Abstract

This article focuses on the book "Emerging Issues in the Twenty-First Century World-System," edited by Wilma A. Dunaway. The book is published in two volumes "Crises and Resistance in the Twenty-First Century World-System" and "New Theoretical Directions for the Twenty-First Century World-System." The collection of papers in this book is the outcome of a colloquium held by the Political Economy of the World-System Section of the American Sociological Association, which brings together social scientists sharing the same intellectual orientations as Wallerstein. What these researchers have in common is not only their choice of subject, the processes of world-systems, and their rejection of a monodisciplinary approach, but also their common commitment to a certain number of leading ideas, the most important of which deal with the modem world-system. Both volumes also stick to their stated commitment to pluridisciplinarity and frequently make links between different academic disciplines. Economics, history, political science and sociology in particular are constantly mobilized or referred to, with a shared concern to avoid the illusion of knowledge propounded by over-technical proposals, especially ones couched in economic discourse.

Abstract

This article focuses on the book "Emerging Issues in the Twenty-First Century World-System," edited by Wilma A. Dunaway. The book has two volumes "Crises and Resistance in the Twenty-First Century World-System" and "New Theoretical Directions for the Twenty-First Century World-System." In these two volumes, authors approach the analytical dimensions of the past and the present to encourage people to anticipate constraints on future possibilities in terms of the world-system perspective, by far the most comprehensive approach to understanding world history up to the present time. Chapters in these volumes represent many of the papers that were presented at the 25th Annual Conference of the Political Economy of the World-System Section of the American Sociological Association, held in April 2001, at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The premise of the conference, as summarized by Dunaway and others, is that there are structural contradictions: ones that are threatening the accumulation of capital and that relate to the pursuit of cheap labor and ecological exhaustion; those that are pushing the system toward chaos and turmoil, notably those that relate to the declining role of the nation state and antisystemic resistance; as well as crises of the representation of the oppressed.

7. Towards the Economics of Knowledge.

Abstract

There has not been an economics of knowledge, as there has been a distinguished tradition of the sociology of knowledge. Sociologists of knowledge, long occupied with the "ideology problem," stand to benefit greatly from economist Fritz Machlup's efforts, as they already have benefited from his earlier publications, especially "The Production and Distribution of Knowledge in the United States." In fact, economists have traditionally bracketed many of the significant issues that relate to knowledge, for example, by assuming in theories of supply and demand, competition and monopoly, that knowledge is equally distributed, which amounts to saying that sellers know the highest prices they can obtain and that buyers know the lowest prices for what they want to purchase. It has also been assumed that producers know the technology of their time. However, this is not to say that economists have neglected the knowledge factor altogether, but, as Machlup says, "with one very minor exception-namely, the theory of patent protection-the stock of knowledge and especially the state of technology have customarily been treated as exogenous variables or as trend functions in economic models."

Abstract

This article focuses on the book "The Modern World-System," vol. 2 which covers the adaptation of European societies, states and colonies to slowed economic growth in the seventeenth century. It further covers the involution of economic peripheries in Eastern Europe and Latin America in response to economic recession, and expansion in the Caribbean and North American colonies in response to new economic opportunities. Also, it covers the efforts, of varying success, of secondary competitors like Spain, Portugal, Northern Italy, western parts of Germany, Sweden, Prussia and Austria, to mobilize enough to sustain a mercantilist strategy and avoid dependence and peripheralization. Like its first volume, it is a useful and impressive achievement, but it is much clearer, and more coherently organized. It is less defensive, has less obscure definitional material, and goes off into fewer byzantine sidelines. It provides an excellent and canonical example of the whole current discussion about the world political economy.

9. Cohort Processes and the Definition of Sociology.

Abstract

The article compares and contrasts the coverage of the new "Handbook of Sociology" with that of the "Annual Review of Sociology." While discussing reactions to the book, however, it was found that there were many common concerns. It was felt that the "Handbook" is limited in its notion of the scope of sociology. It was found that the picture it paints of society to be rather static. A frequent disregard for history, time, and the flow of events was noted. It was surprising that there was an omission of law from the section on institutions. Chapters on culture and on language and symbols were missing. The lack of chapters on communities was puzzling. The parsimonious partition of the substance of sociology into inequality, institutions, and social processes seems a bit low-key in the "Handbook." The "Annual Review of Sociology" uses a 12-category scheme for classifying, and indeed for soliciting articles. The first two of each system are pretty much the same. The third category of the "Handbook" covers much of the same material as the next three categories of the "Review," that is, institutions and culture, formal organizations, and political and economic sociology.

This book consists of a series of papers in which various authors examine demographic research and spatial policy with a focus on the experience of the Netherlands. The book is in five parts. The first part includes two papers in which the basic issues concerning demographic research into Dutch policy on spatial distribution and migration are outlined. The second part contains three papers describing the sources of data. The third part consists of five papers in which exploratory and explanatory analyses of migration are developed. The fourth part is concerned with projections and contains five papers dealing with regional population forecasts inter-regional migration in a labor market mode uncertainty and migration policy targets migration and housing and a multiregional model for population projections. A final section contains two papers on the use of demographic research in physical planning and spatial policy.

Abstract

The past 20 years have witnessed an exploration of research by sociologists into market processes of all kinds. Sociologist Harrison White's book, "Markets From Networks," is the most elaborate theoretical attempt to produce a sociologically based mathematical model of market actors. White preserves a number of the key ideas of economics, such as competition as the driving force, profit maximization on the part of firms, and the rationality of market actors. White conceives of production markets as composed of firms that have to deal with uncertainty in what he calls upstream and downstream. Most of the book is oriented toward trying to understand how market actors manage this uncertainty by producing what White calls a role structure. At the end of the book, White suggests that the agenda should be to provide better parameters of the model, generalize the model to markets other than production markets, and try to link the model more explicitly to how the firms organize internally.

Abstract

The book "New Forms of Consumption: Consumers, Culture, and Commodification" attempts to offer both theoretical and historical guidance to the contemporary study of the sociology of consumption in late capitalism. The central organizing theme of the volume, edited by sociologist Mark Gottdiener, is the application of a broad, political economy framework to the analysis of commodification in a variety of historical and cultural contexts. The anthology is an important compilation of the different debates and approaches to consumption studies. The chapters are generally well referenced and offer substantive contributions to their areas of specialized interest. The final chapter by Gottdiener is a previously published article on the political economy of place and the rise of themed spaces of consumption, which fails to bring closure to the disparate foci of the book. The book lacks a concluding chapter that identifies the current defeiciencies and future directions of the field.
