The article presents a study on photosensitivity due to ambroxol and ultraviolet B (UVB) in Japan. The study reveals that photosensitivity due to ambroxol is not common and only one case has been reported in the Japanese literature although ambroxol is widely used for upper respiratory disease. It states that drug-induced photosensitivity is commonly induced by ultraviolet A (UVA) and UVB photosensitivity due to a drug is rare.

A 42-year-old woman had recurrent dermatitis on the hands, arms, face and trunk for 5 years. She was allergic to chrysanthemum, with positive patch tests. She also had contact urticaria to chrysanthemum, with a wheal-and-flare reaction 15 mm after application of chrysanthemum juice to a scratch test site. This was not seen in control subjects. The co-existance of allergic contact dermatitis and contact urticaria from chrysanthemum might play a role in the development of dermatitis. especially severe chronic dermatitis of her hands. 2 patients with leg ulcers got worse after the application of a compound mixture of sugar and povidone-iodine (sugar/Pl compound). Because they had been suffering from stasis dermatitis, symptoms of contact dermatitis were ambiguous. Patch tests showed positive reactions to 10% povidone-iodine in water and 5% potassium iodide in water, with no response to sugar. They were also tested with sugar/Pl compound, containing 3% povidone-iodine, resulting in another positive reaction. They improved alter the application of sugar/Pl compound was discontinued. Sodium cromoglycate (SCG) is a widely used drug in the prophylaxis and treatment of allergic conditions such as bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis and atopic dermatitis. Adverse reactions of SCG so far reported include dermatitis, gastroenteritis, myositis and pulmonary allergic granulomatosis. SCG eyedrops have been used in the treatment of vernal keratoconjunctivitis and allergic conjunctivitis. The only side-effect of SCG eyedrops that has ever been reported is a transient irritation. Because a placebo which contained only preservatives caused irritation as frequently as SCG eyedrops, it has not been attributed to SCG but to the preservatives.
