Abstract

Peer support groups have become widely utilized among those in recovery from problematic substance use. Yet, these peer-based programs vary and research examining their effectiveness has yielded mixed results. Relatively less is known about the impacts of arts-based peer recovery programs. Some research suggests that theatre may offer a powerful tool to address biopsychosocial changes among individuals in recovery. To explore the role of arts-based peer support programs, we draw on qualitative interviews with performers in two arts-based recovery programs. Our findings suggest that arts-based peer recovery programs may aid individuals in recovery in four main ways. Performing allowed participants to build relationships with others in recovery, channel experiences creatively while challenging stigma, foster confidence and recovery-identity formation, aiding participants in working through emotional impacts of prior substance use. These findings support emerging scholarship examining the role of performance in challenging stereotypes about substance use to aid those in recovery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This case study describes the "Entrelaços" Peer Support Program, a psychoeducational program of a psychiatric institution in the city of Rio de Janeiro that admitted, between 2011 and 2019, 246 people comprising family members and patients to participate in eight educational seminars followed by multifamily problem-solving groups in cycles that were 18 months in duration. Ninety percent of the participants who completed the program decided to create 7 mutual-help groups in the community independent of technicians and the institution. Community groups have already served spontaneously more than 214 families. They have organized scientific, social and anti-stigma events, expanded their social support network and demonstrated empowerment by switching from service users to peer providers to receive new families. This work is based on a pioneering model in Brazil that integrates psychoeducation with problem-solving therapy, spreading the benefits of education and peer-support with lower cost and greater representativeness. Abstract

The Hearing Voices Network (HVN) is an influential service-user led organisation that promotes self-help as an important aspect of recovery. This study presents the first systematic assessment of the impact and effectiveness of HVN self-help groups. A customized 45-item questionnaire, the Hearing Voices Groups Survey, was sent to 62 groups affiliated with the English HVN. 101 responses were received. Group attendance was credited with a range of positive emotional, social and clinical outcomes. Aspects that were particularly valued included: opportunities to meet other voice hearers, provision of support that was unavailable elsewhere, and the group being a safe and confidential place to discuss difficult issues. Participants perceived HVN groups to facilitate recovery processes and to be an important resource for helping them cope with their experiences. Mental health professionals can use their expertise to support the successful running of these groups.
