Research shows that, in mental healthcare, empathy and active listening skills play a fundamental role in the therapeutic relationship. Despite this, clinicians receive little training in cultivating these qualities, and there is a dearth of training in therapeutic relationships and relational care in this field more generally. In response to this paucity of training, a new intensive three-day training programme has been developed called Compassionate and Relational Enquiry (CARE). The CARE training programme has recently been delivered to a number of mental health teams in different boroughs of an NHS Trust and has undergone several rounds of redevelopment. This paper outlines the CARE training programme's objectives and mode of delivery, and subsequently presents questionnaire results from recent CARE trainees regarding their experience of the nature and utility of the training. Four main themes emerged from responses to the question of the utility of the training, these were 'A shift towards more person-centred care', 'Strengthens the therapeutic relationship', 'Facilitates more collaborative care with patients and their families' and 'Development of new skills and therapeutic techniques'. Psychiatric medication discontinuation is common and can have negative impacts. Until recently, most research on discontinuation happened in an adherence/compliance framework. There is now recognition that discontinuation may be a desired goal for many individuals. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the results of a pioneering survey to explore professional support to service users during medication discontinuation to inform clinical practice and guide future research. Survey responses from 250 service users were summarized with regard to their use of prescriber and psychotherapy services during the process of discontinuing psychiatric medication. Only 65% of respondents reported seeing a prescriber and less than 50% reported seeing a psychotherapist while attempting to discontinue psychiatric medication. Combined with respondents' answers describing the decision-making process and support received from these services, this paper identifies gaps in service and the need to improve providers' ability to support individuals while they discontinue psychiatric medication. Measurement based care (MBC), a practice that uses patient reported outcome measures (PROMs), is not widely used in behavioral health settings and little is known about the patient experience with MBC in safety-net settings. This study aimed to understand patient experiences completing PROMs on paper when presenting to an outpatient, behavioral health setting within a public safety-net hospital. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 participants in English and Spanish. Participants were 42 years old (SD = 12.7), mostly white (36.4%) and Black (31.8%). Thematic analysis was used to analyze findings. Overall, participants were engaged with PROMs and described them as helpful for themselves and their clinicians. Participants also expressed themes focused on PROMs user-friendliness, including formatting, time to complete measures, and participant characteristics such as attention and literacy. The Sequential Intercept Model has helped conceptualize interventions for people with serious mental illness in the criminal/legal system. This paper operationalizes the Sequential Intercept Model into a 35-item scorecard of behavioral health and legal practices. Using interviews, survey, and observational methods, the scorecard assesses an exploratory sample of 19 counties over 27 independent data collections. A series of ordinary least squares regression models assessed the predictor scores on four jail outcomes: prevalence of serious mental illness, length of stay, connections to treatment, and recidivism. Increases in pre-booking scores showed significant decreases in jail prevalence of serious mental illness at the p < 0.05 level, and post-booking scores and overall scores showed significant positive associations with connections to treatment at the p < 0.05 level, though these were non-significant after correcting for multiple comparisons. Preliminary findings suggest a combination of practices across the Sequential Intercept Model could have synergistic impacts on key jail diversion outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper uses secondary analysis to understand how COVID-19 shaped people's experiences with psychosocial support services in Australia. Data are drawn from questionnaires (n = 66) and semi-structured interviews (n = 62), conducted for a national service evaluation, with 121 people living with enduring mental health conditions and using psychosocial support services. Data relating to COVID-19 were inductively coded and analysed using constant comparative analysis. Most people's experiences included tele-support. While some people described minimal disruption to their support, many reported reduced engagement. People's wellbeing and engagement were influenced by: their location, living situation and pre-COVID lifestyles; physical health conditions; access to, comfort with, and support worker facilitation of technology; pre-COVID relationships with support workers; and communication from the organisation. The findings can help services prepare for future pandemics, adjust their services for a 'COVID-normal' world, and consider how learnings from COVID-19 could be incorporated into a flexible suite of service delivery options. This paper focuses on investigating public attitudes towards mentally disordered offenders (MDOs), by considering if the Police and Community Attitudes towards Offenders with Mental Illness (PACAMI-O; Glendinning and O'Keeffe in J Mental Health Train Educ Pract 10(2):73–84, 2015) is a valid tool. An opportunity sample of the general public (N = 504) read a fictional vignette depicting an individual with schizophrenia, then answered the PACAMI-O. An exploratory factor analysis revealed a 4 factor solution: Social distance & location of Services, Mental Health Spending, Attitudes towards Psychiatric Facilities and Community Acceptance. The results suggested that 12 items in the PACAMI-O did not contribute towards measuring public attitudes. Therefore 28 items were retained for the new, more concise, valid scale; Public Attitudes towards Offenders with Mental Illness (PATOMI). Uncertainty and isolation have been linked to mental health problems. Uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to trigger mental health problems, which include anxiety, stress, and depression. This paper evaluates the prevalence, psychological responses, and associated correlates of depression, anxiety, and stress in a global population during the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic. A cross-sectional study design was adopted. 678 completed forms were collected during the COVID-19 quarantine/lockdown. An online questionnaire was designed and DASS-21 was used as the screening tool. A non-probability sampling technique strategy was applied. 50.9% of participants showed traits of anxiety, 57.4% showed signs of stress, and 58.6% exhibited depression. Stress, anxiety, and depression are overwhelmingly prevalent across the globe during this COVID-19 pandemic, and multiple factors can influence the rates of these mental health conditions. Our factorial analysis showed notable associations and manifestations of stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. People aged 18–24, females, and people in non-marital relationships experienced stress, anxiety, and depression. Separated individuals experienced stress and anxiety. Married people experienced anxiety. Single and divorced people experienced depression. Unemployed individuals experienced stress and depression. Students experienced anxiety and depression. Canada, the UK, and Pakistan are all countries that are experiencing stress and depression as a whole. An extended number of days in quarantine was associated with increased stress, anxiety, and depression. Family presence yielded lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. This paper examines differences in health-and-social care utilisation for individuals with physical and/or mental health problems. Logistic regression models are used to determine disparity in the percentage of General Household/Lifestyle Survey participants with physical compared to mental health problems receiving disability benefits or health care services between 2000 and 2011. Our findings of a relative underutilisation of secondary health care combined with a relative overutilization of out-of-work benefits by individuals with mental health problems is novel to the field of rehabilitative health care. These results provide evidence for the previously suspected disparity in health care utilisation of individuals with mental health problems and indicate problems in labour force integration. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the quality of life (QoL), daily lifestyle, and mental health of people suffering from a mental disorder. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the prolongation of the COVID-19 emergency on QoL and lifestyles in a sample of 100 outpatients at the Psychiatry Unit in Palermo University Hospital, Italy. QoL was measured through the 12-item Short Form Survey and the COV19-Impact on Quality of Life. Lifestyle changes during the pandemic were measured through the lifestyle change questionnaire. The majority of participants reported a great impact of COVID-19 on the QoL, and almost half reported worsened lifestyles. Worsened lifestyles were predictive of both poor mental and physical health related QoL. These results suggest that people with mental illness need interventions targeting lifestyles, and the mental health service in Italy should adjust to the ongoing pandemic, developing virtual treatments. The object of this paper was to investigate the experiences of patients with severe mental illness (SMI) living in a community, including their utilization of care and treatment services. Psychiatric care and social services staff members were asked to make an inventory of those they served in two districts of Malmö, Sweden. Participants had to be over 18 years of age and unable to manage their daily lives without help from others. Almost all of the 80 participants (95 %) were under psychiatric care. A majority (86 %) was receiving dental treatment, and 61 % were supported by social services. Fifty-four percent of the participants received somatic care on an ongoing basis. Although the majority reported the care given as sufficient, one-third of this SMI population considered the care and support they received to be insufficient. Satisfying those who are dissatisfied with the care they are being given would be a significant challenge for service providers, since the unsatisfied are shown to have more difficult lives. Depressive symptoms are common in South African primary care patients with chronic medical conditions, but are usually unrecognised and untreated. This study evaluated an integrated, task-sharing collaborative approach to management of depression comorbid with chronic diseases in primary health care (PHC) patients in a real-world setting. Existing HIV clinic counsellors provided a manualised depression counselling intervention with stepped-up referral pathways to PHC doctors for initiation of anti-depressant medication and/ or referral to specialist mental health services. Using a comparative group cohort design, adult PHC patients in 10 PHC facilities were screened with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 with those scoring above the validated cut-off enrolled. PHC nurses independently assessed, diagnosed and referred patients. Referral for treatment was independently associated with substantial improvements in depression symptoms three months later. The study confirms the viability of task-shared stepped-up collaborative care for depression treatment using co-located counselling in underserved real-world PHC settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Training for health services staff often focuses on improving individual practitioner's knowledge and skills, with less emphasis given to the broader organizational context, in particular those elements that support successful implementation of changes post-training. This paper compares the effectiveness of a standard training model for suicide prevention to an enhanced training model. The training involved the public mental health workforce throughout the State of Queensland, Australia and was developed in collaboration with the State health department and as such took place within a policy and practice context. The standard training involved participation in a one-day training workshop, which provided information on evidence-based suicide prevention strategies. The enhanced model took an organizational development approach and incorporated a focus on creating and strengthening networks to enhance the capacity of mental health service staff to undertake preventive strategies. The relatively high rate of suicide among UK farmers suggests that they may suffer greater mental health problems than the general population. This paper provides a comparison of the psychological morbidity of farmers and their partners/spouses with non-farmers. The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) was administered using face-to-face interviews with 784 attendees of agricultural shows in the UK. Results show that GHQ-12 scores for farmers and their partners/spouses were significantly higher ( P < 0.001) than those for the non-farming population, indicating higher psychological morbidity among farmer families. Approximately 35% of farmers had scores 12 and higher (recommended cut-off for psychiatric disorders), compared to 27% of non-farmers. Within the farmers group, male respondents, those aged from 45 to 64, self-employed or not in paid employment, having a non-supervisory position and living in a rural area were characterized by higher mean GHQ-12 scores compared to correspondent subgroups from the non-farming population. The purpose of this paper is to provide psychometric data on the Parental Attitudes Toward Psychological Services Inventory (PATPSI), which is a revised measure to assess parents' attitudes toward outpatient mental health services. Using a sample of adults ( N = 250), Study 1 supported a 3-factor structure (RMSEA = .05, NNFI = .94, and CFI = .94), adequate internal consistency (ranging from .72 to .92), and test-retest reliability (ranging from .66 to .84). Additionally, results indicated that individuals with previous use of mental health services reported more positive views toward child mental health services. Study 2 provided confirming evidence of the 3-factor structure (NNFI = .94, RMSEA = .08, and the CFI = .95) and adequate reliability (ranging from .70 to .90) using a parent-sample ( N = 260). The School Mental Health (SMH) services play critical roles fostering positive mental health and helping children with psychological problems. Despite its proven value, SMH services remain less developed in India. In this context, sensitizing teachers about child mental health issues could be considered as an important step in SMH promotion. Towards this goal, a large scale sensitization program for school teachers on SMH issues was carried out in an Indian city. Access to psychological interventions for people under Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Teams (CRHTTs) is limited. The Crisis Toolbox (CTB) is a skills-based intervention designed to increase access using flexible methods of delivery. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical effects of the CTB. A retrospective service evaluation of 399 participants who accessed the CTB between November 2020 and February 2021 was employed. Sessional measures comprising the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalised Anxiety Scale (GAD-7) were recorded across three time points. Overall, there were significantly decreasing trends in PHQ-9 (β = − 1.6, p < 0.001) and GAD-7 scores (β = − 1.5, p < 0.001) in participants who accessed the CTB. The magnitude and direction of specific trends differed according to age, diagnosis, and neurodiversity. The CTB could help reduce depression and anxiety in people experiencing crisis. The SECURE STAIRS framework promotes trauma informed understanding and training across the workforce to inform work with children and young people. A component of the framework is the 'Trauma Informed Practice with Children and Young People in Secure Settings' (TIPSS) training programme for multidisciplinary staff. Between November 2020 and May 2021, a total of 123 members of multidisciplinary staff from a Secure Children's Home (SCH) in the North East of England attended five-day TIPSS training. A pre-post repeated measures design was adopted. Paired samples t-tests were used to analyse pre- and post- questionnaires regarding self-reported levels of (i) knowledge, (ii) understanding and (iii) confidence across Attachment and Developmental Trauma, Understanding Complex Behaviour and Trauma Informed Care training modules. Staff reported significant (p ≤.001) post-training improvements in knowledge, understanding, and confidence across all three training modules. Public stigma toward those experiencing symptoms of schizophrenia in the general population is high; yet research into such stigma within the diverse Latino communities remains under-investigated. This study employed a randomized experimental vignette methodology to assess various domains of public stigma toward individuals experiencing psychosis and/or diabetes within Latino communities. A communitybased sample of 243 Latino adults participated. Contrary to our expectations, respondents who were more sympathetic toward those with mental health problems tended to score higher on public stigma. The belief that a person was responsible for their own mental health problems was associated with higher levels of stigma. Results indicate that perceptions of dangerousness toward someone experiencing psychosis were common, and the perception that a person was responsible for their mental health problems was associated with higher levels of stigma Results emphasize the complex nature of stigma within the diverse Latino communities and the need for ongoing research. Suicide is a global concern with rates in Australia continuing to increase. Effective post-suicidal care is critical for reducing persistent suicidal behaviour. One model of care is that adopted by Alfred Health, delivering a multidisciplinary, hybrid clinical and non-clinical (psycho-social support), assertive outreach approach. This study measured improvements in resilience and wellbeing, changes to distress and suicidal ideation at least 6-months post-discharge from care. Thirty-one consumers participated including a one-on-one interview to gather qualitative feedback. There was a significant change on all outcome measures with large effect sizes. Participants had significantly reduced suicidal ideation and distress and increased coping self-efficacy, hope and well-being. The qualitative findings indicated that a key component to recovery was the staff. Limitations included a low sample size, and broad time range of follow-up data collection. Providing assertive, multidisciplinary, collaborative and outreach-focused post-suicidal care can increase and sustain protective psychological factors and reduced suicidal ideation in most individuals. Outcomes from participating in a six-week small-group living skills program, periodically implemented over two years with twelve adult mental health consumers, are reported as a case study. Occupational therapy and recovery-oriented approaches underpinned the development and implementation of the program thus it was important that outcome measures aligned with these perspectives. Data were gathered pre and post program using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) and the Life Skills Profile-16 (LSP-16) in each iteration of the program. Two occupational therapy program facilitators were interviewed about their experience of running the program and using these measurement tools. COPM occupational performance (p = 0.001) and COPM satisfaction (p = 0.004) scores indicated significant change at post-program whereas the LSP-16 total and subscale scores did not (p = 0.132 for total scores). Facilitator insights into the experience of implementing the living skills program and the perceived alignment of the COPM and LSP-16 with recovery-oriented practice are reported. Psychoeducational groups have been used to address many health needs. Yet, there are few such options available for people who have attempted suicide. This study presents preliminary findings from an open trial of Eclipse, an 8-week closed, psychoeducational group for people who have attempted suicide. It examined the effectiveness of the Eclipse program in reducing suicidal ideation, depressive symptoms, perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness, and increasing resilience and help-seeking. Results showed statistically significant improvements in depressive symptoms, perceived burdensomeness, resilience and help-seeking from baseline (T1) to immediate post-test (T2), and in perceived burdensomeness from T1 to 1-month follow-up (T3). A pervasiveness analysis showed that over half of the participants reported improvements in key study outcomes, respectively, as a result of participating in the Eclipse group. Psychoeducational support groups could provide broad application for those who have previously attempted suicide in decreasing severity of suicidal thinking by reductions in depressive symptoms, burdensomeness, and thwarted belongingness. Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Teams (CRHTTs) provide 24-hour, seven day per week support for people in crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has placed significant demand on urgent care and increased the need for brief interventions in CRHTT settings with flexible methods of delivery. This evaluation aimed to examine client satisfaction with the 'Crisis Toolbox' (CTB), a brief, skills-based intervention delivered in one CRHTT during COVID-19. All participants who received the CTB completed a satisfaction questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were calculated to quantify acceptability and qualitative themes were generated using thematic analysis. Fifty-eight people participated, all of whom reported high levels of satisfaction with the CTB. Four qualitative themes also emerged relating to 'Active ingredients of the CTB', 'The therapeutic relationship', 'Service-user preferences' and 'Expectations and continuity of care'. Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) are increasingly being considered effective models of recovery focused care, however their effectiveness and factors that may affect it have not fully evaluated. Cross-sectional study in Ireland included 106 members from 8 CMHTs. We examined CMHT's effectiveness and the effects of authentic leadership, team cohesion, team members' experience and team tenure on effectiveness, by administering the Team Effectiveness Scale, Authentic Leadership Questionnaire, and Organizational Cohesion Scale. Data on demographics, discipline, years of experience, tenure in the same team, full or partial membership, and number of team members were collected. Results from multilevel regression analysis indicated significant association (p < 0.05) between effectiveness of CMHTs and factors including team cohesion, authentic leadership, size of the team and full membership. Therefore, to increase CMHTs effectiveness, interventions are needed to those areas: a switch to make leadership styles more authentic, to improve team cohesion, smaller team size and full membership. Understanding early childhood mental health service utilization in community-based clinical settings is important. Project Linking Actions for Unmet Needs in Children's Health (Project LAUNCH) provided mental health-related services for young children and families within pediatric medical homes. Using data from the Project LAUNCH evaluation (n = 106), we implemented negative binomial regression models to determine if baseline variables were associated with service utilization, defined as the number of encounters between the family and the team. Past-year homelessness emerged as a significant predictor of service utilization. Encounters for families with children who experienced homelessness within the last 12 months occurred at a rate 34.5% lower than those who had not experienced homelessness. Results highlight the importance of addressing homelessness as a barrier to mental health service utilization for families. Screening for recent housing insecurity and developing interventions that integrate housing support services into mental health programs may inform strategies to increase attendance for families with young children. Stigma interferes with life goals of people with mental illness. Direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA) may impact stigmatizing attitudes. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of psychiatric medication DTCA on the stigmatizing and affirming attitudes of the general population versus individuals self-identified with mental illness. Participants (n = 272) were randomly assigned to watch a DTCA about Cymbalta, an antidepressant, embedded in two other advertisements for non-pharmaceutical products. Participants completed measures of stigmatizing and affirming attitudes before and after viewing this DTCA. Results indicate that the Cymbalta DTCA worsened the attitudes of the general public. These participants were less likely to offer help, endorse recovery, and agree with self-determination attitudes towards people with mental illness following viewing the DTCA. The self-identified group reported less blame, less dangerousness, less social avoidance, more pity, and greater willingness to help after viewing the DTCA. Moreover, there was significant improvement in their endorsement of recovery. Results suggest that DTCAs about psychiatric medication may increase the public's stigma towards people with mental illness but reduce stigma among individuals who identify as having a mental illness. Feeling threatened by terrorism can be associated with mental health problems and behavioural changes. However, few studies look at the association in the long-term. Using a survey, the population in Brussels, Belgium was studied using a representative database delivered by the national post service. The Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4) assessed mental health, and self-made questions avoidance behaviour. 170 people answered: 60% women and 50% higher educated, 28.2% between 56 and 65 years and 62.4% had a partner. 43.5% felt threatened by the terrorist attacks and 45.9% experienced no mental health problems. Both terrorist threat (p < 0.001) and avoidance behaviour (p < 0.001) significantly predicted PHQ-4 scores, while controlling for gender, age, social support, education level, and traumatic events. There is a relation between terrorist threat and anxiety/depressive symptoms 2.5 years after the last study on terrorist threat in Brussels, but it has weakened. The objectives of the study were to examine provider-family communication about attention deficit disorder during pediatric asthma visits. Children with asthma, aged 8 through 16 and their parents were recruited at five pediatric practices. All medical visits were audio-taped. There were 296 asthmatic children enrolled into the study and 67 of them also had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD communication elements suggested by national guidelines were discussed infrequently. Providers were more likely to discuss, educate, and ask one or more questions about ADHD medications if the visit was non-asthma related. Providers included child input into the ADHD treatment regimen during 3 % of visits and they included parent input during 4.5 % of visits. Only one child and three parents asked questions about ADHD. Providers may neglect essential aspects of good ADHD management and communication in children who have ADHD plus another chronic condition such as asthma. Providers should set appropriate treatment expectations, establish target symptoms, and encourage children and parents to ask questions so mutual decision-making can occur. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study assessed differences between service users’, family carers’ and mental healthcare providers’ perceptions on service user and family carer involvement in mental healthcare. We conducted questionnaires in care networks for persons with serious and persistent mental illness, among 111 service users, 73 family carers and 216 mental healthcare providers. Many aspects of service user and family carer involvement are achieved to satisfactory levels while other aspects are scarcely realized. Service users and mental healthcare providers perceive family carer involvement as less important and realized than service user involvement. Family carers hold more favorable views on the importance and realization of involvement than do mental healthcare providers. The implementation of stakeholders’ involvement in healthcare is ongoing. Notwithstanding great efforts, service users’ and family carers’ involvement preferences are not yet fully considered. Disengagement from outpatient care following psychiatric hospitalization is common in high-utilizing psychiatric patients and contributes to intensive care utilization. To investigate variables related to treatment attrition, a range of demographic, diagnostic, cognitive, social, and behavioral variables were collected from 233 veterans receiving inpatient psychiatric services who were then monitored over the following 2 years. During the follow-up period, 88.0 % ( n = 202) of patients disengaged from post-inpatient care. Attrition was associated with male gender, younger age, increased expectations of stigma, less short-term participation in group therapy, and poorer medication adherence. Of those who left care, earlier attrition was predicted by fewer prior-year inpatient psychiatric days, fewer lifetime psychiatric hospitalizations, increased perceived treatment support from family, and less short-term attendance at psychiatrist appointments. Survival analyses were used to analyze the rate of attrition of the entire sample as well as the sample split by short-term group therapy attendance. Implications are discussed. To examine depression severity and associated risk factors 1 year later among survivors of the May 12, 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in China, a cross-sectional study was conducted. Subjects included 704 survivors, ages 18–64, 367 (52.1 %) of whom were from heavily damaged counties and the rest from moderately damaged ones. Subjects were interviewed for socio-demographic variables, exposure level, and administered standardized scales for depression, anxiety, resilience, and social support. 23.0 % ( N = 162) and 13.8 % ( N = 97) of all subjects had moderate and severe depression, respectively, with depression severity being higher in severely damaged counties compared to moderately damaged ones (18.2 vs 8.9 %). Multiple regression analysis indicated that depression severity varied with gender, age, education level, exposure level, income, housing status, and social support. The association between income level and symptoms of depression were partially mediated by social support (ratio of mediation effects: 41.9 and 22.3 % for heavily and moderately damaged counties, respectively). In our study we assessed the frequency of reported hopelessness and suicide attempts in the national representative survey Hungarostudy 2002. The randomly selected sample consisted of 14,000 individuals over the age of 18. We created a short version of the widely used Beck Hopelessness Scale for screening purposes in suicide prevention. The short version of the BHS consists of four items and has high internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.85). Moreover, we conducted an investigation into psychological, somatic, sociological and socio-economic as well as cultural variables that show a positive or negative correlation with hopelessness and important predictors of suicide. The following psychological variables showing a positive correlation with hopelessness were identified: dysfunctional attitudes, exhaustion, psychological distress, hostility, lack of life goals and inability to cope emotionally. Sense of coherence, social support, perceived self-efficiency, subjective well-being and problem-solving coping showed a negative correlation with hopelessness. Concerning the relationship between hopelessness and suicide attempts, we found that participants who attempted suicide in the last year scored higher (mean = 4.86) than participants who attempted suicide more than 3 years ago (mean = 3.57). This study adapted Andersen’s Health Belief Model to examine the predictors of mental health services utilization among Korean American (KA) immigrants. A cross-sectional survey was used to gather data on 363 KA immigrants 18 years and older residing in New York City. Predisposing factors included gender, age, marital status, education, length of stay in the US, and religion; the need factor was depression; and enabling factors included health insurance, English proficiency, income, and perceived need for help. Approximately 8.5 % of participants reported having utilized mental health services, while 23 % reported having depressive symptoms. Shorter duration of residence in the US, lower income, and the presence of perceived need for help were significantly related to use of mental health services. The perceived need for help mediated the relationship between depression and mental health service utilization. The objectives of this study were to identify the interaction between drug interaction risk, common mental disorders, use of psychiatric medication and quality of life in patients treated in primary health care settings in Brazil. In this quantitative research, 452 patients were interviewed in ten basic Brazilian health units. Sociodemographic and pharmacotherapeutic questionnaires, use of psychiatric medication, prevalence of common mental disorders, and quality of life were utilised. The structural equation model was used to evaluate the relationships among the variables. The prevalence of drug interaction risk was 66.59%. The variables associated with drug interaction risk were polypharmacy and income. The use of psychiatric medication was associated with diagnosis of common mental disorders, income and gender. Metabolic disturbances commonly occur with serious mental illness (SMI). Strategies for weight management include group education, peer support, and follow up. This study evaluated the effects of group peer support on body weight, Confidence and Conviction (C&C), diet quality and health-related quality of life in a mental health setting. Fourteen participants [aged 51.7 + /− 12.2 years; four male ten female] who were unable to achieve and maintain 5% weight loss were recruited from a metabolic clinic at a mental health care facility. Weight, C&C, Dietary Screener Questionnaire (DSQ), and 36-item Short Form Survey Instrument (SF-36) were collected at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months. SF-36 showed significant improvement in Vitality/Energy (−3.823, p = 0.003) and General Health Perception (−2.919, p = 0.014) at 3 months, significant decrease in Physical Functioning (-2.391, p = 0.048) and significant improvement in Pain (−2.885, p = 0.023) from baseline to 12 months. Mental healthcare costs are rising. Community-based interventions often are being implemented without sufficient evidence for the effectiveness in terms of care and cost. In this pilot study, we evaluated the cost-effectiveness of youth Flexible Assertive Community Treatment (F-ACT) compared to treatment as usual (TAU). In total 28 adolescents (12–18 years) participated in F-ACT (N = 13) and TAU (N = 15). The outcome measures were the percentage of adolescents with a significant improvement in quality of life and Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs). Costs were measured using a retrospective cost-questionnaire. Outcomes were assessed at the start and after three months of care. Compared to TAU, F-ACT resulted in a significantly higher quality of life as reported by adolescents. There was no significant difference in quality of life reported by the parents. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) demonstrated that youth F-ACT is more effective but with higher costs. We investigated the relationships among chronic violence exposure, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity, hopelessness, substance use, and perpetuation of violence to facilitate the development of trauma-related interventions for residents of Newark, NJ. A convenience sample of Newark residents (N = 153) was recruited from community centers during various events in 2016–2017. Anonymous, self-report survey measures included a PTSD screen (PCL-C), Beck's Hopelessness Scale, the CAGE questionnaire, and a CDC Health Behavior Scale. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlations, Chi square analyses, logistic, and linear regressions were used for analysis. Thirty percent (95% CI [22.7, 37.4]) of our sample screened positive for PTSD. Drug and alcohol use, fighting, and hopelessness were related to severity of PTSD symptoms (p < 0.05). Female gender, CAGE scores, and hopelessness predicted the severity of PTSD symptoms (R2 = 0.354, p < 0.05). This study aimed to characterize mental health service access in metropolitan Lima, Peru. Between May and December 2012, we interviewed 4,445 Peruvian adults, applying the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI); a modified version of the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS-S); and, a health services access questionnaire. In the prior year, 3.6% (95% CI 3.0–4.4) of respondents accessed mental health services. Care access was associated with female sex; being unemployed; and having a diagnosed psychiatric morbidity. Of those with psychiatric morbidity, 16.9% (95% CI 13.3–21.3) received clinical care. Care access was 25.8% (95% CI 19.9–32.8) for people with a depressive episode; 12.1% (95% CI 7.4–19.2) for any anxiety disorder; and, 5.9% (95% CI 1.7–18.6) for harmful alcohol consumption or dependence. Respondents with moderate to severe levels of disability were more likely to recognize the need for care, but this was not necessarily associated with higher care access. Violence against women is a priority public health issue globally and women with mental illness are at double disadvantage. While social norms and beliefs play a critical role in influencing violence among women, limited or no research is available from India. To explore nurses and nursing students' views on social norms and beliefs that support Violence against women with mental illness. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was carried out among randomly selected registered nurses and nursing students (N = 209) using self-reported questionnaires. Majority of the participants confronted norms (76.7%) and situations that justify (67.7%) abuse among women with mental illness. Nurses reported more negative attitudes than nursing students with regard to norms and beliefs (t = − 2.714, p < 0.007) and justifiability of abuse (t = − 3.089, p < 0.002). Nomophobia (no mobile phone phobia) can be defined as a situational phobia described by the fear of not having a smartphone available or being incapable of accessing the Internet. Based on these characteristics, the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q) was designed, showing a four-factor structure and good psychometric characteristics. The current study intended to adapt the NMP-Q to European Portuguese (NMP-Q-PT) and test its factor structure and psychometric properties. Five hundred participants from the general population (convenience sampling) filled in the NMP-Q-PT, the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV) and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales (DASS-21). Three models were tested through confirmatory factor analysis. One higher order factor (global nomophobia) with four lower order factors revealed a good fit to the data. The NMP-Q-PT presented excellent consistency, construct and discriminant validity, as well as good concurrent and divergent validities. This study explored the views of non-psychiatric medical specialists about people with schizophrenia and depression and examined whether specialists' approach to these clients, and their perception of dangerousness and social distance, differed by disorder. Non-psychiatric medical specialists working in community centers in Italy read either a schizophrenia or depression description and then completed a questionnaire on their views about people with that disorder. The schizophrenia-group (N = 114) was more sure than the depression-group (N = 97) that the patients should be approached differently in outpatient specialized clinics like those where the respondents worked; are incapable of caring for their own health; and are kept at distance by others. Perceived dangerousness did not significantly differ between the two groups. These findings highlight the potential effects of attitudes on medical practice and outline the need to educate non-psychiatric medical specialists on stigma as a strategy to reduce health discrepancies, particularly toward people diagnosed with schizophrenia. A rigorous survey development process was undertaken to design and test a novel, comprehensive patient experience measure that can be used across the full continuum of addiction and mental health programs. Service users were involved in all aspects of the measure's development, including the selection of items, pre-testing, naming of the scales, and interpretation of the results. Survey data was collected from 1222 patients in treatment in a variety of service settings across Alberta, Canada (89% outpatients; 60% female). An exploratory factor analysis identified five subscales—patient-centred care, treatment effectiveness, staff behaviour, availability and coordination of care, and communication. The subscales had high internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.77 to 0.85) and test–retest reliability ranged from 0.53 to 0.82 across the five scales. Scores on the new instrument were correlated with treatment outcomes. The current research intended to study the state of mental health among the community of transgender individuals in Pakistan. The level of psychological resilience and self-esteem was explored in addition to finding the differences regarding socio-demographic factors. A sample of 100 transgender individuals was selected through snowball sampling. Data was gathered through self-respondent questionnaire and interviews. Results showed that 29% of the sample have low level of psychological resilience while 74% presented low to moderate level of self-esteem. A significant positive correlation was found between psychological resilience and self-esteem (r =.65, p <.01). Pertaining to socio-demographic factors, education has a significant positive correlation with resilience (r =.32, p <.05) and self esteem (r =.38, p <.01). Moreover, transgender individuals residing with their gurus have a significantly higher level of resilience (p <.05) and self-esteem (p <.05) as compared to living alone or with friends. Posttraumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD) is one of the common mental health conditions among Afghan refugees resettled in developed countries. The current study explores how social support, coping and other factors correlate with PTSD in this population. A survey was conducted with 49 adult Afghan refugees (males 41%, female 59%) who completed Harvard Trauma Questionnaire during their visit to a Community Health Centre in Toronto. Bivariate analysis and structural-equation-modeling (SEM) were used to examine associations and pathways between PTSD and other variables. Mean PTSD score was 2.53 (SD 0.92) with 53% showing symptoms of PTSD which was significantly associated with age, unemployment, social support and self-rated health. SEM showed that higher social support scores were significantly associated with lower PTSD scores, and the effect of coping and English language were mediated through social support. The high prevalence of PTSD, its association with social support and self-rated health are important issues to be considered for refugee resettlement programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using theory of planned behaviour, this study seeks to examine the effect of health practitioner's interaction with pharmaceutical sales representatives on their prescription behaviour. Data was collected from 248 health practitioners working in the city of Attock and from five Tehsils of Attock District through questionnaires with a net response rate of 82%. The hypothesis was tested by PLS Path Modelling. The major findings of the study were that physicians' interactions with pharmaceutical sales representatives in terms of market knowledge, product knowledge, corporate reputation and tangible rewards affect the prescription behaviour of physicians directly as well as through the mediating effect of the attitudinal component. The findings of the study would be helpful for the pharmaceutical industry as well as for drug regulatory authorities and health policy makers towards unethical practices in the medical field. India is the home of more than 253 million adolescents, which account for almost 21% of the country's population. In the recent past, there has been a rise in the prevalence of mental illness and maladaptive behaviours among adolescents living in slum populations, which are increasing at an alarming rate in many developing countries, mainly due to rural–urban migration, are characterized by poverty, poor housing, overcrowding, poor environment, and high prevalence of communicable diseases. This neglected population has become a major reservoir for a broad spectrum of adverse health conditions. Studies on the mental health status among adolescents in India are relatively scarce. The main objective of the study was to estimate the prevalence of mental health disorder and its determinants among adolescents in slum settings in Lucknow, India; by using GHQ-12. The study used cross-sectional primary data which was collected in 2015–2016 from the adolescents living in various slums of Lucknow city. About 590 adolescents whose parents gave consent to participate were included in the study. Descriptive statistics, Chi square test and ordered logistic regression analysis (OLR) technique were used to assess the mental health. Reliability of GHQ-12 was assessed before performing the analysis which was found to be 0.79. Approximately, 33% of adolescents were found to suffer from severe level of mental disorder. The results of this study depicts that adolescents of age 12–15 years had more severe mental health problems compares to 16–19 years of adolescents. Females were more likely to suffer from severe mental health problems compared to moderate/normal mental health problems (OR 1.72; p < 0.001). Odds of severe mental health problems was significantly higher among Muslims (OR 1.66; p < 0.001) than Hindus. Thus, it was found that age, gender, education, caste, household economic status, media exposure and religion to be significantly associated with mental health problem. Government should provide a wide range of adolescent friendly health services (clinical, mental, nutritional, including counselling) in these slums for a better adolescent health outcome. There is an increased need for efficient, low-cost methods to collect information on a range of widely prevalent mental health outcomes in the general population that can be administered outside of clinical settings. We evaluate the validity of a single-item Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for assessing the presence and severity of depression and compare its performance with the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) depression scale using a large non-clinical sample (N = 1816) of college students from Switzerland. The VAS scale is strongly correlated with the PHQ-9 total score (0.61) and its 9 individual items (ranging from 0.19 to 0.67). ROC analysis shows that the VAS scale has high accuracy for detecting the presence and different levels (mild to severe) of depression corresponding to PHQ-9 cutoffs. The VAS depression scale represents a simple, easily implementable instrument that is suitable for mental health research in common settings and larger population-based studies. The aim of this study is to increase the understanding of Quality of Life (QoL) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and explore the personal features of living with the disease. Sixty-two RA patients (MAge = 56.7; SD = 11.2; female = 83.9%) were interviewed. Assessment included topics on medical condition, functional status (HAQ-DI), and on their perceived difficulties and worries in having RA. Patients' overall definition of QoL was also inquired. Most patients lived with RA for a long period of time (M = 16.5 years; SD = 11.6) and presented moderate HAQ-DI scores (M = 1.37; SD = 0.75). Main features of QoL in RA highlight the importance given to physical health, particularly to independence and autonomy. Psychological distress emerged also as an important feature of living with RA, constraining a good QoL. Disordered eating pathology (DEP) represents a range of behaviors and attitudes, from negative body image to full blown eating disorders, appearing mainly in adolescent females. DEP is related to a plethora of biological and psychological factors, including various coping strategies. Sense of coherence (SOC) is a coping mechanism defined as an external and internal ability to adapt to stress and has been found to be associated with better mental health outcomes. However, SOC has not been examined in relation to DEP. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the relationship between SOC, DEP and body image disturbances among adolescent girls. The sample consisted of 248 Israeli girls (12–18), who completed self-reported questionnaires. SOC was negatively associated with DEP and body dissatisfaction. The overall rate of those in the high risk group for EDs was found to be higher than previously seen among samples from a similar population (22.5% vs. 19.5%), and was found to have a significantly lower levels of SOC and more negative body image than those at lower risk. Greater SOC was found to be associated with lower levels of DEP. It is suggested that strengthening SOC be incorporated into eating disorder prevention and treatment. Objective: Planning to promote the health of mothers in postpartum is important in all countries. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of two counseling method on prevention of post-traumatic stress after childbirth. Methods: In this clinical trial, 193 of mothers who had experienced a traumatic birth were randomly assigned to three groups. Participants were assessed using IES_R questionnaire at 4–6 weeks and 3 months after delivery. Results: Debriefing and brief cognitive behavioral counseling (CBC) significantly improved the symptoms of postpartum traumatic stress disorder. After 3 months, CBC had a significant effect on the symptoms. Conclusion: Screening of traumatic childbirth, implementation of supportive care, and early counseling prior to the initiation of post-traumatic stress are recommended.
