In this paper we study the $\mathbb {C}^*$ -fixed points in moduli spaces of Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface for a complex semisimple Lie group and its real forms. These fixed points are called Hodge bundles and correspond to complex variations of Hodge structure. We introduce a topological invariant for Hodge bundles that generalizes the Toledo invariant appearing for Hermitian Lie groups. An important result of this paper is a bound on this invariant which generalizes the Milnor–Wood inequality for a Hodge bundle in the Hermitian case, and is analogous to the Arakelov inequalities of classical variations of Hodge structure. When the generalized Toledo invariant is maximal, we establish rigidity results for the associated variations of Hodge structure which generalize known rigidity results for maximal Higgs bundles and their associated maximal representations in the Hermitian case. Let K be a two-dimensional global field of characteristic ≠ 2 and let V be a divisorial set of places of K. We show that for a given n ≥ 5, the set of K-isomorphism classes of spinor groups G = Spinn(q) of nondegenerate n-dimensional quadratic forms over K that have good reduction at all v ∈ V is finite. This result yields some other finiteness properties, such as the finiteness of the genus genK(G) and the properness of the global-to-local map in Galois cohomology. The proof relies on the finiteness of the unramified cohomology groups Hi(K,μ2)V for i ≥ 1 established in the paper. In this paper, we propose a modified Kudla–Rapoport conjecture for the Krämer model of unitary Rapoport–Zink space at a ramified prime, which is a precise identity relating intersection numbers of special cycles to derivatives of Hermitian local density polynomials. We also introduce the notion of special difference cycles, which has surprisingly simple description. Combining this with induction formulas of Hermitian local density polynomials, we prove the modified Kudla–Rapoport conjecture when $n=3$. Our conjecture, combining with known results at inert and infinite primes, implies the arithmetic Siegel–Weil formula for all non-singular coefficients when the level structure of the corresponding unitary Shimura variety is defined by a self-dual lattice. This is the second of a series of two papers dealing with local limit theorems in relatively hyperbolic groups. In this second paper, we restrict our attention to non-spectrally degenerate random walks and we prove precise asymptotics of the probability $p_n(e,e)$ of going back to the origin at time $n$. We combine techniques adapted from thermodynamic formalism with the rough estimates of the Green function given by part I to show that $p_n(e,e)\sim CR^{-n}n^{-3/2}$ , where $R$ is the inverse of the spectral radius of the random walk. The $4 n^2$ -inequality for smooth points plays an important role in the proofs of birational (super)rigidity. The main aim of this paper is to generalize such an inequality to terminal singular points of type $cA_1$ , and obtain a $2 n^2$ -inequality for $cA_1$ points. As applications, we prove birational (super)rigidity of sextic double solids, many other prime Fano 3-fold weighted complete intersections, and del Pezzo fibrations of degree $1$ over $\mathbb {P}^1$ satisfying the $K^2$ -condition, all of which have at most terminal $cA_1$ singularities and terminal quotient singularities. These give first examples of birationally (super)rigid Fano 3-folds and del Pezzo fibrations admitting a $cA_1$ point which is not an ordinary double point. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Given a perfect field $k$ with algebraic closure $\overline {k}$ and a variety $X$ over $\overline {k}$ , the field of moduli of $X$ is the subfield of $\overline {k}$ of elements fixed by field automorphisms $\gamma \in \operatorname {Gal}(\overline {k}/k)$ such that the Galois conjugate $X_{\gamma }$ is isomorphic to $X$. The field of moduli is contained in all subextensions $k\subset k'\subset \overline {k}$ such that $X$ descends to $k'$. In this paper, we extend the formalism and define the field of moduli when $k$ is not perfect. Furthermore, Dèbes and Emsalem identified a condition that ensures that a smooth curve is defined over its field of moduli, and prove that a smooth curve with a marked point is always defined over its field of moduli. Our main theorem is a generalization of these results that applies to higher-dimensional varieties, and to varieties with additional structures. In order to apply this, we study the problem of when a rational point of a variety with quotient singularities lifts to a resolution. As a consequence, we prove that a variety $X$ of dimension $d$ with a smooth marked point $p$ such that $\operatorname {Aut}(X,p)$ is finite, étale and of degree prime to $d!$ is defined over its field of moduli. In this paper we develop a new technique for showing that a nonlinear algebraic differential equation is strongly minimal based on the recently developed notion of the degree of non-minimality of Freitag and Moosa. Our techniques are sufficient to show that generic order $h$ differential equations with non-constant coefficients are strongly minimal, answering a question of Poizat (1980). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we study persistence features of topological entropy and periodic orbit growth of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on surfaces with respect to Hofer's metric. We exhibit stability of these dynamical quantities in a rather strong sense for a specific family of maps studied by Polterovich and Shelukhin. A crucial ingredient comes from enhancement of lower bounds for the topological entropy and orbit growth forced by a periodic point, formulated in terms of the geometric self-intersection number and a variant of Turaev's cobracket of the free homotopy class that it induces. Let $W = \mathbb {C}[t,t^{-1}]\partial _t$ be the Witt algebra of algebraic vector fields on $\mathbb {C}^\times$ and let $V\!ir$ be the Virasoro algebra , the unique nontrivial central extension of $W$. In this paper, we study the Poisson ideal structure of the symmetric algebras of $V\!ir$ and $W$ , as well as several related Lie algebras. We classify prime Poisson ideals and Poisson primitive ideals of $\operatorname {S}(V\!ir)$ and $\operatorname {S}(W)$. In particular, we show that the only functions in $W^*$ which vanish on a nontrivial Poisson ideal (that is, the only maximal ideals of $\operatorname {S}(W)$ with a nontrivial Poisson core) are given by linear combinations of derivatives at a finite set of points; we call such functions local. Given a local function $\chi \in W^*$ , we construct the associated Poisson primitive ideal through computing the algebraic symplectic leaf of $\chi$ , which gives a notion of coadjoint orbit in our setting. As an application, we prove a structure theorem for subalgebras of $V\!ir$ of finite codimension and show, in particular, that any such subalgebra of $V\!ir$ contains the central element $z$ , substantially generalising a result of Ondrus and Wiesner on subalgebras of codimension one. Let $L$ be a very ample line bundle on a projective scheme $X$ defined over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$ with ${\rm char}\,\Bbbk \neq 2$. We say that $(X,L)$ satisfies property $\mathsf {QR}(k)$ if the homogeneous ideal of the linearly normal embedding $X \subset {\mathbb {P}} H^{0} (X,L)$ can be generated by quadrics of rank less than or equal to $k$. Many classical varieties, such as Segre–Veronese embeddings, rational normal scrolls and curves of high degree, satisfy property $\mathsf {QR}(4)$. In this paper, we first prove that if ${\rm char}\,\Bbbk \neq 3$ then $({\mathbb {P}}^{n} , \mathcal {O}_{{\mathbb {P}}^{n}} (d))$ satisfies property $\mathsf {QR}(3)$ for all $n \geqslant 1$ and $d \geqslant 2$. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of property $\mathsf {QR}(3)$ for any projective scheme. Specifically, we prove that (i) if $X \subset {\mathbb {P}} H^{0} (X,L)$ is $m$ -regular then $(X,L^{d})$ satisfies property $\mathsf {QR}(3)$ for all $d \geqslant m$ , and (ii) if $A$ is an ample line bundle on $X$ then $(X,A^{d})$ satisfies property $\mathsf {QR}(3)$ for all sufficiently large even numbers $d$. These results provide affirmative evidence for the expectation that property $\mathsf {QR}(3)$ holds for all sufficiently ample line bundles on $X$ , as in the cases of Green and Lazarsfeld's condition $\mathrm {N}_p$ and the Eisenbud–Koh–Stillman determininantal presentation in Eisenbud et al. We consider the Weil–Petersson gradient vector field of renormalized volume on the deformation space of convex cocompact hyperbolic structures on (relatively) acylindrical manifolds. In this paper, we give an explicit computable algorithm for the Zelevinsky–Aubert duals of irreducible representations of $p$ -adic symplectic and odd special orthogonal groups. To do this, we establish explicit formulas for certain derivatives and socles. We also give a combinatorial criterion for the irreducibility of certain parabolically induced representations. Let $\psi : \mathbb {N} \to [0,1/2]$ be given. The Duffin–Schaeffer conjecture, recently resolved by Koukoulopoulos and Maynard, asserts that for almost all reals $\alpha$ there are infinitely many coprime solutions $(p,q)$ to the inequality $|\alpha - p/q| , provided that the series $\sum _{q=1}^\infty \varphi (q) \psi (q) / q$ is divergent. In the present paper, we establish a quantitative version of this result, by showing that for almost all $\alpha$ the number of coprime solutions $(p,q)$ , subject to $q \leq Q$ , is of asymptotic order $\sum _{q=1}^Q 2 \varphi (q) \psi (q) / q$. The proof relies on the method of GCD graphs as invented by Koukoulopoulos and Maynard, together with a refined overlap estimate from sieve theory, and number-theoretic input on the 'anatomy of integers'. In this paper, we present a solution to the problem of the analytic classification of germs of plane curves with several irreducible components. The aim of the present paper is to derive effective discrepancy estimates for the distribution of rational points on general semisimple algebraic group varieties, in general families of subsets and at arbitrarily small scales. We establish mean-square, almost sure and uniform estimates for the discrepancy with explicit error bounds. We also prove an analogue of W. Schmidt's theorem, which establishes effective almost sure asymptotic counting of rational solutions to Diophantine inequalities in the Euclidean space. Let $F$ be a separable integral binary form of odd degree $N \geq 5$. A result of Darmon and Granville known as 'Faltings plus epsilon' implies that the degree- $N$ superelliptic equation $y^2 = F(x,z)$ has finitely many primitive integer solutions. In this paper, we consider the family $\mathscr {F}_N(f_0)$ of degree- $N$ superelliptic equations with fixed leading coefficient $f_0 \in \mathbb {Z} \smallsetminus \pm \mathbb {Z}^2$ , ordered by height. For every sufficiently large $N$ , we prove that among equations in the family $\mathscr {F}_N(f_0)$ , more than $74.9\,\%$ are insoluble, and more than $71.8\,\%$ are everywhere locally soluble but fail the Hasse principle due to the Brauer–Manin obstruction. We further show that these proportions rise to at least $99.9\,\%$ and $96.7\,\%$ , respectively, when $f_0$ has sufficiently many prime divisors of odd multiplicity. Our result can be viewed as a strong asymptotic form of 'Faltings plus epsilon' for superelliptic equations and constitutes an analogue of Bhargava's result that most hyperelliptic curves over $\mathbb {Q}$ have no rational points. Let $\mathbb {V}$ be a polarized variation of Hodge structure over a smooth complex quasi-projective variety $S$. In this paper, we give a complete description of the typical Hodge locus for such variations. We prove that it is either empty or equidistributed with respect to a natural differential form, the pull–push form. In particular, it is always analytically dense when the pull–push form does not vanish. When the weight is two, the Hodge numbers are $(q,p,q)$ and the dimension of $S$ is least $rq$ , we prove that the typical locus where the Picard rank is at least $r$ is equidistributed in $S$ with respect to the volume form $c_q^r$ , where $c_q$ is the $q$ th Chern form of the Hodge bundle. We obtain also several equidistribution results of the typical locus in Shimura varieties: a criterion for the density of the typical Hodge loci of a variety in $\mathcal {A}_g$ , equidistribution of certain families of CM points and equidistribution of Hecke translates of curves and surfaces in $\mathcal {A}_g$. These results are proved in the much broader context of dynamics on homogeneous spaces of Lie groups which are of independent interest. For any odd integer $d$ , we give a presentation for the integral Chow ring of the stack $\mathcal {M}_{0}(\mathbb {P}^r, d)$ , as a quotient of the polynomial ring $\mathbb {Z}[c_1,c_2]$. We describe an efficient set of generators for the ideal of relations, and compute them in generating series form. A famous problem in birational geometry is to determine when the birational automorphism group of a Fano variety is finite. The Noether–Fano method has been the main approach to this problem. The purpose of this paper is to give a new approach to the problem by showing that in every positive characteristic, there are Fano varieties of arbitrarily large index with finite (or even trivial) birational automorphism group. To do this, we prove that these varieties admit ample and birationally equivariant line bundles. This paper generalizes the Gan–Gross–Prasad (GGP) conjectures that were earlier formulated for tempered or more generally generic L-packets to Arthur packets, especially for the non-generic L-packets arising from Arthur parameters. The paper introduces the key notion of a relevant pair of Arthur parameters that governs the branching laws for ${{\rm GL}}_n$ and all classical groups over both local fields and global fields. It plays a role for all the branching problems studied in Gan et al. We prove new automorphy lifting theorems for residually reducible Galois representations of unitary type in which the residual representation is permitted to have an arbitrary number of irreducible constituents. Let $p$ be a prime number. Kęstutis Česnavičius proved that for an abelian variety $A$ over a global field $K$ , the $p$ -Selmer group $\mathrm {Sel}_{p}(A/L)$ grows unboundedly when $L$ ranges over the $(\mathbb {Z}/p\mathbb {Z})$ -extensions of $K$. Moreover, he raised a further problem: is $\dim _{\mathbb {F}_{p}} \text{III} (A/L) [p]$ also unbounded under the above conditions? In this paper, we give a positive answer to this problem in the case $p \neq \mathrm {char}\,K$. As an application, this result enables us to generalize the work of Clark, Sharif and Creutz on the growth of potential $\text{III}$ in cyclic extensions. The Hanna Neumann conjecture is a statement about the rank of the intersection of two finitely generated subgroups of a free group. The conjecture was posed by Hanna Neumann in 1957. In 2011, a strengthened version of the conjecture was proved independently by Joel Friedman and by Igor Mineyev. In this paper we show that the strengthened Hanna Neumann conjecture holds not only in free groups but also in non-solvable surface groups. In addition, we show that a retract in a free group and in a surface group is inert. This implies the Dicks–Ventura inertia conjecture for free and surface groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we compute the topological Hochschild homology of quotients of discrete valuation rings (DVRs). Along the way we give a short argument for Bökstedt periodicity and generalizations over various other bases. Our strategy also gives a very efficient way to redo the computations of $\operatorname {THH}$ (respectively, logarithmic $\operatorname {THH}$) of complete DVRs originally due to Lindenstrauss and Madsen (respectively, Hesselholt and Madsen). In an earlier paper of Wee Teck Gan and Gordan Savin, the local Langlands correspondence for metaplectic groups over a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero was established. Suppose that $f:X\to C$ is a general Jacobian elliptic surface over ${\mathbb {C}}$ of irregularity $q$ and positive geometric genus $h$. Assume that $10 h>12(q-1)$ , that $h>0$ and let $\overline {\mathcal {E}\ell \ell }$ denote the stack of generalized elliptic curves. (1) The moduli stack $\mathcal {JE}$ of such surfaces is smooth at the point $X$ and its tangent space $T$ there is naturally a direct sum of lines $(v_a)_{a\in Z}$ , where $Z\subset C$ is the ramification locus of the classifying morphism $\phi :C\to \overline {\mathcal {E}\ell \ell }$ that corresponds to $X\to C$. (2) For each $a\in Z$ the map $\overline {\nabla }_{v_a}:H^{2,0}(X)\to H^{1,1}_{\rm prim}(X)$ defined by the derivative $per_*$ of the period map $per$ is of rank one. Its image is a line ${\mathbb {C}}[\eta _a]$ and its kernel is $H^0(X,\Omega ^2_X(-E_a))$ , where $E_a=f^{-1}(a)$. Structures where we have both a contravariant (pullback) and a covariant (pushforward) functoriality that satisfy base change can be encoded by functors out of ($\infty$ -)categories of spans (or correspondences). In this paper, we study the more complicated setup where we have two pushforwards (an 'additive' and a 'multiplicative' one), satisfying a distributivity relation. Such structures can be described in terms of bispans (or polynomial diagrams). We show that there exist $(\infty,2)$ -categories of bispans, characterized by a universal property: they corepresent functors out of $\infty$ -categories of spans where the pullbacks have left adjoints and certain canonical 2-morphisms (encoding base change and distributivity) are invertible. This gives a universal way to obtain functors from bispans, which amounts to upgrading 'monoid-like' structures to 'ring-like' ones. For example, symmetric monoidal $\infty$ -categories can be described as product-preserving functors from spans of finite sets, and if the tensor product is compatible with finite coproducts our universal property gives the canonical semiring structure using the coproduct and tensor product. More interestingly, we encode the additive and multiplicative transfers on equivariant spectra as a functor from bispans in finite $G$ -sets, extend the norms for finite étale maps in motivic spectra to a functor from certain bispans in schemes, and make $\mathrm {Perf}(X)$ for $X$ a spectral Deligne–Mumford stack a functor of bispans using a multiplicative pushforward for finite étale maps in addition to the usual pullback and pushforward maps. Let $p$ be a rational prime, let $F$ denote a finite, unramified extension of ${{\mathbb {Q}}}_p$ , let $K$ be the maximal unramified extension of ${{\mathbb {Q}}}_p$ , ${{\overline {K}}}$ some fixed algebraic closure of $K$ , and ${{\mathbb {C}}}_p$ be the completion of ${{\overline {K}}}$. Let $G_F$ be the absolute Galois group of $F$. Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over $F$ , with good reduction. Classically, the Fontaine integral was seen as a Hodge–Tate comparison morphism, i.e. as a map $\varphi _{A} \otimes 1_{{{\mathbb {C}}}_p}\colon T_p(A)\otimes _{{{\mathbb {Z}}}_p}{{\mathbb {C}}}_p\to \operatorname {Lie}(A)(F)\otimes _F{{\mathbb {C}}}_p(1)$ , and as such it is surjective and has a large kernel. This paper starts with the observation that if we do not tensor $T_p(A)$ with ${{\mathbb {C}}}_p$ , then the Fontaine integral is often injective. In particular, it is proved that if $T_p(A)^{G_K} = 0$ , then $\varphi _A$ is injective. As an application, we extend the Fontaine integral to a perfectoid like universal cover of $A$ and show that if $T_p(A)^{G_K} = 0$ , then $A(\overline {K})$ has a type of $p$ -adic uniformization, which resembles the classical complex uniformization. In this paper, we prove the Fukui–Kurdyka–Paunescu conjecture, which says that sub-analytic arc-analytic bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms preserve the multiplicities of real analytic sets. We also prove several other results on the invariance of the multiplicity (respectively, degree) of real and complex analytic (respectively, algebraic) sets. For instance, still in the real case, we prove a global version of the Fukui–Kurdyka–Paunescu conjecture. In the complex case, one of the results that we prove is the following: if $(X,0)\subset (\mathbb {C}^{n},0)$ , $(Y,0)\subset (\mathbb {C}^{m},0)$ are germs of analytic sets and $h\colon (X,0)\to (Y,0)$ is a semi-bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism whose graph is a complex analytic set, then the germs $(X,0)$ and $(Y,0)$ have the same multiplicity. One of the results that we prove in the global case is the following: if $X\subset \mathbb {C}^{n}$ , $Y\subset \mathbb {C}^{m}$ are algebraic sets and $\phi \colon X\to Y$ is a semi-algebraic semi-bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism such that the closure of its graph in $\mathbb {P}^{n+m}(\mathbb {C})$ is an orientable homological cycle, then ${\rm deg}(X)={\rm deg}(Y)$. A celebrated result by Orlov states that any fully faithful exact functor between the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties is of geometric origin, i.e. it is a Fourier–Mukai functor. In this paper we prove that any smooth projective variety of dimension $\ge 3$ equipped with a tilting bundle can serve as the source variety of a non-Fourier–Mukai functor between smooth projective schemes. The main goal of this paper is to construct a compactification of the moduli space of degree $d \geqslant 5$ surfaces in $\mathbb {P}^{3}_{{{\mathbb {C}}}}$ , i.e. a parameter space whose interior points correspond to (equivalence classes of) smooth surfaces in $\mathbb {P}^{3}$ and whose boundary points correspond to degenerations of such surfaces. We consider a divisor $D$ on a Fano variety $Z$ as a pair $(Z, D)$ satisfying certain properties. We find a modular compactification of such pairs and, in the case of $Z = {{\mathbb {P}}}^{3}$ and $D$ a surface, use their properties to classify the pairs on the boundary of the moduli space. We study derived categories of Gorenstein varieties $X$ and $X^+$ connected by a flop. We assume that the flopping contractions $f\colon X\to Y$ , $f^+ \colon X^+ \to Y$ have fibers of dimension bounded by one and $Y$ has canonical hypersurface singularities of multiplicity two. We consider the fiber product $W=X\times _YX^+$ with projections $p\colon W\to X$ , $p^+\colon W\to X^+$ and prove that the flop functors $F = Rp^+_*Lp^* \colon {\mathcal {D}}^b(X) \to {\mathcal {D}}^b(X^+)$ , $F^+= Rp_*L{p^+}^* \colon {\mathcal {D}}^b(X^+) \to {\mathcal {D}}^b(X)$ are equivalences, inverse to those constructed by Van den Bergh. The composite $F^+ \circ F \colon {\mathcal {D}}^b(X) \to {\mathcal {D}}^b(X)$ is a non-trivial auto-equivalence. When variety $Y$ is affine, we present $F^+ \circ F$ as the spherical cotwist of a spherical couple $(\Psi ^*,\Psi)$ which involves a spherical functor $\Psi$ constructed by deriving the inclusion of the null category $\mathscr {A}_f$ of sheaves ${\mathcal {F}} \in \mathop {{\rm Coh}}\nolimits (X)$ with $Rf_*({\mathcal {F}})=0$ into $\mathop {{\rm Coh}}\nolimits (X)$. We construct a spherical pair (${\mathcal {D}}^b(X)$ , ${\mathcal {D}}^b(X^+)$) in the quotient ${\mathcal {D}}^b(W) /{\mathcal {K}}^b$ , where ${\mathcal {K}}^b$ is the common kernel of the derived push-forwards for the projections to $X$ and $X^+$ , thus implementing in geometric terms a schober for the flop. A technical innovation of the paper is the $L^1f^*f_*$ vanishing for Van den Bergh's projective generator. In this paper we construct an action of the affine Hecke category (in its 'Soergel bimodules' incarnation) on the principal block of representations of a simply connected semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic bigger than the Coxeter number. This confirms a conjecture of G. Williamson and the second author, and provides a new proof of the tilting character formula in terms of antispherical $p$ -Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials. The pentagram map takes a planar polygon $P$ to a polygon $P'$ whose vertices are the intersection points of consecutive shortest diagonals of $P$. This map is known to interact nicely with Poncelet polygons, that is, polygons which are simultaneously inscribed in a conic and circumscribed about a conic. A theorem of Schwartz states that if $P$ is a Poncelet polygon, then the image of $P$ under the pentagram map is projectively equivalent to $P$. In the present paper, we show that in the convex case this property characterizes Poncelet polygons: if a convex polygon is projectively equivalent to its pentagram image, then it is Poncelet. Finite $W$-algebras are certain associative algebras arising in Lie theory. Each $W$-algebra is constructed from a pair of a semisimple Lie algebra ${\mathfrak{g}}$ (our base field is algebraically closed and of characteristic 0) and its nilpotent element $e$. In this paper we classify finite-dimensional irreducible modules with integral central character over $W$-algebras. In more detail, in a previous paper the first author proved that the component group $A(e)$ of the centralizer of the nilpotent element under consideration acts on the set of finite-dimensional irreducible modules over the $W$-algebra and the quotient set is naturally identified with the set of primitive ideals in $U({\mathfrak{g}})$ whose associated variety is the closure of the adjoint orbit of $e$. In this paper, for a given primitive ideal with integral central character, we compute the corresponding $A(e)$-orbit. The answer is that the stabilizer of that orbit is basically a subgroup of $A(e)$ introduced by G. Lusztig. In the proof we use a variety of different ingredients: the structure theory of primitive ideals and Harish-Chandra bimodules for semisimple Lie algebras, the representation theory of $W$-algebras, the structure theory of cells and Springer representations, and multi-fusion monoidal categories. In this paper, we prove the assertion that the number of monic cubic polynomials $F(x) = x^3 + a_2 x^2 + a_1 x + a_0$ with integer coefficients and irreducible, Galois over ${\mathbb {Q}}$ satisfying $\max \{|a_2|, |a_1|, |a_0|\} \leq X$ is bounded from above by $O(X (\log X)^2)$. We also count the number of abelian monic binary cubic forms with integer coefficients up to a natural equivalence relation ordered by the so-called Bhargava–Shankar height. In this paper we study Zimmer's conjecture for $C^{1}$ actions of lattice subgroup of a higher-rank simple Lie group with finite center on compact manifolds. We show that when the rank of an uniform lattice is larger than the dimension of the manifold, then the action factors through a finite group. In earlier work, the first named author generalized the construction of Darmon-style $\mathcal {L}$ -invariants to cuspidal automorphic representations of semisimple groups of higher rank, which are cohomological with respect to the trivial coefficient system and Steinberg at a fixed prime. In this paper, assuming that the Archimedean component of the group has discrete series we show that these automorphic $\mathcal {L}$ -invariants can be computed in terms of derivatives of Hecke eigenvalues in $p$ -adic families. Our proof is novel even in the case of modular forms, which was established by Bertolini, Darmon and Iovita. The main new technical ingredient is the Koszul resolution of locally analytic principal series representations by Kohlhaase and Schraen. As an application of our results we settle a conjecture of Spieß: we show that automorphic $\mathcal {L}$ -invariants of Hilbert modular forms of parallel weight $2$ are independent of the sign character used to define them. Moreover, we show that they are invariant under Jacquet–Langlands transfer and, in fact, equal to the Fontaine–Mazur $\mathcal {L}$ -invariant of the associated Galois representation. Under mild assumptions, we also prove the equality of automorphic and Fontaine–Mazur $\mathcal {L}$ -invariants for representations of definite unitary groups of arbitrary rank. Finally, we study the case of Bianchi modular forms to show how our methods, given precise results on eigenvarieties, can also work in the absence of discrete series representations.
