Abstract: The main coastal processes controlling water, nutrients and sediment transport are considered in the present issue, to emphasize the need for multidisciplinary approaches to achieve a proper assessment of the environmental status in coastal zones (such as the Galician area). Special emphasis has been placed upon the interpretation of local processes, within the context of a global perspective, especially for those regions with environmental properties similar to Galicia.
