Abstract

Comparison of isozymes and quantitative traits has been carried out for evaluation of patterns of genetic variation in purple needlegrass (Nassella pulchra) in California where decimation of plants of prairies of California has stimulated interest in conservation and ecological restoration of grasslands using native perennial species. With widespread plantings, potential for contaminating remnant populations with maladapted germplasm is a matter of concern.. Populations were differentiated strongly for isozymes and quantitative traits, but cluster analysis based on each kind of data did not show the same population groupings. An index based on easy-to-get climatic information might help restorationists to make quick decisions about the right spatial scales for translocating native grasses.
