The use of bio-based building materials is a sustainable opportunity to reduce the environmental footprint associated with the construction sector. The achievement of this objective is primely achieved through the valorisation of vegetable waste, resulting in a reduction in the use of primary source material and waste generation. Within the scope of this study, the focus is directed towards research concerning the thermal, acoustic, and fire behaviour properties of bio-based building materials. This study conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis encompassing all documents meeting these criteria within the Scopus database, spanning two decades, from 2003 to 2023. The comprehensive analysis covered a total of 1081 documents, which were analysed. This analysis furnishes insight into various facets, including the temporal evolution of publications, journals boasting the highest publication counts and impact, influential research areas, countries with substantial contributions and their collaborative patterns, noteworthy affiliations, prolific authors, and seminal documents, alongside recurrent keywords. The objective of this comprehensive study is to provide a detailed analysis of the documents published up to the present day, in order to identify research gaps and potential opportunities in this field, to assist new researchers interested in the subject. The analysis reveals that bio-based building materials have gained substantial attention over the past decade. With each passing year, the published documents have increased their impact and become more specific, underscoring the growing importance of this subject. This evolution has also fostered a broader network of researchers engaged in this field. However, it is noteworthy that the characterization of these materials focuses predominantly on their thermal properties, while research avenues related to acoustic and fire properties remain less explored and present opportunities for future investigation. • This study contributes to identify research gaps and potential opportunities in the field of bio-based building materials. • Studies in bio-based building materials have shown an annual growth of the 25% since 2014, being a topic on the rise. • France and China are the countries with the highest scientific publication on bio-based building materials. • Keywords play a crucial role in making visible the research within bio-based building materials. • "Thermal Conductivity" and "Thermal insulation" are the most repeated keywords in this field. Cross-laminated timber (CLT), developed in Europe for the utilization of low-grade wood, is an engineered wood product (EWP) with high carbon storage and low carbon emissions. CLT wooden houses have advantages such as reduction of greenhouse gases, shortening of construction period through precast and modular construction, improved of insulation performance and airtight performance, the realization of the high-rise wooden house. In this study, ply-laminate cross-laminated timber (ply-lam CLT) was prepared using domestic plywood as the core material of CLT, and the thermal properties and heat transfer performance of ply-lam CLT were analyzed. The thermal conductivities of the ply-lam CLT in the radial, tangential, and longitudinal directions were 0.104 W/(m K), 0.111 W/(m K), and 0.122 W/(m K), respectively. The results of the heat transfer analysis through ISO 10211 indicated that the ply-lam CLT walls had lower thermal bridges than wood frame structure walls. Moreover, the ply-lam CLT walls with exterior insulation had lower thermal bridges. In addition, the self-tapping screw (STS) joining method on all connections was able to maintain excellent insulation performance because of low thermal transmittance coefficient. Nowadays, energy dissipation of buildings has caused serious problems to the environment for leading to overuse of resources in China. To reduce energy consumption and protect the environment, shale that widely distributed in China and the waste, including both building waste and industrial waste are used as raw materials to manufacture fired hollow blocks with 29-row holes which ensure the insulation properties and reduction of weight. As samples, 365 mm × 248 mm × 249 mm rectangular fire hollow blocks with density of 850 kg/m 3 were produced to study the mechanical and thermal properties of this wall material. The results satisfied the relevant Chinese Standard, and the block has a high compressive strength and reliable insulation performance comparing with fired common brick or other hollow blocks. Because of the excellent self-insulation characteristics, the blocks could be used directly as wall materials without requiring the usage of special insulation measures in masonry structures, which mean that this new-type material could reduce the cost of housing construction and had broad application prospect in masonry structures. • Boron nitride-doped expandable graphite (EG) microcapsule (BN-PMEG) was prepared. • BN improves the thermal conductivity of microcapsule. • BN and EG form an expressway network for heat transfer. • High thermal conductivity BN -PMEG reduces the risk of combustion of natural rubber. The flammable feature limits the application of natural rubber in building fields. Although expandable graphite (EG) microcapsule has good compatibility with natural rubber (NR), the organic wall material of microcapsule has the disadvantage of low thermal conductivity and increases the risk of combustion of NR. In this study, EG microcapsule was prepared via in-situ polymerization (BN-PMEG) whilst its organic shell with high compatibility and thermal conductivity was developed by boron nitride (BN)-doped. The composite structure and thermal performances were analyzed via scanning electron microscope test (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). Following this, the cone calorimeter test, limiting oxygen index test, vertical burning test, time to ignition test, tensile strength and fracture test were used to describe the fire behavior and mechanical properties. The results indicate that the BN is embedded in the PMMA shell and the diameter of BN-PMEG is 20–50 μm. According to the mechanical property and thermal conductivity test, BN-PMEG have better compatibility with NR than expansible graphite and increases the thermal conductivity of NR composites. Abstract: Thermal properties of five screed specimens were evaluated by four different thermal analysis methods. Thermal conductivity results showed that samples with recycled glass aggregate had a substantially lower thermal conductivity compared with those of sand screeds. Variation of heat capacity between the glass and sand screed mixtures increased with elevated temperature to a significant extent; the glass screeds seemed to show the highest heat capacities at these increased levels. The 100% glass aggregate specimens exhibited a lower thermal expansion at higher temperatures showing a higher dimensional stability. From the results a model was created to assess some realistic scenarios which the screeds may be presented with. A comparison of the screeds over different temperature ranges was produced. Glass screeds were shown to save approximately three times the energy of conventional sand counterparts due to good thermal insulation. When compared, the 100% glass with rapid cementations provided the best possibility for financial savings. The study demonstrated that glass aggregate screeds could be used as a cost effective and environmentally friendly building material that superseded sand alternatives dramatically in thermal retention. Abstract: The objective of the present paper is to evaluate the thermal performance of diverse wood-based panels in small-scale test cells of 1m×1m×1m of internal volume. The thermal evaluations took place under the climatic conditions of Curitiba, Brazil (latitude 25.5°S, elevation 917m above sea level), which is characterized by a subtropical climate with high daily and annual amplitudes of the air temperature. The research comprised of the following steps: (1) heat flux measurements through each panel configuration; (2) indoor temperature measurements under summer and winter climatic conditions. Reference material for indoor temperature comparisons was a prototype made with ordinary ceramic bricks, plastered on both sides. Air temperature measurements were carried out with data-loggers, heat flux plates were attached to an exposed north facade of each test cell, while incoming solar radiation was measured with an experimental solarimeter. • Date palm fibers are durable at bituminous mixture manufacturing temperature. • Fiber addition induced a slight bitumen toughness at service life temperature. • Fiber addition led to complex modulus norm increase at service life temperature. • Date palm fibers significantly decreased binder drainage phenomenon of SMA mixture. • Date palm fibers play the role of reinforcement inside the bituminous matrix. This paper investigated the contribution of plant fibers recovered from date palm waste to modify bitumen properties. Palm fibers were characterized to determine their chemical composition, structure, mass loss by heating and tensile strength and the properties of the bitumen-fiber mixtures were evaluated before and after aging using consistency (penetration, Ring and Ball softening point), rheological and thermal tests. The experiments were completed with binder drainage tests on asphalt mixtures to assess the ability for palm fibers to retain bitumen. The results pointed out that the addition of until 6 wt% fibers to neat bitumen conferred a slightly greater consistency, an increase in viscosity by 50% and complex modulus norm by 40% at service life temperatures, before and after aging. These last trends allow to predict the behavior of the asphalt mixtures towards permanent deformations. Thermal analysis on the different mixtures showed that the addition of fibers induced the increase in bitumen crystallinity. The existence of a semi-crystalline fiber network in the bitumen matrix improves the physico-mechanical characteristics of bitumen. The binder drainage tests performed on asphalt mixtures highlighted bitumen absorption by the fibers; this could be correlated to their microstructure and roughness.
