The Association for Computing Machinery Executive Committee and Senior Headquarters Staff hosted an important planning meeting in Singapore on March 17, 1996. Discussion centered on issues related to computing in the Asia Pacific region, ways to facilitate the participation of people from the region in ACM, and possible new ACM programs for the region. Nine countries were represented: Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Several of the ACM leadership in Western Europe also participated. The feasibility of a number of activities for the Asia Pacific region will be investigated. ACM would collaborate with the national societies. The organizing and program committees would be composed mainly of individuals from the region, with some participation from the U.S. and Europe. Due to the large populations of India and China and the growing interest in IT, there is significant potential for ACM in India and China. Natural "champions" to lead those efforts already exist in ACM Chapters in India and Hong Kong.
