Volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions are becoming an increasingly significant issue because of the increasing demand for bitumen in road engineering. This study attempted to develop a type of fume-suppressed bitumen with good comprehensive performance. Initially, 1, 2, and 3% organic montmorillonite and 2, 3, and 4% waxy warm-mix agents were utilised to modify bitumen. Subsequently, the fume suppression and physical and construction performances of the modified bitumen were evaluated, and the modified bitumen with the best comprehensive performance was determined. On this basis, constant- and variable-temperature heating modes were designed to verify the fuel suppression performance of the modified bitumen thoroughly. Finally, the modification mechanism of modified bitumen was investigated via atomic force microscopy. The results indicate that the modifier had the greatest impact on the ductility of the modified bitumen in terms of its physical performance. Although waxy warm mixed agents increase VOC emissions, organic montmorillonite can inhibit this effect. The modified bitumen, composed of 2% organic montmorillonite and 2% waxy warm mix agent, has the best comprehensive performance, with a 40.6% emission reduction rate under constant temperature heating mode and 46.4–28% range from 200 ℃ to 120 ℃ under another mode. The waxy warm mix agents and organic montmorillonite-modified bitumen developed into continuous and dispersed phase systems, respectively, leading to variations in the modified bitumen's physical performance and VOC emission capacity. In contrast, the composite-modified bitumen exhibited a two-phase structure with the surface morphology of an 'egg tray'. This unique structure enhances the heating surface area and facilitates heat conduction, improving the bitumen performance during construction. Earthen plasters have been widely used in historical buildings such as grottoes, which have high historical, artistic, scientific, social, and cultural values. In order to study the influence of the material composition of plasters on its physical performance, a total of seven different types of earthen plaster specimens were made using Dengban clay and six admixtures (quartz sand, two types of vegetal fibers, and three types of hydraulic limes), and the surface water absorption properties, hygrothermal properties, surface strength (surface hardness, surface cohesion, and surface impact resistance), color difference, and radial shrinkage of all plasters were systematically investigated and compared. The results show that the addition of sand, vegetal fibers, and hydraulic limes all changed the surface water absorption, thermal conductivity, and water vapor permeability of plaster, and inhibit the radial shrinkage during the curing process. Compared to the other admixtures, sand had the least effect on the overall performance of plasters. Both types of vegetal fibers can greatly improve the impact resistance of plaster surface, but due to the formation of microcracks on the surface of the plaster with wheat straw fibers, its water absorption is much higher than that of the plaster with hemp fibers. • Green cementitious materials were prepared by synergistically utilizing demolition waste and industrial waste. • The variation pattern between the macro-properties of geopolymer and initial constituent molar ratios was comprehensively summarized. • The strong linear correlations were observed between initial component molar ratios and both flowability and compressive strength. Recycling waste materials for geopolymer synthesis offers a sustainable solution for reducing environmental impact from construction. In this study, the recycled concrete fine powder (RCFP) and granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) were used to synthesize geopolymers, and the effects on physical performance, compressive strength, and microstructure were investigated. Building upon the existing results, the quantitative relationships between initial constituent molar ratios (Si/Al, Na/Al, and Si/Ca) and macro-properties of the geopolymers were explored and the influence mechanisms were analyzed. The findings demonstrate that the incorporation of GBFS significantly reduced setting time and increased compressive strength. Additionally, the blending of GBFS effectively enhanced the geopolymerization degree and generated more mixed gelling products of C-(A)-S-H, N-A-S-H and (C, N)-A-S-H, resulting in a refined internal structure of the matrix. The results revealed that the relationships between initial constituent molar ratios and macro-properties were not straightforward and involved multiple models. The initial and final setting times showed complex non-linear correlations with initial component molar ratios, while strong linear correlations were observed between initial component molar ratios and both flowability and compressive strength. A non-linear relationship was found between the setting time and fluidity. The outcomes contribute to the understanding of the interplay between composition, property, and structure in geopolymer materials and provide guidance for the composition design of geopolymers. • An innovative building material, coral sand-based PCM concrete composite is successfully prepared. • Cement encapsulation can effectively solve the problem of PCMs leakage. • The thermal property, microstructure and chemical compatibility of the coral sand-based PCM composites were studied. • The optimized replacement rate for PCM concrete composites was 50%. • The thermal regulation capacity of coral sand-based PCM concrete composites was verified through small-scale model tests. To promote the application of phase change materials (PCMs) in the field of green building, this research prepared coral sand-based PCM composites by vacuum adsorption method with coral sand as the porous carrier and polyethylene glycol 1000 as phase change material. The thermal and physical properties of the material, and its leakage characteristics after cement encapsulation were investigated through scanning electron microscope (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), x-ray powder diffractometer (XRD), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The DSC results indicated that the coral sand-PCM composites had a melting point and latent heat capacity of 28.55℃ and 48.57 J/g, respectively. TGA and thermal cycling test demonstrated that coral sand-based PCM composites had good stability in terms of their chemical structure, thermal degradation, and cycling reliability in latent thermal energy capacity properties. The coral sand-based PCM composites were later prepared as coral sand-based PCM concrete composites by replacing coarse aggregates with different proportions. And the compressive strength of the PCM concrete composites was tested. In addition, the thermal insulation properties of coral sand-based PCM concrete composites were verified through model tests. The results of model test showed that the maximum indoor temperature differences between the Oridinary-0 and CS-50 concrete rooms were 7.45℃ during heating and 2.61℃ during cooling. The strength of coral sand-based concrete still could meet the requirements according to the structural design code at a mass substitution ratio of 50%. The CS-50 composite concrete exhibited acceptable mechanical properties and was able to regulate indoor temperatures and reduce energy consumption in buildings. Thin-strand composite panels and subsequent mass timber beams were produced using thermally modified wood strands in a pressurized system. The effects of thermal modification (TM) temperature and dwell time on the mechanical, moisture, and decay performance of panels were studied. TM reduced moisture sorption and increased decay resistance. The thin-strand composites were evaluated in flexure and benchmarked against commercially available structural products. Moreover, the mass timber beams' out-of-plane bending was accurately predicted with traditionally used laminated beam theory. The study shows that TM, under controlled conditions, enables the production of high-performing wood-strand panels with improved dimensional stability and decay resistance. Thus, in this study, macroscopic and microscopic experiments are conducted to comprehensively explore the properties of MS–FLS with different MS, chloride (Cl−), and shell contents. The results of the macroscopic tests reveal that MS–FLS exhibits a fluidity of 160–229 mm, a volumetric water-absorption rate of 13.1 %–19.5 %, and an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 0.95–2.64 MPa. Further, the flow of bubbles is promoted as the fluidity and water-absorption rate change, thus accumulating the bubbles with relatively large pore sizes and causing an increase in the overall relative pore size. Although the durability is reduced to varying degrees via wet cycling, freeze–thaw cycling, sulfate (SO2 − 4) erosion, and long-term outdoor exposure, most of the UCS values can still satisfy the requirement for subgrade engineering applications. Moreover, the microscopic tests indicate that the pore size increases with the increasing MS content, whereas the pore-wall thickness, cement density, mechanical properties, and durability decrease. As the shell content increases, the UCS and durability decrease considerably owing to the smooth, surface-induced weak points and low water-absorption capacity of the shells; however, the UCS can still satisfy engineering requirements. Finally, the increased Cl− content can improve the SO2 − 4 resistance due to the generated Friedel's salt, which fills the micropores in cement-hydration products, and this facilitates strengthening. • SAP was synthesized using kaolin through inverse suspension polymerization. • New SAP reveals satisfactory physical and mechanical performances. • Use of kaolin enhanced the rigid network of new SAP while reducing its cost. • The increase in the acrylamide content led to a greater final equilibrium absorbency rate of new SAP. The water absorption of ionic SAP in cement-based materials is small. Therefore, this study synthesized a low-grade kaolin-enhanced SAP through inverse suspension polymerization, and its performances in deionized water, the saturated Ca(OH) 2 solution and the supernatant of the cement slurry were investigated. The results indicate that the synthesized SAP revealed a spherical shape with a uniform particle size, showing well dispersion after water saturation. In addition, the use of low-grade kaolin could be beneficial concerning the absorbency of SAP especially using 7.5% low-grade kaolin, as reflected by the consistency results, but its absorbency is sensitive to water temperatures and environmental relative humidity. Besides, compounding inorganic materials into SAP can reduce the cost of SAP synthesis and provide cost efficiency. Finally, the growth of the acrylamide content could deteriorate the absorbency of SAP, but their final equilibrium absorbency could increase, and the absorbency of the synthesized SAP were similar in the media of the saturated Ca(OH) 2 solution and the supernatant of cement slurry. • A laboratory characterization of fully recycled asphalt concretes for utility cuts and potholes repairs is presented. • Two different reclaimed asphalt pavements stockpiles were analysed and characterized. • Chemical additives were used in substitution of virgin bitumen for the production of fully recycled hot asphalt concretes. • The use of chemical additives does no reduce the workability of the fully recycled hot mixtures. • The experimental mixtures performed similar to traditional asphalt concretes. The reuse of recycled materials, such as Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP), is one of the most widespread and sustainable alternatives to continuous exploitation of raw materials in the road pavements sector. Over the years, numerous studies have been conducted on the use of RAP in the production of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMAs) in different percentages and with several bituminous binders and additives. At the same time, little attention was paid to the possibility of using this recycled material as HMA for small road maintenance interventions. Cold Mix Asphalt (CMA) is still the material widely adopted for potholes repairs and patch pavement rehabilitations, despite its lower performance if compared to HMA. The idea developed in the present research is the possibility of using the hot recycling technology for the production of patch asphalt for potholes and utility cuts repairs. In particular, the focus of the study was the development of an HMA produced with 100% RAP and without the addition of bituminous binders. Thus, three different chemical additives were tested for the experimental recycled HMAs. Promising results have been obtained in the laboratory characterization, showing that the recycled materials can have physical and mechanical performances comparable to HMA produced with virgin aggregates and bitumen. Utilizing Recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) in bituminous mixes contains several environmental and economic benefits however the poor physical properties of RCA in some cases results in inferior mix properties as compared to mixtures comprised of virgin aggregates. Due to these drawbacks, field utilization of RCA in bituminous mixes is very low. This paper presents a detailed review associated with different stages included in the utilization of RCA in bituminous mixes. The paper discusses different stages and treatment methods used to produce RCA. It also talks about RCA's conventional characteristics i.e. physical and chemical and microscopic characteristics and how they affect the performance of RCA incorporated bituminous mix in terms of stability, indirect tensile strength, rutting, fatigue, resilient modulus, moisture damage potential, and low-temperature performance with the help of reviewing available literature. Waste tires are produced in large quantities and cause serious pollution. Moreover, it is challenging to dispose of waste tires safely. Pyrolysis treatment is an economic, environmentally friendly, and high-recovery-efficiency solution, but the recycling applications of pyrolysis products, such as pyrolysis carbon black (TPCB) and pyrolysis oil (TPO), have not been widely studied. In this study, TPO and TPCB were applied to composite-modify 70# base bitumen. The modification mechanism of TPO/TPCB-modified bitumen (TPO/TPCB-MB) was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), gel-permeation chromatography (GPC), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The physical performance and rheological performance of the bitumen with and without TPO/TPCB were investigated to determine the design and preparation parameters of TPO/TPCB-MB and investigate TPO/TPCB's effects on the technical performance of bitumen. In addition, the road performance of TPO/TPCB-MB concrete was extensively studied. In the results, no large agglomeration phenomenon was observed between the TPCB particles. Furthermore, the molecular weight of TPO was much lower than that of 70# bitumen, indicating that TPO can increase the light components of bitumen. TPCB and TPO mixed with the bitumen in a physical manner, and the multi-layer spacing of TPCB remained basically unchanged. The TPO/TPCB was also shown to have good thermal and structural stability. TPO and TPCB, moreover, provided component balance and powder hardening effects in the TPO/TPCB-MB. No significant difference was observed between the technical performance of the 70# bitumen and the 0.9% TPO + 15% TPCB-MB. The water stability, low-temperature, and anti-fatigue performance of the TPO/TPCB-MB mixture was significantly better than that of the 70# bituminous mixture. Meanwhile, the high-temperature performance showed no obvious difference. Therefore, TPO was found to balance TPCB's oppositive effect on the performance of bitumen and its mixture. • Studied utilization of low-reactive copper mine tailings (MT) to produce green geopolymer bricks. • Slag as a supplementary cementitious material can enhance the geopolymerization kinetics. • Low-reactive copper MT together with slag can be used to manufacture green bricks satisfying ASTM requirements. To achieve sustainable construction and respond to the ever increasing demand for construction materials, including bricks, it is in an urgent need to use innovative technologies, like geopolymerization, to produce green and sustainable construction materials. Therefore, this study investigates the utilization of low-reactive copper mine tailings (MT) with slag (SG) as a supplemental cementitious material to produce green bricks based on the geopolymerization technology. To this end, the effects of several parameters including NaOH molarity (10 and 15 M), Na 2 SiO 3 /NaOH ratio (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3), slag (SG) content (0, 10, and 20 wt% of MT + SG), forming pressure (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 MPa), water-to-solid ratio (0.12, 0.14, and 0.16), and curing temperature (60, 75, 90, 105, and 120 ℃) on the physical and mechanical performance of geopolymer brick specimens are investigated through unconfined compression and water absorption tests. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses are conducted to understand the changes in microstructure and phase composition after geopolymerization. The results show that using only MT does not lead to a durable geopolymer product because of the low leaching of Si and Al species from the MT. Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a high-performance concrete that has gained prominence in recent years due to its high fluidity and cohesion characteristics. In this material, the use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) is necessary for the consolidation properties and durability requirements to be achieved. SCM obtained from waste or industrial by-products can improve SCC properties and reduce the environmental impact associated to Portland Cement (PC) production. In light of these facts, the present paper addressed the effects of high levels of mineral additions (metakaolin, rice husk ash and limestone filler) and hydrated-lime on the physical (ultrasonic pulse and capillary absorption), mechanical (compressive strength) and durability (carbonation resistance, chloride ion diffusion and electrical resistivity) properties of SCC. The results showed that metakaolin and rice husk ash increase the viscosity of SCC due to their larger specific surface area. The simultaneous incorporation of high content of mineral additions reduced the compressive strength of SCC. However, it was possible to obtain concretes with compressive strength between 22 and 46 MPa at 28 days and with adequate physical performance and durability. • The addition of Maleic anhydride grafted waste leather can greatly improve various properties of asphalt binder. • The storage stability of modified asphalt is greatly enhanced after grafting waste leather with Maleic anhydride. • Chemical reaction occurred between the grafting activated waste leather powder and base asphalt during modification process. The objective of this study is to seek a methodology to recycle the waste leather in an efficient and eco-friendly way. In this study, modified asphalts samples containing 9% and 12% waste leather powder (WL) and Maleic anhydride grafted waste leather (MAH-WL), as well as base asphalt sample, were prepared. In addition, these tests of penetration, softening point, ductility, DSR, MSCR, fluorescence microscope, FTIR and SEM were applied to investigate the conventional physical performance, high-temperature rheological characteristic and storage stability of asphalt samples. The results indicated that under the same content of waste leather powder, grafting activation could reduce the penetration of asphalt and greatly improve the softening point and the ductility. Furthermore, the high-temperature rheological characteristic of MAH-WLMA was improved compared with base asphalt and WLMA. The storage stability of modified asphalt was also greatly enhanced after grafting Maleic anhydride to waste leather. The result of FTIR manifested that chemical reaction was occurred between the grafting activated waste leather powder and base asphalt, while the modification of waste leather without grafting was merely a physical process. Overall, using grafting activated waste leather as a bio-modifier of asphalt is feasible and promising, while some limits do exist. To comprehensively master the modification mechanism and apply MAH-WLMA to practical projects, further experiments need to be conducted. Decreasing the viscosity of asphalt binder is a widely applied and successful mechanism to reduce the construction temperature of asphalt mixture. Depending on this case, the waste rubber and plastic are applied to produce low-temperature construction additives (LCAs), in an attempt to reduce the construction temperature of asphalt mixture. The LCAs modified asphalt (LCAs-MA) were manufactured with different dosage of LCAs at varied temperatures, and it is to determine the manufacturing parameters such as LCAs dosages and blending temperature of LCAs-MA. After this, viscosities of LCAs-MA with various contents of LCAs were tested to investigate the LCAs and its dosage effects in the construction temperature of asphalt mixture. In addition, the physical and rheological properties of asphalt binders were studied as well, which is used to assess the technical performance of LCAs-MA. The content of LCAs-1 and LCAs-2 in the LCAs-MA should be not less than 8.6%–10% and 11.5%−13% respectively. The changing tendency of physical and rheological performance of LCAs-MA indicates that a reduction in the high-temperature performance of LCAs-MA, and a dramatic increase in its low-temperature performance. The failure temperature of asphalt at a G*sinδ Value of 5000 kPa is reduced after addition of LCAs, indicating that LCAs can improve the fatigue crack resistance of asphalt. • B/A ratio affects the physical and mechanical properties of NHL2 and NHL3.5 mortars. • The influence of B/A is different according to the binder type. • 20% binder leads to a mortar of lower mechanical performance in both cases. • 25% binder seems to be the optimum percentage in the case of NHL2. • 30% binder seems to be the optimum percentage in the case of NHL3.5. Natural hydraulic lime (NHL) is a material which has received increased interest in the past decade as a binder for the production of mortars. The renewed interest of researchers and builders in natural hydraulic lime is attributed to its enhanced compatibility with many traditional materials, as well as the fact that it is an environmentally friendly material, especially in relation to modern cement. In the present study, two different types of natural hydraulic lime mortars are studied, using NHL2 and NHL3.5 as binder (in accordance to the new classification EN 459-1:2010) and the same river sand, while the influence of different binder to aggregate ratios on mortar characteristics is also investigated. Fresh mortar characteristics are examined immediately after mixing, while hardened mortar characteristics are evaluated at different mortar ages. Specifically, the mechanical performance of the mortars is evaluated through flexural and compressive strength tests, as well as the dynamic modulus of elasticity, which is estimated through ultrasound pulse velocity measurements. Physical performance of the mortars is investigated through the examination of the pore network structure characteristics, via mercury intrusion porosimetry measurements, and through the examination of hygric characteristics, via water absorption tests. The binder to aggregate ratio seems to play an important role in the development of the mechanical and physical characteristics of the mortars, while it influences mortar properties differently according to the type of the binder. The use of sheeting materials within the construction industry is becoming increasingly common as building materials and the way they are used evolves. Recently, magnesium-based construction boards have received more attention as alternatives for traditional sheeting materials. This is due to some of their enhanced properties, particularly fire resistance and lower embodied carbon. However, the lack of standardised documentation has caused concern regarding their composition, performance and long-term behaviour. This paper evaluates some of the test methods commonly used when assessing the performance of construction boards. A comparison between relatively novel magnesium-based boards and traditional boards is also conducted. Physical, mechanical and durability properties are investigated. Magnesium-based boards can provide relatively good bending strength values and water absorption behaviour which is comparable with other board types. Findings also demonstrate good performance for magnesium-based boards when exposed to soak-dry and freeze-thaw cycles. • Simultaneous use of SF and RM improves the mechanical properties of SCC. • Cement substituting showed to be proficient of improving the behaviour of SCC. • Using RM and LS were observed to be more cohesive mixes than mixes containing G. • Using Marble and SF indicates the best mechanical properties of SCC. Reducing waste materials content plays an important role in protecting the environment. Conversely, emitted gases from factories during the production of some industry materials, such as cement have harmful effects on the environment and human health. In this study, both fresh and hardened state properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC), containing waste materials, including red mud (RM) granite (G), limestone (LS) and marble (M) is investigated. RM is used as a partial replacement of cement at five different substituting contents: 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10% (in term of weight). Also, G, LS and M are used as fillers in different mixes, separately (100 kg/m3). To improve the properties of mixes, steel fibres (SF) are also added at volume percentages of 0%, 0.1% and 0.2%. A total of 37 mixes are produced, and slump, compressive and tensile strength, water absorption, electric resistivity, durability against sulfuric acid and reduction in compressive resistance after the sulfuric acid attack are measured. The obtained outcomes indicated that SF has a substantial influence on improving the rheological performance of SCC, particularly when 2.5% RM with G were used. Additionally, a slight improvement in the compressive strength after acid immersion was observed when 0.1% SF were used; however, there is no substantial difference between the compressive strength of SCC having 0.1% SF and those containing 0.2% SF, against sulfuric acid attack.
