This article reports that U.S. President George W. Bush's bid to extend preferential tax treatment for capital gains and dividend income appeared to be gasping for air last month when Senator Olympia Snowe, forced the U.S. Senate to drop the measure from a broad tax-cut extension bill. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist will likely move by mid-week to go to conference on the tax reconciliation bill. With time winding down, much strategizing and negotiating is left to be done between House and Senate Republicans to determine how much of more than $100 billion in tax cuts in play, with only $60 billion now protected from filibuster in the Senate under budget reconciliation, can become law.
