Purpose: Hypertension is the primary cause of mortality. Hence globally, there is a growing interest in complementing antihypertensive drugs with herbs to alleviate blood pressure among hypertensive patients. Thus, this review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of complementing drugs with herbs on blood pressure and lipid profile outcomes, the associated factors and the types of complementary herbs alongside their consumption regimes. Methods: This review is registered in PROSPERO on the National Institute of Health Database with an ID: CRD42021270481. Using the PICOS (population, intervention, comparison, outcome, study type) mnemonic formula and search strategy, we searched (January 2010 to February 2024) five electronic databases including Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL (Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health Literature) and Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection (PBSC). The inclusion criteria of the review were that all included papers had to be randomised control trials in English among hypertensive adults who complemented antihypertensive drugs with herbs. A Cochrane risk of bias assessment as well as a meta-analysis and narrative synthesis were conducted to answer the objectives. Results: Twenty-five randomised controlled trials involving 1996 participants from 14 countries were included. The risk of bias among included articles was assessed and presented using the Cochrane risk of bias tool and the graphs were generated. The effects of complementing antihypertensive drugs with different herb regimes on blood pressure and lipid profile outcomes were compared to those solely on antihypertensive drugs and placebo via a random model effects meta-analysis using the Revman manager. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and triglycerides gave a significant reduction in favour of the intervention group which complemented herbs. However, diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL and LDL did not exert significant outcomes. The complemented herbs with antihypertensive drugs did show improvement in overall blood pressure management in the majority of the studies compared to the placebo group. Blood pressure and lipid profiles are the health outcomes that enable access to complementing herbs in controlling high blood pressure. Background: Traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) has been integrated into the Malaysian public healthcare system since the establishment of the first T&CM unit at a public hospital in 2007. Assessing patient satisfaction is a vital component of health service evaluation. The main objective of this study is to determine the level of patient satisfaction with the utilization of T&CM services at public hospitals in Malaysia and assess the sociodemographic influence on the overall reporting of satisfaction. This study also aims to analyze the response of the patients towards expansion of T&CM services in the public sector in Malaysia.Materials and Methods: A study was conducted to analyze data on the utilization of T&CM services within public hospitals. Secondary data on 822 patients' satisfaction with services offered at 15 T&CM units was analyzed to examine the overall levels of satisfaction with T&CM services in public hospitals in Malaysia.Results: Overall, 99.4% of patients were satisfied with T&CM services and most patients (91.8%) felt that T&CM treatment positively impacted their health. Overall satisfaction was not affected by lower levels of satisfaction with subcategories of service, such as the number of treatment sessions received (90.7% satisfied), date to the next appointment (90.7% satisfied), and the absence of adverse effects of treatment received (87.1% satisfied). There were no significant associations between the socioeconomic status of the respondents and the level of satisfaction reported; however, respondents with a monthly salary of Ringgit Malaysia (RM) 1000 to RM 3000 were more than twice as likely to be strongly satisfied with services received (adjusted odds ratios [AOR]: 2.12, 95% CI: 1.19-3.78).Conclusion: This study revealed a high level of satisfaction among patients who had received T&CM treatment at public hospitals in Malaysia. Summary: Background: The increasing popularity and use of traditional and complementary medicine (TCAM) in both developed and developing countries, including Malaysia, have raised significant public health policy issues. However, currently, there is a paucity of baseline data on such usage by the Malaysian community. Objective: This study was conducted to identify and describe the prevalence and frequency of various TCAM modalities that are being used by the Malaysian population by age, gender, marital and working status, educational level and ethnic group for health issues and maintenance. Design: A nationwide interviewer-administered questionnaire survey was conducted in August 2004. An open-ended questionnaire pertaining to TCAM modalities was used to increase the probability of capturing maximum data. This survey implemented a multistage design, stratified by state and urban/rural random sampling, proportionate to the size of the state population and was representative of the Malaysian population. Post-survey classification of modalities was done accordingly. Complex data analysis was carried out using SPSS 13.0. Results: Various TCAM modalities that were used by the Malaysian population were identified and categorised. Biological-based therapies, which included herbal therapy, were most commonly used for health problems (88.9%) and for health maintenance (87.3%). Under this category, herb-based application/herb-based beauty product/herb-based hygiene product group was most commonly used for health issues (23.6%) while pure herbs were the ones most commonly used for health maintenance (29.6%). There was no significant difference across all groups in the usage of biological-based therapies for health issues. Conclusion: The study showed that there is a high prevalence of TCAM use by the Malaysian population, particularly in the use of herb-based therapies for both health issues and health maintenance. Summary: The objective of this study was to determine if complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) Users are more autonomous than Non-Users with respect to their preferred role in decision-making (measured by the problem-solving decision-making or PSDM scale). A survey was mailed in spring 2001 to a random sample of 696 men (selected from the Ontario Cancer Registry), aged 18 years or older and diagnosed with prostate cancer in the preceding 2 years. Less than 5% of the 489 (72.1% response rate) men (mean age 68.6 years) who responded to the PSDM question in our survey were classified as having an autonomous role preference, while almost 1/3 of the respondents reported using CAM for their prostate cancer. The majority of respondents were classified as preferring a shared role and a substantial minority was classified as preferring a passive role. There was no statistically significant difference between CAM users and non-users with respect to their preferred role. The hypothesis that CAM Users are more autonomous problem solvers and decision makers is not supported by these findings; however, the generalizability of our results is limited by the fact that we surveyed a relatively older male population only. Purpose: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use among cancer patients is increasing over the years. Some types of CAM may interact with conventional cancer therapy or may cause serious adverse effects. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of CAM use among cancer patients during cancer therapy and to identify CAM users' characteristics, perception, reasoning, expectation and disclosure of CAM use.Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted between July 2017 to October 2017, on 121 cancer patients in oncology and hematology clinics and daycare of a tertiary hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Study data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire.Results: The prevalence of CAM use among cancer patients was found to be 61.2 %. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that CAM use was associated with change in outlook on life after development of cancer. The most frequently used types of CAM were vitamins and Islamic medical practices. Majority of patients were guided by family and friends' suggestions towards using CAM. Most patients expected CAM to cure their disease. The percentage of patients who disclosed CAM use to the doctors was slightly higher than those who did not disclose CAM use.Conclusion: The use of CAM was found to be remarkably high. Rate of non-disclosure of CAM use was high indicating the need for enhancement of doctor- patient relationship for effective patient's care. Future research is needed with large sample of patients to provide better representation of the population and to help understand patients' beliefs and perception more. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To examine prevalence and modalities of CAM use in children living in Novara, a northern Italian city, and to estimate the prescription rate from paediatricians.Method: We administered a phone questionnaire to the parents of a sample of 147 children, asking questions about CAM use, children's health profile, parental socio-economic status, use modalities, effectiveness perceptions, and motivations. A parallel survey was conducted by e-mail by investigating family paediatricians attitudes about CAM.Results: Among 147 children whose families responded to our survey 48.3% was treated with CAM at least once in life and 38,1% during the previous year. Children treated with CAM were on average younger than those who were not. The types of CAM used were herbal medicine and homeopathy. Parents who choose CAM for their children were more skeptical about vaccinations. CAM were most frequently used to treat pathologies of ear, nose and throat. 85.9% of parents was willing to use CAM in future, 78.9% would pass to conventional medicine if CAM failed. Among paediatricians 81.5% prescribed CAM at least once, but only 13.6% received specific CAM training.Conclusion: The prevalence of children using CAM in Novara is high, in line with investigations conducted in Northern European countries. The distribution of pathologies treated with CAM, parental socio-economic status and general scepticism towards vaccination are consistent with the literature. Physicians should keep themselves up-to-date also about evidence-based CAM therapies and, most importantly, should have an open dialogue about CAM with their patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To examine the prevalence and utilization pattern of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for insomnia in Hong Kong., Methods: Respondents were selected from the general population and interviewed by telephone Their sleep was assessed by a Chinese version of the Brief Insomnia Questionnaire (BIQ) and CAM use by a checklist. Prevalence findings were weighted by the BIQ insomnia diagnosis, age, and sex., Results: 402 respondents completed the survey. The population-weighted prevalence of any treatment in the past 12 months was 21.3%, any CAM use at 12.3%, any conventional treatment at 6.5%, and alcohol use at 1.6%; however, 46.6% of the BIQ insomnia cases did not seek treatment. The most commonly used CAM modalities was Chinese herbal medicine (7.9%), followed by acupuncture (1.7%) and Western herbal products (1.7%). Most CAM therapies were used infrequently and without consultation of healthcare professionals. Only BIQ insomnia diagnosis and being female were found predictive of CAM use., Conclusions: Apart from Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture, the use of conventional treatments, CAM, and alcohol for trouble sleeping was all less common in Hong Kong.
