settler press, the vernacular press and the missionary press. The article also looks at the developments which assisted the growth of colonial newspapers, such as the expansion of the telegraph system. In 2019 British Channel 4 reality TV programme The British Tribe Next Door putatively compares contemporary life in Britain to a small, sustainable indigenous Himba community of Otjeme in the Kaoko region of Namibia. An actual British terraced house was built and provided with all the modern furnishings. British Reality TV celebrity Scarlett Moffatt and her family would live in the house. The idea was to have a "reverse anthropological exchange" between the Moffatts and the "nomadic" Himba. Critics of the programme called it "racist and exploitative" and "the most immoral show of all time." Others in the British viewing public praised it for revealing the simplicity of the Himba way of life. But the programme fails to comprehend that "the Himba" is really an artificial construct created by the South Africa apartheid regime for its own racist ideas and then reenforced by advertising, the tourist industry in Namibia, and international media. This essay examines the evolution of that construct and its impact on the Himba. The British Tribe Next Door does reveal the persistence of problematic and condescending colonial tropes as well as the deception of Reality TV. While playing their tourist role, the Himba will pursue their own agendas in the Kaoko, Namibia, and the World. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
