While communication scientists have made fast advancements in the computer-assisted analysis of large quantities of media data, most research has been focused on monolingual text, most often English-language text. This study works towards the needs of those interested in the computer-assisted analysis of multilingual news media content. For this purpose, we present and systematically compare different strategies for the construction of multilingual dictionaries. Their classification results are contrasted to each other and to those of English monolingual dictionaries that is applied to a translated text corpus. Human manually coded news articles serve as validation baseline. Interested in the news media discourse on human migration in seven European countries, we develop and provide validated dictionaries for the measurement of migration frames in seven languages (Spanish, English, German, Swedish, Polish, Hungarian, Romanian). found to play a key role in the erosion of confidence in public institutions. Based on interviews with 1800 journalists from 18 countries, this paper reports evidence suggesting that journalists around the world have indeed little trust in political parties and politicians, which indicates a generally cynical attitude towards political actors. This finding is strikingly consistent across the investigated 18 societies. Yet there is also considerable variation in the extent to which journalists trust in public institutions, with journalists in western nations being generally more trustful than their colleagues in nonwestern countries. Closer analysis shows that journalists' trust levels are significantly associated with some important measures of political and economic performance, most notably with public satisfaction with a country's economic and political situation. Furthermore, journalists in non-western countries were indeed less trustful of public institutions than the general publics, while in none of the investigated western countries turned journalists out to be less trusting than the general population. On the basis of survey responses of 1390 journalists from 14 countries, this study explores the dimensional structure of perceived influences on news work, models their structural relationships and compares the relative importance of these influences across national boundaries. The results resonate with theoretical expectations of prominent hierarchy-of-influences models. Principal Component Analysis revealed a dimensional structure of influences that consists of six conceptually and empirically distinct domains: political interference, economic imperatives, reference groups, professional conventions, organizational structure and procedural limits. These six dimensions build up a hierarchical structure where organizational and professional influences along with procedural constrains are seen as most powerful limits to the journalists' work. The results of the study place the news organization at the center of the complex nexus of influence: it is the place where political and economic influences are filtered, negotiated and redistributed.
