Abstract
The article attempts to provide an explanation for why, between 1983 and 2001, Argentina chose to attempt to press its territorial claim for the disputed islands of Malvinas and Falkland through peaceful negotiations. It argues that negotiation attempts were used by Argentine leaders in order to divert attention from domestic instability. It examines the validity of several competing alternative explanations for the country's strategy of attempted negotiations with Great Britain.
