The emulsion polymerization process allows production of polymer particles with different structural morphologies. Films obtained after coalescence keep some memory of this morphology, but large modifications can occur during coalescence. In the present case, one of the polymers, polystyrene (PS), exhibits a glass temperature ( Tg) much higher than the filmification temperature (close to room temperature), while the other one, poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA), has a much lower Tg. Furthermore, it is well known that dynamic mechanical measurements can be very helpful in providing information on the morphology of polymer materials, i.e., on geometrical and topological arrangement of homopolymer domains. At first, this method was used for comparison of two types of films: i) the first one obtained from structured-core (PS)-shell (PBA) particles, ii) the second one obtained from a blend of homopolymer particles (PS and PBA). It appears that the expected core-shell particles lost their geometric structure in the second film. Second, comparison of the predicted dynamic modulus and experimental data shows that i) strong interactions exist between PS nodules unless their coalescence has occured, leading to an abnormally high modulus at room temperature, ii) after achieving their coalescence, PS forms a more or less continuous phase. The measurement of the complex dielectric constant ( ε=ε′−jε″) in the dipolar absorption domain of the 'free' water molecule (microwave region) permits us to follow quasi-specifically and precisely the water circulation during the coalescence process of a latex. Weight losses and dielectric constants variations have been simultaneously recorded upon latex drying, in a resonant cavity at 5 and 9 GHz and under controlled atmosphere and temperature. Two different latexes were studied (polybutylacrylate (PBuA) and polystyrene (PS)) from which the glass transition temperature effect was investigated. It is found that the harder the polymer particles, the more clearly evidenced the flocculation and packing points are. The dielectric behavior ( ε′, ε″) of three well-cleaned monodisperse polystyrene latexes having the same particle size and the same number of chemically-bound surface groups has been studied at a fixed microwave frequency (9.4 GHz), as a function of temperature and surface group (SO, COO, OH). A large dielectric relaxation was observed in the sulfate-stabilized latex, which has the most polar surface end-group. The anomalous behavior in the thermal dependence of the hydroxyl and carboxyl-stabilized latexes (the OH latex being more pronounced than the COO latex) may originate from differences in the experimental conditions used for the preparation of such polymer colloids, or due to the presence of ionic species. On the basis of various dielectric models, the apparent volume fractions of the latexes were calculated. The amount of 'bound' water around the latex particle was quantitatively correlated to the polarity of surface end-group (SO > COO > OH). The differences between the calculated and actual values were not only a reflection of the thickness of vicinal water, but could also be indicative of the presence of oligomeric species in the suspension's medium (serum) of the latex. Polystyrene latexes with a narrow size distribution ( Dw/Dn < 1.05) were prepared with a large range of particle sizes (from 40 to 800 nm) in the presence of various amphoteric sulfobetaine surfactants. The influence of the nature of the surfactant and of the ionic strength, the pH and solid content were studied. The results are discussed and compared with those obtained using sodium dodecyl sulfate or in the absence of surfactants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface characterization was investigated in vinyl acetate (VAc) butyl acrylate (BuA) copolymer latexes of various compositions and prepared with four different emulsion polymerization processes: conventionnal batch, composition-controlled batch, core-shell, emulsifier-free semi-continuous. Surface end-groups (sulfate or carboxylic) titration results were first compared and discussed according to the type of process and as a function of conversion. As previously shown [1], it was confirmed that batch latex particles present a heterogeneous structure with a rich VAc outlayer, as in core-shell particles. As expected, semi-continuous and composition-controlled batch particles exhibit surface end-group characteristics revealing a more homogeneous distribution of both monomers within the particles. These differences in particle morphology were corroborated by analyzing water-polymer interface in these latexes using the soap titration method, with the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) or sodium hexadecyl sulfate (SHS) as emulsifier probes. When the BuA was batch-polymerized onto PVAc seed particles, the estimated surface composition seemed to show that probably phase rearrangement occurs in the particle during the synthesis or upon aging.
