Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed a significant pressure on the nursing workforce, leading to an increased risk of infection and work-related issues impacting nurses' mental health. This review aims to explore the workplace challenges faced by older nurses and their impact on mental health., Method: This qualitative systematic review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology., Results: The review included 32 studies and identified three interconnected themes: heavy workload and nature of nursing, lack of recognition and feeling undervalued, and challenges in balancing personal life and work. These themes illustrated the complexity of the workplace challenges faced by older nurses., Discussion and Conclusion: Workplace demands and shift work were common negative contributors to mental health and wellbeing. The physical and cognitive capacity of older nurses may diminish due to age-related changes, making the workload more challenging. Recognition and support from the organisation, especially from management and leadership, played a crucial role in nurses' resilience.

Background: Misconceptions about men in nursing may influence recruitment and retention, further perpetuating the gender diversity imbalance in the nursing workforce. Identifying misconceptions and implementing early intervention strategies to address these deep-rooted stereotypes remain challenging but is considered critical to support students who are commencing a nursing career., Objective: To develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of the ' Ge nder Mi sconceptions of me N in nurs I ng (GEMINI) Scale., Design: Cross-sectional survey., Methods: Pre-registration nursing students enrolled in undergraduate nursing programmes across 16 nursing institutions in Australia were surveyed from July to September 2021. The 17-item self-report GEMINI Scale measured the gender misconceptions of men in nursing., Results: Of the 1410 completed surveys, data from 683 (45%) women were used for exploratory factor analysis showing a one factor structure, while data from 727 men (47%) were used for confirmatory factor analysis of the 17-item GEMINI Scale, which showed a good model fit. The scale demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha of 0.892). Men were found to have higher gender misconceptions ( p  < 0.001) while respondents who: (a) identified nursing as their first career choice ( p  = 0.002); (b) were in their final year of programme enrolment ( p  = 0.016); and (c) engaged in health-related paid work ( p  = 0.002) had lower gender misconceptions., Conclusion: The GEMINI Scale is a robust, valid, reliable, and easy to administer tool to assess misconceptions about men in nursing, which may potentially influence academic performance and retention. Identifying and addressing specific elements of misconceptions could inform targeted strategies to support retention and decrease attrition among these students., Impact Statement: Genderism harms nursing, as well as the men and women working in the profession. Recruitment and retention of men into nursing is needed to cultivate male role models and diversify the workforce, however this is impeded by negative portrayals in popular culture and misconceptions entrenched in society.

Background : Dementia can lead to family, medical, and social burdens. Long-term care issues of older adults in Taiwan and the burdens of caregivers are beginning to be taken seriously by the government. Relevant resources for older adults have gradually increased; however, older adults and caregivers are often not likely to seek resources and might not know what resources are available. Aims : In this study, we screened for cognitive impairment among community-dwelling older adults, and investigated knowledge of dementia among older adults, awareness of long-term care resources, and the degree of need from caregivers' perspectives. Design : A cross-sectional research design with purposive sampling was used. Methods : This study was carried out in a city in northern Taiwan. In total, 137 older adults completed the surveys with the following inclusion criteria: (1) being 65 years or older and (2) living at home. Additionally, 128 caregivers were also interviewed. Face-to-face interviews were conducted and self-administered questionnaires were delivered to all enrolled participants including: (1) a questionnaire of knowledge of dementia, (2) the Ascertain Dementia (AD)-8 questionnaire; and (3) awareness of community-based long-term care resources and needs questionnaire. Results : Results showed that 16.8% of older adults required a further definite diagnosis of dementia and had relatively low knowledge regarding dementia. Caregivers reported a low level of awareness regarding available long-term care resources despite needing and/or using those resources. Conclusions : Policymakers and practitioners should proactively promote supportive services for older adults and caregivers in the community. Future research should explore strategies for enhancing resource utilization and accessing tailored support to meet the needs of older adults with dementia.

Aims: To compare the differences between acupoint pressure, abdominal massage and laxatives in treatment of constipation for residents in two nursing homes. Background: There is lack of evidence on the utility of complementary therapies in the management of constipation among older adults. Design: Quasi-experimental. Methods: A total of 90 participants from two nursing homes in Taiwan were assigned to three groups: the control group (with laxatives only), group I (with laxatives and abdominal massage) and group II (with laxatives, acupoint pressure therapy [APT] and abdominal massage). The intervention was performed over 10 days. A double-blind technique was applied in both participants and the outcome assessors. Constipation as main outcome was evaluated and recorded for 10 days. Observation of the frequency of defecation and the consistency, particularly firmness of faeces over each 24 h' period was recorded. The Transparent Reporting of Evaluations with Nonrandomized Designs (TREND) checklist was utilised in reporting methods and findings. Results: Three variations were revealed as interface factors and showed significant differences in each group. The results showed a statistically significant decrease in constipation in the experimental groups I and II. The scores of defecation frequency, difficulty degree and time of defecation, stool quality and awareness of defecation were obviously improved after treatment. Conclusions: We concluded APT could be used in conjunction with laxatives and must be considered as a long-term intervention. The combination of APT, abdominal massage and laxatives is superior to both abdominal massage with laxatives and laxatives alone. Relevance to clinical practice: Acupoint pressure as an effective complementary therapy of constipation among older adults living in nursing home provides a non-pharmacological, independent nursing intervention that nurses could use. This is relevant to nursing home settings where nurses make autonomous decision on important clinical assessments and interventions.

Aim : To explore the impact of educational interventions for patients living with indwelling urinary catheters. Methods : Systematic scoping review in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, guided by Cochrane methodology, quality appraisal using Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (CEBM) Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), GRADE criteria and Quality Improvement Minimum Quality Criteria Set Version 1.0 (QI-MQCS V 1.0) tools. Studies ( n  = 446) were retrieved from CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Scopus and Medline from 2000 to 2020. Results : A total of 15 primary research studies were included in the narrative thematic synthesis, nine were from the USA, two from Australia, two from the UK, one from Italy and one from Turkey. These 15 studies were published between 2003 and 2019 and accounted for 19918 patients with an age range 15-99 years. Study design varied; there were 11 quantitative and 4 qualitative studies. Studies were of low-moderate quality. A total of four themes were identified; (i) information needs of patients living with long-term catheters; (ii) core learning content and educational approaches; (iii) feasibility and effectiveness of educational interventions to reduce complications and improve quality of life; and (iv) common outcome measures. Conclusion : The dissemination of information and the delivery of urinary catheter education to patients is inadequate. Core components of educational interventions should address fluid intake, bowel management, hygiene and self-monitoring/management, including adverse events. There is a need for future robust trials of educational and self-management interventions to improve the quality of life of patients living with indwelling urinary catheters in the community. Impact : This review addressed the educational needs of patients living with indwelling urinary catheters and the impact of educational interventions. Despite the heterogeneity in educational interventions, all studies included in this review reported the specific approach undertaken was effective in minimising catheter-associated complications and improving the quality of life of patients.

Background: One of the many socio-cultural issues impacting older immigrants in host countries is the cultural expectations of filial piety from their adult children., Objective: To understand older Filipino immigrants' beliefs and values towards filial expectations., Design: Focused ethnography., Results: Two major themes were identified. The first theme 'moving away from filial expectations' drew out older Filipino's changing views of cultural expectations from their adult children. The second theme 'maintaining cultural values through good family relationships' highlighted the importance of acknowledging the cultural values considered to be most important by older Filipinos, which was having harmonious relationships and avoiding family conflict., Conclusion: The reconfigured expectation was salient with participants' who identified 'not being a burden' to their adult children and the ardent desire to maintain positive family relationships. Impact Statement: Nurses need to be aware of changes to our current understanding of filial piety when providing care to older Filipinos.

Background: Migrant families caring for family members with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) face considerable socioeconomic burden and isolation., Aim: To examine the cultural needs, beliefs and health seeking behaviours of migrant Turkish family member caregivers., Design: An ethnographic approach was used employing in depth interviews., Methods: Turkish caregivers residing in Melbourne, Australia were purposively sampled. Ten participants undertook face-to-face interviews in Turkish and English, followed by coding, transcription and thematic analysis., Results: Common themes were: (i) characteristics of MCI; (ii) care complicates our lives; (iii) beneficial coping strategies; (iv) adherence to cultural beliefs; (v) an uncertain future; (vi) interfacing with community health providers: need to understand Turkish culture (vii) need for long-term support. Migrant caregivers voiced undergoing considerable stress exacerbated by their cultural obligations., Conclusions: Establishing ethnically appropriate community support groups and advocating for a health workforce tier of representative migrant health care workers is recommended as a new role for community nurses.
