Aim: To assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of Registered Nurses working in residential aged care facilities pertaining to pain management for residents living with dementia. Background: Sub-optimal pain management continues for people living with dementia in residential aged care. Registered Nurses are the pivotal staff responsible for complex assessment and management of people residing in residential aged care facilities. Design and methods: :This integrative literature review was informed by Whittemore (2005). Searching and screening followed the PRISMA guidelines. Results: Thirteen papers were identified, the major themes identified were gaps in knowledge and skills, uncertainty of assessment, and delays in treatment. Conclusion: Registered Nurses require education on pain management for people living with dementia in residential aged care. Broader issues in residential aged care contribute to the problem and require examination. Canada, like many countries, is in the midst of primary health care reform.A key priority is to improve access to primary health care, especially in remote communities and areas with physician shortages. As a result, there is an increased emphasis on the integration of primary health care nurse practitioners. As of March 2006, legislation exists in all provinces and two territories in Canada that allows nurse practitioners (NPs) to implement their expanded nursing role. In this paper, we will briefly review the historical development of the NP role in Canada and situate it in the international context; describe the NP role, supply of NPs in the country, and the settings in which they work; propose an NP practice model framework; summarize facilitators and barriers to NP role implementation in primary health care delivery; and outline strategies to address the barriers. In Australia, undertaking cultural safety education often evokes strong emotional responses by health students. Despite the potential for emotion to drive transformative learning in this space, measures of emotion are uncommon. To review existing tools that intend to measure emotional components of learning in relation to cultural safety education. Articles published in English from January 2005 to January 2020; reported studies from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and United States of America; and measured an emotional construct/s after an education intervention offered to university students enrolled in a health programme were included. Studies were assessed for quality according to the Critical Appraisals Skills Programme criteria. Eight articles were reviewed; five conducted in the United States of America, and three in Australia. Intervention type, measures, methodological rigour and outcomes varied. Studies predominately measured empathy, guilt and/or fear. Although students' emotional responses were measured, processes for students to reflect upon these reactions were not incorporated in the classroom. The review has implications for future research and curricula through developments in measuring and acting upon emotion in cultural safety education for nursing students in Australia. Background: Chronic pain is a complex condition frequently encountered in nursing practice, resulting in negative multidimensional effects on the individual and healthcare system. Increasingly, people with chronic pain are turning to Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) to manage their pain. Objectives: To explore the relationship between healthcare access, unmet healthcare needs, and practitioner-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine use in adults with chronic pain. Design: A secondary analysis of 1688 individuals ≥18 years old self-reporting chronic pain from Cycle 9 of the Canadian National Population Health Survey. Methods: Multivariate logistic regression and descriptive statistics. Results: When controlling for demographics and health status indicators, the presence of unmet healthcare needs was found to predict CAM use (p < 0.001; OR 2.02; CI [1.45, 2.81]), along with sex, education, income, employment, and restriction of activities. Conclusion: People may be using CAM due to shortcomings of the conventional healthcare system, with implications for policymakers and healthcare professions to develop more integrative strategies to improve chronic pain management. Impact statement: Having unmet healthcare needs is associated with two-fold increased odds of using Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Canadian adults with chronic pain. Background: Staying in the hospital can be a very stressful experience for older people with dementia. A familiar face and reassuring voice of a family member or friend can offer a sense of safety and comfort. Aims: To explore the feasibility and acceptability of using an iPad Simulated Presence Therapy intervention with hospitalized older people with dementia. Design: We used a mixed-method design, incorporated video-ethnographic methods, video-recorded observations, and staff interviews. Methods: Four people with dementia from an older adult mental health hospital unit in British Columbia, Canada participated in two weeks of iPad Simulated Presence Therapy intervention. The intervention involved the older person watching a one-minute video prepared by their family prior to receiving care. The video included a reassuring, comforting and supportive message to be played to the older adult with dementia while staff perform a specific care task. The care interactions with the iPad intervention were video-recorded. Staff interviews were conducted to elicit perceived enabling factors and barriers to use the iPad intervention in their practice. Using an inductive and deductive approach, we applied a qualitative thematic analysis to identify themes in our data set. Results: We identified four themes: (a) positive responses, (b) person-centred care, (c) video content, and (d) technical skills. Conclusion: The iPad delivered Simulated Presence Therapy is an acceptable and feasible means of supporting the care of older people with dementia in the hospital setting. Background: The issue of home care for older people is concerned with availability of information. Aim: To compare delivery of electronic health record (EHR) in home care for older people. Methods: An applied-comparative library study was conducted in 2015. The study population included Canada, Australia, England, Denmark and Taiwan. Data were extracted from literature related to EHR on home care and older people. Results: The main functions included collection, documentation of lab and imaging results. Common data elements were demographic information, prescriptions and nursing observations. Security needs were identified according to the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Document Act, enacted in Canada and the Privacy Act 1988 in Australia. Conclusions: The basic functions of EHR are determined as collection, documentation and retrieval of information. It is recommended that legislation protects access to information on personal health and implementation of a national unique identifier applicable to shared data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
