A model is proposed to determine the sediment transport rate generated by the combined action of sea waves and tidal currents, the latter being modelled as a sequence of steady currents because of the large values of the Keulegan-Carpenter number of the tidal flows, which allow to neglect inertial effects in their modelling. The hydrodynamic module solves Reynolds-averaged momentum equations by introducing a two-equation turbulence model, which considers also the flow in the region closest to the sea bottom and enforces the no-slip condition and the vanishing of the turbulent kinetic energy at the bottom without the need to assume the existence of a logarithmic velocity profile and to fix the normal derivative of the turbulent kinetic energy close to the sea bed. Hence, the evaluation of the velocity profile in the near-bed region turns out to be accurate. The sediment transport module determines the sediment concentration and sediment transport for a mixture of non-cohesive and cohesive sediments. To validate the model, its predictions are compared with laboratory measurements and field data collected over rippled beds at two different tidal estuaries. Then, results are obtained for values of the parameters chosen to mimic a site close to Punta Umbría (Huelva, Spain) and considering different hydrodynamic conditions and different sediment mixtures. The influence of the waves on the suspended sediment concentration is lower for the cohesive fraction than for the non-cohesive fraction. For all the sediment mixtures, it turns out that the cohesive fraction is well mixed over the whole water depth, meanwhile the concentration of the non-cohesive fraction has significant values only near the bottom, thus showing that an accurate description of turbulence dynamics in the buffer layer and viscous sublayer (if it exists) is important to quantify the sediment transport rate. • Sediment transport module that reproduces the concentration of cohesive fraction is presented. • Tidal current is modelled as a sequence of steady-currents due to the large values of the Keulegan-Carpenter number. • Menter's turbulence model to predict the turbulence structure both in the wave bottom boundary layer and in the core region. • Turbulence dynamics description in the buffer layer and viscous sublayer is important to quantify the sediment transport. • Applicable to any type of sediment mixture. Simulating cross-shore sediment transport and associated sandbar migration is still a challenging task for phase-averaged coastal morphological models. Numerical studies have mostly relied on beach morphology prediction for calibration and validation, without examining in much detail the underlying hydrodynamics, sediment concentrations and transport rates. This paper reports on a new three-dimensional coastal morphodynamic model based on the hydrodynamic model of Zheng et al. (2017), combined with an advection-diffusion type suspended sediment transport model and the extended SANTOSS near-bed sediment transport formula of Van der A et al. (2013), to represent the key cross-shore transport mechanisms. The model is are calibrated based on comprehensive measurements from a large-scale laboratory experiment involving regular plunging breaking waves over an evolving sandbar, covering detailed comparisons on hydrodynamics, sediment suspension, transport rates, and bed level evolution. Separate validation using large scale wave flume experiments were also conducted to confirm the model's performance on different conditions. Good agreements are obtained between measurements and model results, which demonstrates the model's ability to reproduce cross-shore sediment transport processes under breaking waves correctly, given that the appropriate parameterizations for intra-wave processes are included. Model results also reveal the onshore near-bed transport is related to wave-induced near-bed streaming, wave skewness and asymmetry, and bed slope effects at different locations across the beach surface. The suspension of sediments by oscillatory flows is a complex case of fluid–particle interaction. The aim of this study is to provide insight into the spatial (time) and scale (frequency) relationships between wave-generated boundary layer turbulence and event-driven sediment transport beneath irregular shoaling and breaking waves in the nearshore of a prototype sandy barrier beach, using data collected through the Barrier Dynamics Experiment II (BARDEX II). Statistical, quadrant and spectral analyses reveal the anisotropic and intermittent nature of Reynolds’ stresses (momentum exchange) in the wave boundary layer, in all three orthogonal planes of motion. The fractional contribution of coherent turbulence structures appears to be dictated by the structural form of eddies beneath plunging and spilling breakers, which in turn define the net sediment mobilisation towards or away from the barrier, and hence ensuing erosion and accretion trends. A standing transverse wave is also observed in the flume, contributing to the substantial skewness of spanwise turbulence. Observed low frequency suspensions are closely linked to the mean flow (wave) properties. Wavelet analysis reveals that the entrainment and maintenance of sediment in suspension through a cluster of bursting sequence is associated with the passage of intermittent slowly-evolving large structures, which can modulate the frequency of smaller motions. Outside the boundary layer, small scale, higher frequency turbulence drives the suspension. The extent to which these spatially varied perturbation clusters persist is associated with suspension events in the high frequency scales, decaying as the turbulent motion ceases to supply momentum, with an observed hysteresis effect. The long-distance transport of Yellow River sediments has formed an omega-shaped ('Ω') distal muddy deposit in the Yellow Sea. Numerous studies have investigated the sediment dynamics and sedimentary evolution of the deposit, but several key questions remain unanswered due to insufficient observations. To reveal the mechanisms of sediment dynamics and quantify sediment transport and deposition processes, this study collected field datasets in the depocenter of the muddy deposit off the Shandong Peninsula. Bottom mounted tripods were deployed from August 18 to 27, 2017, and from February 23 to March 2, 2018, during which two strong wind events with speeds of over 10.8 m/s occurred. The results showed that near-bed suspended sediment concentration responded directly to varying hydrodynamic conditions, and significant differences in suspended sediment concentration between two wind events could be ascribed to a number of factors (e.g., tidal current, wave periods, wind stress, turbulence). The harmonic analysis demonstrated that suspended sediment variations during the spring tide were directed mainly by resuspension, while resuspension and advection contributed equally at neap tide. The variations in background suspended sediment concentration can be ascribed to the residual current. Furthermore, the sediment transport pattern is similar to the pattern of water circulation. Generally, the along-shore suspended sediment flux is about one order of magnitude higher than the cross-shore flux. In summer, the suspended sediment was transported mainly downcoast. In winter, sediment was transported downcoast during wavy periods and upcoast during calm periods. Advection dominated sediment flux in most cases, except during wavy periods when local resuspension increased significantly, and the contribution of resuspension term to along-shore flux was up to 87%. Meanwhile, cross-shore flux also increased significantly under strong winds, which was simultaneously modulated by downcoast and offshore winds. After statistical analysis, we found that offshore winds controlled the cross-shore sediment transport in winter. Using parameterized calculation and statistical analysis, the average accumulation rate of the study site was estimated to be 0.6 cm/yr. During calm periods, lower background sediment concentration in summer led to lower deposition rates than in winter. In addition, the frequent strong wind events in winter cause extremely high erosion rates. Net wave-induced sheet-flow sediment transport rate, Q net , can be produced by two co-existing effects: nonlinear waveshape and wave propagation, which alter the intra-wave boundary layer flow and sediment concentration. A intriguing question is whether the two effects can be simply added (the additivity hypothesis). This paper addresses this question based on simulations of a one-phase numerical model for sheet-flow sediment transport and examinations of the governing equations for boundary layer flow and sediment concentration. The additivity for the mean velocity (or streaming) is first demonstrated under typical field conditions. The main reason is that the two driving forces, i.e., momentum transfer produced by wave propagation and intra-wave asymmetry of flow turbulence produced by nonlinear waveshape, do not affect each other. The net sediment flux is separated into wave- and current-related components. Since the mean concentration profile is determined by the first-order process, the 'current'-related flux produced by the two effects, following the mean velocity, can be superimposed. After examining the leading Fourier components, the wave-related flux is also found to follow the additivity hypothesis. The findings are confirmed by numerical experiments. Abstract: Sediment transport models require appropriate representation of near-bed processes. We aim here to explore the parameterizations of bed shear stress, bed load transport rate and near-bed sediment erosion rate under the sheet flow regime. To that end, we employ a one-dimensional two-phase sheet flow model which is able to resolve the intrawave boundary layer and sediment dynamics at a length scale on the order of the sediment grain. We have conducted 79 numerical simulations to cover a range of collinear wave and current conditions and sediment diameters in the range 210–460 . The numerical results confirm that the intrawave bed shear stress leads the free stream velocity, and we assess an explicit expression relating the phase lead to the maximum velocity, wave period and bed roughness. The numerical sheet flow model is also used to provide estimates for the bed load transport rate and to inspect the near-bed sediment erosion. A common bed load transport rate formulation and two typical reference concentration approaches are assessed. A dependence of the bed load transport rate on the sediment grain diameter is observed and parameterized. Finally, the intrawave near-bed vertical sediment flux is further investigated and related to the time derivative of the bed shear stress. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The boundary layer flow and the net sediment transport beneath asymmetrical waves have been examined by a turbulence boundary layer model in conjunction with a diffusion model for suspended sediments based on the linearized boundary layer equations with horizontally uniform forcing. The turbulence closure is provided by a high Reynolds number k–ε model. The flow model and sediment transport model have been verified against existing laboratory measurements for sheet flow conditions. Overall, these comparisons show that the mean (wave-averaged) velocity profile, sediment flux and total sediment transport (including mean bedload transport) are well predicted by the present model. A further investigation of the boundary layer structure shows the mechanisms causing the near-bed backflow (opposing the drift direction of the outer wave velocity). The effect of roughness and asymmetry on the mean boundary layer flow and sediment transport beneath asymmetrical waves have been investigated. The wave friction factor, the mean bedload transport and the mean velocity profiles are given for a wide range of near-bed wave excursion to bed roughness ratios. Moreover, for asymmetrical waves with the same mean drift velocity, but with different asymmetry, the wave with strongest asymmetry induces the largest mean sediment transport. For moderate Shields number flows, the characteristic minimum sediment transport prediction error is estimated to be of the order of a factor of 2, even in stationary and horizontally homogeneous flows over a flat bottom. For oscillatory flows over ripples the same error is judged to be comparable to a factor of 4.In actual flows when the flow, sediments and bottom shape have to be predicted, moderate estimation errors for the near bottom turbulent stress results in characteristic minimum sediment transport error that is probably at least of the order of a factor of 10.The equations for the large-scale average flow require nonstandard parameterizations of the smaller scale ripple flow and boundary conditions. Only weakly founded closure relations are available for this. The error of the large-scale sediment transport can therefore not be quantified without extensive data comparisons. As extrapolated from the simpler estimates, it appears plausible that it could be significantly larger than a factor of 10.When the sediment transport variability is large, both in reality and in models, many models can probably be adjusted to fit the few data available. Field observations of shoreface benthic processes made in the Middle Atlantic Bight off Duck, N.C. and on the Eel River shelf off northern California have yielded several types of evidence that gravity-induced downslope transport of suspended sediment may constitute an important, but episodic, mode of across-shelf transport during storms. Observed manifestations of the inferred gravity flows include side scan images showing abrupt interfaces between fine sediment “blankets” and coarser sands, rapid bed accretion during the waning phases of storms and short-lived periods of accelerated seaward sediment flux following groups of higher waves. To explore the possibility that gravity-driven transport may be episodically significant in energetic shoreface and shelf environments, we applied a relatively simple analytical model that considers the effects of wave and current turbulent friction in modulating the downslope response of turbidity-induced gravity currents as well as in suspending sediment to produce negative buoyancy. The theory was applied to data on benthic flows from three phases of a storm event off Duck in October 1994. Results indicate that the gradient Richardson number, Ri, remained appreciably below the critical value of 0.25 during average conditions and during high wave groups. During lulls, however, Ri briefly became supercritical within a few tens of centimeters above the bed implying short-lived turbulence suppression. On the Eel River shelf, direct observations show that, within the thin ((O)10 cm) muddy layer, Ri values also fluctuated between subcritical (<1/4) during groups and supercritical (>1/4) during lulls again implying that stratification suppressed production of turbulence during lulls. Downslope transport was observed during both high and low wave packets but accelerated during lulls as in the Duck case. We conclude that gravity-induced downslope transport of sediment suspended by waves is likely to be an important mode of across-shelf transport on the inner shelf of energetic sandy environments and the mid-shelf of energetic muddy environments. Such transports are most likely pulsational, with high turbidities and buoyancy anomalies being created by the high stresses associated with groups of large waves and moderately rapid but brief downslope movement occurring when bed stresses are temporarily relaxed during the lulls between high groups.
