Background: COVID-19 has caused significant disruption. This has been particularly evident within the university student population where their traditional ways of learning were abruptly reorganised and support structures removed. Objective: This paper aims to explore undergraduate student nurses' perceptions of the support required from the university during COVID-19 using the Achievement Goal Theory framework. Design: Data were collected via an online survey of undergraduate student nurses from an Australian university. This paper is reporting the data from a single open-ended item asking participants about their support needs from the University. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Of the 178 students who responded 206 individual statements were provided about the support they would like from the university. Four primary themes emerged, Support beyond academia, Academic support, Online learning readiness and Clinical practice units and clinical placement. The students identified that their needs during this pandemic include financial needs, social isolation, needs for more communication and unpreparedness for online teaching. Conclusion: Several factors were identified by participants about the additional support required from the university during COVID-19. Understanding and addressing these factors have the potential to improve student support during COVID-19 and support students in future crises. The older adult population in the US is burgeoning and nurses will be at the forefront of providing the skilled, compassionate care needed for them. Undergraduate nursing students do not commonly desire to work with older adults after graduation, likely related to negative attitudes, which can adversely impact the care provided. To determine the effect of a course using a suite of teaching techniques designed to positively shift nursing students' attitudes toward older adults. A one group pre and post-test design was used to test the effect of completion of the Nursing Care of the Older Adult course on baccalaureate undergraduate junior level nursing students' attitudes toward older people at a large University in the Midwest for two consecutive years (2019 and 2020). A quality assurance evaluation using a voluntary anonymous survey (Kogan's Attitude Toward Older People Instrument) on paper (2019) or online (2020) took place on the first and last day of class. Normality was assessed and the central limit theorem was applicable, therefore, independent samples t-tests were performed on the primary outcome, total score, with the primary predictor as pre vs post. This process was repeated on a 2020 cohort in the same course with a paired samples t-test, as paired subject ID's were recorded in 2020 but not in 2019. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on all parts of academic life, no direct comparisons were made between the 2019 and 2020 samples. Course content included lectures, videos, MaskEd™ simulation, group work, case studies and clinical experiences. Both cohorts had significant improvement in the total Kogan instrument score, indicating a positive change in attitudes toward older adults [2019 pre M 167.2, SD 20.3 to post M 176.9, SD 22.4, t (292.43) = 3.96, p < 0.001 and 2020 pre M 179.4, SD 21.3 to post M 188.1, SD 22.2, t (70) = −5.61, p < 0.001]. Background and study aim: Adolescent substance abuse significantly impacts on the lives of mothers. This paper explores the coping responses of mothers whose adolescents have been admitted to treatment for substance abuse. Design and method: A multiple case study design was adopted and the data were collected through one-on-one interviews facilitated by the Lifegrid. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to interrogate the data. Results: Coping emerged as a complex construct in our analysis. The mother's used problem-focused and emotion-focused coping in different combinations of withdrawing, tolerating and engaged coping responses. The mother's coping responses were also influenced by individual and relational factors like subjective distress and the mother-adolescent relationship. Conclusions: We argue that research and practice initiatives should consider using a multidimensional perspective of parental coping that recognises the heterogeneity of mother's coping responses. Background: Public policy across the world is increasingly focusing on the role of mental health promotion in whole of health strategies. There is a growing evidence-base that mental health promotion, delivered by trained facilitators, is effective in promoting self-awareness and self-care to prevent the damaging effects of ongoing stress in one's life and to promote early detection of any possible emerging mental health problems. Within Australia, however, few clinicians or school staff are confident or trained in mental health promotion. Aims: This paper reports the results of a two-day training designed for facilitators of a mental health program for secondary-school students. The goal was to develop facilitators' knowledge and understanding of best practice in youth mental health promotion and to increase their confidence in delivering the program. Design: A mixed methods evaluation assessed the impact that a solution-focused training program had on participating facilitators. Methods: A questionnaire was created and included eight quantitative items and one open ended, qualitative question. Twenty-seven nurses and guidance officers from central Queensland were recruited via convenience sampling and data were analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Results: The evaluation revealed that participants' perception of their ability to facilitate a youth mental health program significantly improved after completing the training. Qualitative data indicated that participants found the professional development experience to be valuable, provide useful and transferable skills, and believed it to be necessary for mental health promotion work. Conclusion: By providing detailed description of the program's content and processes, other mental health professionals may be inspired to further develop effective learning experiences. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this paper was to evaluate the impact of phone support on sick day management of young people with type 1 diabetes. Method: Qualitative exploratory study to understand the usage of a phone support service available, 8am to 8.30pm, seven days a week. Inclusion criteria were: (a) young people with type 1 diabetes who attend an age-specific service; (b) experienced acute diabetes crisis. Interviews were coded for themes using QSR NVivo™ Version 11 software. Findings were examined through the theoretical lens of the Health Belief Model. Results: Of 20 eligible individuals, 8 participated in the study. Five avoided emergency presentation by accessing the phone support service; three who did not were admitted for diabetic ketoacidosis. The interviews generated 3 major themes: (a) self-efficacy, (b) cues to action, (c) susceptibility. Conclusion: Enhancing self-efficacy and promoting confidence to seek help early during an acute health crisis enables young people to effectively self-manage and avoid hospitalization. Background: Medical Records Reviews (MRR) are commonly used in research and quality activities in health care, however, there is a paucity of literature offering a step by step guide to devising a reliable, user-friendly tool. Aim: This instructional paper focuses on the stages used to design and implement successful MRR using examples from two reviews in Australian rural hospitals investigating the responses of Registered Nurses to patient deterioration, and guided by time series principals. Methods: The MRR were conducted in two rural hospitals in conjunction with a simulation learning intervention where nurses rehearsed clinical management of a deteriorating patient. A six-step template is presented to guide practitioners on how to design and use a MRR tool. In respect of professional nursing, the term scope of practice is regularly used, yet is often poorly defined both in Australia and internationally. This study explores the determinants of scope of practice from a national sample of Australian registered nurses using an online survey (Scope-QAu). This paper reports on two parts of a large cross-sectional survey wherein 1231 registered nurses in Australia provided data on how they determined their scope of practice. Scope of practice in the Australian nursing context is influenced by a range of professional publications, guidelines and standards, as well as professional peers and one's own judgement. Findings reveal that few demographic characteristics predicted the way nurses determined their own scope of practice. Nurses commonly relied upon three professional publications, peers and line managers, to establish their individual scope of practice. Background: Undergraduate preparation is important in ensuring health care professionals are prepared to identify and respond to intimate partner violence (IPV). Previous studies confirm this education is highly variable and IPV-related content remains marginalised in undergraduate nursing, midwifery and paramedicine curricula. Aim: To investigate frontline academics' attitudes and beliefs in relation to the inclusion of IPV-related content in the aforementioned degrees. Design: A large multi-phase mixed methods Australian case study of Australian undergraduate nursing, midwifery and paramedicine degrees. In this paper, components of the survey and interviews from this study will be reported on. Methods: Quantitative comparative analysis of a 51-item on-line survey and qualitative thematic analysis of guided conversational interviews. Results: Across Australian universities IPV remains poorly embedded in nursing, midwifery and paramedicine programmes. Academics report a range of barriers to such inclusion, including an already overcrowded curriculum, a lack of confident and competent academics to teach this content area and a lack of support for this content inclusion. One factor statistically significant in its association with non-inclusion of IPV-related content was academic attitudes of professional role resistance. Gender was also identified as a significant factor associated with non-inclusion and resistant professional attitudes. Qualitative interviews revealed that only six of the 18 participants identified IPV-related care as within their scope of practice, with professional role resistance a common theme identified. Conclusion: Though professional organisation and policy makers now advocate for the inclusion of IPV-related content in the undergraduate preparation of nurses and midwives, work remains to address gendered and resistant attitudes amongst academics. Background: Enrolled nurses (ENs) across Australia precept nursing students in the clinical field. Yet learning about the preceptoring role is not widely available to ENs. Educational innovation: EN's in this study participated in a professional development project that utilised the material of an online learning resource, originally designed to inspire clinical registered nurses (RNs), and RN teachers, to develop teaching innovations in their role. Aim: The aim of this paper is to report the results of a pre-post-test questionnaire designed to evaluate the impact of the professional development intervention. Results: The analysis showed high scoring means with many items in the questionnaire statistically significant (p < .05, CI 95%). Conclusion: Results indicated positive differences in a number of teaching capabilities between pre- and post-test scores. Background: Implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) is a major initiative within health care settings to ensure clinical and policy decisions incorporate best available evidence. Aims: This paper reports findings from a descriptive study exploring nurse educators', clinical coaches' and nurse specialists' perceptions of factors associated with using EBP. Methods: Data was collected from a senior group of nurses working in a tertiary health care network in Victoria, Australia by employing a questionnaire that was distributed to a total of 435 people, of whom 135 responded. Data Analysis:Descriptive statistics for each questionnaire item were determined using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 17). Thematic analysis was performed for the qualitative part of the questionnaire. Results Findings revealed that organisational support, sufficient resources, and access to continuing education were perceived as factors promoting acceptance of EBP. Barriers to such acceptance in health care settings were identified as lack of knowledge and skills, poor time allowance, limited support, and insufficient resources. Conclusion: The reported findings create evidence-based information for organisational strategic planning. This paper aims to elucidate the current status of nursing in Southern Jordan, and to identify strategies that would enable improvement in nursing within that region. A qualitative study using key informant focussed interviews was conducted in the south of Jordan during the first half of 2010. Purposeful sampling was used until saturation of the data occurred. This required involvement of eight informants in the study, drawn from various health institutions in the southern region. Major issues that affect the nursing profession in the region were identified through thematic analysis. Themes emerging included cultural issues, geographic isolation, sustainability and turnover of professional nurses, continuing professional development, and strategies for improvement. Future action to improve the status and position of the nursing profession is warranted in this region. Enhancing general conditions of employment may serve to attract and retain nursing staff. Incentives for them to live and practice in southern Jordan are needed. Nurses from the local community should be encouraged to pursue postgraduate study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) with cancer are being disadvantaged within the present health care system. Some of the factors identified as leading to this disadvantage include medical issues specific to AYAs with cancer, delay in diagnosis, fragmented services, lack of access to clinical trials and psychosocial life stage issues. Objective: A major study investigated the experience that accompanies the stages of diagnosis, treatment, dying and death of an AYA from the perspective of family members. This paper discusses the major theme of the reality of hospitalisation. Methods: Narrative inquiry was the methodology for this study. The participants were a self-selected purposeful sample of 26 family members. Open-ended interviews were conducted to obtain a story of the experience of having an AYA family member live with and die of cancer. A meta-narrative of the family member's experience was developed by NVivo8. Results: In amongst the mass of data this study produced, a major theme to emerge was the experience 'of the reality of hospitalisation'. Within this theme issues regarding: The place of treatment; the hospital experience; not fitting in; and, confronting illness and death were revealed. Conclusion: While on the whole the cancer was treated with state of the art medicine, the experiences of the hospitalisation repeated consistently throughout this narrative reveals a failure to meet the higher order needs specific to adolescents and young adults and their families As a result this cohort were exposed to a landscape which did not facilitate a therapeutic experience, as well as would be expected for children and older adults. Indigenous nurses have the potential to improve access to health services for Indigenous people by ensuring that services are culturally safe and respectful of Indigenous peoples' needs. Therefore, developing a well-educated Indigenous nursing workforce is one way to improve the poor health outcomes of Indigenous Australians. A mixed methods study was undertaken to determine the current rates of enrollment, progression and completion of Indigenous nursing students in Australia and to explore student and staff perceptions of barriers to completion and strategies for success. The results indicate that the national average completion rates are 36.3% for Indigenous nursing students and 64.6% for non-Indigenous nursing students - an average difference of 28.3%. Indigenous nursing students and academics identified barriers to completion, which were similar to those identified in previous research. Success strategies, however, revealed the importance of individual student characteristics; academics' knowledge, awareness, and understanding; relationships, connections, and partnerships; institutional structures, systems, and processes; and, family and community knowledge, awareness, and understanding. Aim: To assess the feasibility and the effects of a multi-component education toolkit that used the Aged Care Funding Instrument behaviour (ACFI-BEH) scores to trigger care planning for older people experiencing behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Method: Forty-six older people and 209 staff and managers from five Sydney metropolitan residential aged care (RAC) facilities participated in this pre-post intervention pilot study. Results: The face validity and accessibility/acceptability of the toolkit was established, but potential utility of the ACFI-BEH in informing care planning was proven to be negligible. The ACFI-informed education toolkit did not lead to statistically significant improvements in care planning practice or reduce the severity/frequency of the targetted BPSD. Care plan quality remained low post intervention, with between 31% (N = 12/39) and 65% (N = 13/20) of care plans not addressing the persons' BPSD, nor utilising the ACFI information in relation to BPSD. Conclusion: This study has underscored the problems associated with current care planning practice in RAC settings and the need for developing strategies to ensure quality and safe care through individualised care planning practices. Foster carers have a significant responsibility in caring for vulnerable children. In order to support and facilitate foster carers it is important to understand how they perceive and fulfil this responsibility. A qualitative story-telling study, informed by feminist perspectives, was used to conduct in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 20 women providing long-term foster care in Australia. Thematic analysis revealed these women characterised themselves as mothers, rather than paid carers, to the long-term foster children in their care. Using this maternal self-perception as the starting point, this paper reveals some of the challenges and difficulties participants encountered when mothering within the confines of the child protection system. Implications for nursing practice are discussed. These implications focus on ways that nurses can effectively support foster carers, thus optimising the health and well-being of the vulnerable children in their care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the evaluation of the Transition Care Cognitive Assessment and Management Pilot (TC CAMP) at a residential care facility in Victoria, Australia. Transition care aims to provide a goal-oriented time-limited service to older people at the conclusion of an episode of hospital care. The TC CAMP was established to specifically meet the needs of people with cognitive impairment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of the TC CAMP. The evaluation sought to explore the perceptions ofstaffandfamily carers, and outcomes for the person with dementia. Methods consisted of file audits, focus groups and individual interviews with nursing staff and carers. This evaluation found that it was possible to provide appropriate transition care to people with cognitive impair-ment who exhibited behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. The TC CAMP achieved length of stay and readmission rates that were comparable with transition care for cognitively intact people. The role of the Clinical Nurse Consultant was highly valued by staffand families involved in TC CAMP. The findings from TC CAMP suggest a suit-able environment, availability of trained and resourced nursing and clinical staff and clear roles and expectations for all stakeholders should be considered in implementation of this model of care. This paper reports on an aspect of a larger ethnographic study that sought to investigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on the practice of primary care nurses in Jordan. Nursing leadership and the style of management adopted by senior nursing and medical administrators at the Ministry of Heath were identified as factors impacting on the practice of the nurses and their capacity to raise community awareness and contribute to the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS. The study was undertaken in three rural and three urban primary health care centres (PHCC). Data collection included participant observation, key informant interviews, and document analysis. These data informed the development of descriptive ethnographic accounts that allowed for the subsequent identification of common and divergent themes reflective of factors recognized as influencing the practice of the nurse participants. This paper reports on an evaluation of an educational initiative that seeks to improve the diabetes health outcomes of a vulnerable group, Indigenous Australians residing in remote and rural New South Wales. In this context seven Aboriginal Health Workers (AHWs) and ten registered nurses (RNs) undertook an accredited Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) course. The aims of this study were to identify the beliefs, attitudes and experiences of this group concerning specialist diabetes training, strategies already used by managers and those that could be used to help consolidate the diabetes expertise of AHWs and RNs. The fi ndings indicate specialist diabetes training and constructive support is required if AHWs and RNs are to develop from a novice to an expert. This paper reports on one of the key findings from a recent descriptive phenomenological study on lived experience of 10 new graduate nurses (NGNs) in an intensive care unit (ICU) in a major acute care hospital. Interpersonal relationships experienced by NGNs in ICU give rise to diverse thoughts, perceptions and feelings that may have significant impact on their professional development, job satisfaction and retention. The researcher conducted in-depth, semi-structured audiotaped interviews to collect the data. Interaction with others as key theme and related subthemes: interaction with patients; interaction with other members of the ICU team; who is approachable; and feedback emerged. The NGNs' perception of their ability to interact with others, as part of their professional development, is influenced by both (i) how they see themselves and (ii) how they perceive that others see them. Background: Over the last decade several innovative approaches to enhance students' transition to graduate nurse year have been implemented or piloted. This paper describes a study that investigated how the social practices of clinical partnership placement model underpin workplace learning for undergraduate students as they transitioned to graduate. Methods: A mixed method approach was utilized comprising individual interviews with students, observation of clinical workplaces across six different areas of nursing practice, student surveys of the clinical learning environment and participant workshops. Results: Three themes were identified that influenced participants' preparedness for work and enhanced the transition into the workplace: 'organizational familiarity', 'continuity' and 'social participation'. Conclusion: A clinical partnership model offers a degree of work readiness for novices when commencing their professional practice role. This paper is a report of a study to examine the influence of demographic, learning behavior and learning performance variables on learning outcomes of baccalaureate nursing students within a blended learning environment. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using the self-structured demographic questionnaire, case analysis attitude scale (CAAS), the case analysis self-evaluation scales (CASES), the metacognition scale (MS) and blended learning satisfaction scale (BLSS) to measure learning outcomes after the blended learning course. A total of 99 senior undergraduate nursing students currently studying at a public nursing college in Taiwan were eligible to participate in the study in 2008. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression. Univariate analysis showed significant associations between frequency of online dialogues, time spent on the internet, CAAS, and MS and scores on the ethical course. However, frequency of online dialogues, time spent on the internet, and the CAAS were significantly independent predictors for scores on the ethical course in the final model of multivariate analysis. The final model of the data analysis could account for 78% variances scores of ethical course (R2 = 0.78 and adjusted R2 = 0.77). It can be concluded from this study that frequency of online dialogue, time spent on internet, and the CAAS score are all useful predictors for learning outcome. In addition, blended learning was found to have contributed to learners' learning outcome by facilitating their metacognitive development and self-regulatory development. In blended learning courses, students have more responsibilities placed upon them than in traditional face-to-face learning environments. The first step of constructing a working blended learning model is to develop student-oriented teaching pedagogies that include face-to-face and online instruction, rather than just focusing on the provision of technical skills. Men and women who use illicit drugs have a heavy reliance on health care in emergency departments and acute care wards. Nurses' care however, is known to be constrained by inadequate drug education and policy and practice standards. This paper describes an additional constraint on care, namely, patients' behaviour. The findings are part of a broader mixed-methods study of nurses' therapeutic attitude to this patient group. The themes of violence, manipulation and irresponsibility emerged from the data analysis of written reports provided by a sub-sample (N = 311) of the main study sample. Recommendations are made for assisting nurses to reconceptualise their role with this patient group, and importantly, for an increase in violence management education and organisational role support, safety and security measures. Finally, further research in the field is recommended so that a comprehensive analysis of the difficulties faced by nurses and patients can be made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The key driver for this study arose from two serious untoward incidents that occurred in a large district general hospital in the United Kingdom. Following investigation of both these events the Director of Nursing in post at that time believed that poor organisation and delivery of care may have been a contributory factor. This paper reports the findings on one phase of a multi-phase study and focuses upon the perceptions and experiences of the hospital staff around the organisation and delivery of patient-centred acute nursing care. Although we saw little evidence of multi-disciplinary approaches to care, it was evident that the issue which had the biggest impact upon both the organisation and delivery of care was staffing levels. The concept and definition of pastoral care in aged care remains ambiguous. This paper reports on the defining characteristics and meaning of pastoral care from the perspective of older recipients, their family members and pastoral care workers. Using a qualitative descriptive approach semistructured in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 pastoral care workers and 11 older people. Transcribed data were analysed using NVivo software and coded for emerging themes. The defining characteristics of pastoral care that emerged from analysis of transcribed interviews were: a trusting relationship, spiritual support, emotional support and practical support. Findings also portray the role of the pastoral care worker as spiritual guide, confidante, and emotional and practical supporter acting within a trusting relationship. Aims and objectives: This paper reports a study aimed at exploring the nursing practices associated with the administration of pro re nata (PRN) postoperative analgesia to children, and at gaining a preliminary understanding of the decisions that nurses make about this important intervention. Background: Nurses are responsible for assessing and administering the appropriate medication at the appropriate time to the child in pain. There was scant published research about the administration of postoperative PRN analgesia to children, or about the decision-making processes inherent in this aspect of clinical nursing care. Design: A sequential mixed methods explanatory study with two data collection phases -- quantitative followed by qualitative -- was conducted. Results: Nurses used multiple strategies to ascertain children's need for postoperative PRN analgesia, including reference to pain assessment tools, focussing on the behavioural cues of children, involving parents and children, and drawing upon personal and professional backgrounds and experience. Evaluation of the effectiveness of PRN postoperative analgesia was poorly communicated. Conclusions: Decision-making associated with the selection and administration of appropriate analgesia to children is complex. In-service education should be developed and offered to nurses working with children postoperatively to ensure the appropriate use of PRN pain relief. Relevance to clinical practice: Documentation surrounding this task is poor and needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency to ensure quality patient outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study's aim was two-fold: (1) to explore the experiences and perceptions of industry, academic, and research professionals concerning technologies used within aged care; and (2) to identify needs-led priorities for the future development and application of technologies within aged care. Global population ageing requires a recalibration of aged care policies, systems, and services to promote and support healthy ageing. It is expected that technology will play an important role in this regard. This study qualitatively assessed the landscape of technology use in aged care from the perspective of industry, academic, and research professionals. A purposefully designed cross-sectional survey collecting experiences, perspectives, and barriers about technology through open responses. Using convenience sampling, thirty-five participants completed an online survey between April and October 2020. A descriptive qualitative content analysis approach was used to analyse the written responses. Reporting of findings followed the EQUATOR's Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research checklist. Four themes were identified that characterised the use of technologies within aged care: (1) User Perceptions and Attitudes: wariness and reluctance to technology; (2) Systemic Issues within Aged Care: Under-resourced with opportunities for innovation; (3) Technology-Related Barriers: Equity, costs, privacy, integration, and interoperability and (4) Research Priorities: Co-design and integration of technology. As Artificial Intelligence and social robots are increasingly used in health and social care, it is imperative to explore the training needs of the workforce, factoring in their cultural background. Explore views on perceived training needs among professionals around the world and how these related to country cultures. Cross-sectional, descriptive, mixed-methods international online survey. Descriptive statistical analysis explored the ranking across countries and relationships with three Hofstede cultural dimensions. Thematic analysis was conducted on the open-ended text responses. A sample of N = 1284 participants from eighteen countries. Knowing the capabilities of the robots was ranked as the top training need across all participating countries and this was also reflected in the thematic analysis. Participants' culture, expressed through three Hofstede's dimensions, revealed statistically significant ranking differences. Future research should further explore other factors such as the level of digital maturity of the workplace. Training needs of health and social care staff to use robotics are fast growing and preparation should factor in patient safety and be based on the principles of person- and culture-centred care. There are a few screening tools to detect psychological symptoms among people with multiple chronic conditions (MCCs) in China. The aim of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of a translated version of the Emotional Thermometer (ET) tool. This cross-sectional study consisted of two phases: (1) translation and content validity testing; and (2) assessment of psychometric properties, including internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct validity. For the first phase, the authors used a forward-backward translation approach for the Chinese version of the instrument and tested its content validity with a panel of six experts. For the second phase, the data, including the ET tool and demographic characteristics were collected in a convenience sample of 197 Chinese people with MCCs recruited from a university hospital. The first 50 participants participated in the two-week retest. The Chinese version of the ET tool had satisfactory psychometric properties; content validity index (0.83), internal consistency (0.92), and ICC (0.93 to 0.98 [p < 0.01]). Principal component analysis showed that there was only one component with an eigenvalue greater than 1 (value = 3.80), with 76.67% of the variance responding. All items loaded significantly onto this factor and demonstrated strong loadings of > 0.70. The Chinese-version of the ET tool is psychometrically sound. It has the potential to be used as a screening tool for psychological symptoms in Chinese people with MCCs. Findings from testing the Chinese translation of the Emotional Thermometer indicate this could be a convenient and useful screening tool to detect psychological symptoms in patients with multiple chronic conditions. Purpose: This study aimed to measure learning gains during an ICT training intervention in first-year students completing a four-year undergraduate nursing degree. Methodology: This study adopted a quasi-experimental, one group pre-test and post-test design. The intervention effectiveness was measured using individual single-student normalised gains, g; class average normalised gain, 〈g〉; and average single-student normalised gain, g(ave). Results: In this study, the class average normalised gains, 〈g〉 ranged from 34.4% to 58.2%, and the average of single student normalised gains, g(ave) ranged from 32.4% to 50.7%. The overall class average normalised gain 〈g〉 was 44.8%, and the average of the single student normalised gain was 44.5%, with 68% of students having a normalised gain of 30% and above, indicating that the intervention was effective. Conclusion: Similar interventions and measurements are recommended to all health professional students during their first academic year to pave a foundation for ICT usage for academic purposes. Misconceptions about men in nursing may influence recruitment and retention, further perpetuating the gender diversity imbalance in the nursing workforce. Identifying misconceptions and implementing early intervention strategies to address these deep-rooted stereotypes remain challenging but is considered critical to support students who are commencing a nursing career. To develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of the 'Gender Misconceptions of meN in nursIng (GEMINI) Scale. Cross-sectional survey. Pre-registration nursing students enrolled in undergraduate nursing programmes across 16 nursing institutions in Australia were surveyed from July to September 2021. The 17-item self-report GEMINI Scale measured the gender misconceptions of men in nursing. Of the 1410 completed surveys, data from 683 (45%) women were used for exploratory factor analysis showing a one factor structure, while data from 727 men (47%) were used for confirmatory factor analysis of the 17-item GEMINI Scale, which showed a good model fit. The scale demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha of 0.892). Men were found to have higher gender misconceptions (p < 0.001) while respondents who: (a) identified nursing as their first career choice (p = 0.002); (b) were in their final year of programme enrolment (p = 0.016); and (c) engaged in health-related paid work (p = 0.002) had lower gender misconceptions. The GEMINI Scale is a robust, valid, reliable, and easy to administer tool to assess misconceptions about men in nursing, which may potentially influence academic performance and retention. Identifying and addressing specific elements of misconceptions could inform targeted strategies to support retention and decrease attrition among these students. Genderism harms nursing, as well as the men and women working in the profession. Recruitment and retention of men into nursing is needed to cultivate male role models and diversify the workforce, however this is impeded by negative portrayals in popular culture and misconceptions entrenched in society. Neurological conditions produce considerable disease burden. To describe quality of life in patients with neurological conditions and informal caregivers receiving postdischarge generic community neurological nursing services, and caregiver burden. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used with researchers administering the WHOQOL-BREF Australian Version questionnaire and Zarit Burden Interview. Most patients and caregivers rated quality of life as 'Good'. The patients' physical, psychological and environment domain scores, and caregivers' physical domain scores, were below norms. Half of the caregivers experienced burden and 42% had risk for depression. A heterogeneous group of patients with neurological conditions had considerable care and support needs for fundamental functioning postdischarge. Quality of life and caregiver burden measures highlight the impact of their circumstances on their health and wellbeing. Research is warranted to determine a comprehensive set of generic needs to guide integrated community nursing services for building patient and caregiver self-management capacity. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unprecedented levels of prolonged strain on healthcare systems and healthcare workers (HCWs) globally, with nurses at the forefront. Objectives: To describe types and prevalence of occupational disruptions and exposure to COVID-19, and their impacts on mental health, moral distress, coping strategies, and help-seeking behaviours of Australian nurses. Design: A cross-sectional online anonymous survey distributed amongst Australian HCWs between 27 August and 23 October 2020. Methods: Data was collected on demographics, workplace disruption, personal relationships, and mental health. Predictors of mental health impacts and coping strategies were identified through multivariate regression analyses. Results: 7845 complete responses were returned, of which 3082 (39.3%) were from nurses and 4763 (60.7%) were from all other professions ('other HCWs'). Occupational disruption was common, with nurses specifically reporting additional paid hours (p < 0.001). Nurses were exposed to, and infected with, COVID-19 more frequently than other HCWs (p < 0.001) and were more likely to report concerns around stigmatisation from the broader community (p < 0.001). Symptoms of mental illness (anxiety, depression, PTSD and burnout) were significantly more prevalent in nurses than other HCWs, despite both groups scoring high on resilience. Common predictors of mental health symptoms included exposure to COVID-19 and worsening of personal relationships. Nurses reported a variety of coping strategies and were more likely than other HCWs to increase alcohol consumption. Engagement with formal support services was low for both groups. Personal and professional predictors for coping strategy use were identified. Conclusions: Urgent action is needed to address staff shortages and burnout which have been exacerbated by COVID-19. A qualitative study was conducted in rural New South Wales, Australia, to understand the barriers to help-seeking among young rural men with emergent mental health problems. Participants who had real life experiences of these problems within their families were interviewed. Themes emerged from the data which explained some barriers to early intervention. Despite these barriers, families had developed skills in helping and in providing early mental health help to their sons. The findings of this study showed that a substantial burden on the emotional and social integrity of the family, combined with diminished psychological well-being, caused some parents to question how long they could cope before they reached 'the end of their strings'. This downward spiralling trajectory of mental health and well-being for both the young men and their families has implications for clinical practice. Current models of mental health service delivery do not adequately capture the early help-seeking dynamics of young rural men and their families. A more flexible approach is needed to identify and help the family and the young men, without the pre-requisite for a formal medical diagnosis. Academic writing skills are essential to the successful completion of preregistration nursing programs, yet the development of such skills is a challenge for many nursing students, particularly those who speak English as a second language (ESL). It is vital to develop and evaluate strategies that can support academic writing skills for ESL nursing students. This qualitative study evaluated a four-day academic writing intervention strategy designed to support ESL first-year nursing students. Data from the program showed two major areas of difficulty for participants relating to academic writing: problems understanding course content in English, and problems expressing their understanding of that content in English. The participants noted a key benefit of this program was the provision of individual feedback. Background: Unplanned representation of patients with diabetes recently discharged from the emergency department or in-patient hospital settings is a common but complex problem world-wide. This study set out to examine the feasibility of a risk screening interview and whether component characteristics may be associated with the unplanned representation of patients with diabetes to a tertiary metropolitan hospital. Methods: A screening interview comprised of demographic, social and clinical characteristics was developed and piloted using a prospective cross-sectional survey design. A convenience sample of 55 patients was recruited and screened. Outcomes were the occurrence of unplanned representation to hospital within 28 or 90 days of hospital discharge from the index presentation. Results: The screening interview was shown to be broadly feasible and acceptable for use by staff and patients, with identified areas for modification. Seventeen participants (30.9%) experienced unplanned representation within 90 days of hospital discharge; for 13 participants (23.6%) this occurred within 28 days. Characteristics linked with unplanned representation to hospital were identified. Conclusions: Preliminary data indicated the feasibility of tool use and informed refinement for future testing of the ability of the screening interview to predict those patients with diabetes at high risk of unplanned representation to hospital, to enhance effective care planning. Impact statement: Patients with diabetes commonly present to Emergency Departments, and demonstration of the feasibility of a screening interview to determine those at elevated risk of unplanned representation is an important step towards effective management. Newly Graduated Nurses in different socio-cultural contexts confront dissimilar situations and influences on role transfer. It is important to understand how newly graduated nurses reconstruct their own professional concept of clinical nurses. This study aimed to explore how Taiwanese newly graduated nurses perceived their new role and the process through which they transition into the professional role. Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory guided the study's design and implementation. Purposive and theoretical sampling and the snowball technique were used to recruit 30 participants from 3 tertiary and 2 community hospitals in Taiwan. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim into a readable format. Initial, focused and theoretical coding was utilized for data analysis. The criteria of credibility, originality, resonance and usefulness guided assessment of the study's quality and ensured the trustworthiness of the study process. The process of role transition to become a nurse comprised four stages: hesitation, psychological preparation, development and appreciation. The hesitation stage was interpreted as a phase of passive learning. In the psychological preparation, newly graduate nurses began to take full work responsibility. The development stage saw them gain work confidence and, in the appreciation stage, they acquired a full picture of their roles. To bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practice and reduce the time new graduate nurses need for role adjustment contributes to an early stage of Hesitation rather than the Appreciation stage of role transition. Background: There is a growing amount of literature that links missed nursing care (MNC) to negative patient outcomes, reduced patient safety and poor quality of care. However, only few studies have investigated this phenomenon in long-term rehabilitation settings. Aim: To explore MNC occurrence, type, reasons and predictors in three rehabilitation units. Design: A cross-sectional study was performed between August and September 2017. Method: 95 registered nurses and nursing assistants completed section A (interventions missed) and section B (perceived reasons for MNC) of the MISSCARE Survey tool. Descriptive, bivariate and linear regression analyses were performed. Findings: The top missed elements were patient ambulation (score 2.4 out of 5, Standard Deviation [SD] 0.8), mouth care (2.3, SD 0.8) and participation to multidisciplinary meetings (2.3, SD 1.1). Lack of personnel was the most frequent reason reported for MNC with a score of 2.9 out of 4 (SD 0.9). At the linear regression analysis, advanced nursing education (β = 3.58, CI 95% 1.32–5.84) and inadequate handovers (β = 3.64, CI 95% 0.37–6.91) both increased the perception of MNC occurrence. Conclusion: MNC occurrence in rehabilitation settings appears to be lower than in other contexts; however, the most commonly missed elements are similar to those reported in other settings. As good strategies to detect the difference between expected nursing care and the one delivered to patients, advanced education and good quality handovers seem beneficial. Mindfulness-based psychoeducation program (MBPP) has been proposed as a new approach to improve the overall outcomes for individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. However, to date, limited studies have examined the participants' experiences of MBPP for schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) who underwent an 8-week MBPP with respect to their perception of the benefits and unusual challenges of mindfulness training and self-practices. Twenty-four (n = 24) individuals with SSDs were invited to participate in an 8-week MBPP. A total of eight participants were invited for semi-structured interview one week after the final class of MBPP. The semi-structured interview was conducted in Cantonese and data were transcribed by the first author. Of the eight participants, five participants had unusual experiences and three participants had a positive experience with MBPP. They were included to provide more candid understanding on the constituents of diverse experience towards MBPP. An interview guide was developed to understand the patients' perceptions of MBPP, the challenege in self-practising mindfulness, and the changes in how they coped with their illness during and after taking part in MBPP. Qualitative data from the semi-structured interview were recorded by a research assistant and the transcripts were proof-read by the participants to ensure accuracy. The Software NVivo 12 Pro was used to manage the qualitative data from the semi-structured interview. Thematic analysis was adopted to identify the major themes from the qualitative data. Five themes emerged: developing a state of mindfulness, empowering illness management, learning a new way to regulate emotion, encountering barriers in self-practising mindfulness and preference for bodily mindfulness. The findings provide comprehensive knowledge and deeper insights into treatment processes of mindfulness psychoeducation as an intervention for schizophrenia spectrum disorders. This study establishes a body of knowledge regarding people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders who received mindfulness psychoeducation intervention. The results suggest that patients can develop a new way to regulate emotion and manage their illness through mindfulness psychoeducation. The perceived negative experience of some patients also warrants closer attention in mindfulness practice, especially for individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Background: Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council prescribes midwifery accreditation standards that support students' development in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and cultural safety to be deemed practice ready. However, the impact of training programmes are not widely explored. Aim: This study aimed to assess the impact of a mandatory 8-week online subject focussed on the development of culturally safe practices among midwifery students. Methods: The Ganngaleh nga Yagaleh cultural safety assessment tool was used to collect online quantitative data from post graduate midwifery students at the commencement and completion of an online subject. Results: Through a purposive sample (n = 10) participant perceptions of culturally safe practices remained relatively unchanged, except for three items of the Ganngaleh nga Yagaleh cultural safety assessment tool. Discussion: Findings demonstrate that when post graduate midwifery students are exposed to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives of Australia's colonial history it impacts their sense of optimism, personal values and beliefs about the healthcare they will provide to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. However, midwifery students who self-identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, reported a decline in optimism when imagining a healthcare system free of racism. Conclusion: The subject did not impact on cultural safety scores. This may be due to prior learning of student midwives. Many nursing contexts have introduced bedside handover, where the person in care participates in the transfer of clinical information, with benefits for person, carers, and clinicians. This type of handover has been implemented across a number of mental health settings, but there is limited evidence regarding implementation approaches or of practice change. This study reports the development and evaluation of a co-produced education and support package. To evaluate changes in nurses' practice regarding bedside (person-side) handover following implementation of a structured education and support package. Multi-method design incorporating nurse surveys and chart audit. The survey and audit were conducted in 2019–2020 on two inpatient mental health units in a metropolitan health service immediately prior to, and 6 months after, implementation, with 70 survey responses and 52 files audited. Non-parametric tests assessed change, and text comments were reported. Significant improvements were observed in nurses' reports of confidence, the ability to maintain privacy, identified benefits for the person and in information transfer. In contrast, the chart audit identified no change in documentation of this practice. The implementation of a co-produced education and support package demonstrated positive practice change in engaging people receiving care in handover. This approach to handover provides increased opportunity for nurses to work in partnership with people receiving mental healthcare, facilitating collaborative person-centred care and shared decision making. Overuse of antibiotics and inappropriate prescribing has resulted in rapid development of antimicrobial resistance. Most antibiotics in the United Kingdom (71.4%) are prescribed in primary care by general practitioners, with about half prescribed for viral rather than bacterial illnesses. To explore antibiotic prescribing and factors which may influence maternal decision making to seek antibiotics for their young children. Data for children under five years were gathered using a mixed-methods case study approach. Quantitative general practice antibiotic prescribing data (n = 697 children) was statistically analysed and these results were further explored in six focus groups with mothers (n = 19) of children under five. The qualitative data was thematically analysed. Quantitative data identified nearly half of children received antibiotics. Children under one were prescribed the fewest antibiotics. Qualitative focus group data showed mothers trusted their general practitioner to provide expert care for their child and often wanted convenient and timely access to advice and reassurance rather than treatment. Antibiotics are frequently prescribed for young children in primary care. Healthcare professionals need to understand the maternal influences contributing to antibiotic use in children and consider strategies and interventions to reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions. The education given in cancer process will contribute to better cope with the problems that may be experienced and to improve self-management skills, thus to the improvement in the quality of life. This study aimed to determine the effect of video-assisted education on the quality of life of women with breast cancer who received chemotherapy treatment for the first time. The control group pre-test/post-test study design was used. The study was conducted with women who applied to Outpatient Chemotherapy Unit of a university hospital in Turkey between September 2016 and March 2017 and who received chemotherapy for the first time. The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaires namely EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-BR23 were used to obtain the data. In the education group patients in the fourth cycle of chemotherapy; a decrease in general well-being and a significant increase in dyspnoea, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite were observed. In control group patients in the fourth cycle of chemotherapy, a decrease in general well-being, physical and role functions and a significant increase in nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and fatigue. Breast symptoms and arm symptoms in the educational group patients decreased from the 1st to the 4th cycle. It has been determined that the application of visual material in patients with breast cancer in the education and counselling process is effective in improving the quality of life. Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic nurses and midwives are under-represented in higher and managerial roles. This study explored the presence and nature of career progression delays for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic nurses and midwives and investigated where the barriers to progression were. A secondary analysis of data from a wider cross-sectional survey investigating workplace experiences, burnout and patient safety in nurses and midwives. 538 nurses and midwives were recruited from four UK hospitals between February and March 2017. A career progression delay was viewed as being present if Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic nurses and midwives had spent longer on the entry level nursing grade and less time on higher grades in the previous 10 years. The analysis included items pertaining to: receipt of professional training, perceived managerial support for progression, likelihood of submitting applications and application success rates. Data were analysed using linear regression, odds ratios and t-tests. Results were reported using the STROBE Checklist. Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic nurses and midwives (n = 104; 19.4%) had spent more months working at the entry-level grade (M = 75.75, SD = 44.90) than White nurses and midwives (n = 428; 79.7%; M = 41.85, SD = 44.02, p < 0.001) and fewer months at higher grades (M = 15.29, SD = 30.94 v 29.33, SD = 39.78, p = 0.006 at Band 6; M = 6.54, SD = 22.59 v M = 19.68, SD = 37.83, p = 0.001 at Band 7) over the previous 10 years. Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic nurses and midwives were less likely to have received professional training in the previous year (N = 53; 53.0% v N = 274; 66.0%, p = 0.015) and had to apply for significantly more posts than White nurses and midwives before gaining their first post on their current band (M = 1.22, SD = 1.51 v M = 0.81, SD = 1.55, p = 0.026). Interventions are needed to improve racial equality regarding career progression in nurses and midwives. Increasing access to professional training and reducing discriminatory practice in job recruitment procedures may be beneficial. Background: Nurse Practitioners are identified as the ideal conduit to transform healthcare delivery internationally. Healthcare transformation requires the application of leadership and research skills. Current literature has limited information on NPs as leaders or researchers in the nursing profession. Objectives: Determine if Nurse Practitioners identify themselves as leaders in nursing. Identify the leadership and research activities and influencing characteristics of Nurse Practitioners in Ireland and Australia. Establish similarities in leadership and research activities between Nurse Practitioners in Ireland and Australia. To identify if there is a relationship between leadership and research activities. Design: A quantitative electronic survey. Methods: A survey instrument was developed by combining two previously validated instruments. Nurse Practitioners in Ireland or Australia that had practiced within the last five years, and members of the respective professional association were included. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the findings and explore relationships in the data. Results: 14% (n = 96) of Nurse Practitioners responded to the survey. Nurse Practitioners in Ireland and Australia identified themselves as leaders of the nursing profession. Nurse Practitioners work practices, leadership and research activities are similar in Ireland and Australia. The majority (n = 55, 57%), of participants reported being research active. There was an association between perceived leadership and research activities among participants. Conclusion: Nurse Practitioners in both Ireland and Australia identify themselves as leaders of the nursing profession. There is no difference in reported work practices, leadership or research activities of Nurse Practitioners in both Ireland and Australia. There is an association between perceived leadership and research activity. Background: Little is known about the personal, professional and workplace factors that influence evidence-based practice for forensic mental health nurses. Aim: This study describes the sources of practice knowledge for forensic mental health nurses, and the factors that influence the implementation of evidence-based practice. Design: This research study utilised a cross sectional survey design. Methods: All nurses (n = 244) working in one forensic mental health in-patient facility were sent an electronic invitation to complete the Developing Evidence Based Practice Questionnaire. Data was analysed to calculate descriptive statistics. Findings: Fifty-three respondents completed the survey. Respondents reported using experiential knowledge and locally derived sources of information more frequently than research-based evidence to inform their practice. Respondents reported being least skilled at finding, reviewing and using research evidence to change practice. The most frequently rated barriers to evidence-based practice were having insufficient time and resources to both finding and reviewing information and to implement changes in practice. Conclusions: Forensic mental health nurses tend to express a bias towards valuing social or qualitative sources of information to inform practice. Exploring the relationships between individual and organisational factors in the context of forensic mental health is recommended in order to gain further insights into the translation of evidence into practice for forensic mental health nurses. Impact statement: Unique contextual aspects of the forensic mental health environment may influence the implementation of evidence-based practice. Background: Post deinstitutionalisation, mental health mainstreaming has led to substantial increases in presentations to Emergency Departments (EDs). The assessment process requires the ED triage nurse to undertake a rapid client assessment, assign a clinically appropriate triage score, and then refer the client to a mental health clinician. The initial assessment is important, and a number of factors influence the process of triage, referral and response including an understanding of mental health presentation acuity. Aim: To understand the factors that influence the ED triage assessment, referral and clinical response of clients with a mental illness. Methods: An ethnographic methodology underpinned the research design. ED triage nurses and mental health triage nurses who worked in a regional hospital provided insights through interviews and observations. The study was also informed by institutional policies and procedures regarding triage. Transcribed in-depth interviews, field notes and memos were analysed using an inductive thematic process. Findings: Mental health triage nurses and ED triage nurses concur that triage is an important part of the assessing process for a person who presents to the ED with a mental health problem. Timely and clinically accurate assessment, followed by referral and response is strongly influenced by the user knowledge of the mental health triage scale, and comprehension of mental health acuity. The conflicting understandings between the two professional nursing groups, called professionally cultured orientations, further impact this process. Conclusion: Professionally cultured orientation to mental health triage and acuity comprehension influence the process of emergency mental health triage and therefore may affect optimal client outcomes. Background: Although bedrail use may increase the risk of accidents among patients, bedrails are still extensively used in healthcare facilities. Therefore, the field calls for a review of bedrail use in practice. Objective: This report examined the prevalence and implications of bedrail use in rehabilitation facilities in Hong Kong. The findings are compared with the current state of bedrail use worldwide. Design and methods: This work is a cross-sectional, observational study. A secondary analysis was conducted on the database of a prospective trial. Bilateral bedrail use was observed in two Hong Kong rehabilitation hospitals. Logistic regression was performed to examine the factors associated with bedrail use. Results: A total of 3,384 restraint observations were made. The bedrail rate was 31.34%, which revealed that bedrail use was the second most commonly used physical restraint. The fall history (OR: 2.84), cognitive impairment (OR: 0.91) and functional dependency (OR: 0.79) of patients were significant predictors of bedrail use, p <.05. Conclusion: This study examines bedrail prevalence through direct observation, which is the preferred method for examining bedrail use in practice. We found that actual bedrail use is higher than the numbers reported in previous studies in Hong Kong. In addition, our research reveals that bedrails are commonly used for vulnerable patients. This finding highlights the need to change nurses' beliefs on bedrail use through education. The management of these health facilities should also aim to create an institutional environment that promotes the reduction of bedrail use. Implementation strategies on restraint reduction should also fit the culture of the organisation and local nursing practices, as well as the staff's values. Background: Chronic pain is a complex condition frequently encountered in nursing practice, resulting in negative multidimensional effects on the individual and healthcare system. Increasingly, people with chronic pain are turning to Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) to manage their pain. Objectives: To explore the relationship between healthcare access, unmet healthcare needs, and practitioner-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine use in adults with chronic pain. Design: A secondary analysis of 1688 individuals ≥18 years old self-reporting chronic pain from Cycle 9 of the Canadian National Population Health Survey. Methods: Multivariate logistic regression and descriptive statistics. Results: When controlling for demographics and health status indicators, the presence of unmet healthcare needs was found to predict CAM use (p < 0.001; OR 2.02; CI [1.45, 2.81]), along with sex, education, income, employment, and restriction of activities. Conclusion: People may be using CAM due to shortcomings of the conventional healthcare system, with implications for policymakers and healthcare professions to develop more integrative strategies to improve chronic pain management. Background: Violence against women maintains its importance. Nursing and midwifery students should be able to identify symptoms of violence against women. Healthcare providers have received insufficient education, either before or after graduation, for identifying violence cases and for dealing with interfamilial violence against women. Aims: This study is conducted to identify nursing and midwifery students' ability to recognise symptoms of violence against women. Methods: This cross-sectional study included nursing and midwifery students attending the Ege University, School of Nursing, the Celal Bayar University, Health School of Higher Education and Health School of Izmir Atatürk (N = 557). The convenience sampling method was used. There were 114 students who declined to participate in this study as they did not want to answer questions about violence (n = 443). Results: It was determined that 94.6% of the students were knowledgeable about violence against women. The scores obtained by students from the physical symptom sub-dimension were 8.35 ± 1.65 and from the emotional symptom sub-dimension were 11.97 ± 2.19. The total scores obtained from the scale were 20.32 ± 3.14. A statistically significant difference was found between students' age, gender, nursing or midwifery section, being subjected to violence, receiving violence awareness training and reporting violence in the sub-dimensions and total scores of the scale (p < 0.05). Impact Statement: Having knowledge and self-confidence increased students' awareness in identifying the symptoms of violence. Conclusion: The participant's limited ability to identify symptoms of violence is thought to result from inadequate emphasis on violence issues in the curricula. Objectives: Fatigue is very common in patients with breast cancer. Developing appropriate measurement tools to assess fatigue is critical. The aim of this study is to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-10 (MFI-10) in patients with breast cancer. Design: A cross-sectional validation study. Methods: The MFI-10 was translated in Chinese using a combination of expert assessment and cross-cultural adaptations. The Chinese version of MFI-10 was then administered to 402 patients with breast cancer from three affiliated hospitals. Results: Principal component analysis extracted three factors that explained 78.197% of the total variance. The internal consistency reliability coefficient of MFI-10 scale was 0.864. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis showed a good fit to data (χ2 = 51.638, df = 35, NFI = 0.943, CFI = 0.981, AGFI = 0.924, TLI = 0.975 and RMSEA = 0.049), which represents good construct validity. Conclusions: The MFI-10 is a reliable and valid tool to measure fatigue in Chinese patients with breast cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
