- Abstract
In this study, tapes of seven matched sets of counseling and supervision sessions were analyzed, rated, and compared to test for the presence of parallel processes related to empowerment and conflict. Four specific empowerment behaviors observed in counselor-trainees during counseling and in their supervisors during supervision were tracked and tested for correlations. Ratings of counselor-trainee and supervisor supportiveness, directiveness, activity level, and ratings of the overall quality of sessions were also tested for correlations. While the results of the pilot study did not indicate the presence of a parallel process of empowerment, several unexpected negative correlations from the data support the idea that supervisors may work harder and attempt to be more supportive with relatively weaker counselor-trainees.
